Ruthless Spring is the second book in the Brutal Winter series and I'm super glad to say that book number two was even better than the first one. I don't say this lightly because Brutal Winter was one of my favorite books last year but the author managed to top it. The book actually blew my away with it's darkness and twists. I loved it so so so much!

At the start of the book Winter still has nine months left of being Giovanni Costa's possession. She knows he has big plans for her but she still doesn't know what those entail and on top of that there's a hit out for her. Meanwhile Giovanni's brother Maximo is still lurking around her, wanting to absolutely destroy her. Bodyguard Enzo won't stop him because he's as much as Maximo's plaything as Winter is. And Vito? He definitely has feeling for Winter but that doesn't mean is isn't a monster as well.

I loved this book in terms of character developement. The scared little mouse is disappearing and slowly she is growing into someone who's learning to bite back when bitten. And oh boy does she get bitten a lot! I really like that it was Lucia (Giovanni and Maximo's cousin) that initially told Winter that she needs to toughen up or die, and she certainly took that advice heartily. I called book one a slow burn but with this sequel I can't say that anymore. The darkness and sex scenes were twice as much, if not even more. And I loved it all! I especially loved that Winter decided to just go with the flow as they say. She knew she couldn't change her situation so she might as well enjoy it a little bit.

I still can't decide which of the guys I like more. I think I may have a soft spot for our psycho Maximo because he went through such bad things with his father. But in the end I really like all the men even though they're twisty as fuck and monsters each and every one. The sex scenes, though, we're all so very hot, like 10/10 on the spicy chart. WHEW!

Also a shout out to Amarie, my favorite secondary character (along with Lucia) who's as enigmatic as she was in book one but there have been some hints that made me think. I think we're gonna get some answers in book three not only about her but also about Winter. I cannot wait!

Ruthless Spring by Quirah Casey is dark romance at its darkest and at its best. It's one of those books that completely consumes you and doesn't let go until the very last word. I'm utterly obsessed!

4.5 mafia stars

Rich plot, compelling characters. Watch Winter change before your eyes.

Internal schemes, mafia power struggles, and tuff wars and Winter is inthe middle for a debt she must settle. It is the spring, and this was a story rich in plot with complex and compelling characters, as well as Winter's evolution.

Winter begins to change from the little mouse, anti-hero Maximo smirkingly called her, to a woman who starts to owns her destiny and begins to shape her circumstances. Equally, Giovanni, Maximo, Vito, and Enzo begin to change in response. Winter is blindly growing on this alpha jerks, and this shaky harem is connecting, melding unwittingly.

While I largely found this story more plot rich and suspenseful than romantic, as the characters changed and the relationships started to flourish, I got inklings of fondness and attraction, a lot of which was against the characters' wills. I know that their love story is just on its way. Giovanni was the ever-controlled capo; Maximo, unleashed and unpredictable force; Vito, protective yet flawed consigliere; and Enzo, reliable, sometimes wavering aide. Side characters -- cousin Lucia, mafia rivals, and quasi-confidante Amarie were pivotal to this mafia tale, and character development all around was excellent. I could see many subplot and side stories as a result.

Chemistry between Winter and the guys for sure, there was attraction even while most of it was shielded in denial. While not the steamiest of reverse harems I've read -- this is a decidedly slow burn, when the spice hit, it was hot! Some of the most sizzling and unique activities yet. The MM was just hot, hot, hot.

The story is told from multiple points of view that really helped get into the minds and motivations. It was a slow burn with a deliberate pace and quite of bit of introspection from Winter, which sometimes made the it falter a bit. The slow-burn intensity, nonetheless, cultivated much of the relationship growth, the blossoming awareness and some softer, romantic feelings over book one, even some jealousy and possessiveness. The ending felt like simply a pause in the story until the next book, not really an abrupt cliffhanger ending but unexpected.

I loved the authentic approach to their mafia world -- the soldiers; the people in their pockets, i.e. the dirty police; the FBI; and their illegal dealings. Nothing was sugar-coated. As the mafia war plot thickens, and alliances are tested, the story left me wondering what is going to happen next for Winter and her role in the future -- because I just know she plays a larger part. I really enjoyed this tale and can't wait to read the next part.

