Battle It Out

Rate this book
Master Sergeant Zane Gannon loves nothing more than being a part of his Special Forces unit and kicking ass, but above everything, he values his friendship with Isaac. Sure, they argue and snipe at each other, but it’s all in good fun. Until it isn’t. Now, Isaac is pulling away and something Zane has buried for two decades is resurfacing.

Staff Sergeant Isaac Thorne has loved Zane Gannon from a distance for three years, and he was doing just fine concealing this fact until the colonel decided to pair them together a year ago. Now, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to hide his feelings, so he takes to avoiding Zane. So what? The man is infuriating and straight, and lately, he’s acting very strange.

The fire ignites between Zane and Isaac when things come to a boiling point on a mission and the locker room gets heated. Infinity takes on several new recruits. BFFs are not who they seem, and a mission goes horribly wrong when a group of homegrown terrorists rear their ugly heads.

Hold onto your helmets for a bumpy ride as these two soldiers battle it out.

I debated a long time before deciding on the rating. This is Zane and Issac's story.... the story that it seems I have waited forever to read. I have had an on again off again going with this series since book 1, but I do really like Reece Knightly and several of the books in the series have really hit the mark with me...this one? Yes and no. There are way too many individual storylines going on that we don't have a real clear feeling of what is going on. Anyone that started the series with this book would probably give it up. I expected a big blow up and didn't have long to wait...both guys are dynamite fuses looking for a place to go off. One of the biggest problems I have with not only these two guys, but many of the characters in other M/M romances, as well as F/M romance books...they either don't talk to one another, or they spent 3/4 of the book being either angry or reiterating why they shouldn't be together. Come on...the book is only so long. Get it together guys. You're acting like a couple of love-sick teenagers. Overall...Reece Knightly is a fantastic author and the characters in this series will grab and hold your heart. I just wish they wouldn't take so long to grab each other's hearts.

I can't tell you how disappointed I am. I feel like I've been waiting forever for Zane and Isaac's book. Maybe that's the problem - my expectations were too high. There's just too much drama, too many characters old and new. Zane and Isaac continuously acting unprofessional and immature. Isaac spent far too long blaming Zane for everything, excepting no responsibility for himself. Honestly, the book is a mess and I feel like I'm reading about completely different characters to the ones I've been reading about in previous books in the series. Zane and Isaac deserved better than this.

Low Tolerance for People who won't talk to each other

This could've been wayyyy better had the characters just spoken to each other and not acted out on assumptions. Unwillingness to communicate is one of my pet peeves in romance and this hit me even harder because I was not in the mood to overlook it.

Coupled with the whole sabotage plot that was frankly not needed, the only reason I kept reading was to see how the villains would be apprehended.

Hopefully the next goes better!

Another great read

3.5*

Another one which had a strong narrative and not quite as much eye rolling as some of the other entries in this universe.

I liked both Zane and Isaac but I really felt for Zane once it came out what had happened to a friend of his when he was younger.

Together they had a lot of work to get things back to normal and I appreciated that this wasn't an easy ride.

Battle It Out
By Reese Knightley

This is the only book I've read in this series and I get the feeling they need to be read in order. There are things alluded to that happened in the book before this one and I feel if I'd read it I would've had a much better understanding of Zane and Isaac's relationship.

This book jumps right into the middle of their currently fractured friendship. Yet at the same time they take a long time to work through it all. It's a slow burn romance and I'm not really fond of those.

The background story of chasing the terrorists was great, but it was wrapped up to easily. That was a let down.

I loved the HEA and seeing a certain lady get her date with karma.

The book is in both Zane and Isaac's POV.

Normally I really love the Code of Honor books but this one really left me with mixed feelings. This book has too many story line and doesn't do them justice.
Issac and Zane were a long time coming and the blow up was to be anticipated. Zane struggles with his feelings and Issac tries to rein his ones in while being confused and hurt by Zane's actions. So far so good but a) I found they are too professional to have arguments during a mission and b) for Issac being hurt he goes from "I don't want to have anything to do with you" to full blown make out and sex in a matter of hours - hm, it just doesn't fit for me.
Issac's family issues are there but again - it feels he goes from Nil to 100 in half a chapter while still trying to figure out what is up with Zane, it just isn't belivable for me.
There are also too many names thrown around, I do read the books shortly after they come out and had real trouble trying to figure out who is who. Maybe a bit less people would have made the book easier to read.
The mission itself was playing set-back here, it just feels the author tried too much in one book.

