Alle feiten over de mysterieuze verdwijning van Kris en Lisanne in Panama
Op 1 april 2014 keren Kris Kremers (21) en Lisanne Froon (22) niet terug van een wandeling in de jungle van Panama. Maandenlange zoekacties, bemoeilijkt door het slechte weer, leveren niets op. Twee maanden later wordt er diep in de jungle een rugzak gevonden met daarin onder meer hun telefoons en camera, waarop vreemde foto’s gevonden worden. Dit leidde tot wilde speculaties over de verdwijning die tot op de dag van vandaag voortduren. Zijn ze verdwaald, ontvoerd, beroofd?
Marja West en Jürgen Snoeren zetten – in samenwerking met Betzaida Pitti (oud-Officier van Justitie in Panama die in 2014 de zaak leidde) – alle feiten over deze schokkende verdwijning op een rij. Ze kregen toegang tot nog niet eerder openbaargemaakte documenten en spraken een groot aantal deskundigen in binnen- en buitenland. Tijdens hun zoektocht naar de waarheid komen ze tot conclusies die de zaak op zijn kop zet.

Ik begrijp de eerste golf aan 5 sterren niet zo goed. Het is een tragische maar ook interessante verdwijningszaak. Maar dit was jammer genoeg geen goed geschreven verhaal. Het schiet heen en weer tussen onderwerpen en in tijd. Jammer. Sommige delen waren onnodig langdradig en technisch. Het was de leesbaarheid ten goede gekomen als er wat strakker geredigeerd en herordend was. Het is ook slordig dat de auteurs niet consequent overkomen. Ze zeggen de strijd aan te gaan met internet detectives maar gebruiken het onderzoek van diezelfde internet detectives als vulling voor hun boek. Zij gaan de strijd aan met desinformatie, maar in hun boek staan veel en zelfs een aantal zeer belangrijke onbewezen aannames en een theorie met de nodige gaten. Zij hebben het over ethiek maar publiceren een boek tegen de wens van de ouders van deze meisjes. Deze inconsequenties zijn jammer en doen af aan hun verder wel geloofwaardige eindconclusie. Alleen deze eindconclusie is dezelfde die al zeven jaar wordt aangehangen door de autoriteiten. De auteurs meldden in de media dat het boek er toch echt moest komen, vanwege de journalistieke waarde ervan. Een aparte uitspraak. Want ze zijn zelf niet naar Panama gegaan voor nieuw onderzoek of om tot nieuwe inzichten te komen. Ik begrijp uit de media onderhand dat dit geen onderzoeksjournalisten zijn maar vrij onbekende fictie schrijvers. Maar om dan zo weinig nieuwe feiten of nieuw onderzoek te brengen, dat vind ik een zwakte.
Want wat je feitelijk overhoudt is een samenvatting van het onderzoeksrapport. Zij kregen het van de ex openbaar aanklaagster die al in begin 2015 uit haar functie is gezet. Maar die blijkbaar nog wel de onderzoeksresultaten mee naar huis heeft genomen. Dit doet m.i. ook een beetje afbreuk aan de neutraliteit van de schrijvers. Ik had in ieder geval iets van redelijke kritiek verwacht op het onderzoek, maar nee. En na het lezen weet je nog steeds niet wat er echt is gebeurd. Dus een gemiste kans. Ik vond de toon vd schrijvers ook storend soms. 1,5 ster, vooruit ik rond het af naar boven.

