Never Just Friends #3

Getting Friendly

Rate this book
LEON

When I’m looking for a hook up, I want three things:

Big, thick, and rough.

So it doesn’t make sense that I can't get my new hire out of my head.

He's a tiny guy with big ideas ... and he's my apprentice which means he's completely off limits.

But he’s already under my skin.

And for the first time with any guy, I don’t think I can hold my own against him.

Physically, yes. Emotionally, no.

Auggie makes me weak.

AUGGIE

Growing up, I always wanted to go into the family business and follow in Dad’s footsteps.

Until in my senior year of high school when he told me to find a new dream.

No one would let a small, clumsy guy like me on a construction site.

And after trying and failing for years, I was starting to believe him.

Then LJ Constructions calls me for an interview and when I meet Leon, he becomes my new dream.

He's hot as hell, self made, and instead of putting me down, he sees what I’ve always seen in myself.

But I’m not dumb enough to throw away this one chance, not even for him.

Not even if I really, really want to.

Getting Friendly is a low angst friends-to-lovers romance with spa dates, a size difference, and an adorably awkward MC.

all those other times i said i was burnt out from romance, clearly i didn't mean it. but this time i think i do because i’m officially going to read something else that isn't romance, unoriginal, cliche, underdeveloped, and generic. when i was around 7, i started my own tales of "once upon a time." i've always been a romance girly. and yes, a vanilla one at that. i've been reading romance since i found wattpad when i was like, 10 years old. i read fanfics. i even started my own. i'm 23 now. i feel confined. i need more diversity.

in my bio, i have "romance reader". romance reader? i don't know her anymore. i'm leaving her behind. she's gonna evolve and expand.

it was nice while it lasted.

and i'm still gonna read romance, just not 24/7 like i currently do. more like, i’m gonna take breaks in between, and read different genres in between. mix it up a bit. maybe i can go a week or two more without a single romance book, but there will come a day where i miss it, so i’ll go back to it. the way i see it, is that once i miss it after not reading it for a while, i might even enjoy it more because to me, it will feel either new, or like it’s something useful to unwind, or it’ll be easy to get through compared to other literary complex stories. it has nothing to do with new releases, considering the old books don't work either, and i'm gonna get to the ones i do wanna read at some point. it's just...no longer calling my name and keeping my attention like before. it's so lame now, as if i just cannot find anything new and worth gushing about. whether fluff or angst, whether toxic or healthy, whether complex and questionable or realistic and simple, i'm tired. even if it has some unique traits, it’s the same old same old in some way. characters, rep, awakenings, sex, third act conflict, descriptions, plots, storylines, drama, side characters—there’s no excitement.

so yeah, i’ll still read it. there’s a shit load of romance books i still wanna read (especially gay romances because that’s still the type of romance i read the most) but i’m gonna tone it down a bit.

as for this book, terrible. lack of chemistry, unmemorable characters, lame execution. auggie, especially was not a fun character. he’s 21, so yeah he’s young, but sometimes he acted younger. he made me cringe sometimes. as for leon, he wasn’t anything special either. the romance felt more physical than anything else, no surprise there.

Getting Friendly is a light, beautiful and super fun strangers-to-friends-to-lovers romance between the prince Leon and the adorably awkward Auggie. I had such a great time reading this book that when I finish this review I’m going to reread it all over again. Yes, I’m fangirling, I apologize in advance but I loved this one.

Leon needs help: his construction business is going great and his crew is not enough anymore. But when the guy with the impeccable resumé arrives, he’s a small thing, clumsy and with the face of a kid, even though he’s only three years younger. As much as Leon hates saying no, he doesn't want Auggie to get hurt.

It's done. Auggie has just destroyed his last opportunity to work in his dream job. But after crossing paths with Leon in a gay bar and talk with him, Leon decides Auggie might not be as bad as he thought and decides to hire him as his apprentice.

Now, Auggie is off limits. Too bad Leon can’t stop thinking about him.

“Come, I’ll feed you. We can talk over breakfast.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I can’t. I already have plans to go and die of mortification.”

“I’m sure you’ll manage to reschedule that.”

Leon is the kind of boyfriend everyone wants: inside his big, tough body lives the softies of the hearts, a heart that has never fallen in love before -but that’s going to change soon. Even though he always goes for big, rough guys like him, there is something about Auggie that makes Leon want to kiss him… among other things.

