Rate this book
In New York Times bestselling author Stacy Finz's Nugget romance series, a picturesque California mountain town is the perfect place for fresh air—and fresh starts, especially when it comes to love.

One divorce, one mind-blowing kiss with a stranger (code name: Matthew McConaughey), and one year later, Joey Nix desperately needs to find a job in Nugget. It's the only chance she'll have of sharing custody of her sweet little daughter with her soon to be remarried, renowned surgeon ex-husband. Luckily, Joey's qualified to work as an in-home caregiver. Coincidentally, a job offer comes from the afore mentioned unforgettably sexy stranger (real name: Ryder Knight). It's a terrible, irresistible idea . . .

Ryder needs help with his ailing, depressed mother, and darn if Joey isn't the best candidate. Good thing he'll be sleeping in his camper, because their chemistry is still crackling. Besides, the loss of his wife and unborn child five years earlier have left Ryder squarely focused on his trucking company—and even that's on shaky ground. Still, Joey knows how to lift his mom's spirits. And his too—despite a troubling secret she's shared with him. But when she asks him to accompany her to her ex's wedding, Ryder “I don't do weddings" Knight will have to do a lot of soul searching. What he discovers just might surprise them both . . .

This is a romance, and this is the 12th book in the Holding On series. I have read and review the 11th book in this series, and I loved the 11th book in this series. I have to say this book has one of the weirdest book starts that I have ever read. At first I was thinking some how my kindle started the book in the middle of a chapter and not the first page. After, I checked that it was a first chapter. Then, I tried to figure out what characters came for the book 11 I read before. In time, I figure out Joey was Ethan's ex-wife and mother of his child. This book picks right up where the last one ends (Kind of because it is just a flash back we are getting right at the very start of the book). The book really picks up one year after the other book ended. It starts with Joey and the guy she just starts kissing outside the bar at the end of Book 11. That guy is Ryder. After, I got my mind wrapped around what was going on I loved this book so much. I have to say I hated Joey's character in book 11, but In this book I loved getting to see her character in a better place. I feel in love with her character. I think Ryder was that right person for her. I loved all the characters in this book, and in this series that I have read. I really wanted to go back and read the first book in this series. I would have given this book 5 stars if the start of the book was better. I hate when I feel like I have to put in so much work to get into a book. I would say after the crazy first chapter everything flowed great and the writing after that was great. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Kensington Books) or author (Stacy Finz) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that. (*)

Holding On is the story of Joey, a recovering addict who moves to Nugget, CA to be close to her daughter. I enjoyed this story overall as it was a romance that focused on aspects other than just the love story. Ryder was also a complex, realistic character with an intriguing and heartbreaking backstory.

One of my favorite things was the portrayal of the elderly and loved how much Ryder cared for his mom's happiness and wellbeing. One thing I disliked was the rivalry with the noisy neighbors as it seemed to not serve a purpose in the story. The romance and story itself is mature without the unnecessary drama that most romance novels include. Joey is (again) a beautiful woman who doesn't know how beautiful she is, but in this story she actually acknowledges and explains her insecurities.

Apparently, this is a series of books based on this small California town, but this book is the first book I read (oops). I would like to also read the book that came before this and see Brynn's story of coming to Nugget and meeting Ethan, Joey's ex husband.

Holding On by Stacy Finz is the 12th book in the Nugget romance series, and my second book in the series. I read the 11th book, Choosing You which tells the love story between Brynn Barnes and Ethan Daniels. This book tells the story of Ethan's ex wife, Joey Nix and a stranger she kissed, code name Matthew McConaughey. His real name is Ryder Knight. Joey and Ryder are both wounded souls. I really enjoyed this book, I am going to go back and read the previous book in this series. If you enjoy romances, I highly recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Was I hooked by that book? I liked it. Holding On is the 12th book in the Nugget Series by Stacy Finz. I have really enjoyed following the lives of the people who have made Nugget their home.

Joey has finally scraped herself back together after her divorce from Ethan (his story is in Choosing You). She is moving to Nugget to be closer to her daughter and to be able to see her more. After the divorce, Ethan got full custody, and Joey desperately wants to be a part of her daughter's life again. She takes on a job as a live-in caregiver for Ryder's mother. Ryder wasn't too happy about hiring her, especially after the scorching kiss they had shared not too long ago.

