Lorenzo places his hands on either side of my face, lowering his head to stare directly into my eyes. His voice is barely above a whisper as he says, "you are my dream now."
The
3.5 stars. You may raise an eyebrow at the pink and hearts graphic. What else was I going to use for a book titled My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century?
I will say that this was the perfect read to follow up the last extremely dark, heavy, and graphic story that I read. Yes, this is definitely on the younger side of YA than what I'd normally prefer to read, but I am willing to forgive a small amount of fluff if the story does eventually develop into something interesting, which is what happened in this case.
With this title it's sort of a given that there is going to be a something of a fluffy element to the story. If anyone's ever seen one of those Super Sweet Sixteen shows, you'll get what I mean. The silliness and pop culture references weren't really my thing but I do admit to smiling at : Lady Gaga interrupts my reverie and I motorboat my lips.
However, I was cheering for a heroine who didn't want to be a fluffy doormat. Cat's world was a world of excess, but she didn't want to be known as a shallow, one-note person. She was smart, strong, and a great role model for younger girls.
I'll start off with a couple of minor complaints before getting into why this book was a great find.
Cat's acceptance of her time travel situation came with almost no panic or worry for what might happen to her. I find it hard to believe that anyone who's sent back in time without warning would not have at least a few moments of wanting to hyperventilate out of fear that they might not make it back. Or, at the very least, the person might take more than the time frame of a commercial break to accept that they were HURLED THROUGH TIME.
I wasn't necessarily bothered that Cat didn't always take to speaking old fashioned but I was surprised that she didn't try to reel in some of her slang phrases instead of purposefully using them to mess with her hosts. Her poor host family...what would they have been thinking? This girl was one big walking mistake at times.
Faux pas number 1008 : I'm guessing ladies didn't shake hands with gentlemen back in the day.
Where the book really grabbed me was during the second half.
The first half was cute, young, silly, and fluffy. I'd consider it a 2.5 to 3 star read - overall pretty forgettable.
The second half, however, turned into a massive YES for me and is the main reason why I have a higher rating now. The story transitioned from silly to tense in a heartbeat. I went from rolling my eyes to being nervous over the fate of the characters. Once the tale really settled down into sixteenth century Florence, the story started to gain more weight to it. One of the most fun things about reading time travel books is getting to see the characters' reactions to things such as the style of dress, the bathroom facilities (garderobe in this case), or even the way people eat. I had to go look for a picture of a medieval style fork after Cat described that it was strange to eat with a fork not having a curve to it.
Then the last few chapters and epilogue happened and I had one of those, "WAIT...NOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN?!?" reactions.
Oh my goodness...Lorenzo. Was he not too cute or what? I can't say anything else because of spoilers but he was so flipping adorable in the second half of the book. I want to know more about both Lorenzo (and a character who comes later named Lucas) now.
My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century was worth the read just for the fun second half of the book and all of the anticipation that I'm now going to have for book 2. I should be pissy over that major cliffhanger but instead I'm just going to use it to channel excitement over what happens next. I have a theory about Lorenzo that I want to share with anyone who has read the book.

After a killer ending that produces vast amounts of anticipation for the sequel, I have decided I did not, in fact, hate this book for being over, and finally admitted to myself that I actually secretly love cliffhangers that succeed in making me wildly excited for the sequel. Because boy will it be an entertaining one I am sure! I definitely closed this with much more than I was hoping to get from it. Not being a history buff whatsoever--I shy away from anything historical and so I was on the fence about this one. Then I began to see an influx of positive review after positive review, and, well, you know about "curiosity kills the cat"? I am that cat! And if I do die, at least it won't be from terrible-ism (if I say it's a word, it's a word!).
The main reason that I highly enjoyed this regardless of its historical setting is because of the main character's modernistic charm; moreover, Cat is not from that era! She is from our day, with our iPods and iPhones. You can only imagine the lifestyle change she has to go through when she is suddenly thrown into the 16th century! When I wasn't chuckling at her faux-pas, I was swooning over the wonderful romance that I've come to expect--and relish--from Entangled titles. So if, like me, you're crippled by the idea of reading a historical, this one deserves an exception! And for the history buff, don't be disappointed either, as there are culture and art references to placate you. With that said, it's a perfectly well balanced novel that brings the charm and heart of the 16th century, while keeping a modern style writing and witty, contemporary characters.
So unlike our 21st century for obvious reasons--some more than others--the 16th century is quite intriguing. The lack of technology and wardrobe differences aside, guys were a lot more chivalrous in those days. My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century brings us a romance that is magnificently sweet, endlessly romantic, and your heart will break from the start knowing it can't last forever. He is, literally, centuries older than her after all. However, it doesn't stop this from being a maddening, chemistry filled love story.
With even more odds stacked against my personal taste, this novel, aside from a historical-ish, brings time travel into play. As a reader who is hard to please with plots of time travel, I felt this one was handled in a more fantastical, aloof way which may not work very often, but it does in this case. You aren't meant to think of the complexities behind it; this is a magical adventure, and you roll with it. On a related side note, the explanation we get from the gypsy regarding her motivation is a little weak, I think I would have preferred if it was simple coincidence, but maybe there is more to it that we have yet to discover.
From romance to humor, My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century combines the 21st and 16th century into an exotic read that will not only please fans of historicals, but also those who have an unnatural urge to stab them. However, fair warning that the ending will show you just how funny Rachel thinks she is!! *glares at the fact that there are no more pages*

Hands down, one of the most imaginative books I've read. Harris has the ability to whisk you away not only to another place, but to another time. Her characters are flesh and blood, and the romance is so hot it crackles. I can't wait until every one learns what I have about MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEENTH CENTURY, which is that it's brilliant. Bravo, Harris! I'm standing on a chair clapping my ass off.