Ik heb moeite met dit boek. Toen ik hoorde van dit boek, kreeg ik het idee dat deze schrijvers terplekke onderzoek gedaan hadden, maar dat is niet het geval. Het eerste deel van het boek bespreekt alle (complot) theorieën, over wat er mogelijk gebeurd kan zijn. De schrijvers doen hier onderzoek naar en bevestigen/weerleggen stellingen op basis van hun onderzoek. Met grote regelmaat geven ze af op zogenaamde internet detectives, maar de schrijvers gebruiken zelf heel veel van de informatie van die internet detectives. Ze zijn zelf nooit in Panama geweest. Excuus hiervoor is dat de trip niet gemaakt kon worden ivm de Corona uitbraak, maar hadden ze dan niet gewoon nog even moeten wachten met dit boek?
In het tweede deel beschrijven ze voornamelijk de officiële politierapporten en uitkomsten van diverse onderzoeken en uiteindelijk sluiten ze af met een conclusie die zij trekken gebaseerd op alles wat zij in hun onderzoek ontdekt hebben. Die conclusie is dus hun interpretatie. Persoonlijk vind ik het daarom ongepast om dit boek in de markt te zetten als “de waarheid” in de zaak van de verdwenen vrouwen in de jungle.
Daarnaast vind ik de schrijfstijl ook niet geweldig. Het springt op sommige momenten nogal van de hak op de tak en ze springen ook regelmatig op en neer in de tijd, op een zeer verwarrende manier. Ineens zijn er hoofdstukken die geschreven zijn vanuit het perspectief van anderen, maar dat wordt niet heel duidelijk aangegeven. Heel veel zaken worden meerdere keren herhaald zonder dat het nuttig is voor het verhaal en ook dat begint op den duur een beetje irritant te worden.
Ik vind wel dat ze respectvol over Kris en Lisanne schrijven, maar ik kan me wel goed voorstellen dat de families niet achter dit boek staan.

Je kunt als schrijvers een heel blik vrienden en bekenden opentrekken voor denzelfde 5 sterren cliché reviews maar de gemiddelde lezer hier kijkt daar wel doorheen. Slecht geschreven met een grote chaos van thema's. Schaamteloos informatie her en der vandaan geplukt en nog veel schaamtelozer een boek uitgebracht dat er enkel en alleen had mogen komen met support van de ouders van de slachtoffers. Of beter als zij zelf een dergelijk boek hadden uitgebracht. Schande ook richting de uitgeverij. Zoals John van den Heuvel het treffend op TV zei; de reden voor dit werk ontgaat je volledig na het lezen. Een vat vol aannames en nog erg matig geschreven ook.

Biased and unscientific book unfortunately. What these two writers did is using all the information which has already been gathered & published for free online by people like Juan Perea and Scarlet from Koudekaas. And they go through it all as if they discovered it themselves. Then and this is more problematic, then they make a point of addressing all the theories of what happened to Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon on April 1st. But they do so by pushing every crime theory aside until they get to their own preference - Lost. The arguments are never convincing but along the lines of 'We see no reason for', ' We see no evidence for'. So you have a ton of information first which is already gathered by others for free online. And then they give the most biased treatment to the information that is out there. To finally end up with their own views. I mean 'the truth', lol.
This is where the book really becomes a fail. The writers made up the existence of a second memory card. And humiliatingly had to take it out of their next prints once they were found out online. They invented this second card despite the police files stating only one such card was found and inventorized. Flagrant lies to steer the case to their own desired end point. Why did they lie about this? Because they needed a second memory card to explain away one of the most troublesome details in this case; the missing photo or video file #509. Which is a red flag and hinders the 'Lost' scenario. Because they had to take out this fake info, the authors show their bias and unreliability and it also shows that their own verdict was essentially being a complete shambles.
The book comes with a totally unproven and unbelievable end theory also. Kris and Lisanne would have wandered away from the summit without ever noticing this. Walked down to the river and still didnt realize they left behind the high mountain range. Which was right behind them. To keep walking the wrong way. Slept in a shed, when there is not a shred of evidence that they ever were in this shed as police found nothing there, no dna no hairs nothing.
It is a sad ending to a sad book and the families of Kris and Lisanne expressed their anger and unwillingness to cooperate with these authors as their daughter's story was hijacked for $$$ here. The book was pitched as solving this case and turning the case upside down, which is another lie. No new evidence is shared. Just r*pping off the work of internet sleuths, who the hypocr. and envious sounding authors belittle at every turn in their book. And a collection of pages which make up expensive and badly written messy fiction full of misplaced ego and arr*gance. This one won't go down in history, bc of its poor writing, disingenuous motives & the manipulation of evidence and subsequent need to humiliatingly have to edit the book to correct the lies.

