A powerful military force under the command of a renegade Nigerian General seizes power in West Africa.
But this brutal conquest is only a stepping-stone. Unchecked, the human cost of his bloody ambition will be catastrophic.
With her ship, the stealth destroyer U.S.S. Cunningham, out of action, Commander Amanda Garrett is given command of the military mission to stop the ruthless General in his tracks.
But the Sea Fighter Task Force - an untested flotilla of British, French and US forces - is outnumbered, outgunned and operating in the enemy's backyard.
And only bold action by Garrett and her makeshift force can prevent a tragedy of epic proportions ...
This is the 3rd book of the 4 book Cunningham series. It was just as good - if not better - than the first two! Given that the technology it writes about is now 15-20 years old, it still seems realistic and relevant. The sea action is so well written. The plot is good. I am going to see whether Cobb has written anything recently. I would rate this as high as the James Rosone novels which for me is high praise indeed!
James' best thus far. He totally captured the scene and scent and feel of Africa. The balance between power, opportunity, greed, leadership and democracy were all portrayed in glorious technicolour with very real and dynamic characters playing all the parts. His attention to technical and military details without losing the reality of life in the tropics is masterful. I was hooked by the third chapter and read to the end with (almost) a single breath. Loved it
Sea Fighter is the third book in the series and this is much better than the second book of the series. Each book in the series so far can be read independently, however, having read the previous books will help.
In this story, Amanda found herself in the middle of a UN mission in Africa. Instead of her usual stealth destroyer, she is now heading the Task Force consisting of a bunch of Sea Fighters. She is also heading the entire US Navy deployment in this UN mission.
While her job was to observe and impose UN sanctions, she found an effective way to ensure the end to the war by staying within UN imposed limits.
I have read each book in this series of 4 & absolutely LOVED each one. As a matter of fact It's 3:00 a.m. & I'm going to start on book 4 in a few minutes. Give this or any of the books in the series a chance and I dare say you too will be hooked ! Great character development, the techno details are reflecting what is out there and not borne solely from a creative author. Well, book 4 beckons..........
Another great page-turner from James Cobb. If I see any negative it's that Amanda seemed to me to show less of her feminine side than in previous episodes, seeming more like Captain Kirk, or any other male lead character. On the plus side, she is an awesome lead. I also learned a bit about Africa.
Once again, a "can't-put-it-down" book from Mr. Cobb. An "A" for his storytelling and ability to hold our attention through all the action! But only a "D" to his editors/proofreaders as they gave up about half way thru this book! Typos in this quality book are like flies in a bowl of soup! Yuk.
A naval action that I have never heard of or could never have thought of. Not one battle, but many and the excitement rattled around my brain. I felt it in my bones. Great writing. An emotional journey I haven't experienced very often. A wonderful read the made me forget my morning coffee.A
Wow! Mr. Cobb did it again. This was an involved story that kept me turning pages. It seemed like it was a little longer than the previous books in the series, but I was a bit sad when it was over. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. Kudos to Mr. Cobb!
This is the third book by Mr. Cobb that I have read and I must admit that they simply get better with each writing. I now follow him and very much look forward to reading his next novel.
Book 3 continued to carry on the edge of the seat adventure of Boojs 1 and 2. The author is adept at developing Amanda's character and leaving the reader looking for more.
Book 3 continues the saga at the same breakneck speed of it's predecessors with a great story line, interesting character's and more than a few twists and turns to keep the reader interested. 5 star's!
Really enjoy this series. Pure escapist reads. Full of great characters, and action. Also some profound thoughts. I also enjoy that the protagonist is a strong and resourceful female.
James Cobb combined military strategy and human interactions to make a gripping page turner. He knew how to tell a story. Even though the scenarios are dated, the story is strongly told. These stories are a fitting legacy to a skillful writer.
I have read all of James Cobb books in this series. They are all good. This one was different and a bit unusual and somewhat refresh. It was also very detailed. Ok for those who like the nitty gritty, bad for those who like a quick read.
Too long and drawn out. To the point it got boring. I hope the next book in the series is more condense. I’m going to skid the next book in the series and read one of my shorter (400) page authors. This one was over 700 pages.
James Cobb continues the Cunningham series with another great read. Lots of plot changes, lots of military information, very good descriptions of military life, action, loss and victory. Good book if you want a war thriller.
Captivating read! The weaving of what is reality for people in the forces and a story of the good guys is very compelling. I have learnt a slew of new words to use in scrabble too.
As this story of Amanda continues, it is still full of US Naval actions, Navy Personell, and equipment. These are well researched characteristics and flavors of people we are following in this Book Series.
Third completed in the series, devouring each installment, great blend of action, technology and drama in another very realistic setting, topical and relevant.
OutStanding, action filled book, with well drawn, believable characters. Best book so far of an excellent series. Amanda Garrett is a great protagonist.