Question: Did I enjoy this book?
Answer: Meh

Question: Why? Why not?
1: Its hard to like the Heroine simply because the author says we should. Every character is enthralled, or in love with Winter, but there was a minimal attempt to develop her as a whole character. Winter is void if personality. There is no passion, anger, fear, or sadness at the horrific sequence of events that continually befall her. She is simply a girl that bad things happen to, over, and over, and over again.
2: No one cares about these multiple unexplained mafia beefs. Choose an antagonist and stick with it. The audience is not invested in any of these interchangeable families seriously. Ramos family, Dox, Diamond who? Yawn!!!!!
3: What is the plot? Nothing, and I mean nothing was revealed in 300+ pages of reading. I literally feel like I could have skipped this novel, especially if book 3 successfully provides some insight and a resolution.

Question: Will I read the next book?
Answer: Absolutely!!! I really like this author, and I’m rooting for for her. While I may sound critical, I recognize that it is incredibly difficult to write steamy, original, creative, and interesting content. For better or worse I’m locked in! Heres to a Cruel Summer (perhaps with more answers, and a little less Massimo).

I’m starting to loose interest.

I want to know to finish Winter’s story, but I’m starting to regret ever reading it. The amount of time to wait for the next one kills the suspense. I’m not a big fan of M/M scene I didn’t think it would have more than one. There’s secret that I thought will be revealed or even address still nothing. Winter at this point is giving the goods to everybody and enjoying it too. Yeah I’ll pass! I can tolerate Maximo and Giovanni, but the rest is a bit too much for my taste. What’s Giovanni problem I don’t get it? I think after he got a taste feeling is coming out now. How can you say “No one touch your pu**y, but you allow your brother and friend to touch & play uh!Diamond is who I’m really liking at this point he’s a straight shooter. I knew there were something about Diamond, at this point I prefer him for Winter.

Im really enjoying reading this series so much. Yes its dark and violent in places with plenty of steam which i liked. My only criticism is with Winter. I understand her situation being at the mercy of Giovanni, Vito, Maximo and Enzo but for me the majority of this book she let them boss and bully her around. That just annoyed me in parts but i actually liked Lucia's influence on her because she gradually changed after that for the better. Im hoping for more of this from Winter in future books and with that cliffhanger ending im dying to find out what will happen next. This series just keeps getting better and better

This one was really rough to get through. It felt quite repetitive and, by the half way point, I couldn’t stand Winter. I’m quitting here because I knew from the last book they were building some sort of forgiveness/empathy thing for Maximo and I don’t want to see that. The dark romance theme of female protags falling for men that brutalize them will never be my thing. By the end of this, I was thinking Vito deserved better so, it’s time for me to quit.

Again, basing my rating off of the execution and not the theme itself: this story felt repetitive. The same back and forth with Gio having Winter come to meetings with gang leaders, her having no idea why, things getting intense and her going home. There’s even the monotony of being told what she was assigned to wear every day and the few events of note spread throughout the story aren’t interesting enough to make me feel like big things happened.

I knew this would tie back to Winter’s mother somehow, but being made to wait 2 books before having that confirmed was baffling. Without it, you spend 2 books being told Gio has a use for her and not being told what that use is. Which just gives way for one of my romance pet peeves: men saying the MC is special and me having no clue why. What about Winter is special? She’s naive, sympathizes for horrible men, and made a deal I still don’t understand. The book has her try to be brave and then, after seconds, she’s a coward again. Why are these men obsessed with her? Oddly enough, if she’d been written as the kind of character that kept trying to appeal to the men’s humanity and empathized with them from the start, I would’ve understood why they loved her. Instead, I am just perpetually confused.

Add to that, this story had Winter start to think Vito was “just as bad” as the others and no, he’s not. He’ll never be as bad as Maximo the perpetual rapist.

Okay Read, but slow moving
First, kudo's to the author for writing this series!
The story became interesting to me at the last 30% of the book, the h was unlikable and weak, I thought that there would be more character growth, but not so much.
Would I continue with this series, I'm not sure that I will.