Cats life is anything but ordinary. Her father is a Hollywood film director. He is dating someone new and Cats potential stepmother is a little over the top. Her birthday is approaching and the family are wanting to do something special. Unfortunately, they didn't take into account what Cat would like. Cat finds herself in the need of a little me time before her birthday gala begins. They have taken a trip to Italy so she has the perfect tranquil setting. After wondering around she comes across a gypsy tent. The temptation to look inside is too much and so the adventure begins.
Cat is transported back in time to the sixteenth century. Artists are in their prime and the rules of society have changed. Cat is transformed into a family member from the past. Luckily she is found by friends and family. She now has to navigate a different kind of party.
My super sweet sixteenth century is a fun read with a cute message. There is some romance and some interesting characters. Cat is a sweet kind girl who learns the lesson taught. This is book one in a series of 3. The door is left open to continue the story in book 2. Book one ends as expected rather than a shock factor cliffhanger. I enjoyed this book. It was fun and interesting. The idea behind the story is creative. 4 stars out of 5.

Rachel Harris is one of the most talented authors I’ve had the privilege of reading. A master of descriptive writing, Rachel paints rich, vibrant scenes and characters that jump off the page as she crafts a fresh, detailed world full of adventure and romance in her debut YA. Cat, girl, she knows how to get herself into some messes, but I love her reactions and logic as she navigates the world and time she finds herself in. There’re some truly hilarious scenes, scenes that made me melt, and others that broke my heart.
Lorenzo…with a swoon-worthy name like that, you know you better guard your heart, and Cat tries her damndest to do just that. But as this suave and sexy ladies’ man from the past works his way into her thoughts, she finds herself falling for him, and falling hard. I love Lor! He’s one of my top book boys, and I admit, I selfishly want him all for myself. With action, gypsy magic, amazing description of a world long past and heart-melting romance, My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century is beautiful and enchanting, and a must read for lovers of Magical Realism.

My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century Review on K-Books

Wow... when thinking about this book words completely fail me. I honestly do not know what to say. When I first heard about this book I instantly wanted to read it. I mean come on... read that blurb who wouldn't want to read that? It sounds incredible... but I was still a little hesitant. I am generally not a historical fan. The historical books I have read I have really not liked but I couldn't help but want to read this book. I am a huge fan of the Renaissance period so was really looking forward to it despite my dislike for historical books. Technically this is a historical book. It's setting is in history BUT I freaking loved it. I am now dubbing this book the historical book for people who don't like historical.
Cat Crawford does not want a major sweet sixteenth. When Cat's family take a vacation to Florence, Italy all she wants is to escape on her own. She loves art and just wants to be alone to see the wonders found in Florence. When she comes across a Gypsy tent... something Cat has never believed in she finds herself going in... and walks out in the 1500 Renaissance period. How can she get back to her time... and does she want to when she meets the fun-loving and devilishly handsome Lorenzo?
This book was just brilliant. I totally loved it. I loved the setting of Florence with the beautiful cobbled streets and I just fell in love with the Renaissance period. I was kind of surprised by how much I loved it. I am not a historical fan as I find historical book kind of boring, but I love steampunk books so to hear about this I just had to give it a try. As soon as I received this for review I immediately dived in... and was totally blown away! It's just fantastic. Just imagine a normal 21st Century girl traveling back to 1500s. It made me wanna go find a gypsy tent myself.
Cat is such a great character and made me laugh so damn much. Just seeing her in the Renaissance period but talking with her 21st century vocabulary made me laugh so much throughout this book. I loved how she never acted like anyone but herself. Cat goes on such a fantastic journey in this book. She definitely grows up a lot and develops into a better stronger character through her adventure in the past.
Lorenzo... *insert incredibly dream sigh here*. I totally fell in love with him from the first time he winked at her *swoon* You will definitely find another book boyfriend to swoon over in this book. He is perfect and sweet while being cocky and kinda a bad boy at the same time. All I can say about him is he's so perfect. I fell head-over-heels in love with him.

Rachel blends the familiarity of 21st Century culture with the classical time of Renaissance history. You will be addicted to this book and unable to stop reading until the last page. Rachel Harris is definitely an author to watch out for in the future and I for one will be reading every single one of her books that she publishes. I am in love with yet another author. She is brilliant. Rachel made the impossible possible. She made me fall in love with a book involving a historical era. I can't wait for the second book in this series and see what happens next.

This has been rereleased with a cute new cover and I confess I would have missed the book had it used the original one.
Cat is a fan of Renaissance art but finds herself in a conundrum as she's come Florence with her smitten father and her future stepmother, who won't stop planning for her Sweet Sixteen. As she goes for a walk on her own, she meets a gypsy, who transports her into the sixteenth century, with a new identity and family. That's where she also meets the aspiring artist Lorenzo, in whom she finds a reason to fight for what she wants.
I confess I wasn't in the right moment to read this or I could have enjoyed it more. Still, I don't think I'd give it four stars. I can't judge the research involved—although I'm sure the author put effort on accuracy—but the writing was more of the same. Most of the time, it felt like I was watching some movie, as this plot is much more recurrent in movies.
I'd say it needed more polishing. Cat's thoughts were all over the place. I was glad she considered the clichés—like when she says she knows she'll be eventually back. I guess this is what diverges the most from other stories, in which the time-traveler character loses pages and pages or even whole chapters angsting about whether he will ever go home, when the tone of the story makes it obvious he will. Still, I was still a little bored whenever Cat started thinking too much—again, I know I got this book at the wrong moment. I'm sure younger readers won't be as sensitive to this.
Continuing on how Rachel Harris knew how to play the cliché, I really liked the insertion of Niccolo. I'd prefer him if he were a little less of a villain but he gave some life to the story. I don't even like this type of plot but I liked it here, the book needed it. It brought adversity a little too late but it was present, as well as many comic moments.
In all, it was an enjoyable read but I missed feeling engaged to it. There was something with the romance and the lightheartedness Cat dealt with her predicament that didn't bring me as close as I needed to the story in order to feel it more. It's hard to explain well, but it's still what happened.
I see this is the first of a trilogy and I found the idea very funny for a series. I do consider checking the following books, looking forward to seeing how Harris has progressed.