I somehow missed the previous book with Ethan's story, so I had no idea who they were when I started this one. Joey came with a lot of baggage. She is recovering from an addiction, she is waiting to hear if her nursing license is going to be reinstated, and she has to somehow create a workable relationship with her ex, Ethan, if she wants to see her daughter regularly. For Joey, Nugget was absolutely a second chance. Ryder had some ghosts of his own to deal with. They helped each other heal. They were really good for each other.

Overall, I enjoyed their story. Joey and Rider worked well as a couple. There was plenty of chemistry. The story did get a bit intense between everything that the two of them had to deal with. I didn't care for Ryder's mom's nickname, Shiv. It made me think of prison fights.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review
A lovely story with a romantic couple slowly going from instant lust and attraction to deeper feelings and a meaningful connection, while encompassing some serious issues in the plot.
Ryder and Joey are both complex characters, troubled in different ways, and each of them found a certain inner peace after some difficult times. They also seem very normal people, with families, problems and a lot of baggage.
Of course, Ryder turns out to be even sexier and more attractive than he seems, when his multidimensional character shows the son, the husband, the business man, and all the hurt he carries. He’s such a solid, decent person.
In my opinion, the heroine was a rather unsympathetic character in the previous story (“Choosing You”); however, I really warmed up to her in this “Holding On” watching her find a kind of inner strength and stability and being generous with others (although I definitely don’t like what she did with Shiv’s letter).
I liked how Ryder and Joey did things together, how they communicated, and how their relatives played a role in the story, too. I wasn’t expecting at all that these two characters from the previous story in the "Nugget" series turned out to be so compelling; it was really a great surprise (particularly with the hero and all that hidden sadness).
Tackling some serious subjects through her characters, Stacy Finz gives the story depth and keeps the reading engaging.

Holding On is the twelfth novel in the Nugget series. The prologue in this story is the continuation of an event that occurs at the end of book eleven, so you might be a little confused as it reads like the middle of a story. However, this story is easy to understand even if you have never read the others as there are enough contexts and some exposition to catch the reader up in the events that occurred in the previous novel. The characters in this novel were featured in the previous, but now we get to see Joey get her own story and get to know more about the mysterious “Matthew McConaughey” she was flirting with during the previous novel.

Joey Nix (formerly Daniels) is now divorced from her ex-husband, Ethan. He is now settled with Brynn after their courtship during book eleven. After being sober for the past two years when she became addicted to pills and is getting her life back on track. She has applied for an appeal to get her nursing license back, so she can return to working in a hospital, and is living in limbo as she awaits a decision. In the meantime, she has been working as a home care nurse in Reno where she lives with her parents. Now that Ethan trusts her to spend more time with their daughter Roni, Joey dreams of living in Nugget. Work and money are an issue, so now she must find a solution. Enter her former flirt partner, real name, Ryder.

Ryder Knight owns a trucking California and is putting down roots in Nugget as it is a good halfway point between his usual routes. His 66-year old mother just had a stroke and is in recovery. Therefore, Ryder needs someone to take care of his mother, Siobhan “Shiv” Knight, while he is on the road. The perfect candidate is presented to him by a placement agency, but he already has a complicated history with her as it is Joey. With no other better options, Ryder agrees to hire Joey as the live-in caregiver for his mother. The two of them then work to get to know the other as they each have complicated pasts.

I admit that I was not Joey’s biggest fan and did not care a lot about her part of the story during the previous novel. Now that she has her own story, I began to love her and root for everything to work out for her. She is a new resident of Nugget and is just trying to be accepted after the mistakes she made in the past. I loved that the town does not judge her and just wants what is best. Joey still struggles with the new family dynamic now that Brynn and her son Henry are in the picture. The blended family is a difficult concept for her to accept, but she is trying her best to become okay with it. The author wrote her journey very well as it is not perfect and there are a lot of raw emotions that sometimes do not show the best side of someone and it gave a new depth to the story.

