A zombie on the run. The curse has been hijacked. Time for patient zero to step up.

The human race has become an endangered species in the two weeks since the bomb fell in Seattle. Luckily for Digby, that’s not his problem. Skyline believes that he and his coven were burnt to cinders, so all he needs to do is lay low. Well, that was what he hoped would happen.

Instead, Henwick’s plan to hijack the curse was successful, spreading a new kind of monster across the land. They’re faster, stronger, and more lethal than the dead that came before. With these creatures on the prowl, it doesn’t take long before the apocalypse once again comes knocking at Digby’s door.

His plan to laze around is foiled, so Digby grudgingly sets out in search of a new home. With new allies and adversaries to keep an eye on, his coven will have to uncover the secrets behind Henwick’s plans.

Is creating a safe haven enough, or will Digby be forced to go to war?

Astoundingly fun

Not deep, not meaningful, only competently written, but deeply, bone-shakingly fun throughout.
There are, surprisingly enough, some fairly good character arcs present, but that's just gravy.

I rated the first book much higher than this and thought after reading it that this book had the potential to be 5-star material. The only thing holding the first book back from 5-stars was a lack of character work. This is something that most series rectify almost by default as the longer you spend with a character, the more you learn about them and the more they have to develop for the story to unfold. Somehow this wasn’t the case here.

The biggest culprit of this is Digby himself. I don’t understand the point of making this character an 800-year-old zombie. He doesn’t act like he’s 800 years old, he doesn’t talk like he’s 800 years old, and but for a few quirks of the plot that could have been written out another way, there is no benefit to him being 800 years old. This character has no depth, and the hook that could have been interesting (a character out of his time struggling to find his place in the world) is so underdeveloped it’s nonexistent. Therefore, what we are left with is an unlikeable arsehole who walks, talks and makes quips like a 21st century moody teenager.

Maybe the deepest character here is Rebecca because at least the author tries to touch on her troubling back story. However, even here this book falls short. This is a woman who has lived a sizeable chunk, if not most of her life, locked away from other people and only interacting with the world through her drone. This is the sort of character I would expect would shy away from talking to other people and would be dangerously agoraphobic. She wouldn’t just want to stay in the van on adventures, she would want to hole up somewhere and hide, never moving from that spot for any reason at all. I imagine panic attacks would be a big part of her life, along with an inability to talk to people face to face, to look them in the eye, to read social cues, etc. However, what we get is an overconfident woman who is comfortable with confrontation, with being snarky all the time in other people’s presence, and who talks about the stuff that happens in her past like it matters but the story never shows that it does in any meaningful way.

The reason I’m getting so hung up on the characters here is because characters carry us through a story. Your plot has to be truly amazing to overlook bland characters, and this one isn’t that amazing. It’s got an interesting premise, but that’s not enough to carry my interest for more than one book.

Why the feck 13th-century villager talks like organic avocado toast munching, double pumpkin frappuccino sipping, vintage flip flops with socks made from bamboo wearing, woke Seattle resident? Is that is because he watched some old zombie movies?
This is the least believable thing in the book about the magical zombie apocalypse. Really takes you away from the story.
The story itself is still OK, but the plot hasn't progressed that much.

I blazed through this volume in one sitting.

Consistently delivers. An achievement in this highly volatile subgenre.

My interest remains piqued, my gripes remain unchanged.
And by the way, Dig doesn't sound british at all, Mr Narrator 😜

But I'm already looking for volume three.

Alert

“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. I am simply saying that I liked it. I would like you to read it and make your own decision. After all, you are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.

Cheers

Impressive. Comedy game-lit with a plot
I can't tell if I like book two better, or if I like the whole series better after reading book two.
I like where this is all going. the plot and character development are out stripping the clever but jokey beginning.
I found book one to be very snappy but the main character was annoying. In book two he is less so and getting better.
I immediately started looking for book three. Imagine my shock and horror to learn I got this far the month book 2 was published. What a long wait ahead.