Hlavní hrdinka chytrá a pitomá zároveň (jak už to tak bývá), zápletka trošku legrační, neschází patetické pohledy do očí, láska jak trám a čokoládové oči hlavního hrdiny. Catarinin batoh, který vidíte na obálce, působí trošku jako Hermionina kabelka, protože se v něm skrývá všechno od zubního kartáčku, tužidla na vlasy až po náhradní baterku do iPhonu. A to si jeho majitelka vyrazila jen na procházku po Florencii, nebalila se do 16. století… Přes tyhle úsměvné detaily věřím, že vás knížka bude bavit. A budete se u ní nablble usmívat. Protože tahle Cat by z fleku mohla být kámoška Gwendolyn, moc by si rozuměly. Obě totiž ví, že láska nezná čas ;)

I was lucky enough to get a copy of this book from the author, and I'll be completely up front about the fact that she's a friend of mine, so I am definitely biased. I still thought this book was fantastic! It was fresh, and heartfelt, and beautifully written. The characters were deep and real, and I felt what they felt. The happiness and heartache both.

This book is all things cute, adorable, cuddly, come-give-me-a-hug-and-never-let-go awesome. I couldn't get enough of it because of its simplicity and adorable plot. This is one easy read that I highly recommend to any reader. It can be finished in a single sitting and the moral of the story is one for any young girl to learn. It is clear that this novel is geared towards a younger young adult audience, but here I am at age seventeen completely gushing over it.

But Cat quickly does something unlike herself when she enters a gypsy tent that will send her back in time to live with her ancestors while she learns some valuable life lessons, all with the help of her wonderful ancestral cousins Alessandra and Cipriano, the amazingly gorgeous and artistic Lorenzo, and the creepy suitor Niccolo.
The characterization in this novel is sheer genius. I felt for every character within minutes of being introduced to them. Cat was a strong main character that just wanted to get away from the spotlight. She was smart and yearned for true friends. She was the perfect gateway to experience emotions as we read. Both Alessandra and Cipriano are easily likeable as well. Alessandra is the friend and sister that Cat always wished for. Cipriano is always poised, only giving into his playful side when around friends, especially Lorenzo. And Lorenzo...how he can so easily jumble a girls thoughts. Originally a player, he quickly falls for Cat's unique futuristic ways while in the Renaissance time period as he struggled to follow his dreams of being an artist. Trust me when I say that Lorenzo certainly is a swoon-worthy boy. Niccolo made my skin crawl. Of course, characters like him are not meant to be likable, but I can't help the respect I feel when an author so expertly writes a villain that makes you shiver in disgust. Bravo, Rachel! I loved the supporting characters just as much as I loved the main characters.
The plot was unique and fresh. Thought it was simple, it was full of amazing emotional moments, epiphanies, and laughs. Anyone who does not have prior knowledge of Italy can easily get immersed in the story and learn. For those who do have prior knowledge of Italy, you can see all of your history lessons coming to life. Whether it be visiting the statue of David mere months after it was created or having to survive being strung into an unforgiving corset, all experiences of the sixteenth century are present in the novel with a hint of present-day flare at the hands of Cat's vocabulary and trusty backpack full of contraband futuristic items. Reading this book will be easy-peasy.
I have to dock a half of a star for the ending. That cliff-hanger! So completely welcome because it sets up an amazing second story, but so completely hated because I want to know what happens now. Rachel Harris, your writing will be the end of me because of an overwhelming anxiety!

Harris will capture your heart easily with her debut novel and amazing writing style and her characters will make it impossible to ever let go.
This book is all things cute, adorable, cuddly, come-give-me-a-hug-and-never-let-go awesome. I couldn't get enough of it because of its simplicity and adorable plot. This is one easy read that I highly recommend to any reader. It can be finished in a single sitting and the moral of the story is one for any young girl to learn. It is clear that this novel is geared towards a younger young adult audience, but here I am at age seventeen completely gushing over it.

This book wasn't good, it wasn't amazing either...it was absolutely enchanting! I'm not one for time-travel books, especially renaissance ones, but the moment it mentioned Italy, I was hooked! This book contains everything one might need for an emotional read. Seriously, you can't count the number of emotions this book produced in me even on two hands. There was laughter, swooning, rolling around in my bed, crying, giggling, and gasping in shock occasionally (etc.). This book was very creatively and beautifully written. There was outstanding chemistry between Lorenzo and Cat. The detail with which Miss Harris has written her novel is also mind-blowing! There were gardens, balls, carriages, corsets, everything! It really felt like I was transported back to the sixteenth century Italy, but surprisingly, I didn't want to come back. All the technology in the world couldn't remove me from this book! From history to humor, Rachel Harris's new YA debut novel contains all the necessary devices a girl needs for an enjoyable read.
Cat is an amazing character! I would love to go on another adventure with her! She's so engaging and her personality is just too great! She was hilarious yet thoughtful, and shy yet spunky! My favorite part was her language problems once she was transported back to the sixteenth century. One might think that a mix of 21st century talk and 16th century talk might sound awkward, but it actually worked quite well. The reason she's transported back in time is because she has 'lessons that she must learn', and she did! She grew a lot as a character throughout the novel, but still stayed true to herself. She opened up her heart to love and made new friends. Cat Crawford made for an amazing young adult heroine, and I never wanted to stop reading about her wonderful journeys in renaissance Italy.
The other characters were absolutely great as well! Such as Alessandra (I think that's how it's spelled) and Lorenzo, and the gypsie! Oh my god, I never thought I would want to go into a gypsie tent as bad as I do now! I need an adventure of my own, lol. Alessandra was Cat's 'sister' in the 16th century, and she's one of the only people that Cat's opened up to. She was shy, sweet, kind, and a great supportive character to Cat in the novel. Now, finally, we get to Lorenzo. Damn, that boy is one hell of a yumsicle. I couldn't get enough of his beautiful 16th century phrases, and I thought I had to see a psychiatrist with the way I was swooning on every page he was mentioned in. He's completely and utterly sweet with a devilish charm to him. I don't think guys could get any more perfect than him! There's this one line that Alessandra says: "He's met his match" or something, but I totally agree with her, Cat and Lorenzo are perfect for each other.
This book rendered me speechless by the time I was done with it at 4:30 AM in the morning. In my opinion the romance was greater than Romeo and Juliet, or at least, it was really close to being it! The setting that Rachel Harris has created in my mind is gorgeous and breath taking. I fell head-over-heels for all of the characters, seriously! I love every single one of them, they were all very fun to read about and great to know! I never thought I would love young adult contemporary book as much as I love this one! This is great for historical romance lovers and just plain romantics too! A wonderful blend of the 21st and 16th century which I did not want to leave! I can't wait to go on my next adventure with Cat Crawford in Rachel Harris's sequel to My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century.