Battle It Out puts the spotlight on Zane and Isaac. It's always been obvious that these two had a special bond but things between changed through time, reaching to a sizzling tension and a delicious friction every time they were around each other. And while Isaac had no doubt what his feelings for his best friend were, Zane had still to take a good look inside himself and open his eyes to what he really wanted his relationship with Isaac to be. I had so much fun with them, especially at the beginning, when Zane was green with jealousy, his emotions clear to everyone but himself. He did sometimes irritate me, mostly when he ran hot and cold with Isaac, and it became a waiting game to see when Zane finally worked through his insecurities and doubts.

What I enjoyed was the fact that, while Zane and Isaac figured out their feelings, the story was packed full of action scenes and also moments when the military men got together for some downtime. Like always with this author's stories, it's never only about the protagonists. It's about their important, dangerous work, about the friendship they've built and the group dynamics. I loved being with all the guys again and witnessing the romance between Zane and Isaac develop. No matter who'll be next to be bitten by the love bug, I can't wait to read their story.

Find your path

If locker rooms could talk, the one on base would be the most popular for sure. I love all the men in Infinity and Fury and it makes my heart pitter-patter when they all get together. Woo, finally Zane and Isaac get to duke it out for love and this book is aptly titled. There’s so much tension and steam between these two, I’m surprised my kindle didn’t start smoking. What got me though are the beautiful moments when stubborn squared Isaac and Zane finally opened up to each other and let go. “I’ve been ready for you my whole life. It just took me a while to figure it out.” Pow, right in the heart. Of course, there’s tons of action, danger and suspense but mostly I love visiting with all these amazing men and best of all, there’s some exciting surprises in store that made me jump for joy.

Have been waiting for their story

Been waiting for Isaac and Zane's story. As always the right amount if action, heat and loving. This is one of my favorite series. Hoping the next one is out soon. Could it be Greene and Forest? I hope so.

Isaac and Zane are best friends, and they are partners at work. They work for a secret elite special forces unit called Infinity. They also have secrets.

Isaac’s secret is that he is in love with his straight best friend (Zane). He was coping with it until the two of them were holed up in a safe house for a few months. That happened before the events of this book, but they talk about it. It was a mostly blissful few months and the two bonded and had the best time, until it got kind of weird at the end. Things are now pretty strained between the two.

Zane’s secret is that he is actually bi, and is developing feelings for Isaac. Zane has known that he was bi all his life but initially hid it for reasons explained in the book, and then the longer he went without saying anything the harder it became to tell anyone. So now he is in his 30s and still in the closet. I do think it’s a little odd that he wasn’t comfortable telling people because pretty much all the guys in Infinity are gay, as are pretty much all the guys that Infinity works with. And they are also good friends, so when Zane is at work and when he is at social events he’s the only straight guy. And his brother is gay. But I have never been a man who is secretly bisexual so I can’t judge.

This series is generally pretty fun, as is the Out for Justice series (the two cross over a lot). This one was a little less fun, because Zane and Isaac were insufferable for the first half of the book. They didn’t communicate well. One would think that something was wrong with the other but instead of asking, they would just make some sort of an (incorrect) assumption, then their feelings would get hurt at the imaginary problem and so they would pout and get snippy, which would cause the other guy to think something is wrong and the cycle would start all over. It wasn’t until about halfway through that they got past that.

I am not in the military, but even I can recognize when books are unrealistic. And unrealistic is ok, because this is fiction and people like to read as an escape from the real world. But this book took it too far. Infinity is terrible. If I were in a terrorist situation I would prefer that you sent in the volunteer fire brigade, or anyone else. Just not Infinity. None of the people on the team seemed to be particularly perceptive. Zane and Isaac were distracted on all of their missions either arguing about their problems or thinking about their problems. And the higher ups were very lenient and seemed to be trying to do some low-key underhanded match making. Zane and Isaac were so unfocused that they were a threat to their team. They should have been dismissed. And a couple of new guys were selected to be part of Infinity but the selection process didn’t seem thorough enough for an elite special forces unit. One guy had PTSD and was filthy and was on a two week bender after losing much of his team in a roadside bomb, but they saw potential and made him an immediate member of the team. Yes he was a hero, but was he in a place physically or mentally where he could handle the work? When he reported to work he still had bloodshot eyes.

The blurb says that it can be read as a stand-alone, but I don’t think that it can. Events from other books in the series were referenced. And there are SO MANY characters, including characters from previous books in this series, as well as the Code of Honor series. And there wasn’t a lot of exposition on who they were, so if you hadn’t read the other books you wouldn’t know. There were also new characters introduced, and some of them were very clearly being set up for future books. I found the book was hard to follow at times because there were too many people, and I lost track of who was doing what and who was talking. It also detracted from the main story. It took the focus off of Isaac and Zane. There needed to be less people.

