About the author

Phil Ball born 1957 in Vancouver, Canada is a British writer based in Spain. He has lived in Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain, for over twenty years. Born in Canada to English parents, Phil Ball grew up in Grimsby on the north east coast of England, having moved there as a child in 1957. As a youngster Phil Ball supported Grimsby Town, saying "I was brought up on lower league football". After finishing University, Ball took up an English teaching post in a state comprehensive school in Hull. He subsequently taught in Peru and later Oman, eventually moving to San Sebastián after the first Gulf War.

One of the most unbiased and concise summation of the history of one of the world's most famous football club. His description of the club's most important moments were brilliant. Despite being a book about Madrid he still managed to explain the influence of politics on the sport in Spain. Overall, I found it to be a good read and I recommend it to persons interested in Spanish football and Real Madrid.

This unbiased account is a necessary read for us Madridistas even though this was published in 2003 and updated in 2007 (so much has happened since then. So much.). The neutral account ensures that we don’t (forgive the pun) whitewash some of the more problematic or gray moments in our history, even though they do tend to be overblown to suit rivals’ narratives.

Great stuff about a great club. Would love to give it a 5-star rating but it doesn’t measure up to my faves from Amy Lawrence, Michael Cox, or Raph Honigstein.

Phil Ball szczegółowo opisuje kolejne lata Realu Madryt, od założenia klubu w 1902 roku, aż po epokę Don Carletto i drogę po La Decimę. Jest to naprawdę rzetelny zapis historii, niesplamiony w dodatku subiektywizmem i pochopną oceną. Ball jako Brytyjczyk jest sprawiedliwym i neutralnym obserwatorem hiszpańskiej piłki, a jego bezstronność jest największą zaletą książki. Pomysł sam w sobie wydaje się niezwykle trudny, ale dopiero po przeczytaniu „Królewskiej historii” dostrzec można jak tytaniczną pracę wykonał autor. Z uwagi na to, że Los Blancos mają w swojej historii blaski i cienie, można być spokojnym – nie jest to kolejna laurka pochwalna na cześć tego zespołu, a i nuda raczej tu nie grozi. Nieodłącznym elementem burzliwej historii klubu jest oczywiście kwestia polityczna. I tutaj autor bardzo dobrze się spisuje – kreśli przed czytelnikiem zarys sytuacji politycznej w kraju, szczególnie dyktaturę generała Franco, co pozwala lepiej zrozumieć zarówno miłość jak i nienawiść do tego klubu wśród Hiszpanów. Mimo że cała konwencja tej książki przywodzi mi na myśl podręcznik do historii, czytało mi się ją bardzo dobrze, bo Ball mimo wszystko pisze z polotem, czasem nawet wtrącając dowcipne uwagi i potrafi zainteresować czytelnika, a przy tym ma doskonały zmysł narratorski. Sama już nie wiem czy to z miłości do historii czy do Realu Madryt czy też dzięki pisarskiej wprawie Brytyjczyka, ale z ogromnym zaciekawieniem czytałam kolejne strony, a pojawiające się co jakiś czas archiwalne fotografie dodawały tej lekturze niepowtarzalnego klimatu. Na widok zdjęcia pierwszego prezydenta z 1902 roku, starego Charmatin czy - trzymającego Puchar Europy – Alfredo Di Stefano serce każdego madridisty zabije szybciej.

Nie wiem na ile interesujące mogą być zawarte tu informacje dla zwykłego czytelnika, ale dla kogoś, kto okres od września do maja spędza głównie na śledzeniu wyników Primera Division, będzie to naprawdę fascynująca lektura. Warto jednak zaznaczyć, że jest to książka dedykowana prawdziwym pasjonatom piłki nożnej, a szczególnie La Liga. Autor dosyć szczegółowo opisuje początki nie tylko Realu Madryt, ale również innych piłkarskich potęg na hiszpańskiej ziemi, takich jak Barcelona, Atlético Madryt czy Athletic Bilbao. Dla kibica będzie to prawdziwa literacka uczta, dla ciekawskiego czytelnika – być może nuda.

Bogata w historyczne detale książka, a przy tym ładnie wydana – w twardej oprawie, opatrzona fotografiami z różnych okresów istnienia klubu, będzie prawdziwym skarbem każdego madridisty. Nie wiem na ile potrzebny jest to gadżet, ale skoro potrafimy wydać kilkaset złotych na klubową koszulkę, to z pewnością nie powinniśmy żałować czterdziestu na kawałek solidnie przedstawionej historii całego madridismo.

Phil did some great research for this book and I loved the section on Hugol and the Quinta del Buitre. It's a bit soft on soccer during the Civil War and also includes a few anecdotes that are more blind alley than insightful. Still, he brings to life some of the best RM moments during Di Stefano's time. A very good read and I rec it for RM fans.