Imagine finding yourself in sixteenth century renaissance Italy, you speak fluent Italian, whereas before you could only speak a few words. A family takes you in mistaking you for a girl named Patience and you’re supposed aunt has a scary resemblance to your estranged mother. That’s the situation Cat finds herself in, whilst on the way back to the hotel to meet her father and his fiancée she comes across a tent in the middle of nowhere. Cat’s never a person to do something on instinct, but curiosity takes the better of her and she decides to check the tent out. Stepping in from the 21st century, the odd lady she finds in the tent does some sort of mojo and Cat finds herself stepping out in the 16th century.
The premise of this book is what grabbed my attention in the first place. First of all finding yourself in a completely different century is odd enough, but then being mistaken for someone is just the icing on the cake. It was interesting to see how Cat would adapt to the situation; she did find herself at times slipping up and going back to the ways she was most familiar with such as using terminology that people in the sixteenth century would have not been accustom to and then trying to dig herself out of the situation. This book was so much fun with all these awkward situations cropping up all over the place.
The characters were an interesting bunch too, Cat was an easy character to warm up to, despite finding herself in a completely different century, she was quick to adapt to her new surroundings and strangers taking her in. She always had hope in the back of her mind that she would make it back home, but she still continued to make the most of every single situation. Her fierceness also helped alleviate several problems along the way. The whole experience was an eye opener for Cat, it made her take a step back and take into consideration all the things she was taking for granted.
Lorenzo *sigh* this guy was so dreamy; the way he spoke reminded me so much of Thor from the Avengers.
“Rest assured not a finger will be placed upon
signorina Patience. You have my word”
And since that image was placed in my head, it was extremely hard getting rid of! But he certainly lived up to my Thor expectations. He had incredible lines like the one above that could just make you melt, full peach coloured lips, a devastating smile and he always did keep to his word.
My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century certainly is a read which keeps you on your toes, as you’re constantly questioning yourself throughout the book; why was Cat sent to the sixteenth century in the first place? And why did they mistake her for someone else? And so at the end I naturally assumed that we would get our answers and everything would be neatly resolved, so the bombshell at the end really threw me.
Overall My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century was a beautifully written and fun debut; I can’t wait to dive into the next book as soon as possible.

What a refreshing difference!
I'd never heard of Rachel Harris, author of this wonderful 'My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century' book, but having read this, she is up there on my favourites shelf with the others!
This book flows, the storyline is easy and refreshing to read, and me without the imagination, I read this book like I'd watch a film on the tv, I pictured everything and 'felt' the emotions that were tied to each and every page.
Cat is dreading her 16th party bash that her father and future step-mother have planned for her, or rather, her step-mother wants to plan it and her father is going along with that... Living in the medias eye because of her famous parents (actor mum and director dad), Cat always tries to do something that she thinks the others expect of her, but she mainly hides away.
Stumbling on a gypsey in the middle of Florence gave Cat a journey/trip of a lifetime, she ends up in the 16th century.
I didn't expect the adventure to be what it was, I honestly didn't know what to expect at all and once I was hanging onto every word that was written, I began to think of how this was going to end - WOW!!! I didn't expect that either!!!!
I can't wait to re-group with the wonderful characters and Cat in book 2!!!
I would recommend this to everyone - I FREAKIN loved it!!!

I'm a sucker for a time travel book, especially one where the MC goes super far back in time, preferably to a country as fun as Italy. So I had pretty high expectations for this book. And thankfully, they were all warranted - because this book is ADORABLE!
First and foremost, I'd like to say thank you, Rachel Harris, for writing a character who takes one for the team at the end and does what's right instead of necessarily what she'd want. I was really pleased with Cat's choices throughout the book, especially in terms of her romance.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. First and foremost, this book is just fun. It's cute and funny and total brain candy. Cat is a good narrator, and she made me snort a couple times. And while her attitude at the beginning was a little irritating, it was clear that she was going to change throughout the book. There's definitely some character development here!
I also really loved the setting. Any time a book is set in another country, I sort of perk. There have been a lot of books set in Italy recently, though, so it was possible that this one could have gotten a little lost. But I thought Rachel Harris did a good job of describing the time period and all the Italian-ness. You definitely feel like you've been transported to Renaissance Florence right along with Cat.
And the romance. In a word, it was precious. I'm always a little wary of a romance that takes place over such a short time. But I felt like based on the time period and the story, it made sense. And there was no dropping of "I love you" or anything, so no complaints from me. Also, Lorenzo was really cute. I love a flirty love interest that's also nice, if a tiny bit cocky.
The end. Okay. I'll be honest: I couldn't stop smiling. It was so perfectly fitting. And the last page? Ahh! I'm dying for the next book!

My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century is just that...Super! Seriously had me from word one. I was lucky to be the author's critique partner so that I had a chance to read it already. The story moves along through Cat's journey at a fast pace, each sentence drawing you further into her amazing adventure. And once you meet Lorenzo...forget about it! Your heart will be swooning. This is one book that will keep you turning the pages.