The story includes three perspectives as there are Joey and Ryder along with Ryder’s mom. She is going through recovery from her stroke while balancing clinical depression. It was interesting to me as she was written as elderly as I guess I do not think of mid-60s as being too old for some activities. My parents are around the same age and they do everything their children do as we range in age from mid-twenties to early forties. There were times where she was treated as someone in their eighties, but it could just be my interpretation when reading. I did love her as a character, though, and I would be very excited to read more from her if she gets included in a future novel.

Overall, Nugget continues to be a town of healing where there complicated characters that have been through a lot and hopefully find love along the way, whether it be romance, friendship, or themselves. I do not recommend starting this novel at 11 at night when you have to get up at 5 the next morning, as you might do what I did and read it all in one sitting. It was well worth being tired though as it is an incredibly sweet story with great characters. The romance between Ryder and Joey was a great match and I loved the two of them getting to know the other. It did become a little rushed in some moments towards the end, but it was still a great romance where I could picture the two of them lasting as a couple. This was another excellent addition to the Nugget series and I cannot wait to read more!

**I want to give a special thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, Lyrical Press, for a review copy of this very enjoyable novel. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**

This is book 12 in Stacy Finz's Nugget Romance series but the first one I've read.

"One divorce, one mind-blowing kiss with a stranger (code name: Matthew McConaughey), and one year later, Joey Nix desperately needs to find a job in Nugget.

What he discovers just might surprise them both . . "

I'll admit I wasn't sure I'd like this story when I first started reading it but I was wrong. I quickly fell in love with the two main characters Ryder and Joey and the small close knit town setting. Both main characters have complicated personal histories that slowly unfold throughout the story and the way these two flawed characters truly embrace their tragic pasts and find a future with each other really stole my heart. It's also a love story with a lot of steam. I definitely want to pick up the other books in this series now.

Trigger warning - substance abuse, spousal loss, child loss, cancer

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the digital ARC of this book. All opinions remain my own as always.

Nugget #12

Nugget is not a town I came into early in the series. I read book 10, missed eleven and came in again on 12. The book can stand alone but I have a feeling I would have had more information about the main female lead if I had read the previous book.

What I liked:
* The small town feel of the romance
* The love Ryder had for his mother
* The huge effort Joey has put into moving forward with her life
* That Joey was not painted as perfect and that what she had to overcome was not easy for her to do
* The love that Joey felt for her daughter
* The effort made to make the “blended family” element work
* That Ryder and Joey were both a bit broken and their relationship was a bit rocky but did come out okay in the end.
* The way the women in Nugget pulled together and took people in
* How Joey dealt with Shiv’s medical situation
* How Shiv found her purpose
* Peter – would like to find out how he does in Nugget and if he finds a partner
* That it was believable

What I didn’t like:
* Knowing that the medical and psychological issues mentioned in the story are real and create so much upheaval – the upside was that the issues were dealt with in an honest and compassionate way.
* Wondering if I had read the previous book would have given me more insight into both main characters…and wondering what I had missed.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? I think so

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington-Lyrical Shine for the ARC – This is my honest review.

I won a Kindle copy of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway – thanks to Goodreads, the publisher and the author!

This is a poignant romance between two broken souls. Joey and Ryder both have troubled pasts and neither one is looking to start a relationship. But there is some crazy chemistry between them. There are also a lot of interesting secondary characters with their stories, and the charming mountain town of Nugget, California, is a character in itself.

This book is part of a series on Nugget, but can definitely be read on its own. I’m looking forward to reading other books in the series. Highly recommend to Romance fans.

Joey got her story! And it’s quite the ride, too. She’s trying to put her life back together while living in limbo and ends up working for Ryder, the one man who makes her want to risk it all for lust. Or is it love? Not if Ryder has anything to say about it. Of course, he never expected to come face to face with his “I had to have imagined her being that perfect” stranger. And he definitely doesn’t want to want her now, but he’s in a bind and Joey is the only feasible option.

I loved how Joey and Ryder fell for each other, even if one or both fought it many times along the way. And it was very refreshing to see how others react to the proverbial big happy blended family that Joey is on the outside looking in of. While Brynn and Ethan may not have intended to come off as they did, this side of the story shows just how much it can hurt to be treated the way Joey was. But once it all works out, everything manages to seem right just the way it is.