Finally

I have been waiting and waiting for Winter to toughen up. The pieces of the puzzle are starting to get a little clearer. I love how even when the guys give a little they take back twice as much. It’s a specific kind of torture, that makes reading dark romance so enjoyable. The pace of the book is much better, probably because there is way more action and spice. At this point I love and hate all the guys in equal measure. Matter of fact I kinda love-hate everyone. I just know book 3 is going to be a wild, emotional ride.

love hate relationship with this book

Okay so I get the main characters had to grow but damn she plays victim too many times. I mean in real life a normal person would have just killed themselves rather than being in such a fucked up situation. I still hate most characters except for the main one, but that has more to do the with the story being drawn out. I read the others notes she said something about four books…. Ahhh no. Stick with three!

Quick overview of book 1 Brutal Winter: Winter signs a contract to become the property of the Costas family for one year in exchange for her brother's life. Giovanni, the leader, has ulterior motives for taking her when he did. She is subjected to assaults from the men she is forced to live with (Maximo the psycho/sadist, Enzo the enforcer in a MM relationship with Maximo, Vito the fixer and nicest of the men, and Giovanni the leader) as well as attempts on her life related to the problems the Costas have with other crime organizations.

Book 2 picks up where book one ended, with Winter killing a man from the Ramos Cartel.

So Winter has now been with the Costa mafia for a few months, managed to find their "rat", killed a man, and feels her identity slipping away.

Maximo gave her a break after he was punished by his brother Giovanni, but that doesn't last long. He again r@pes Winter, but she decides to not put up a fight. Also, her relationship with Vito goes through some ups and down. He is becoming attached to her which causes problems for him and she starts to see his cruel side which makes her feel more alone.

After killing someone from the Ramos Cartel, there is a hit out for Winter. The men spend a lot of time fending off attacks on her. However, something from the prologue kept bothering me. The prologue is from the mafia leader Giovanni's perspective. He says in regards to the deal Richard made for him to take Winter,

"This is the piece of sh¡t I promised to let live in exchange for his sister. He'd made the offer to me himself. Little did he know it wasn't the first time Winter Chastine had been offered to me. It'd just been the first time that the timing was perfect."

He talks about wanting to hit her, k¡ll her, and f♡ck her. What in the world happened that he would want revenge on Winter when she has never met him before?

I really liked that we got to meet some secondary characters that added to to the plot. There are a few I can see getting their own spinoff.

And as far as building her relationships with these men, none of them care about her, but they are all attracted to her. Maximo continues to have noncon relations with her, and drags Enzo into it for one situation. Vito, hasn't slept with her but has had his mouth on her many times, and Giovanni uses her as a punishment for her disobedience. At this point, I wouldn't take any of them.

I am interested to see where this is going. Winter has survived another attempt on her life and the Ramos cartel has been taken care of. Giovanni seems ready for the next step in destroying her and someone may have some answers for her about her mother. So much to learn yet.

Crazy, dark and ohhhh so good🥵😈🖤

Oh My Goodness the Costa brothers and their 2 right hand men are CRAAAAZY and I love it😱🥰☺️.  I was so looking forward to this book and it didn’t disappoint at all.  The circumstances for Winter hasn’t changed, as a matter of fact it’s gotten worse not only for her but for Giovanni as well😖.  New families are threatening the Costa family and trying to get at them through a weak link.  Winter also happens to be on someone’s radar and now the family is doubling their protection.

Regardless of the fight at their door Giovanni, Maximo, Vito and Enzo all can’t seem to stay away from Winter.  They have different reasons for wanting her, to touch, torcher, please and discipline her by breaking her down emotionally, mentally, and physically all while they get their rocks off😈🔥😈.  Winter herself is resigning to her new normal and as she braces herself from these assaults by the guys she’s conflicted with her emotions.  Her fear is palpable yet her desire for them, to make her feel good during her torment is even more intense and confusing🥵🔥🥵.

I’m enjoying all the new information of the characters, they seem to be allies of Winter but it’s unclear especially when they are all part of a the criminal underground😝.  Im glad they are giving her courage to be strong and stand up confidently😬. Amarie and Diamond are 2 that has me wondering what their end game is🤔.  I’m definitely looking forward to the next book to see how Winter handles herself and how the guys interact with her.  Whatever Giovanni has planned has to be big and I can’t wait to see what happens😰.