Honestly, I thought it was okay at the beginning. It was cute and fluffy and had all the necessary elements a chic-flic needed. I liked the characters- Cipriano and Lorenzo, in particular. The chemistry between Patience/Caterina and Lorenzo- was undeniable and hot.
But I did feel at times, that the plotline went a little too slow. When I reached near the end of the novel, I was thinking of giving it up at times and not reading the sequel. But then the end came and it just blew me away. Rachel Harris had left a very taunting cliff-hanger there. Of course I had to read the next book. It was very surprising, to say the truth.
I found myself wavering between two stars and three stars but the cliffhanger was the tipping point. Three stars it is.

I absolutely LOVED this book!! I wanted to live in those beautifully written pages. Time travel, Italy, hotties...what more could you ask for?! This is a MUST read! My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century has it all! This will easily be a classic that should be on your shelves. Rachel Harris has penned a remarkable story. I'm a huge fan of the Renaissance, beautiful flowing dresses, vivid scenes and Romance. Travel back in time with Catarina, as she discovers what life is like in the sixteenth century and opens her heart up to possibilities. This book will sweep you off your feet. Review to come...

First I have a weeklong exams ahead of me. I even notified my fellow Book Whales that I would be delayed with some of my reviews. But as I might say, I caught the procrastination bug or rather the bug of I-don’t-want-to-start-studying-yet. I was actually very intrigued with this story before and asked TheUnseelieNerd to get it for me if she can and today she actually did. It’s my perfect distraction from starting my painfully long review and I never noticed that I already finished the novel and am now writing my review for all of you. So here it goes…
I have to put out that I really adore this novel. It has that simplicity in it yet intriguing at the same time. It presented several scenarios that just made me feel all giddy and snickering. Also, the way the author painted the beauty of Italy is simply breathtaking. Personally, I’ve never been to that place but she made me want to actually pack my bags and go there (which I really hope someday I can do). The arts, the people, the infrastructure that was written just kept on jumping in my imagination and you can almost feel the Italian spirit in it.
Character wise, I love every person that Ms. Rachel Harris wrote in the novel from the people of the sixteenth century to those in the future and even the gypsy. Each and every character is unique and you can’t get enough of them. But I’m only going to point out two of the main characters I love.
Cat, for me, is your typical 21st teenager, sans the parents being major big shots in the Hollywood community. Being rich and in the limelight you expect her to do something wrong. Like a blunder or something that would show that she’s the wild child of the celebrity family and post it all over the tabloids and that’s exactly her dilemma in the novel. Cat despite her spunky attitude tries to be the perfect nice child resulting for her being the loner that she is. Entering back to the sixteenth century made her discover more about herself that she would ever know. She learned how to open her heart and slowly made people enter it one by one. For some reason, I really love her. And I especially like how she sometimes blurts out her modern American linggos such as “easy breasy” and more that made her ancestors kind of say those words too (which I find super funny).
And Lorenzo, Cat’s love interest or should I say every girl’s dream boy. When I’m reading Lorenzo I can’t help but swoon at him. He’s like the perfect guy. He paints, handsome and devilishly charming. I find it really nice how Cat tries her best at first not to fall for him because of his looks. It is really fun to read how she sometimes talk to herself that she won’t be like any other girl that falls in love with the charming Lorenzo. But as you know, in the end love conquers all or maybe I might say that tension can’t really be ignored. Reading about their interaction made me all giddy in the whole story and I kind of wonder what will happen when she returns back to her time line.
The only problem for me (if this is even considered a problem) is what happened after she returned back to her timeline. I feel like after she returned the past was explained so little. Like if (this would be a spoiler) her counterpart and Lorenzo became a couple or he remained single loving the future Cat. (I’m hoping they are together but that would kind of ruin the ancestor kind of thing and confused us but oh well). Well, at the end Cat reluctance to actually search something’s about Lorenzo kind of made me a little disappointed.
On the other hand, I still like the way the author end the story where there is a window of you creating your own ending. Except of course if she’s thinking of creating another one, which I think might happen with the way it ended. Anyways, I can’t wait to read the next book, if there is one, and I must say I enjoyed reading this.
Overall, I recommend this book for teens that loves to read a good light romance story as well as those people who enjoy reading a time travel book. I can also see people who appreciates the beauty of a place would adore this and those who wants to discover oneself.

