Ganz besonderes Buch!

Ok, so I’m definitely dating myself here, but does anyone remember the movie Career Opportunities from the late 80s? In the film, a nerdish guy and a beautiful girl get locked in a Target overnight where they form an unexpected bond. (It also happens to be the first time I ever heard of a Target, but I digress). Even though I don’t remember the details of the story really well, for some reason it’s still the first thing that came to mind when I read Maybe We’re Electric.

Tegan Everly is known around town for all the wrong reasons. Born with a deformity, brooding Tegan has always felt like she’s on the outside looking in. She spends a lot of her time working at the Thomas Edison museum in town. She doesn’t completely love the gig (or Thomas Edison for that matter), but she sticks with it as it’s one of the few remaining places that makes her feel close to her dad who died suddenly.

One emotionally charged night the popular Mac Durant comes into the museum where Tegan is hiding out. Bloody and mysteriously asking for help, Tegan goes along with it, but is confused when Mac decides to stick around. After all, besides being classmates, Tegan and Mac have nothing in common. However, after a few deep conversations resulting in some unexpected parallels, Tegan starts to wonder if she pegged Mac all wrong. But Tegan has a secret. Can she share the truth with the true Mac or is their newfound connection destined to be just a flash in the pan?

This was a quick read that still managed to be chock full of insightful angsty moments. Initially your heart goes out to Tegan, but the reader is quickly reminded that everyone is facing their own battles, despite how things might look from
the outside. Another thing I enjoyed about this book is that it wasn’t about the happy ever after. That made the story feel more real and relatable.

While perhaps not as prolific as his previous work, Maybe We’re Electric is still a understated young adult book that should resonate with readers.

***Thanks to NetGalley for providing me a complimentary copy of MAYBE WE’RE ELECTRIC by Val Emmich in exchange for my honest review.***

Two very different high school students, both running from family issues, spend the night in a Thomas Edison museum. Teagan was born with a deformed hand, what her parents affectionately call a limb difference. Though not a major factor in the story, it is part of who she is and how she views herself. Popular, athletic Mac seems to have a perfect life, especially to Teagan.

On a night where neither wants to go how, the two connect over their emotional trauma, until some truths threaten to sever that connection.

I would have been all over MAYBE WE’RE ELECTRIC between the ages of 11-15. Though the characters are sixteen, the storyline and writing will connect probably better to tweens and younger teens. I’ve have read and reread the story and if it became a movie, watched and rewatched. Girls in this age group will find something identify with in either or both Teagan and Mac.

I’m not sure MAYBE WE’RE ELECTRIC will appeal as much to adults who enjoy YA, which doesn’t matter as we aren’t the target audience. I don’t think I’d revisit the story of look to see a movie as I would other YA/MG books.

Younger teens will enjoy MAYBE WE’RE ELECTRIC, be sure libraries are stocked with multiple copies.

This is one of those novels that jumps around the timeline. Current events are in first person, past events in second. At least that was what I thought. And then I noticed some of the past events were also first person. I am a little embarrassed that it took me so long to figure out what was going on: the MC is a bit of a sociopath. And all those times it was in second person is literally like her negative headspace has taken over narration as an entirely separate consciousness to her usual self. ANY WHY ARE PEOPLE NOT TALKING ABOUT THIS? It was freaking genius. I mean, yes, the MC is entirely unlikeable and has some terrible coping mechanisms, but she’s written so well. To garner any emotion from a reader takes talent, and I liked the writing style in here. The reveals came in little snippets, and when you actually analyse all of them you can see just how truly messed up her headspace was. Literally everything is a cry for help, and in the end she helps herself. Surface value this doesn’t stand out, but it’s clever and one that will linger with me as my brain reinterprets everything after *finally* triggering what the change in narrative style meant. It blew my mind a little bit right there.

I was like 50% and already not giving a shit but then it decided to throw a dumbass dead relative plotline at me that I absolutely am not gonna read further. Mention that in the summary instead of calling it a SeCrEt. Choke.

I have completely mixed feelings about this book. This review has possible spoilers? I guess it depends on how you look at it so I did add the spoiler warning just in case :)

The first half was completely terrible. The main character, Tegan, was absolutely insufferable. She bit someone who she barely knew?? Very very strange. She also had a severe victim complex, and it was so annoying to have to listen to her whine about problems that she herself created!!

