Audrey Smart, 34, has made a major life change, walking away from her life as a vet (and from a string of failed romances) and moving to Sicily to buy a $1 home—and embark on a mandatory renovation she knows nothing about. She finds herself busy running the town’s new shelter, while also renovating her own problematic home—and dating again.

Audrey’s love life is heating up, and when his prominent Sicilian family invites Audrey to a family feast in Palermo, it’s an offer she can’t refuse. It’s everything she needs: new friends, a huge, new family, and food to die for.

But la dolce vita isn’t what it seems. When Audrey overhears word of a looming mafia vengeance hit, the only person pleading for the life of the innocent target is her. With just a few days to prove they have the wrong man, can Audrey assuage their anger and discover who really killed the mafiosi?

Finding herself in the middle of two rival mafia families, Audrey can’t help but wonder: is she in way over her head?

A laugh-out-loud cozy packed with mystery, intrigue, renovation, animals, food, wine—and of course, love—A VILLA IN SICILY will capture your heart and keep you glued to the very last page.

This is part of one of three series I am reading by the same author. They all have a a woman who is starting over in a new place with a new business. The woman is also trying to find her father who left her family when she was young. And there is usually a pet involved. And then there's a murder and the heroine is under suspicion so she investigates on her own. There are also multiple love interests she is trying to decide between. This one is set in a small town in Sicily, and the main character is a veterinarian who is remodeling a house she bought for a dollar. They're all pretty much of a piece, and yet I keep reading them to see what happens to the heroine and if she ever finds her father.

Audrey rubs elbows with the mob in this installment of A Cats and Dogs cozy! Invited for a weekend party at the family home of her new friend, Rafael. Past dealings with the "family" have informed the vet that she is walking into what could be a very interesting few days. As we know it will, murder enters into the mix and while most of the partygoers are sure that the culprit is a rival mafia family, Audrey somehow manages to convince Rafael's father, the Don, to let her investigate before they take drastic measures. An incredibly annoying cousin from NJ, with the potential for a very loose temper at the worst instances, is added to the character list. I hope she stays away, LOL!!

I would suggest NOT listening to the audiobook. The reader has a nice voice except when she is trying to speak with a Southern, Italian, New Jersey accent. I often listen to a book to fall asleep. But the voices are irritating. Too predictable. And the story line is often ridiculous.

A Villa in Sicily: Cannoli and a Casualty(A Cats and Dogs Mystery #6) — Fiona Grace/Narrator: Sarah Kempton (15 chapters) July 28, 2024

Oh man, was this a great listen! I tell you…. I will download this whole series and have a marathon read when I finish the last book. This plot had everything. It is her best book in the series by far and I’m glad I kept with it.

Audrey decides to go to Raphel’s family function, and she wonders if she will finally take the next step. I thought she was torn because she really liked the cute Southern contractor dude, too. He is barely in this story, but he’s there when it’s necessary.

Once she gets to the party, she meets a cousin of Raphel, who is a New Jersey girl, and they hit it right off. When the girl’s boyfriend is offed, Audrey knows she must find the killer….

I think this may be my last audiobook in this series, so I am going to track down the ebook to read the next book in the series.

Narrator review: A very good narrator, with all the accents correctly spoken.

AFTER REVIEW NOTE: This series seems to conclude with this book, although there are two more listed. They were to originally be released in March and April 2022, and the titles are out there on the internet, but sadly, they were never released.

I really like this series, and I hope that the author will resume writing at leas the next two. This is by far my favorite series they have written.

Five stars.

I enjoyed this book, even if once more Audrey foolishly confronts a killer in an isolated place and shouts, "You killed him". Incredibly stupid.

Even though Mason warns her to steer clear of her new mafia friends, Audrey goes with Raphael to a large family gathering in Corleone. While they are enjoying a happy and noisy feast, two men who have been shot arrive on the scene and one dies in front of Audrey saying, "Fiori" (flowers). It does not seem to occur to Audrey to share this important information.

Audrey is confused as to why Raphael does not kiss her or show any physical interest in her. It should have come to her as no surprise that he is gay and only took her to hid father's reunion as a cover.

Thirty four year-old Audrey Smart has reached an important milestone in her life. She left a practice in Boston and now owns an Italian villa in Musomelli, Sicily and is the town’s sole veterinarian. She’s met a few locals including Rafaelle Piccolo, the son of a mafia boss from nearby Corleone. She treats him at arm’s length given his association with organized crime. When he invites her to Corleone for a family gathering she is very hesitant to go and equally hesitant to say no to a Sicilian mob boss’s son. She opts to go unsuspecting that by the weekend’s end she will be involved in a Mafia killing. She must do something to prevent a Mafia war from erupting and leave town before everything blows up.

I have loved the other books in this series, but this just didn't cut it for me. The main story is out of the village, and our heroine is not looking after animals and running the vet clinic. Also, I found another main character to be unbelievable after what happened to her. (No spoilers) But the mystery itself was well-written. I was sure I knew who dunnit, but was totally wrong. I'm looking forward to the next book, and hoping it gets back on track.

Audrey Saves the Day

Finally, Audrey is getting a bit smarter in her investigations and in her personal life. An exciting weekend with Rafael’s family, another murder, of course, and a couple of surprises at the end, make this one of Fiona’s better efforts.

This series is pure fluff and fantasy. A host of American and Italian stereotypes. The plot is ridiculous, however, if you can suspend disbelief and don't take any of it seriously it is a light escapist fluffy read.

This book was the last in this series and it did not disappoint. The book had lots of twists and turns and finally a conclusion to Audrey's love life dilemma!

How could you have Sicilian mysteries without mention of the Mafia... Well... More than mention I guess.... Hey, this time Audrey wasn't even a suspect, so a few twists!

The narration was not good, the American was British, the American cousin from NJ did not sound like that at all, but the story was great so I kept listening.

This entire series was fun (and pretty "fluffy"), but the last two (5 and 6) were particularly enjoyable. They are stand-alone books, but definitely can be read as a two-part series.

A fun cozy mystery with an American vet in Sicily among the crazy mafia clan. I'll keep on reading them as a love interest surfaces.