First I have a weeklong exams ahead of me. I even notified my fellow Book Whales that I would be delayed with some of my reviews. But as I might say, I caught the procrastination bug or rather the bug of I-don’t-want-to-start-studying-yet. I was actually very intrigued with this story before and asked TheUnseelieNerd to get it for me if she can and today she actually did. It’s my perfect distraction from starting my painfully long review and I never noticed that I already finished the novel and am now writing my review for all of you. So here it goes…
I have to put out that I really adore this novel. It has that simplicity in it yet intriguing at the same time. It presented several scenarios that just made me feel all giddy and snickering. Also, the way the author painted the beauty of Italy is simply breathtaking. Personally, I’ve never been to that place but she made me want to actually pack my bags and go there (which I really hope someday I can do). The arts, the people, the infrastructure that was written just kept on jumping in my imagination and you can almost feel the Italian spirit in it.
Character wise, I love every person that Ms. Rachel Harris wrote in the novel from the people of the sixteenth century to those in the future and even the gypsy. Each and every character is unique and you can’t get enough of them. But I’m only going to point out two of the main characters I love.
Cat, for me, is your typical 21st teenager, sans the parents being major big shots in the Hollywood community. Being rich and in the limelight you expect her to do something wrong. Like a blunder or something that would show that she’s the wild child of the celebrity family and post it all over the tabloids and that’s exactly her dilemma in the novel. Cat despite her spunky attitude tries to be the perfect nice child resulting for her being the loner that she is. Entering back to the sixteenth century made her discover more about herself that she would ever know. She learned how to open her heart and slowly made people enter it one by one. For some reason, I really love her. And I especially like how she sometimes blurts out her modern American linggos such as “easy breasy” and more that made her ancestors kind of say those words too (which I find super funny).
And Lorenzo, Cat’s love interest or should I say every girl’s dream boy. When I’m reading Lorenzo I can’t help but swoon at him. He’s like the perfect guy. He paints, handsome and devilishly charming. I find it really nice how Cat tries her best at first not to fall for him because of his looks. It is really fun to read how she sometimes talk to herself that she won’t be like any other girl that falls in love with the charming Lorenzo. But as you know, in the end love conquers all or maybe I might say that tension can’t really be ignored. Reading about their interaction made me all giddy in the whole story and I kind of wonder what will happen when she returns back to her time line.
The only problem for me (if this is even considered a problem) is what happened after she returned back to her timeline. I feel like after she returned the past was explained so little. Like if (this would be a spoiler) her counterpart and Lorenzo became a couple or he remained single loving the future Cat. (I’m hoping they are together but that would kind of ruin the ancestor kind of thing and confused us but oh well). OMG. There's not enough words to describe how much I LOVED this book. Ever since getting an e-ARC late last month, I've already devoured it three times since. It's just that spectacular and mesmerizing. It's already got a place in my favourite debuts and favourite books ever.
What really made this debut book stand out was the characters. Yes, y'all know that I'm a big characters girl. I'm one of those readers where the characters are the most important element of the story. And yes. THIS BOOK HAS GOT EVERYTHING I LOVE IN A BOOK. And I just love love love all of the characters. (Well, except one or maybe two, you know who I'm talking about, right?) Especially Cat/Patience, Alessandra, Cipriano and Lorenzo. *Sigh*. Rachel has written some of my favourite characters EVER.
I want the main character Cat as my best friend. Seriously. This girl just rocks. She's my YA girl alike. She's got a great sense of humor, she's independent and fiercely determined. Not to mention she's funny as hell. I was literally laughing out loud at some of her lines. And what really made me love her more is that she's SO relatable. It may or may not be 'cause we're the same age. And I love that there's mentions of pop culture and the media, and people like Rihanna, Miley, and the Kardashians and that she's such a girly girl. AND she's got a painted pear tattoo. YES.
I really don't want to make this just telling you about how much I adored the rest of the characters, but I have to mention Alessandra. Or Less, as Cat calls her. Cat's 'cousin' was just SO adorable and so sweet and so nice. Gosh. I also didn't expect to like Less's brother Cip (Cipriano), he suprised me a lot. And I don't even need to mention Lorenzo. SWOON. As if I need another reason to wish I was born in the Renaissance time. And Reyna is such an interesting character. I don't think I've ever read about a gypsy as captivating as her!
Italy!! This book is actually set in ITALY. *faints* Yes. Finally. I've never been to Italy (though I freaking want to!) but reading this book just WOW it made me feel like I was actually in Florence, and in the Renaissance time itself. Rachel just has a way of making you feel like you're actually there. Didn't I tell you she's a genius? :)
About the actual plot itself, well what else can I say? It was just perfect. I don't know about you, but I found it pretty unpredictable. And I had such a great time trying to guess what's going to happen next. I couldn't stop reading this (read it in one sitting) and the writing and pacing was just right. :)
I really really appreciated the lessons that Cat learned at the end of the book. Her character development was absolutely astounding. I loved seeing her grow. And I loved (I've lost count how many times I've said LOVED on this review) how highly creative this book is. I loved the idea of the gypsy tent and how Rachel made Cat's family really famous in the modern day world. I haven't read any YA book so far that has a MC with a famous director for a father and an actress for a mother. Nor the idea for a story surrounding her Sweet Sixteen. And lemme just tell you - my Sweet Sixteenth earlier this year wasn't nearly as exciting as this. :P
I don't think I've ever read a book as light or as fun as this. This just reminds me why I love reading. Why I love YA. Rachel Harris, I applaud you! I've already pre-ordered this (AND YOU SHOULD, TOO!) and I can say that I'll happily read everything that Rachel writes. This writer is one to watch out.

Stars to infinity! How on earth would you rate such a whimsical and amazing work of complete art such as this? Rachel Harris created a character that, in my mind, will become a literary classic. I've always been in love with time travel historical fiction novels and this addition to the genre is a welcome one.
Cat is by no means a typical teenage girl. Most girls spend their evenings with friends, hanging out, getting in trouble, and going on dates. Not so much, for Cat. She is the daughter of a scandalous actress who deserted her and Cat's father when Cat was young. Her scandals are constantly being thrown into Cat's face on the covers of tabloids all over the world. As if that isn't enough for any teenage girl to handle, Cat's father is a well known film director. Although he strives for Cat to live a normal life as much as possible, it simply isn't easy when the paparazzi are always following you, just knowing you will mess up just like your mom.
To make matters worse is Cat's over the top, future stepmother. Miss I-Can't-Wait-To-Use-My Fiance-To-Better-My-Own-Career Jenna. Cat wants to stay out of the media yet party planner Jenna wants to throw her an extravagant sweet sixteen bash. Sounds innocent right? Not! If done correctly, this extravaganza will be broadcast on Mtv and will be the ticket to Jenna's success. Selfish much?
It's no wonder Cat's Dad has agreed to take her on a trip to Italy. He's totally trying to butter her up. Cat has always been in love with Italy and their art. She aspires to be an artist one day, herself. In her spare time, she studies everything she can about Renaissance Artists.
Knowing she will eventually have to give an answer about this dreaded birthday bash, she decides she needs a bit of time for herself in Italy. After assuring her dad she would return for dinner with him and Jenna, he reluctantly agrees. While exploring, Cat stumbles upon a gypsy tent. Very curious and with time to spare, she enters. After what seems to be some normal gypsy mumbo jumbo, Cat feels something unusual happening around her and soon realizes she has been transported back to Renaissance Italy.
Cat finds herself thrown into a conundrum of events. She must pretend to be someone she is not. Perhaps, however, this new person is who she needed to be all along. Is this where she was meant to be, with the chance of love or must she find a way back to her father and her own time?
Thank you, Rachel, for creating a masterpiece I am sure I will reread many times. I'm already looking forward to sharing it with my daughter. Looking forward to the next installment in this captivating series. You rock, girl! Congrats on your debut. You can only go up from here!