This series just keeps giving me reasons to come back for the next couple and to catch up with those who’ve already had their roads to happy written. And I especially hope to catch up more with Peter, because that character grabbed me the second he was introduced. Anyone who knows good coffee and isn’t afraid to deride the bad is a winner in my eyes!

Reviewed for Romancing the Readers Blog: http://www.romancingthereaders.com/20...

There is a couple of things that an author can do in their books that really excite me. One is where you have a character from prior books and you don't really like them and then they get their own book and you have to learn all about them in a whole different way. Another is when you like a character in a prior book but they piss you off in the next book you read.

Happily for me, both happened in this book. It ended up being an emotional rollercoaster ride for me.

Loved it!

I'm sure after all that you guys want to know what's going on. In the prior book, you meet both Joey and Ryder. I have to say that I really didn't care for Joey in the Choosing You. Most of that was about what she did and her inner thoughts. She really didn't do anything terrible to put you off other than what happened to end her marriage.

In this one, I saw her from let's say the other side and I learn a thing or two. For her daughter's sake, she really changed her life and has learned to think a bit differently. She made some horrible decisions before and paid for them dearly. It took a long hard road for her to pull herself out of the mess she got herself into. I'm happy that she stuck with all she had to do to make things better for herself and her daughter. I'm also happy that she moved her whole life to another town just for that daughter. Shows how much she really loved her.

Right away you know Ryder is a good guy. What takes a bit to learn is that he carries a burden in his heart that is stopping him from moving on in life. He takes a bit to realize what he wants in life and that it's okay for him to love and move on but once he does, the sky is the limit.

One of the things that I really loved is how he stood for Joey and wouldn't let anyone say a harsh thing about her around him. He gets so mad at times that he almost overreacts. That might not always be the best but it's for a good reason. I also like how much he loves his mom and takes care of her. He's a really good guy.

Now for the other thing, I mentioned above about how I could go from liking characters to not. That happened in the book with Ethan and Brynn. I loved them in their book but they got on my nerves in this one. I felt just like Ryder and wanted to slap them. Mostly Ethan.

This is why I love reading series. You never lose touch with the characters and sometimes you even get to see have a breakout of warts. But seeing them in a different light makes for better characters. We all have flaws, no one is perfect and it's good for us to see that with the characters/series we love.

Not to worry you will be so happy by the end of the book. All of it comes together and everyone is off to have a happy life. Sadly not me since this is going to be the last book in the series, or is it? Fingers crossed someone pounds on her creative mind-door.

Holding On by Stacy Finz is another romance taking place in the small town of Nugget. In this story we read the wife's wife of the story of the divorce, which allowed the romance of Ethan and Brynn and Ethan and Joey's daughter, Roni, all of whom we know from a previous book. Joey was ad rug addict. She had fallen and hurt herself and started on legitimate drugs, but like so many, she got hooked. The divorce finally happened when she took her toddler daughter one night to buy drugs and they got carjacked. Ethan had stuck by her even when she had stolen his prescription pad and written out false prescriptions for herself, but endangering their child pushed him a step too far. She has been clean now for two years and has petitioned the state board to reinstate her nursing license. I the meantime she has been working in-home health care jobs. They have all been in Reno, which is over an hour away, but now there is one available in Nugget, so she could be close to her daughter. Ryder Knight is an ex-rodeo start who now runs a rapidly expanding trucking/transport business, and has just purchased some land with a house on it as home base and a place for his mother, who has recently had a stroke and needs 24-hour care. When he opens the door to find Joey there, he is taken aback. He has to hire here. There are no other choices. For his mother.

Ryder and Joey had been eying each other when they had been in the same bar/restaurant in Nugget. Then one night, she walked up to him, pushed him against his truck, grabbed his shirt, and kissed the h**l out of him and then walked away. Then she showed up at his door to apply to be his mother's caregiver. He had not choice, and she was good. He could see she knew what she was doing. His mother liked her. This was a fantastic read, full of twists and turns and situations what made this all impossible. He had been hurt and didn't plan to be hurt again. There was one way to guarantee that: stay away from women. He loved Toni, Joey's daughter, and she loved him. His mom continued to improve; so much she got a part time job and a roommate and moved out. It was all so complicated, until it wasn't. Loved it! Stacy Finz always comes through!