“If I’m giving up a whole day of work, you’d better make sure I’m really fucking relaxed by the end of it.”

I lick my lips, thinking of one way I could definitely relax Leon, but then I remind myself I’m not supposed to be picturing him that way.

This is going to take some practice.”

Auggie is a beautiful, awkward, charming guy who has stolen my heart and earned a place as a new favourite character. He’s clumsy, awful at talking with people, always gets nervous and starts to ramble, and he’s hilarious! I laughed so much while I was reading his POV. I love the way he deals with life, his humour when things don’t go well -which tends to happen-, his commitment with his job. Auggie has a crush on Leon since the beginning and he’s soooo cute!! Okay, I’ll stop fangirling, but this book is worth a try only for Auggie, it’s impossible not to love him.

Leon is shirtless again. Little builder shorts and too belt and big heavy boots, and absolutely no shirt to cover his thick chest to distract me from ogling him.

He’s so dreamy….

And also my boss.

“So, what’s the agenda today, El Capitano?” For some reason, I swing my arm like a sailor, and immediately hate myself and my life and this whole day.

What the actual fuck is wrong with me?

Overall, Getting Friendly is the perfect read if you want a fun, quick and cute romance that will make you laugh out loud. These two are great together, you'll have a smile imprinted in your face during the whole story!

*sigh* This series has been such a complete waste of my time.. I should have called it quits after the first book, but for some reason I had faith it would get better.
I especially had high hopes for this book. The premise sounded fun and the characters seemed like they'd have a great dynamic together.

And, okay, this wasn't an awful book. It really wasn't. It just wasn't anything I found myself care about much. It simply wasn't interesting in the slightest: it was all kind of dry and never reached any kind of depth. Everything remained completely surface level.

I liked both of these main characters. Leon was sweet and Auggie was cute.
I love the grumpy/sunshine trope, and I also love awkward main characters. This book has both.. sort of?
I mean, I can see that that was at least what this book was going for, but I don't think it was ever truly fleshed out. Leon was nowhere near what I'd call grumpy, and was actually kind of a sunshine character himself as well. And Auggie was awkward, yes, but I didn't truly feel his awkwardness if that makes any sense. It was all kind of lacklustre, and could have been executed far better.

The plot was also incredibly unrealistic and did not make a whole lot of sense.
A few examples (although there's plenty more):
-Auggie being hired by Leon was just odd and out-of-character, thus the whole set-up of their relationship should realistically never have happened.
-Leon randomly deciding in the blink of an eye that he does want to have sex with Auggie, and immediately whipping out his dick as a result? Like I genuinely felt like I was missing a few steps there, as Leon was so adamant about not starting anything with him before that point. Super random.
-Auggie's dad going from telling Leon he should never hire Auggie because he can't do anything right and fucks everything up, to him accusing Leon he is taking advantage of Auggie being his apprentice because his son is just too damn good for a low position like that???? Huh???? Sir, which is it?? Is he a disaster at work or is he some sort of prodigy? Make up your damn mind, book!!!

Anyyyyway, long story short, I didn't dislike the characters, but I did think their dynamic was a perfect example of failed potential, and I was also never really felt their chemistry.
It was all kind of flat, and I hardly cared about anything that happened.

I am disappointed by this author to say the least.

I loved the dynamic between Auggie and Leon. Auggie was so adorable with his awkwardness and verbal word explosions. Leon liked quiet until Auggie came along.

But Auggie is Leon's employee, and dependable, overworked Leon doesn't blur lines. Not until he makes an exception for Auggie that is.

I enjoyed this highly readable, low angst, sexy story!

If you're in the mood for a huge dose of cute with barely any angst, then Getting Friendly is the book for you. It's a standalone in the #neverjustfriends series by Saxon James, although you may want to read the two previous books, Just Friends and Fake Friends first for context, as some of those characters make an appearance 🧡.

In a nutshell, this is a boss/employee, friends-to-lovers, big/little, medium steam 🔥 gem, and what's not to love about the two MCs, Leon and Auggie?! 💕

It's a quick and easy read and will leave you with a smile on your dial 😍.

Recommended in this genre ✨✨✨✨.

Second read, 23 Aug 2021: I honestly just love these two so much.

