As defined by the American Psychological Association (APA), empaths possess the ability to comprehend and vicariously experience another person’s emotions and point of view. Empaths have a different way of looking at the world as they can effortlessly tune in to the feelings of others – both the good and the bad. While they may be considered delicate and weak, empaths can learn techniques that will help them go beyond survival and lead abundant lives.

How to INSTANTLY recognize that you have the rare gift of empathy and utilize it in ways that few people know. The most effective ways to create an emotional force field and protect yourself (hint: you need to avoid certain types of people like the plague). The five worst self-damaging habits that empaths need to overcome IMMEDIATELY. Why being an empath is akin to having a superpower (and how to harness this ability to manifest success). Alright. I think it lacks a bit of consistency. I am not an empath but I am a highly sensitive person and I get the impression that some points are treated a little lightly or perhaps in an unprofessional way. I suppose there will be many people who feel identified and maybe it will help them.
As far as I can tell, this was a self-published book, and seems to be based at least in part on the author's own experience. It didn't help that a quick Google search didn't turn up anything about the author.
While that doesn't mean the book is necessarily factually wrong or lacks value, it does make me skeptical, particularly when it comes to psychological subjects. Having finished the book, it seemed okay, but not particularly great, and likely would have benefitted from another round of edits or two. (And there was strange, long tangent into the enneagram at the end, which seemed out of place.)
Given that there are at least a dozen books on surviving as an empath on Goodreads, all with more readers / higher ratings, I wouldn't recommend this.
Well hello there incredibly affirming, comforting, and encouraging little audiobook! I randomly found this quick (less than 3 hour) audiobook on hoopla while browsing and I am so thankful I decided to listen to it. Basically, it's a guide to unlocking the potential and realizing the power of empaths, mixed in with scientific research and ACTUALLY practical mental health advice. The narrator's voice was relaxing, almost like a meditation leader. I feel like I could reread this book again whenever I needed an inspiration.
This was interesting. After learning the definition of an empath in this book, I would not consider myself one. But that doesn't mean I did not gain anything from this read. I really valued the part of the book that discusses the types of narcissists out there, what makes them attracted to empaths, and how to not make yourself a target. It was very clear-cut and understandable and I for one was taking a heck of a lot of notes on that section. I also loved the part of the book that discussed healing and positive affirmations.
I love all things self-care so I made sure to write down my favorite one:
"Today I attract blessings and positive energies my way. I reject anything that would infect my world with negativity. My life is beautiful, my experiences are beautiful, my love is beautiful." So lovely☺️.
The writing was a little too mechanical for my taste and I wished that the book talked more about protecting oneself from toxic people (as stated in the title) instead of just 2 chapters on it--There are 11 chapters in total! The book spent most of its time discussing the traits of an empath and whether you are one or not.
This book wasn’t too bad, but I don’t think it’s a comprehensive view of the empath experience. Good introduction, a lot of good points, but missed the mark a bit.
A decent start into understanding a highly sensitive/empathic person. Would be helpful for a quick read if you’re wondering about yourself or someone close to you. Not super in depth as I had hoped.