However, the second half was so much better. Tegan had immense character development, and realized that she isn’t the victim in all of the situations she’s had to face. She completely morphed into a good person, and it was so inspiring to see how she could move past even the worst of mistakes. Also, the author perfectly captivates the feeling of being your own worst enemy and struggling with admitting your faults.

I think the first half being bad possibly makes the book better. That might not make sense, but it’s because the reader gets to see Tegan truly grow as a person. I absolutely hated her throughout the first half of the book, but then she grew into a better person and learned from her mistakes. While I had to push myself through the awkwardness of the first half, the second half made it all worth it in a way.

While I didn’t love this book, I can’t say I really hated it either.

I don’t know why I expected better writing after having read the Dear Evan Hansen novel. But here we are on a slippery slope to progressively worse. It took all my willpower not to DNF this book.

On the snowy night Tegan lets herself into the Edison museum to escape her home situation, she doesn't expect Mac Durant to also show up. Mac's the popular golden boy type, and Tegan hasn't felt "normal" since she realized how her physical differences set her apart. But Mac doesn't act like Tegan is different, and soon she's invested in what's happening in his home life and sharing some of her own story... only she knows she's partly responsible for what's happening with Mac's father.

I just love a story where a few hours and a random connection creates a life-shifting change. While Tegan and Mac are trapped by the snow in the museum, they have nothing to do but share and connect. Each of them are revealed, layer by layer, down to how Tegan lost her father and how Mac's ashamed of his, and how it's destroyed each of their lives. When I found out Tegan's secret I just wanted her to tell Mac immediately... how it played out was far more realistic. Of course I just wanted that rom-com ending! But it was still a good ending, nonetheless.

⚡️ Honestly a little iffy on the main character Tegan. Her victim complex bothered me, especially when she told Mac his trauma wasn’t as important. Trauma is trauma, no matter how deep.

⚡️This book gave me Gossip Girl vibes and as much as I lived all the drama and tea spilled, it sucked that Dan was the one behind it (I always disliked him).

⚡️ I felt as though it was a competition for Tegan. Mac would say something, she would say something in her life that was worse. Then you get a toss of her family dying (also feel as though the author tossed that in to “beat” Mac)

⚡️However, she did earn character development in the second half.

⚡️ Who bites someone they just meet?

Surprisingly thoughtful and engaging, without being all earnest or ridiculously angsty. The theme is that everyone is people, everyone faces different challenges... even YA characters! Yes, that's what almost all YA claims to say... but in my experience it's not usually handled so gracefully.

Far from a perfect book, and one thing in the 'epilogue' section really peeves me, and there's definitely some teen romance and stuff going on... but still, I enjoyed, and I think teens will, and if you have to read a YA for a challenge or something you could do worse than choose this.

Thanks to the publisher for providing an eARC of Maybe We're Electric in exchange for an honest review.

I think I would have loved this in my earlier teen years. I think a lot of people would have. The characters have big "All The Bright Places" energy (though I wouldn't say the plots are comparable, they're just very faux deep 'not like the other teens') which I used to love reading but I think since I've read it so many times I'm fine-tuned to see where the characterization hurts storytelling.

This is unique and I genuinely loved the narration and the 24 hour book length makes it easy to get wrapped up in this, but it's also a really character heavy book where the characters felt a bit hollow so do with that what you will.

Thank you hachette audio for the complementary audiobook.

I have mixed feelings on this novel.
I absolutely loved the style of writing, it was so beautiful at times. Another thing I really enjoyed was that the story took place in 24 hours. I found that to be really unique and it made it easier to read.

While I loved the story, I did not love one of our MCs Tegan. I understand what the author was trying to do, I just couldn’t get past it honestly.

This is YA and I think teens will definitely love this. It was a short read and I liked it for the most part.

The audiobook itself was great, the narrators did amazing!

I always feel bad when I don't like a book, but I definitely did not enjoy this one. Part of me wants to say that it's just because I've aged out of some ya fiction, but as I thought about it more, there isn't a middle or high school aged person that I would recommend this to. I like what it's trying to do with disabilities and the strained relationships teens have with their parents, but I wish it would have been executed differently. This book is proof that I've moved past being able to take the all star guy falling for the sad girl in a corner trope.

Wanted to like it, it had the elements of being engaging… both the main characters had depth and layers and further information was pleasingly revealed as the book went on but it just felt flat and kind of limped along, despite being quite short and not a big read it was a read and discard kind of text …
Skippable but ok.

