The Big Mistake

Rate this book
Is pursuing her dream career really all that’s important, or is Stella about to make the biggest mistake of her life?

Savvy, experienced network reporter Stella Reynolds, used to covering one crisis after another, finally lands a plum assignment to interview a celebrity movie star and emcee a charity gala for Lucky, her racecar driver boyfriend. But within an hour of touching down in Chicago, the A-lister’s a no-show, Stella’s mom calls to demand that she check in on Fran, the granddaughter of an old family friend, and then a tragic school shooting breaks just down the road.

Stella rushes to cover the crime, and it’s a doozy. Police are baffled, how did the gunman escape? Stella’s overbearing boss won’t stop hounding her to scoop the competition, and she digs in, looking for answers.

A local reporter bent on beating Stella complicates things, and the police chief in charge of the investigation doesn’t trust anyone in the media. But Stella’s boss is adamant; find a new angle or find a new job.

When it’s clear that the Hollywood star, Fran, and the shooting aren’t nearly as unrelated as it initially appeared, Stella’s only thoughts turn toward unmasking the gunman. Her job depends on it, and so do countless lives. But will her laser-like focus derail her relationship with Lucky? How many times can she put her job first, knowing that eventually, she’ll have pushed everything and everyone in her life off to the side one too many times?

The Big Mistake is the sixth book in the Stella Reynolds Mystery Series, but can be read as a standalone novel.

Stella is in Chicago to interview Sophia Thomas, a Hollywood celebrity. Sophia is also scheduled to headline a Charity event that Stella's boyfriend, Lucky Haskins is hosting. Unfortunately, Sophia never shows up for the interview. While waiting for the celebrity, Stella gets a call from her boss, Kenny, telling her about a shooting at a nearby high school. Several students were wounded, but none were seriously hurt. Nobody knows how the shooter escaped from the school without being seen. A short time later, a worker at the Dempster Stop N Shop, a convenience store a few miles from the school, was shot.

To add to Stella's confusion, she gets a call from her mother asking her to check on Fran Miller, the granddaughter of an old family friend. Fran is upset and has concerns about her roommate. Stella suggests she get professional help. When Fran is seen in the back seat of a police car, a local reporter automatically presumes she was arrested as the shooter. Stella contacts Chief Sterling of the Rivermoor Police to get the truth.

Why did Sophia Thomas miss her interview? Are the school and store shootings related? Did the same person commit both crimes? How did the shooter escape from the school? Was Fran actually arrested? Did she commit a crime? Can Stella unravel the mystery? What will happen to Lucky's Charity event?

Libby Kirsch has another winner with the latest Stella Reynolds adventure. The characters and situations are complex while still remaining very realistic. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing clear to the end.

It's been quite a while since a book in this series has been released. It was worth the wait. The characters are multifaceted and the story is well written. The mystery is complex with a variety of components to hold the readers interest. A very satisfying read.

Stella is in Chicago on assignment and spending time with her love race track star Lucky. A shooting at the local high school changes the direction of Stellas assignment and pits her against a killer trying to protect their secret.

I received an arc of this book and voluntarily provided a review.

Each book in this series gets better and better. The book is full of twists and turns. This time Stella is in Chicago to emcee Lucky's event when a news story breaks.

Great series, but best to read from the first book. Also highly recommend the other series featuring Stella's old friend, Janet Black.

Received an advanced copy; however, the review is my own opinion.

I received this book as an ARC and am so glad I did. I enjoyed this book immensely. It has everything...great characters, romance, humour and loads of drama. I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. I couldn’t put it down! If you haven’t read it yet, what are you waiting for? I highly recommend this book.
