I saved Secret, but it turns out my troubles are only beginning.
Every moment is a struggle between the human and the beast. Wolf-me cares nothing for schedules, social niceties, or the importance of hiding. Territory is to be taken and protected. Pack is to be expanded. But I don’t want to give up being a paramedic to howl in the woods. I have to find a middle ground. Too bad magic isn’t going to give me the chance. No matter how monstrous I am, something far worse is coming. A rot is spreading up from the Underworld and bringing a terrifying new sickness into the city. I have to find a way to cut it out before the entire city becomes a mushroom ridden graveyard.
Daniel Potter has always been inspired by the mysteries of the world. His early interest lead him to become avid researcher as well as gamer and writer. After obtaining his PhD in vascular biology, he began exploring fictional magic and spiritualism using his own particular scientific lense. Daniel published the webcomic Walking the Lethe from 2010-2012 and is an active member of the East Bay Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Meet-up group. His debut novel, Off Leash, is just the first in his Freelance Familiar series. When he's not chasing his imagination, Daniel works as a vascular biologist in the Bay Area. He shares an apartment with his wife, two cats, and a large collection of video games.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring by more than 0.50 of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
DNF at 54 pages in.
Second book in this series that I've read. The first I rated 3.25 and had had a spate of 'bad' new to me authors, so thought I'd go back to an author I liked. I'd stupidly hoped to enjoy book 2 even more, so of course it was IMHO worse.
I really dislike Cindy, who should understand that transitioning is hard, especially that unlike her, the MC didn't feel trapped in the wrong body. She didn't ask to be turned into a werewolf and share her brain with another living creature! MC is a doormat, who lets people walk over her when its perfectly allowed for her to put her own interests first and move out.
First time read the author's work?: No
Will you be reading more?: No
Would you recommend?: No
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Just like the first book I also really loved this book. Here we have Abigail Night, the protagonist from the first book returning with new problems afoot. She now has to fight an unknown plague of some sort which she ultimately finds out to be part of the issue of magical rifts opening up again. On top of this, she has to learn how to live with her being a werewolf. As there's this struggle between human her and wolf her. While they are one of the same upon the agreement they aren't always agreeable at first causing a number of things to go wrong. Ultimately though, they both come to an agreement and help stop a plague bringing the dead back to life. She discovers Andrew Millar and an old billionaire dying from cancer are behind the newfound plague. Fighting him she nearly dies but manages to survive saving Portland. On top of this, she's much more in agreement with her werewolf self.
Now some of the issues I had about the book was when it was introduced that not only did our paramedic have a wolfman (or in her case wolfwoman) form she also had a wolf form. This threw me for a loop since when I was reading it I had a hard time understanding that Abigail was actually using a wolf form and wolfwoman form interchangeably. The writing didn't really make it all that clear. It felt a bit muddled and confusing.
Overall, I really liked this book and would definitely recommend it.

"“She who has walked among the dead. She who bears the scars of Luna’s teeth. She who loves a child of the Dream.” As I spoke, the night drank my words; my keen ears heard the trees groan softly, the grass rustle, and the stones in the wall that ringed the cemetery shifting as the world itself listened." - Abigail Night
They wanted a monster to fight... They got more...
"I dove into the abyss." - Abigail
Another hang on tight, things are about to get real tale that will give you whiplash! Action packed from start to finish!
This is a pretty big book compared to what I’ve gotten used to lately. So be prepared to invest some time immersing yourself in Abby’s world. There were a lot of different things going on, and at first, I didn’t see how they would all pull together. But they do. And they all make this particular adventure for Abby and her “pack” all the more colorful. I was quickly swept up and carried away by this story. I’m not quite sure what the author has in store for these characters, but I’m very curious to find out.
This is what and how I aspire to write and create. Again, I can't put into words how much the second book has touched me; as much as if not greater than the first! Very few stories and series have resonated so deeply within me and the fact that this one has, was, and is a pleasantly welcome surprise. The major reason is that the characters, main and minor, are fantastically written. Like, a chef's kiss level of greatness! The thrilling and engaging plot adds to that! I need to know what happens next!
If you enjoy anything remotely futuristic with a touch of post apocalyptic feel then the added bonus of paranormal will send you over the moon here. This is a blend of many genres and cultural beliefs that is both unique and awe inspiring. There is an edgy feel to some of the action but the main characters and many of the supporting characters have enough grit to carry them through. Definitely worth the purchase!
Abby, Cliff, Rey, Secret, Cindy and Victoria are back. I like that though this story picks up shortly after the first it neither buried itself in that book nor ignored the book for it's own story, there's a balance. More supernatural evil has come to Portland Oregon and Abby is there to face it with her ragtag "pack".
I'm intrigued to see how the events unfolding in the last few chapters will effect book three
Full moon medic, is one of the best werewolf storylines. That I have read in some time. It's also one of the most unique version too. As the story definitely it's own thing. That is distinct from most other werewolf genre. I can't wait to read book three of this series.
Absolutely excellent novel. Kept a good pace, and some tense action that kept it flowing nicely. Abby was, as always, a great character and had some really nice growth. We learn a little more about Secret, and a surprise twist about someone else late. Well worth the read and purchase.
The story is fresh in each book. And that new and interesting secrets are revealed as we go through the adventues. Also that it moves forward with a little foreshadowing towards future events of the next book. And of course harrowing, bloodcurding frights but heroes to end.
How do you know the author is male? His insane focus on just how naked the characters are after shifting, and how their boobs behave while naked. I mean, it's okay to let us know that, yes, after a shift the werewolf is naked, but I don't need the remainder every time. I mean, I have read more than a few books with shifters, and there's always a reference to them being naked in the instances where they don't shift their clothes, but it's never as repetitive as in this book. It's interesting to see what's going on in the world, but some of the things that happened were a little too predictable and some things were just weird. I still don't know how all the characters fit together, but I finally see a little of where everything is going, I'm just not sure if it's going in the direction I expected it to go when I first started reading. It's getting a little too messy.
Read the first book and had to preorder this one, then it arrived and had to read it right away. I was not disappointed. Very fun characters and lots of action with a really good storyline I recommend this book and series.
I really enjoy reading about Abby, Secret (who should get more story time), and finally happy to see Abby get a pack. To DP, give me more and soon! Keep writing!
Abby and her friends are in for a hell of a fight! Andrew a billionaire wants Victoria to make him immortal. Others are hunting the werewolf. Hold on to your set for a wild ride!
I know, so far only two books but they were awesome. This book had it all, an over the top bad guy with lots of wretched bad guys. Throw in our hero and her merry band of helpers and you have an excellent story!!!!!
I am not a big fan of Z’s. But I loved this book I can’t wait to read the third book. I live this series so much, am sad have to wait to read the next one.
