This review contains some small spoilers.
“Captivated” is the second book in “The Verge” series starring book one’s kidnapped twin, renowned linguist Dr. Theophrastus Campbell. Already having established the beautifully rich and rugged world of the Verge, the Core, and deep space, Thomas builds upon her first book with the tale of Theo, his kidnapping, and the adventure and romance that ensues with his captor. Thomas’s strength of character development comes through greatly in this second book of the series.
The reader’s journey starts on Britannia when Theo’s office is visited at an unusually late hour to admit a mysterious man, Captain Jun Park. Park needs help from Theo with translating a language very few others have been able to master in order to save an untold number of people from certain destruction. The mystery of Theo’s kidnapping is solved from the first book in this novel, and the mystery now becomes what, exactly, Captain Park needs from our bubbly Theo.
Character-wise, Thomas delivers over and over with a cast of interesting, hilarious people with depths we discover over the course of the book. I fell in love with each and every single one of them. First, we have Dr. Theophrastus Campbell, our protagonist. Theo is an irritatingly endearing combination of childish exuberance, semi-sheltered innocence, and unhinged flirtation. A poster child for ADHD between his inability to stay still or keep quiet, Theo makes for an interesting and compelling lead. Then, there is surly, emotionally repressed Captain Park and his Core-born eloquence matched with the Outlier rebelliousness and extremism. Finally, we have Park’s crew of Boom, the security and weapons specialist, Axel, the ship’s pilot, and Marco, the ship’s engineer. I have to admit, Park’s crew were probably my favorite part of the whole book — between their constant ribbing of Park’s fondness of Theo and their, in turns, sweet and suspicious treatment of unmarked, innocent, Doll-like Theo, I fell in love with each of them. Sweet, quiet, understatedly intelligent Marco is probably my favorite of the three. Whereas Thomas’s lead, Theo, is academically brilliant, she crafts these character’s skills and intelligences in a way that emphasizes their importance. I absolutely adore the way Theo regards their abilities and, whether he says it to their faces or not, Theo admires each of their capabilities.
Plot wise, I did find myself wishing there were more hints of what, exactly, was going on throughout, as I didn’t really get what the mission was until around chapter 20, but perhaps that was my own inability to connect the dots! Plus, Thomas’s focus on the characters’ developing relationship with each other became more important to me, kept me thoroughly entertained, and the aforementioned relationship developed in a way that didn’t feel forced or unnatural in any way. Contrasting the heightened sexual tension between Jun and Theo is their inability to talk about their feelings which was frustratingly entertaining in the best way; you cheer for them to just kiss already and when they finally do, it’s so rewarding.
I would obviously read the first book, “Restricted,” before reading this, but this sequel is a great take on the other side of the Campbell twins’ coin. Containing action, adventure, romance, suspense, and mystery, “Captivated” is aptly name for it certainly captured my heart, and I cannot wait to read the next installment to see what else happens with these amazing characters I’ve fallen in love with.