I have been basically reading depressing, dystopian YA novels for the past month, and needed a lighthearted read to shake things up. This book had been getting good reviews so I decided to give it a try.
My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris is a cute read that focuses on Cat, a cynical but somewhat spoiled 16 year old, who doesn't want her father to marry his current girlfriend, although all signs point to her being pretty nice. Sounds like your typical teen novel. Then enters a twist. Cat and her family go to Florence, where she meets a magical gypsy (aren't they all?) who whisks her off to the 16th century to "learn some lessons." OK, I'm making this a little more basic than the plot really is-- but essentially, we are swept away like Cat, and watch this modern teen try to make it in the 16th century. Gorgeous gowns, hot guys, and intrigue all abound in this book.
There's a lot to like about this book. Cat, although spoiled, is a fun protagonist. That's a tough balance to make but Harris pulls it off. I loved all the descriptions of both the modern world and the old world. The art references, etc, are great as well, and I learned a thing or two! I liked that Cat also was able to fumble and fall but get up again (HEART the singing debacle!), as she wasn't perfect the first (or maybe second) time around. And she definitely had some room to grow and develop over the course of the novel. Alessandra was a wonderful side character, and I enjoyed learning about Cat's family, overall.
My biggest beef with this book, which is not as much a criticism of the book but more of an opinion about it, is how clueless Cat is, almost to the point of me exclaiming, "How did you not see that coming?" But then, I thought about this for a while and pictured my younger 16 year old self in this position. While certain aspects of the plot were crystal clear in my now adult head, I could see how this may not even appear on her radar, especially coming from the modern world back to an older one.
Overall, a fun, light read (just what I needed) with some great characters and terrific description, with room for a sequel or two! Here's to hoping!

I was planning on reading My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century, then doing some work. Silly me. My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century is a book that demands to be read in one sitting; that absolutely, definitively, cannot be put down. So forget work. Or doing laundry. Or whatever else you have planned. Because once you start traveling through Italy with Cat Crawford, trust me, you won’t want to stop.
Ok, so, yeah, the girl on the cover is wearing an 18th century dress. (Let’s be honest here, people – a lot of 16th century fashion is kind of fug. Whoever came up with the neck ruff belongs in the same fashion hell as the person who brought us parachute pants.) But I’m way more interested in the accuracy of what’s inside the book. The history in MSSSC is impeccably researched, fascinating, and always correct, down to every step in the branle des lavandieres. And Rachel Harris describes everything so beautifully. I was starting to look around for my own gypsy fortune teller, praying I'd be transported to the 1500s.
Cat is a wonderful protagonist, funny and real, strong yet flawed. Every step she takes through Renaissance Florence is a delight. The romantic interest is more than swoony, and there’s a threatening figure in the romance department that made my heart speed up as I read faster and faster, terrified for the future of Cat and Lorenzo! I loved how Romeo-Juliet-Paris it was. Honestly, me describing this book will not do it justice. You just HAVE to read it. HAVE TO! And the ending?!!! ZOMG. Book two cannot come soon enough!!
My only wish is that someday there’s a movie version that actually features Miley Cyrus singing a ballad about our pasts being the key to our futures. Because I would totally put that on my iPod.

Maybe more like 2.5 stars...
I was utterly charmed by portions of this book. The author is great with descriptions and details and it has the mushy romantic bits that never go too far but make you smile.
However. I couldn't stand the main character. Cat was so whiny and clueless! I was impressed with how calmly she handled everything at first (time travel? No big!) but then she refuses to adapt to her surroundings. She continues to use "modern day" words and slang (which are already fairly dated) and is shocked when the people around her act like...well, people in the 1600th century! I didn't really buy the romance or her character change.
Basically, this book was great...outside of Cat.

Caterina Crawford is in Florence Italy with her father and soon to be stepmother, the latter of which she isn't too crazy about. With her dad being a famous director and her mom, who she can't stand by the way, being a famous actress, Cat wants nothing more than to stay out of the limelight and remain unnoticed. After talking her dad into letting her tour on her own one morning, she finds herself in front of a gypsy tent. Though not something she would typically do, she goes inside, where she meets Reyna. After their encounter she is preparing to leave when Reyna notices her tattoo. One thing leads to another and Cat finds herself walking out of the gypsy tent and into the 16th century, with nothing but her backpack. Cat, now finds herself known as Patience D'Angeli. She meets up with her cousins, who are a whole lot more than once removed, Alessandra and Cipriano. She deems them Less and Cip, and she moves in with their family. Needless to say the challenges that the difference in culture presents take some getting used to, and try and she may, her 21st century self tends to shine through, sometimes brightly.
Cip and Less introduce Cat to Lorenzo. Ah, Lorenzo Cappelli, the 16th century Italian hottie, swoon, swoon, swoon. Cat pegs him as a player, but try and she may, she can't help but fall for him. When she finds out he is an artist, which is also her passion, she is pretty much done for. She loves spending time with her cousins and Lorenzo, but when Niccolo, who is a lot older and also a business acquaintance of her Uncle's, starts showing her attention, she gets kind of creeped out. Then when her aunt and uncle drop a 16th century bombshell on her, she wants nothing more than to find her way back home, but she just doesn't know how.
I typically do not read a great deal of historical fiction, but My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century was very entertaining and I really enjoyed it. I loved Cat. She is so funny. The characters were all so well written and Rachel Harris did an excellent job of mixing the "new" with the "old" in terms of their interactions and dialogue. I loved the relationship that developed between Cat and Alessandra, and even Cipriano turned out to be quite entertaining himself. The romance and chemistry between Cat and Lorenzo was hot, and despite the constraints of chaperons and the lack of ability to be alone very much, they had some pretty intense moments. The story line was imaginative and creative, and Rachel did an excellent job of making this a historical fiction book, yet something that would also appeal to those who typically do not read this genre. The setting was beautiful, and I loved the way Rachel Harris incorporated and captured the art and scenery from the Renaissance period in the story. This is a fun and fast paced read, and I really liked it. Whether you enjoy historical fiction or not, this is something that all YA romance lovers will like, and I highly recommend checking it out.