-

First read, 25 May 2021: I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I absolutely loved Auggie. This was cute, funny and steamy with minimal angst and I just didn’t want it to end. I felt like the climax to the story wasn’t that big (unlike the other kinds of climax in this story hehe) but it was satisfying.

Saxon James is becoming an auto-buy for me and I just love her writing so much.

I expected to like this, but I’m surprisingly touched. Auggie is a particularly memorable character, and he and Leon are fantastic together. Very warm, sweet, and dirty in the best way.

No, really. This a rare gem that is both heartwarming and incredibly, unapologetically erotic.

Yes, this is part of a series, but it’s easy to enjoy as a stand-alone if desired.

A perfect read if you’re in the mood for a low-angst, opposites-attract romance with a touch of hurt/comfort, underdog empowerment, and sex so good you won’t be able to read it in public.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️/5
Format: audiobook
Narration: 🎤🎤🎤/5

This started out really strong and I enjoyed the premise, but then the relationship randomly moved way too fast as the initial chemistry kind of fizzled out.

I enjoyed both main characters, they were genuine and super likable. I also really liked the opposites attract aspects. And kind of the fact that Auggie wasn’t really Leon’s type but their emotional connection was stronger than that detail.

Also really liked the plot line and how Leon had Auggie’s back when it came to his dad. And really just how he believed in him and supported him even though he was clumsy and made a lot of mistakes. They were just very sweet.

Once the physical part of their relationship started, I just think everything started moving way too quickly. When they were professing love, I was kind of confused. But other than that, I really liked the buildup we got before that part.

I’m excited to finally get Rafe’s story. He’s been the most talked about character in all the other books of this series and I really hope his book lives up to the hype it’s been giving off.

I loved this one! Auggie is charmingly disarming and sweetly vulnerable and I adored him from the start and I loved that Leon didn’t fight his attraction to him even though he wasn’t his “usual type”. The pining was lovely and the buildup was great. I loved their banter and Auggie’s snark and dry, self-deprecating humor was amusing. I loved their dynamic. Too cute. Loved it.

enjoyed this alot!

i love Auggie and his clumsiness, and when he becomes serious during work, and gave it his all. and Leon, with his softness and cuddlingness and patience. the romance was well developed!

i wish Leon was the one getting jealous and realising that he badly wanted Auggie and staking his claim but gosh, i love Auggie getting jealous and possessive!

i was just wondering, what if Auggie didn't have a very huge d"", will Leon still give them a chance afterall?

This could’ve easily been 4 stars but the ending fell a little flat somehow. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but another reviewer said they felt like the ending focused a bit too much on setting up the premise for the next book with Rafe & Cam, so maybe that was it? I dunno. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The rest of the book was fantastic though. I laughed so much and had a dopey smile of my face half the time I listened to it.

The start was amazeballs. Auggie is full of anxiety, spunk, and adorableness.

“I’m not going to be inappropriate or anything but Leon Jeffries is sexy as hell. And a little scary. Actually a lot scary. I’ve never met someone before who I instantly wanted to throw me over his shoulder, carry me off to a secluded cabin in the woods and have his filthy way with me While also being low key terrified. But he kinda brought out all of those things in me.
Perfect really.”
😂😂💙

“My future boss is someone I want to eat me alive. “ 😂 and the hits list keep on coming.

I almost wrecked my car when the audiobook said he plucked up the purple socks with hammers on them, and squealed, saying they would go perfect with his purple safety boots. Nearly WRECKED my car i tell you. This adorable, energetic, sweet Twink. I don't know why purple safety boots surprised me given what I'd read of Auggie so far. And I wasn't sure I could see Leon and Auggie working given how often Leon mentions how he likes his guys as big as him, and Auggie is decidedly not. Despite their mismatched appearances they work as a couple. I'd love to see where their relationship and company go. I imagine as their lives intertwine even more they would become co-owners of LJ Construction.

Some more great hits:

“I approach their table like I imagine I’d approach a drug deal.” CACKLE

“What the actual Fuck is wrong with me.” 😂 right?! I ask that all the time. I am the worst at social anxiety. Everyone who knows me, knows this. So the more awkward a character is the more I luuuuuv them.

These books are low angst but high on sweetness. A good palate cleanser between some of the darker stuff I read.