I really liked this. Minor issues. It's a small town series. I've only read two so far and they seem to be pretty cookie cutter as most small town series' are. The towns are always the same. No one needs to walk you to your car because nothing bad ever happens, everyone looks out for each other (in one book it's said the population is almost 6,000 and yes, that's small, but that's hardly small enough to be told that everyone knows everyone), everyone is exceptional in some way (rich, famous, insanely talented, etc). Eye rolling stuff like that. The only people in town who are not nice people are totally two dimensional and used as comic relief (making fun of the way they dress, the way they decorate their business, etc).

So in that regard, yeah, it's an easy, comfortable read that feels pretty much like any other small town romance series. There's a reason these are so popular.

This one was a step above many other though because Joey, the female lead, is a recovering drug addict and the author actually did a really good job of handling that. When she showed up as a side character in the previous book I thought for sure she'd be vilified and was surprised at how she was instead portrayed as an actual human being. A good woman who made mistakes and is fixing her life. So it was really nice to get a whole book with her in it.

Ryder, our male lead, was less interesting though. Unfortunately, his backstory is one that is overused (or maybe I've just somehow run into it too many times). . But as a person, he was decent. There was nothing here that really turned me off.

Overall, a decent romance. I'm going to read the earlier books because I'm in the mood for some easy romance right now.

This is the first of this series I have read so when the book opens with a continuation of an event that ends at the end of the previous book it was a bit confusing and took me a moment to catch up. I’d suggest reading book 11 first, but I caught up and on quickly and truly enjoyed the book. I will be going back to read the series as this one was fabulous and I want to meet everyone else from this adorable small town. The story is multi-themed themed. Romance, redemption, recovery, dealing with the past, lust, loss, love, family drama, starting over, forgiveness, acceptance and moving forward to name a few. Both Ryder and Joey are trying to get through the day and make their lives and those that they love better. Through a twist of fate their paths cross again and it takes some cajoling for then to both emotionally deal with it and figure out what is best for themselves, their families independently and collectively. Small town life, Joey dealing with her history and trying to find her way with her ex-husband, reestablish her relationship with her daughter, get her career back on track, Ryder trying to ignore his emotions while trying to best care for his mother who is recovering (ish) from a serious health issue all make for an emotional read that has left me you awaiting the next in the series because even with all of the tumult in this story, there is of course a wonderful ending to this book. It’s a lovely read that will leave you smiling and glad you got to visit Nugget.

It is rare, I mean so rare I can’t even name one character that started out as the bad guy in a story and became a positive character by the end so that I wanted them to have their own HEA. That is until Joey. Thank you Stacy Finz for giving Joey that in Holding On. While I have never been through anything like Joey, I had total compassion for her and was rooting for her even before I started reading. This was everything I wanted for this character.

Joey has tons of baggage most of it she admits to bringing on herself but don’t think for a moment that Ryder doesn’t have a truck load of his own. In fact, a time or two I just wanted to shake some sense into that man, even his mama couldn’t do that either. A realistic story in which I was glad brilliant surgeon ex-husband didn’t come across as so perfect. I agreed with Ryder on the whole attending the wedding part of the story.

As always by this author a well-written story with complicated relationships and even more complicated people. I now want to know more about Ryder’s brothers, hoping that there could possibly be a story for each of them in the future.

Picking up directly after the end of Choosing You, we are plunged immediately into Ethan's ex-wife Joey's story.

Joey and Ryder Knight enjoyed a passionate kiss at a time when Joey was feeling desperately low. Choosing not to act on it further, we catch up with them a year later when Ryder moves to Nugget. His mother is recovering from a stroke and needs a full-time carer. That's where Joey steps in.

I will hold my hands up, I flip-flopped between feeling really sorry for Joey and disliking her in Choosing You. With much more time devoted to her perspective and her recovery story, I found myself really liking her, and ultimately rooting for her. Having been the ex, forced to attend events for the benefit of my young child, I really empathised with Joey on so many occasions. The chemistry between her and Ryder was just as tangible as in Choosing You and the intimate scenes did not disappoint.