In case you have not read book 1 note that there are several trigger in these books‼️

Ruthless Spring is the second book in the Brutal Winter series. I did not think this series could get any better than the first book, but this one delivers even more than the first! The storyline continues where Brutal Winter ended. These are not standalone books, and you need to read them in order.

What is fantastic is that Winter is beginning to step out of her fears and is gaining more confidence. Her time with the Costa Family brings much more drama, more intensely hot moments, many betrayals and twists, suspense, and more. The mystery of Giovanni's plans for her begins to unravel as Amarie becomes even more of a mystery.

Winter is starting to figure this world out which may or may not be a good thing. Confusion enters the picture as Giovanni, Maximo, Vito, and Enzo struggle with feelings for her, or perhaps it's just intense lust. Each wants to use her somehow, and now she is figuring out how she can still get a bit of an upper hand. Lucia is still somewhat an ally but is just as stuck in this testosterone-driven man's world. Then there is Dox and his son Diamond. They insist that they are not Winter's enemies, but both leave a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. They are up to something. Hopefully, Winter will figure out what they are up to before she gets hurt or worse.

Ruthless Spring ends with a draw-dropping conversation between Winter and Diamond that sets up book three, Cruel Summer. Note that there are elements of murder, rape, torture, abuse, and more in these books that some may find triggering.

actual rating - 3.5 stars.

okay so… this was generally better than the first book. the characters were all a little more palatable. Winter got so much better. i’m never one to complain when a m/c is depressed/whiny/cries a lot, especially bc most of the time the situation warrants that, but something about Winter really has been rubbing me the wrong way. so thank god for our lord and saviour Lucia and her little chats with Winter bc now she’s starting to toughen up, i like her a little more.

i can’t stand Maximo. i know the author wants us to like him, but i can’t just forget the events of the first book. tbh i did find myself starting to like him a tiny bit (probably as Winter started being more okay with him), but every time that small voice in my head was like ‘stop right there… he literally raped her’. so here’s where i become a hypocrite. Maximo is inherently bad. i don’t like him. when he does something bad, it just proves me right. but Vito… i do actually love Vito. it doesn’t matter how many times he’s nice to Winter one second and then treating her like trash the next, it doesn’t matter that he keeps insisting he’s the worst - my brain just goes 🥺🥺🥺🥺 whenever he’s mentioned.

i’ve gotta give credit to Quirah Casey tho. i was so ready to give up on this series during the first book. but this second one has piqued my interest enough that i already kinda feel impatient for the third one.

Winter’s Saga

Winter is starting to grow some backbones, yay! She is not by any means weak, the things that girl been through and still standing, most would fold and gave up on life. Human are survivors by nature but to survive emotional, physical, sexual …for so long … I don’t know if I could. Lucia and Amarie can make her grow a pair! lol. Who is Amarie !?
You know Maximo is growing on me, can you believe he is protecting Winter, when he is one of her bigger monsters!? But, in his own way he is eliminating some of her monsters. Giovanni, well, the jury still out! Vito, is the Villain you can’t quite figure out, I do love Vito & the fact he is not good, he is bad … but still has that part of him that couldn’t help caring for Winter. So please, let my Vito have some happiness 💕Enzo, is just Enzo, a soldier just like Maximo like to refer to him, and because of his love and loyalty to Maximo, he let him maneuvering him like a puppet, hence his washi washi attitude., dont mistake it for weakness.
Diamond seems more than what you see…
Polo & Daria, I can wait for their story 😉 just saying!
Ok, enough said ! Book 3 is awaiting me!
Loving the series!

A struggle read with good writing

I am struggling with this story. I like the way the author can set the scene and flesh out the emotions. That's it, everything else I hate. I hate the male characters in this book. I hate where it's going. Winter is just exhausting. This poor girl has been used and abused since the first page in the first book and it's not letting up.

I'm not sold on her liking Maximo degrading her after he brutal rapes her. His brother Giovanni is worse. I don't care for Vito or Enzo's wishy-washy attitude. I especially hate the implied consent after the fact. Just because your body is responding to what's happening doesn't mean mentally you enjoy it. What Maximo and Giovanni do to Winter is straight degrading. They want to break her and for the life of me I don't understand why. I'm trying to figure out where this story is going.