"Getting Friendly" didn't go as well as I had hoped. It's probably just me, because I didn't like one of the MCs very much and that, of course, carried over to my overall opinion of the story.

Leon has his own construction company and he's doing really well, the only problem is that he has bitten off more than he can chew so he finds himself constantly exhausted and sleep deprived as he tries to make time for everything and and stay on top of all the jobs he has taken on.

Auggie's dream is to work in construction but his uncoordination and his predisposition for accidents make that almost imossible. He's trying to make it any way he can think of but his father's company is not an option anymore so he applies for any job that he can find.

That's how he lands an apprenticeship in Leon's company.

I liked Leon's character a lot, but I had a problem with Auggie. Many aspects of his character frustated me and I didn't like him very much, so I wasn't invested in the romance between them.

This is the first book I've read of this series and, even though the couples from the first two books do make quite a few appearances, I didn't feel lost or like I couldn't follow along. I think I identified one future couple for the series and, if that's the case, then I can't wait to read their story!

~ I read an ARC of this book. ~

A quick read because I didn't want to put it down for any length of time.
Low angst and medium steam and a whole lot of fun.
I loved Auggie, he's a klutz, his dad talks down to him, and he doesn't look like a typical construction guy, but he doesn't let that stop him working towards his dream.
Although he's not Leon's type, they have an immediate connection and chemistry and it's fun to see Leon fight it.
With Leon being his boss there could be an inbalance of power but strict boundaries for work are set out so that didn't worry me.
The characters from the rest of the series do appear but it could possibly work on its own

Leon and Auggie's book remains the top choice for me in this series. I'm bumping down the rating to 4⭐, because of a few small niggles, but best believe this book is very good, I'd recommend reading it, because it's funny, it has two very likeable main characters and gives them a very good happy ending (in the next book they get married, in this one they're together).

I wanted them to definitely be older, to get some kind of bigger closure with Auggie's parents, read more about their work projects and to know what they're doing a few more months down the line, but I'll take what I can get.

Read it! (read the whole series, start from the beginning)

____________________________________

Original review on 20th Sept/22

Rating : 4.75⭐, rounded up

I have to re-write my review for Leon and Auggie’s book, because I made the colossal mistake of reading their story first in the series.
Don’t do that.
Start from the beginning!

🟣 Construction company owner boss / his apprentice
🟡 Both gay (open)
🟢 Age gap 21/24
🔵 Substantial size difference (twink/bear)
🟠 Opposites attract
🌶️ Good sex scenes; oral, penetrative, rimming, small guy big dick, first times (topping), cuddling; vers/b --> both vers

Leon is a big, lumberjack private contractor. He’s openly gay in the small town of Sunbury, he's overworked, running his own construction company, always helping others and constantly busy. He hooks up with big guys regularly and overall barely has time to sleep, let alone consider a relationship.

In the previous book, Auggie introduced himself to Leon during the town festival,

"When we met, there was… a connection. The way his intense eyes roved over me keeps playing through my mind. I’m not going to be inappropriate about it or anything, but Leon Jeffries is sexy as hell. And a little scary. Actually, a lot scary."

but since Auggie is a clumsy, funny, adorable little twink and the son of Leon’s rival, Leon didn’t take him seriously. So when Auggie shows up for a job interview (chosen on his credentials), Leon is skeptical, but Auggie quickly warms his way into Leon’s life and, eventually, his heart.

Auggie somehow convinces Leon to give him a chance, and Leon, who's this protective, sweet, not-daddy bear, takes him under his protection. Auggie makes some mistakes and doesn't have amazing confidence, but Leon is very accepting and just grows to really like Auggie.

And yes, Auggie needs protection literally every step of the way. He’s insanely adorable in his awkwardness and dorkiness, but he’s also highly capable. He just needed someone to believe in him.

Their chemistry is fantastic, their dialogues are funny and the size difference is very good, especially since Auggie isn't Leon's type at all and he's falling for him at record speed. They work together, they become friends, get really close and the falling in love part is just beautifully described.

“So I guess there’s no helping me either,” I murmur.
“And why’s that?” I lean into the hand he rests against my face.
“Because I love you. So much. And it’s scary and amazing and sometimes gives me heartburn because of how much.”
“Heartburn?”
“Yeah. Literally, I think. It’s causing an ulcer.”
His lips pinch. “Well, this was romantic.”