I usually love the best friends who are pining for each other trope, but the main characters acted like angsty teenagers. It was especially disappointing because you knew that something was up between these two in all of the previous books, and the payoff wasn’t really there. I had been so excited to finally read Isaac and Zane’s story, so I wish it has been a little more. Maybe the build-up was part of the problem.

I am, however, pretty excited about one of the future pairings that was hinted at in the epilogue.
I would recommend the other books in this series, as well as the Code of Honor series. And if this is the first one you read and it wasn’t your cup of tea, don’t give up on the author.

I loved the passion and deep feelings between these two men as they worked through difficult truths together. Lots of emotions and feelings in this story. This was an MM story with mature content.

3.5 Slight spoilers

Battle It Out is book six in the Code of Honor series by Reese Knightley. It centers around the relationship between Isaac and Zane. They have been partners in the military for years until Isaac gets stabbed and things get weird. They both have feelings for one another but the past and their fears put them on edge. They push each other away causing a whole other set of problems within the team.
The story is as well written as always, the main characters easy to relate to. The action and romance were again on par.
However there werea couple of things that just didn't click well for me in this one. First of all we don't see a final outcome with Isaac's mother. I would have liked to see a bit more there than just the one scene and a quick rap up after the emphasis that is put on it.
The second was the side plot concerning Lacy. The whole thing seemed a little last minute and forced to me, like maybe the word count wasn't there and this was added to puff it up some. It just didn't seem to fit right to me.
Overall it was still a good read and d would recommend it along with the rest of the series.

Battle It Out (Code Of Honor Book 6) is the 6th standalone in the Code Of Honor Series by Reese Knightly. This is Zane and Issac's story. We get a bit of their story in the book prior to this, Whatever it takes, where it was alluded that Issac took a few weeks or months off from Infinity, the elite military force that this series is based around.

I highly recommend that you read every single book in this series in order. It's so pertinent to understanding the overall hierarchy and characters in the series. Don't get me wrong, if I read about a soon to be couple in one book, I will definitely skip ahead. It's just that by doing so, you will have so many spoilers about the books you haven't read yet but that were a part of the series.
so apparently from what we found out from book 5, Issac went away for a while, he and Zane are work partners, and Zane isn't gay. I wouldn't even call that a spoiler so don't worry.

Zane is Dillon from book 5's younger brother. You'll learn about their traumatic childhood experiences. I won't spoil that for you. Still, it's shaped him into the man he is today.

That being said I did find this book a bit boring where long parts dragged taking away from the overall enjoyment.

I found Issac SO annoying and immature at times.

Battle It Out finally puts Zane and Isaac in the spotlight, and it’s every bit as fiery and tension-filled as fans have been hoping for. Their bond has always been special, but over time it’s shifted into something more—a simmering attraction and friction that’s impossible to ignore. Isaac has always known his feelings for his best friend, but Zane has to confront his own emotions and insecurities before he can see what’s right in front of him. Watching Zane wrestle with jealousy (obvious to everyone but himself) was both entertaining and, at times, frustrating, especially during his hot-and-cold moments with Isaac.

What really made the story shine was how the romance unfolded alongside the action-packed military plot. The book delivers intense missions, dangerous encounters, and the camaraderie that’s become a hallmark of the Code of Honor series. I loved seeing the wider team dynamic in play, with downtime scenes adding warmth and humor to balance the high-stakes action.

Zane and Isaac’s romance is a satisfying slow burn that blends heated tension, emotional growth, and plenty of heart—making this a strong and memorable installment in the series.

Story: Disappointing....bad communication! I have to say exactly the same feedback other reader provided: " I've been waiting forever for Zane and Isaac's book. Zane and Isaac deserved better than this" These are supposed to be grownup people, that act like teens. Then is repetitive over and over. The previous books at least were entertaining, but this one was awful. Hope you enjoy more than I did, Happy Readings!!!

Zane and Issac are partners but lately things have been tense. As part of the elite group,  Infinity, they need to work like a well oiled machine but that has not been the case. Tempers between these two have been at an all time high and something has to give. Zane has suppressed feelings he should have dealt with and it has created issues which have been noticed by team members and Colonel Cobalt.  Nothing should ever get in the way of a mission but feelings surface and Zane finds himself on a mandatory  leave and out of Infinity. Can these two resolve their issues?  This is another awesome book in the Code of Honor Series

No audiobook this time, but we finally see Zane's repressed sexual tension for Isaac come to the forefront and after plenty of misunderstandings and actually physical fighting (loved the locker room scene when they knocked over the lockers) the boys finally settled down when Zane pulled up his big-boy panties and confessed his feelings to Isaac.