I really loved the third POV in this story, which came from Ryder's mum. Having now read two of Stacy's 'Nugget' series, I assume that the third POV is a regular occurrence. There's a warmth and depth to the story with each secondary character treated with care. Again, even if you haven't read previous stories, you can pick this up and not feel that you're missing parts of the story.

Overall Rating: ❤❤❤❤❤

Nugget reminds me of growing up in a small town!

Former rodeo champion Ryder Knight (I’m a child of the 80’s, it made me laugh) needs a live-in caregiver for his mom after she had a stroke while he’s on the road with his trucking business. The only full-time candidate for the position is Joey Nix who he couldn’t get out of head after she kissed him.

Joey needs a job near Nugget, California so she can hopefully spend time with her daughter Roni. Joey had hit rock bottom when she lost her nursing license so getting a live-in care position would keep her close to Nugget while she waits to find out about her license.

I’m happy that Joey has found her happily ever after because she took responsibility for the problems she caused when she was married to Ethan.

This series reminds me so much of growing up in a small town!

It is funny because I really did not like Joey from the previous book but I quickly changed my mind in this book.. She owned up to her past, her mistakes, and proved she was a good mother.

I really liked Ryder and how he was looking out for his single mom who had just had a stroke. It was funny how Joey and Ryder first met and how circumstances kept bringing them together, although Ryder was not too happy about that.

The characters pulled me right into this story and I liked returning to the small town of Nugget. I was so glad Joey and Ryder found their happy ever after because they both deserved it. I really liked the last line in the book too. I also liked how Joey's ex-husband treated her and what he said to her at the end. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

Holding On is the 12th book in Stacy Finz’s Nugget series based in an imaginary small Northern California town named Nugget. As with all the other books in this series it can be read as a standalone. The author actually does a very good job of providing Joey’s background as well as several other character from previous books in this series she re-introduces into this book. But in this instance I would say you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t read the 11th book Choosing You, before you read this one. I say that because the female lead in this story Joey Nix was such a prominent character in the previous book she might as well be considered a main character. Joey was an orthopedic nurse married to Ethan Daniels a renowned pediatric orthopedic surgeon. Together they had a young daughter Veronica or Roni. Joey incurred a back injury at work and became heavily addicted to opioids during her recovery. Her addiction cost her her marriage, custody of her child and her nursing license. Now a recovering addict clean for almost two years, Joey spends most of Choosing You trying to convince her ex-husband to take her back and put their family back together again. By the end of that book she realizes that whatever romantic love she and Ethan once shared is gone. The truth is their marriage had long been in trouble before she became addicted to opioids, betrayed his trust threatening his career and their daughter’s life. She loves Ethan but is no longer in love with him. It’s time for her to move on with her life. Joey as the title implies is holding on, trying to get her life back together. Trying to find a job that will allow her to live in Nugget so she can be close to Roni and spend more time with her. She’s holding on to the slim hope that she’ll get her nursing license back which will allow her to do both. On her visits to Nugget to spend time with her daughter Joey frequently stops for coffee at the Ponderosa the town’s only real restaurant and often runs into and flirts with Ryder Knight a handsome trucker who reminds her of Matthew McConaughey. This story picks up at the point of Choosing You where Joey has realized she and Ethan aren’t right for each other and are never going to get back together. Heading back to her home in Reno she stops for coffee and sees Ryder again, walks up to him and kisses him leaving them both reeling from their physical chemistry.
Ryder Knight two time bronco riding world rodeo champion is also hanging on. His wife Leslie, his high school sweetheart died in a car accident while 7 months pregnant with their first child. Ryder is holding on to misplaced guilt and pain convinced he’ll never love again because he doesn’t deserve to be loved and can’t bear the pain of loving and losing someone again. Ryder’s mom Siobhan or Shiv is recovering from a serious stroke. She’s being released from her rehab facility. He’s purchased a house he wants her to live in until she’s finished her recovery and needs a full time caregiver to help take care of her. Enter Joey. Joey having been a nurse practioner before she lost her nursing license has outstanding qualifications for the job but Ryder feels their kiss and his attraction to her will threaten his determination to remain aloof and free of emotional entanglements. But when Joey becomes his only option he agrees to hire her on a temporary basis. Joey realizes Ryder was reluctant to hire her because of their kiss but she too is desperate to find a job that will allow her to live in Nugget. She’s determined to prove she can put their kiss behind them and be the perfect health aide for Shiv.
Complicating this is Joey’s ex Ethan is about to marry his fiancée Brynn and has asked her to attend the wedding to show Roni they are one big happy family. The thing I think that really elevates this story is Joey’s emotions around Ethan and Brynn and their upcoming nuptials. Joey’s a good person but she’s also human. Although she’s not in love with Ethan anymore she does love him as a friend and regrets how she destroyed their marriage and she does feel some jealousy over Brynn replacing her in his life. She knows Brynn is really a good person but she resents the fact that Brynn spends more time with Roni and has the money to provide anything Roni could want while Joey doesn’t even have a home with two bedrooms that would allow her to keep Roni overnight. You could literally feel Joey’s pain as she watched her daughter take her first plane flight without her to join her father and his new wife in Hawaii where she’ll celebrate her birthday. The last thing she wants to do is attend her ex-husbands wedding watching him step into his new wonderful life with his beautiful, perfect new wife whom everyone in Nugget seems to love while she feels stuck in her own life unable to move forward without her nursing license. I also like the way Finz had other people in Joey’s life point out to her that they felt it was very unfair or even cruel of Ethan to ask her to attend his wedding. I can see both Ethan’s point of view and those who felt expecting Joey to attend his wedding was just cruel.
Adding depth to this story was Siobhan’s emotional struggles with her retirement and then her stroke. In her mid-sixties she’s also barely holding on feeling like she doesn’t have any purpose anymore and is just a burden to Ryder. She’s also broken hearted after loving a man she can never have for most of her life. Also, there’s Ryder’s relationship with his estranged father Tanner who abandoned him and Shiva when he was just a kid. Tanner has tried to reconnect with Ryder but Ryder rebuffs every attempt.
I have to say while I’ve enjoyed every book in this series I think Finz hit one out of the park with this one.

