In her varied career, Heather has written short stories, novels, comedy acts, television treatments, ad copy, commercials, and had two one-act plays well-received in Manhattan. Once she even ghostwrote a book on how to run an employment agency. She was unemployed at the time. Heather’s first paying job was writing a love story for Moments of Love, published by Bantam Books. But it was her stint at New York City’s No Soap Radio - where she wrote comedic ad copy – that helped develop her long-time love affair with comedy. She is the acclaimed author of the award winning humorous California PI mystery series, The Alvarez Family Murder Mysteries, which includes Murder is a Family Business, A Wedding to Die For, and Death Runs in the Family, available at Amazon.com and selected bookstores. Her recent endeavor is the Persephone Cole Vintage Mystery Series, taking place in New York City, circa 1940. Ever wonder how Sam Spade or Phillip Marlow might act if they were a woman? Meet Persephone ‘Percy’ Cole. The first of the series includes The Dagger Before Me and the second, Iced Diamonds. A stand-alone mystery noir, Death of a Clown, made its debut March 1st, published by The Wives of Bath Press.
All the characters in the Alvarez series are interesting and well rounded. Even the cats are interesting! The clues keep you guessing. Loyalty to family and friends is an over-riding value in all the books. No swearing or seamy sex. Is Gurn too good to be true? Does Lee have any friends who don’t get in trouble? BTW, the books seem well researched.
Lots of books in one set. Each better than the last!
Seven books in set, all mysteries with a touch of clean love. Each a separate case and lots of intrigue, never a dull moment with the owners of DI. A business that has lots of people to investigate Silicon Valley crimes but frequently crimes involving friends. ENJOY them all!
Not a cozy mystery as I initially thought but still good reading.
Ever notice that cozy mystery characters do not age? At the start of the series, Lee was 34. More than two years passed and she was still 34. Backstories also change slightly. It is problem when reading the books one after the next. Inconsistencies become glaring.
Despite the above, would love to revisit this world.
I really liked all the stories and hated when I'd finished them all. The stories were fun and I really liked the writing style. Will definitely read more from Heather Haven.
Each novel had an interesting plot. There were enough twists to keep the reader wondering. I loved the family involvement. Really enjoyable but light enough to read and enjoy but not be disturbing.
I truly enjoyed each book in this series. The characters are well developed and never dull. I love the interplay of relationships between family and friends. Please keep the series going. I will be watching for a new installment.
A wonderful collection of cozy mysteries featuring Lee and her Mother. Lee tries hard to solve mysteries and find out who committed the crimes and why. Humour as well to make this a book not to be missed.
Light, funny, stupid, too repetitive, semi-weak main character. Too much emphasis on “proper” with no spoken annoyance from Lee. Just once, tell her mother to keep her ways to herself, that some people like their nickname, and it’s okay to dress down sometimes. Haven doesn’t need to bring in torn jeans and tats to work, but as a client, I’d be wary of people who were always stuffy and wore MB to catch the bad guys. Lee should be inserting herself into her mother’s way of life as Richard has. Show her real self around Mom.
Like most books, it had its own little bit of 'here we go again'. As serious as a murder mystery should be, but bunches of humor throughout I'm glad I have this Box Set. Can't wait to download the next set.
An amazing set of characters, including cats who solve very intricately plotted murder mysteries. Your emotions will run the gamut. And as for humor, you'll laugh out loud. A super enjoyable series.
This series just gets better and better. It's more than just a mystery, it draws you in and makes you feel like you are among the characters. I can't wait to start the next one.
I read the 7 book boxed set and loved each one. I just kept on reading with anticipation to learn more about this close knit family. The adventures were well written, held together by love. I want to read more by this talented author.
Although each book stands alone at 3 stars the Alvarez family collection deserves 4. Together you grow to appreciate the family and the complexity of the mysteries they solve!