The book was awesome a solid 5 stars. Well deserved 5 star rating as it has great world building incredibke character growth and many fun surprises. I love how much we get too see from not just Graves, but the others as well. Some places in the story I felt my self wanting to facepalm because of Dig he is just so funny without trying to be. There is a lot that happens in this book and many new characters are introduced. Anyone that enjoyed the first book is in for an enjoyable continueation in this 1.

Lord Dig Graves strikes again

Another fun read, though the grammar grated me a bit at first but definitely got better in the second half. "Lord" Dig Graves absolutely earns his name this go-round. This OLD dog is learning some new tricks this trek around the globe, and finally finds out that even zombies need people, in more ways than one. With new friends, new enemies, and even new items on the menu, Digby and Co. find themselves a new adventure, a clear goal, and things that would love nothing more than to rip them in half.

This book was a great continuation of the story. Despite Digby wanting nothing more than to just relax, kick back, and live out the apocalypse, Skyline just will not leave him and his friends alone. Not only that, but the number of humans he has to keep alive just keeps growing. What is a zombie to do?

If you liked the first book, you'll want to read this one too. So, what are you waiting for? Grab a copy and keep up with everyone's favorite undead anti-hero who is absolutely not going to save the world...

Book two

Mistakes: I only found one mistake in this book.

Plot: I didn't enjoy this book as much as book one. I think mostly because they seemed to react to situations instead of being the ones forcing the reactions. I hope book three shows them doing better instead of just reacting to what others do.

Characters: I like the MC and his crew. I do wish that they would do something to grow their forces.

Round Two and still swinging

New allies. New threats. New spells. New plan.

Digby Graves is still in way over his head but that makes for a wild ride for the rest of us. This book has action, humor, and enough crunch to keep us all going.

A worthy second book that continues to build upon the first.

Very fun story

I like the crossover to litrpg, zombie apocalypse, and pseudo faction war that makes it all fun. There’s a lot of themes that somehow mesh perfectly in this book.

It’s focused on our undead hero - who talks and uses his necromantic powers for his own gains… and those of his friends.

This was "okay".

I don't have much to say about it. There were a few things I didn't like, but I don't have the energy to expand on them.

One thing that stuck out is that single protagonists are the best. You only have yourself to blame if something goes wrong. Someone breaking your camouflage and screaming at your enemy can't occur when you are by yourself.

Still loving this series. Author focuses more on character growth for Digby in this series. Which ends up being kind of a mixed bag for me. While I like seeing him change to become a better person over time, I didn’t enjoy the method used. Digby’s sidekicks end up criticizing him a ton especially one in particular and it is done in a very self righteous way. Kind of rubbed me wrong.

fun

I really enjoy reading about Digby’s adventures. He survived the last book, but now the zombie apocalypse has vampires. He struggles for power while who jousting with another zombie. The big bads find his new hidey hole and so Digby goes to war.
A great series. Highly entertaining. Few edits needed. Please enjoy!

Dig is a really funny character. I just love how he is learning what movies say about Zombies, and how they are so wrong according to him. I would love to see what he would say about those Disney singing zombies, he might just die again. I also like how he out thinks the bad guys by playing a fool, but he is smarter than that.

Another great book to follow the first one.

This book like the first one is really well written, it has maybe more of a struggle for the Mc as they have to react to situations happening around them, but still an amazing book.

Excellent!

Even better than the previous one! I'm so into that story, I wish it will never end! If you're here, you read the previous one, so nothing to explain: you know you need to read that one!

Loved it! I certainly enjoy the more building between allies. No one can do this on their own and it also develops some of their character as well. Why Becky is Becky. Meeting new people outside of the city now that we know how and or why this all really started.

I am really loving this series! When is a hero a zombie? Never! I really enjoyed the teams progress at leveling up their magic. We can all love the snarkiness of Digby throughout the book. We can see that we are heading to large scale war in the future. I will need to read the next book ASAP.