The only thing that bothered me a bit was their ages, I think both of them should’ve been about five years older, they're too young for this kind of commitment, personal and professional.

Still, they’re the most memorable couple in the series for me, and I love them. Their story is funny, sexy and they get married in Raf’s book!

«—Eres increíble. Eres apasionado, divertido y adorable.

Have you ever wanted forbidden fruit? Well who hasn't. But what do you do when that fruit, "Thinks you are yummy?" Don't worry this isn't a zombie fungus reference. Just an interesting slash fiction selection. Where the communication isn't an issue. What's in question is, "What would you give up too be with him?"

Thank goodness goodreads is back online! Over 9 hours down. I started one book and was halfway done with another. I am going to get a journal tomorrow. Should have known to stay with paper first. Then uses technology! Only thing that stops pen on paper is sun going down and running out of ink or paper. #IAWThoughts

Auggie totally stole the show in this one. I adored him and all his klutzy ways. I swear I spent the book waiting for whatever mishap was going to befall him next. The poor guy, he could hardly ever catch a break! Bless Leon's big heart for giving him a chance to show him how great he could be if given the opportunity.

I loved how Leon had always gone after big muscle men which causes him to be super confused about his attraction to Auggie. In fact, Auggie and him share the same type. It isn't until Leon and Aggie decide to start a FWB thing that Leon learns all the ways Auggie is perfect for him. Auggie even has a BIG surprise in store for Leon that sure rocks his world. I think that was one of my favorite scenes of the book!

I do think it took Leon a bit too long to come to realization him and Auggie were basically dating. They worked together, spent most of their free time together both sexual and non sexual. Both of them shared their thoughts and daily lives with each other that it was bound to end up as love. Even Auggies little jealous streak was adorable to both me and apparently Leon if his actions after the fact were anything to go by. Though it took awhile, once Leon committed to the idea of him and Auggie he was full speed ahead.

He's it. He's mine. And I'll do whatever I need to make him happy. Always."

It doesn't get more swoony than that folks. On another note, we get to see Leon trying to repair his relationship with his friend Rafe. If you remember, Rafe decided to be an absolute dick in the previous book and ream out Tanner for being with Roo. It was ugly, and back then I said the man doth protest too much. Well this book contains a teeny tiny little nugget that makes me think I had the right idea back then. It will be interesting to see if James is writing a book 4 in this series and if so who is the MC. I can't wait to find out!

[3.25] Cute & funny, a nice casual read.

Leon : die-hard workaholic (sleep? what's that?); a bit of a control freak who can be as stubborn as an ox; insists his type is big burly guys because he likes it rough and is, and I quote, a "total size whore"; also a huge softie and lover of cuddles.

Auggie : super clumsy (abnormally so, I'm honestly surprised/impressed the guy still has all his limbs attached LOL), a bumbling mess who may or may not grow on you, performative and social anxiety through the roof but surprisingly confident in bed, Mr. McFlirty with a jealous streak when it comes to Leon.

⚠️A walking hazard⚠️

Both POVs contained a lot of them being very aware of their horny ho tendencies and trying (unsuccessfully) to stop their thoughts:

Leon: *keeps mentioning how massive Auggie's schlong is*
Auggie: [in a perpetual state of thirst] omgomgwhatadelicioushunkofmanmeat
🤤

Me @ them : description

This story would've worked better for me had their relationship not felt so one-sided. I thought Auggie was the one pulling all the weight in the relationship while Leon was too caught up in his head and not doing much.

At the very end, when I was more than ready to see Leon put himself out there and ask Auggie on their first official date, OF COURSE Auggie just had to be one step ahead of him 😑

This was still an improvement from the last installment, but the first book continues to hold the number one spot in my heart!

-Opposites attract
-Size difference
-Workaholic
-Family drama (I never did fully understand Auggie's dad)
-Chemistry
-Dual POV
-Fluffy, low angst

Getting Friendly by Saxon James is a cute story, but it was missing something- or maybe I thought Auggie's clumsy/awkwardness was too much at the beginning? I'm not sure, but something didn't add up for me. Don't get me wrong; it was entertaining, and if you've enjoyed the others, you'll enjoy this one. :)