I'm currently on book 3 and it gets worse in that one. Not the writing but the overall story is dragging. If you can stomach brutal rape scenes and entitled men then this series is for you.

Still Rooting for Winter

*****Spoilers*****

I'm still finding it kind of hard to understand Winter in this series as I wait for her to take back some control and think her way through the life that she's living with Giovanni, Vito, Maximo, and Enzo. I'd like to see her make smarter decisions and she commits to own what happens to her but the sexual brutalization is an uncomfortable pill to swallow. I'm hopeful that she gets the strength she needs to turn things around in her favor when it comes to dealing with the guys and the life she was thrust into. Winter's getting more involved in dangerous situations and is being taught to use a weapon, next come the self defense lessons but still too gentle for what she's put through.

The guys all have their own issues and Winter is in the middle of a lot. Still rooting for her though she's losing herself it seems as she's not the tough girl but has moments of defiance.

Patiently (and anxiously) waiting for this book!!

I tried so hard not to binge read this book but who was i kidding; I've been patiently waiting since August of last year to read the next book in this series. I should've paced myself because now that I'm done, I'm back to anxiously waiting for the next in this series. This was such a good book from start to finish.

I knew there was something "special" about Winter since book one. Giovanni comes across as a meticulous man and taking a woman for a debt seems beneath him. What are his true plans for Winter? What's her back story/family story? I honestly disliked him in the first novel for his lack of "attention" to Winter but he did not disappoint this time. I love an anti-hero in a RH story, it's one of the reasons why i love a dark romance. Give me a book where the male character remains a d*** from beginning to end any day! I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Ruthless Spring is definitely better than its predecessor Brutal Winter. However, I still can’t help but feel that the story is lacking. For one I believe the author really should look into getting a new editor, there were grammatical errors which I could certainly overlook, but what bothered me most was that there were instances in which the characters names were not correct in either spelling or point of view and certain times you weren’t sure from who was speaking. The title character irritates me, literally irks my soul. Too many times within the story has winter had the opportunity to redeem herself or grow a backbone and prove that she is strong and she just utterly fails. For instance there will be a scene where in Winter is a complete badass just for her to turn around a few pages later and go back to being a cowarding nuisance. A character like Winter has so much promise but continues to fall short due to the authors uncertainty with what to do with her.

Meh

I am trying to like this series. However, I find it dragging and it leaves you to a build up that never happens. What is the final plan for Winter? What does Gio really want to do to her & why? I am sick of Maximo. The author stated in the last book that Maximo is her favorite character, and it shows. You get mostly sexual interactions with Winter & Maximo. We get a sneak peek of Vito, Enzo, and a little bit of Giovanni. I wasn't a fan of the scene with Winter, Enzo & Maximo because I hate him (Maximo) so much and MM does nothing for me. Why does Giovanni hate her so much? Why do these men want to punish her so bad just for being alive? Please in the next book let Giovanni name be spelled correctly? Giovanni was misspelled several times in this book. Who is Diamond to her and why does he want to be around her if he doesn't want to control/possess her like the Costas?

Winter is back and this is no spring fling. The story picks up where Brutal Winter left off and Winter has no idea the trouble her brother is once again in. Has her life gotten any better, no it seems to be getting worse but Winter is learning the men and learning herself. I was hoping life would get better for her but it feels more brutal than the last book, even if she is becoming more accepting of it. You feel as if she is a pawn in a puzzle that she nor we or privy to at this. There is no unity among the men, there are at least two camps with the brothers being in charge on opposite sides. Is Giovanni as smart as he seems or is Maximo just as brilliant, maybe even more so? I’m looking forward to the final book to see where Winter, the men, and even Diamond end up.. A Favorite Series - A Favorite Author

I cannot rave enough about these characters, this fictional world, this series, this author. This is book 2 in the Brutal Winter series, and it was thrilling and awesome. As a #whychoose dark romance, the heroine is destined to be end up in a relationship with more than one hero/anti-hero/villain. However, we readers often love/favor some love interests over the others. I am #teamvito usually, but I must admit that my naughty dark heart is attracted to #teammaximo as well. But hey— Giovanni is making his delicious move and I’m ready for it. Truthfully, I wouldn’t mind if Lucia also staked a claim on Winter, but that’s probably wishful thinking on my part. But she’s so hot too, tho. (lol)