The characters were all so well written and Rachel Harris did an excellent job of mixing the "new" with the "old" in terms of their interactions and dialogue. I loved the relationship that developed between Cat and Alessandra, and even Cipriano turned out to be quite entertaining himself. The romance and chemistry between Cat and Lorenzo was hot, and despite the constraints of chaperons and the lack of ability to be alone very much, they had some pretty intense moments. The story line was imaginative and creative, and Rachel did an excellent job of making this a historical fiction book, yet something that would also appeal to those who typically do not read this genre. The setting was beautiful, and I loved the way Rachel Harris incorporated and captured the art and scenery from the Renaissance period in the story. This is a fun and fast paced read, and I really liked it. Whether you enjoy historical fiction or not, this is something that all YA romance lovers will like, and I highly recommend checking it out.

Truly delightful!
Looking for a book that is fun, entertaining- a pure delight? Look no further. My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris is a wonderful book full of time traveling, loveable characters, Renaissance jargon matched with modern jargon and fantastic scenes. The true reality of Renaissance Italy time period was depicted in this story. Like marriage laws and the lack of drinking water.
Cat is a delightful main character that is easy to relate to and I am very glad to go on this journey to Renaissance Italy with her and her trusty backpack. I love feeling her adoration for art. She grows throughout the story as she learns to appreciate her life. At the beginning of the story, Cat is pretty lonely in the friendship department but throughout her trip to Renaissance Italy she lets her guard down and make a good friend with her sweet ancestor Alessandra.
Alessandra has more then my favorite name ever. She is bubbly and fun and desires to be an actor. I can relate to that; I always wanted to be an actor (maybe in college). But she cannot because she is living in a time where it is illegal for women to be actors. She was a well-developed friend for Cat and I cannot wait for her story in June. I need it!!!!! I wish I could be a friend with her and talk about theater with her. She is so passionate about it.
Lorenzo is the Italian man Cat falls in love it. While, they both are attracted to each other the moment they meet, they take their time to fall in love and start to admit they love each other. He is compassionate, a gentleman and delightful.
The plot is full of hilarious scenes. The most memorable one is when Alessandra, Cat, Cipriano (Alesaandra’s serious, yet caring brother and Lorenzo’s best friend) and Lorenzo have fun in the Italian countryside and, later, act out the tale of Snow White. My favorite character Alessandra did a swell Evil Witch. I love to be in that gorgeous field someday that was described beautifully. It was a true scene of friendship and happiness.
Overall, My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century by Rachel Harris is not a story you want to miss. The next time you are feeling sad or stressed, read this book and I promise it can bring joy to your life.

This review is hard for me because I am trying to figure out how I can express to you just how endearing and sweet this read was for me without giving anything away.
I guess the best way would be with one simple word, Lorenzo.
Lorenzo made this story. His character was just...perfect. This truly was one of the sweetest (clean) romances I have read yet this year. Everything that came out of that boy's mouth was swoon worthy. I couldn't of asked for a better male protagonist.
This story was so imaginative and simply put, the kind of book I simple devour and can't get enough of.
Not only did I fall in love with the Renaissance scenery and world Harris managed to make come to life (so much so that I felt like I was there), but the characters were all fantastic.
I loved every single one of them, even the creepy Niccolo. Aunt Francesca was such a wonderful woman and everything I would imagine a woman of the Renaissance era to be like. Many times her kind nature and words to Cat made me teary eyed. Alessandra, Uncle Marco and Cip were no different. They too were such great strong secondary characters that I couldn't help but fall in love with.
I love how much Cat grew in this book and I think she was a great character too, she seemed very real and down to earth to me and I really loved that about her.
This whole story was just very well written and executed and I loved every single minute of it. In fact I found as the story started coming to a close I was reading it slower because I just didn't want it to end. I didn't want to have to say good-bye too all the characters I felt like were friends.
I know that this will be a story that I will be thinking about long after it has ended. The characters just stay with you and leave a lasting impression.
And with the ending? Well lets just say that I am so excited! I think I even squealed a little with the prospect of another book coming! I am so excited for more of Cat and the gang!!
Bring it on Harris because I am so ready for it!

After turning the last page of My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century, my mouth agape and my mind going in a thousand different directions, I smiled. The book is a brilliant stroke of creativity. Rachel Harris knows how to put together a book saturated with history, laughs, romance and emotions.
Cat Crawford is full of surprises and such a delightful character to get to know. I have to admit, I had qualms about reading a book with a 15 year old protagonist. But Cat's clever insight and maturity removed all doubt about My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century being a fickle read from the first page in when Cat is actually on a plane.
I don't particularly enjoy historical fiction or time travel but who knew that the genre could be so much fun to read! I have been turned into a fan. Rachel Harris has a way with words, making them flow together that my eyes were flowing across the pages as fast as they could. I found myself getting lost in the sixteenth century, falling in love with Less, Cip, Lorenzo and even Aunt Francesca and Uncle Marco. I found myself getting angry at Antonia and then at Niccolo for being so, so- creeptastic!
Lorenzo is another character I felt wanting to read more about. He is a fittingly handsome Renaissance gentleman and extremely swoon-worthy at that. At first, everything about Lorenzo screamed that he will be a very bad influence for Cat. But I was proved wrong and the guy had a pretty sensitive side as well. And Lucas had me at the first wink, I was swooning right along with Cat.
My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century is a light read but it does come with an emotional side. The vivid setting of the Renaissance along with the appreciation of the arts in the novel fascinated me to no end. I had been looking forward to read it ever since its first cover was revealed. Also, I just found out today that there will be a companion novel, A Tale of Two Centuries. The ending of My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century has definitely left me wanting more!