I really liked the idea around the book and wanted to love it so bad but it just didn't click with me. I tried reading it but I just couldn't connect to the characters well. It didn't flow smoothly as I would have liked it to be but I really liked the mood that was set.

Um, very interesting. It's a bit of a weird storyline overall and has very negative elements and characters. Nothing really happens to sum it all up between Tegan and Mac at the end of the book and it feels like the book just ends.

Overall, not bad, but hard to read at times.

this review will be pretty spoilery and consist of me just exploring the nuance behind my own reaction to this book. to sum it up before spoilers, this was one of the cases where the ending of the book definitely helped brighten my overall impression of it, but even before that, I enjoyed the conflict and was pretty invested in the development of the mc and her big problem. that being said, i definitely wouldn't read this for the romance, but more for the plot (i went in thinking this was a romance. lol). overall wasn't anything particularly bad, but it wasn't super good either? just a very mediocre read to pass time, but i did enjoy it overall.

ok so yeah first thing to say
the mc was like pretty dislikable. i kept swinging between fully disliking her and being completely unable to see where she was coming from to having like a smidge of empathy and seeing her as more morally grey, in a way. it was so frustrating the consistency and frequency at which she lied to mac. like. she was literally a pathological liar. even w the whole (spoiler) nightshade stuff, i just couldn't understand the logic behind it, or even try nd see where she was coming from. she just felt like such a horrible person to me. (At least she was self aware though, lol)

on the other hand, upon finding out about the emails, that's where the empathy appeared. the emails showed that there was some guilt in there and that she did know what she was doing was wrong and feel bad about t. but then this progressed into like complete victimization. she played the victim sm w neel (i love neel btw) but like when called him and just demanded like 'how do i fix myself' like how are u just gonna make ur character development someone else's responsibility. such a bad friend tbh.

even the fight w her mom felt so shallow. or when she was like 'my dad is DEAD at least ur dad is alive' like bro he's still in a pretty situation tf. i just never really thought she was in the right with her actions (prior to her character development), and that's why i was glad when neel finally just humbled her and told her to stop playing victim.

another thing is that i initially went in for the romance, which felt pretty shallow. i liked mac but the development seemed entirely platonic, until it just wasn't? it felt forced but not forced just like... unnatural i guess. tbh i didn't even want them to end up together, like mac deserved better lowkey

i think the reason i kept going was just to see how the big reveal would be, and how the book would end, and I'm glad i stuck it through. i was pretty satisfied w tegan's character development (just realized that's the first time i used her name in this review lmfao) and the way she revitalized her relationships.

side note, the inclusion of edison's history and the little connections to mac & tegan was cute.

anyway i don't think i have much else to say. even though i didn't outright love this book, i don't feel disappointed having read it or like i wasted my time on it. pretty mid book 3/5

I enjoyed learning about Thomas Edison! That was the best part of the book.
What we have here is teenage angst and bad decisions, mostly from the female protagonist.
The characters didn't seem believable. Would Mac spend all night out knowing there is a potential crisis going on at home? Scary, and I really hope not!
Would Tegan leave her family to worry about her all night... and for what trivial nonsense again?
Would her mom really forget that Tegan is a vegetarian? That seems doubtful.
Would she come home in the morning without an explanation of where she's been and have no one care enough to ask? Apparently!
I guess the reason I didn't like it more is it just didn't seem believable that teenagers would be so clueless. I want to give them more credit than that.
This wasn't as enjoyable as Dear Evan Hansen.
Two stars cuz it was just okay. I don't think they'll be making a musical based on it.

I have been waiting for this title for a while now and couldn’t wait to read it. I was nervous it wouldn’t meet my expectations, but I am so happy to say I was wrong. It was wonderful and I’m glad I had the chance to read this book. It’s the classic nerd girl and popular boy formula but with a few changes. She has a disability and he’s the nice guy everyone likes with more issues under the surface. Yes, this has been done over and over but the author has a way of making the characters feel fresh and reveals both characters flaws as time goes on. Although the majority of the book takes place over one night we watch as two people connect and realize that they have quite a bit in common. The relationship felt realistic and natural. Both characters grow in a believable way and made the story satisfying. I found myself not wanting the story to end. I would recommend this book to everyone as it was a great read. Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for the ARC! 4.5 stars.

Peeeero no.