Talk about a heart pounding, drama induced, action packed story. This series is fabulous. It is dark and addicting. It pulls you in and doesn’t let go. Winter has to endure so much under the Costa household. One wrong step and she is heads over heels in trouble. At times you have to love the members of the Costa family but other times it makes you want to slap them all. The story is one that is extremely well written and developed. The descriptions are vivid and this allows you to easily picture the scenes as they play out. The ending was major and I can’t wait to see what happens next. This is a must read and it doesn’t disappoint.

I'm conflicted about this book. The are several likes. I like that Winter is starting to show some backbone. I like that she's trying to take back control of her sexuality. I like the way her interactions with the men are becoming more then just captor/prisoner. But I was hoping for the reverse harem part to be more developed in this book. It doesn't quite feel like a rh story yet. I was also hoping for more secrets to be revealed. I know this is book 2 of 4 but I was really hoping for more information. There are lots of teases so I'm hoping information will be more forthcoming next book. I also didn't expect to start liking Maximo as much as I did. I'm invested enough to keep reading the series.

It's quite odd in the author's note she says it doesn't sit right with her how much hate Maximo got and how everyone wanted Winter to be with just Vito. But I'm like wtf did you expect? Maximo is definitely a fucking villain. A rapist. A demoralizing fucking asshole. Why even though he's supposed to be part of this "reverse harem" would any sane person want winter to wind up with him? There's absolutely no redemption and no coming back from the brutal rapes that Max does to Winter. And although the author says other people think Winter is weak. I just see a very damaged, naive, flawed soul whose is trying hard to just be able to breathe from one moment to the next. I know because the author is going for extremely dark and depraved I still hope that she'll allow Winter to get therapy for the trauma she continues to endure. But I'd say I'm quite annoyed with Quirah because you've victimized Winter from a child to an adult. When do you give her her wings back so she can fly. Because depravity just for the hell of it with no light at the end of the tunnel is so incredibly cruel. And I could care less about Maximo and Enzo toxic relationship. It adds no value to the story overall. And Maximo telling Winter about his father abuse and now his brother. Were we suppose to feel sympathy for him along with Winter? I don't get why Winter felt sympathy for a monster. I don't get why Giovanni even bothers with the basement. It does NOTHING to curb Maximo violence and vileness. Why even bring it up it's pointless.

Addicted

I am addicted to this series and I have been anticipating this release and I was not disappointed! When most authors start slipping after the repeated of their first-ever sequel book not this author. Not only did she add more action, drama, kick butt female characters but also more Costa men point of views which I love and the sex scenes were wow wow wow so hot I had to reread again began we I was shocked in a sexy excellent way. Please read this series start with Brutal winter first and then read this one. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. A Sexy black woman with four sexy alpha Italian men who take care of her yes please.!!!

Worth the wait...

After the events at the conclusion of the last book, Winter Chastine now has a price on her head in addition to continuing to navigate the mine field that is Giovanni, Maximo, Vito and Enzo.

With a little moral support from Lucia and Amara, she starts to take a little of her power back. It doesn't always work but even with the sometimes violent setbacks she suffers, she's still progressing.

Overall is a good follow up to the last book. There are some continuity issues and editing issues in the last half of the book but they don't distract from the story.

Holy hell what a ride

I have been looking forward to this book for a while now and Quirah Casey has not disappointed. Winter is smack bang in the middle of a situation she has no control over and though initially cowed, you start to see snippets of her becoming the bad ass you know she will eventually become. I'm intrigued to see what her connection to Diamond is and although I have a theory I'll wait until the next book to see if I'm correct. Pay heed to the trigger warnings, there are some very intense scenes.

The Winter and Costa Family saga continues into Spring. Winter is never not in danger now. With cartels and gangs after her and members of the Costa household too will she ever feel safe again? Her place of work is not the haven she thought it could be. Winter's work colleagues don't trust her and should she trust them? How is Winter to survive all this attention she is under. Winter has to survive two more seasons but will she really be free? Summer is coming.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