Lots of testosterone in this one and the "romance" took up more than half of the story but the subplot of the hunt for a terrorist through the Louisiana swamps was a fun adventure (for me, not the characters) and I enjoyed the underlying action.

Onward to my next already purchased audio in this series.

Way to many moving pieces

I Absolutely Love Reese's books. I mean shoot, you find everything in them - Hot Sex Scenes; Action; Drama; Hot Sex Scenes, well you get my point - but just a few pages in and I ended up having to go back a reread books 3 & 4, so I had some context for 5. Then, I still end up rereading this one twice, just before I could figure out if I had caught everything going on.

It is still a good book, just lots and lots of Action! Oh Hot Sex Scenes too!! Reese Always gets 5-stars for those alone.

I do hope her next book is with Holden and Beckett

That was great but you better read previous books because you get lost very easily with all the names and families. Honestly, between team members, family members, nicknames, it gets confusing if read as a standalone.
The backstory wasn't compelling to me, I was only there for the romance. Speaking of the latter, I expected more of it, more developed but no, you get MCs not speaking or hostile towards each others to jumping one another without a conversation. I wasn't a fan of how it was developed.

FINALLY! Zane got his shit together and stopped with the "I'm Straight" protest. We all know he had it for Isaac from the start. I actually liked that they had a tiff out on the job. It was more realistic that way, unable to keep the hurt and anger from boiling over in a high stress situation. Made them feel more real. Not so hard and robotic. Isaac got to show his badassery on this one. We also got to know more of their backstories and why they act as they do. I'm so glad i have the day off, I'm ripping through this series instead of reading books for the scavenger hunt lol.

8 books in this Epic Series - and more in several spin-off series. They are all interconnected by the MC's who work together but could probably be read as stand-alone, you would just miss a lot of the nuances of the secondary characters, who have had their own story or will have their own story. All the MC's keep popping up in each other's stories and I love them all!

I read the Out for Justice series and next is the Cobalt series, then Operation Justice Force. So many books, so many great MC's and so many enthralling stories.

Don't think I want to continue with this series any further. I've already skipped one book due to lack of interest in the main characters. Why can't we get a book about Blade or Pia? They sound way more interesting than the random cardboard cutout soldiers we're barely introduced to before a whole book is dedicated to them!
The Phoenix series was so great, how was this series so disappointing and amateurishly written? It's like whole scenes were edited down until they no longer made sense in several of the books.
Please, Ms. Knightley, fire your editing team!

Best Friends?

Infinity's Master Sergeant Zane Gannon, and Sergeant Isaac Thorne always have each others back in combat but in matters of the heart not so much. Isaac wants Zane with a passion but Zane is straight or is he. When their feelings get in the way of a mission it forces them to actually talk to each other. But with meddling friends can they ever find a way forward, that doesn't break their friendship or the Unit.

Another excellent Free Kindle Unlimited book in the Code of Honor series.

Friends to lovers, with angst

This is a military friends to lovers trope with bi awakening, miscommunication, and unrequited feelings. It’s also a good cautionary tale for why partners should not work together!

Isaac has the unrequited feelings and Zane has the bi awakening but because he is unable to communicate he does nothing but tick Isaac off which in turn ticks Zane off which results in issues on a mission. Separation seems to make things worse. Add in betrayal, peril, and it takes the help of others on the team to bring about this ultimate HEA.

Fight on!

I just wish I could give you more stars because our soldiers deserve it! Oh my goodness we had some funny moments when Zane was trying to figure himself out and Isaac was absolutely no help! Then there was plenty of drama so no worries about lack of action and drama and then love moved in and everything was perfect. This is a great addition to our Code of Honor books and it also catches us up on our other men!

We meet Isaac and Zane in other books and this one is a continuation of their story. While you don't have to read those books to get the whole story, it does help.

I have liked this series, but this book and the one previous have not been my favorite and I can't really put my finger on why. I think the back and forth between Zane and Isaac was a bit much and took way to long to resolve before they just had a HEA.

It was good and I'll continue with the series, but....

I have been looking forward to this book since they weee first mentioned in Reese’s books. You could just feel sexual tension between the two but neither of them could just talk about their feels. I love a slow burn, pining romance, it keeps me picking back up the book and staying up way to late because I can’t put it down. I loved this book, it lived up to my expectations and is my favorite so far of the books I’ve read of hers. I’m excited to see what our new recruits have in store!