3 stars. To be honest, Joey was not my favorite character. Nor was Ryder. So it took me awhile to get into this book. I did like Siobhan (Shiv) a lot. I found the stroke component of the book interesting, since almost 2 years ago; I had a stroke. I also enjoyed the character of Peter., although he was written way too stereotypically, which is surprising since Ms. Finz has written gay characters before. Overall, i enjoyed the book and found the ending satisfying. I wish I would have enjoyed the book more than I did, but it was no fault of the author I hope there will be more Nugget books sometime in the future,

What an awesome second chance story!! A second chance at life, love, and parenting. Joey has a screwed up past and has worked extremely hard to get back on her feet and put her daughter first when she meets Ryder again only this time to be working for him and his mother. Sparks fly and these two set the pages on fire. Want to know what I am talking about? Read Holding On and find out!! I will forever miss the town of Nugget since this is the last book in the series but I will read them all over again and again. Thanks for amazing stories, characters, and love!!

An endearing romance. I wanted a happily ever after for many characters, not just the main couple involved. This was my first visit to Nugget, California, and I certainly hope it is not my last as there are many stories previous to this one to enjoy. I would have been happier without the intimate details, but those were easy skipped over to enjoy the heart-warming tales of past and present issues. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley.

Another visit to Nugget

Since the very beginning, the town of Nugget and its inhabitants, new and old, have captivated my imagination and heart. The people are complicated and quirky, and make me want to live in a town like Nugget. I like the author's style, and I look forward to her next book.

A beautiful love story about two broken souls finding happiness again, about friendship, family and risking your heart, even if it can be broken again, but it is worth to fully enjoy life. You will fall in love with Joey, Ryder and everybody in Nugget.

Another great visit to Nugget

I have thoroughly enjoyed all the books in this series. This was another good one with characters I liked and a chance to revisit characters from past books. It looks like this might be the last in the series and that makes me sad. I’ll miss Nugget!

Holding On was a good book. I really liked Ryder, and I'm glad Joey didn't give up on him for being emotionally unavailable. She was his perfect match and was also great with his mom, Shiv. I enjoyed reading about the friendship that developed between Joey, Shiv and Peter, the fun and lovable caregiver who filled in when Joey had time off. I look forward to my next visit to Nugget, CA.

I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary Advance Reader Copy from NetGalley.
