John Cole's classic IN MAINE is a sometimes moving, sometimes lyrical, but always personal book that reveals a man examining the progress of life and a man reveling in a natural world that not only unfolds around him, but a world in which he is an active participant. IN MAINE features selected essays that first appeared in "John's Column" in the MAINE TIMES--the influential newspaper he co-founded in 1968 and guided during its glory days in the 1970s. This Islandport Press edition also adds more recent essays that still speak to the wondrous rhythms of life in Cole's signature style and demonstrate an enduring passion for Maine and the outdoors that remains unabated.
When I was eleven years old my family spent a summer in a cottage on the Bellamy River near Dover, New Hampshire. The rhythm of the tides was fascinating and for the first time I saw eels and horseshoe crabs and flounder - the ugliest fish I have ever seen. On weekends we made frequent trips into Maine. It was a beautiful learning experience.
Reading Mr. Cole’s essays on Maine brought back many of those memories. They were, as the back of the book says, “…sometimes moving, sometimes lyrical…” I would agree but I also have to say that some of them were dull. He was writing these essays for the readers of his newspaper and sometimes things or events are mentioned that the locals would have known but they meant nothing to me and left me lost. Never-the-less, it was a mostly enjoyable read.
This was sweet! A simple collection of short essays about a man’s life in Maine. It’s so fun to compare how different people see the same place. It was enjoyable but by the end I felt the essays had the same structure and there were too many about being a fisherman. And not one story about his wife? Maybe that’s too judgmental lol