This was not exactly what I expected it to be. It does an ok job of laying everything out but took a lot of information straight from online free sources. Only this book echoes the police end findings. You also won't learn about some important events that point more towards crime because they left them out. But I was lead to believe it would give something at least approaching definitive answers in the end when it really doesn't. And there is little evidence, just their own opinions. This book is heavily promoted on socials by the authors, but I had to translate the ebook through complicated steps. I'm definitely not buying the book again if it does ever come out in English. That should be free for those who already bought it. This book reads at times like a police file and it offers no new facts or answers.

If you are familiar with the case of the lost girls of Panama (Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers) then this book is definitely worth reading. It goes deeper than video, article, theories that I have seen about the case on the internet.
The circumstances surrounding their disappearance is still confusing 7 years after they went missing.
Why didn’t the girls turn around at the top of the trail?
Why is photograph 509 missing from Lisanne’s camera?
Why didn’t they leave some kind of message on their phones detailing what happened to them before they perished?
Why were so little remains of the girls found?
Were they kidnapped?
Were they murdered?
Did they just get lost and die of exposure?
This book proposes all of these questions but it doesn’t necessarily answer any of them definitively speaking, which is understandable considering that much of the case is open ended.
But it does dive deep into all of those questions and gives pretty good answers depending on whatever theory you believe happened to the girls.
My own personal theory is that they continued onto the trail and into the continental divide instead of turning around at the top of the the Pianista trial. I believe that they thought the trail would loop back around in instead of leading them deeper into the jungle.
The trail becomes harder and harder to follow the deeper into the jungle you go. At some point they get off track of the trail. They realize that they are lost and more than likely keep walking into the jungle thinking that they will reach civilization eventually if they keep waking in one direction.
They spend the next week turning their phones on in the morning trying to get reception to call emergency services. None of the calls ever go through.
Lisanne’s phone used a flashlight app on her phone throughout the night on April 6-7 which makes me believe that they were moving around and trying to use the flashlight to see.
At some point during that night Lisanne suffered some kind of a fall which incapacitated her (she had over 20 fractures in her foot that was found which indicates that she suffered a major fall of some kind.)
The nighttime photos were taken in a reclining position at the bottom of a ravine by Lisanne. Most of the photos are taken with the camera pointed directly at the sky with the flash on.
Search parties were using bright lights to search the jungle the night that the photos were taken. I have no doubt that the girls saw the lights and were trying to signal that they were at the bottom of a ravine with the camera flash.
After 10-11 days the girls would have passed away from starvation, dehydration, exposure or some other cause. The ravine where the nighttime photos were taken is probably the place that the girls died because Lisanne had a broken bones in her foot by that point and wouldn’t have been able to move around much.
The rainy season was just starting when the girls got lost. Floods would’ve carried their belongings and remains all across the jungle.
It is a sad and unfortunate case. One that has touched me deeply ever since I heard about it years ago. Whatever did become of them I hope the girls are at peace.

De schrijfwijze van dit boek, is without a doubt, een beetje een mix-match situatie. Door het constant over nieuw beginnen dacht ik vrij bij het eind dat ik dezelfde katern als de eerste aan het luisteren was. Echter was het zeker dat ik op het eind was.
Ik vind het moeilijk dit boek te beoordelen. Het heeft mij kippenvel gegeven en toch ook een beetje een inzicht. Het idee dat de schrijvers het hebben geschreven om complot theorieën uit de weg te halen is na mijn mening, niet het juiste doel van het schrijven. Ik vraag mij dan ook af wat de ouders hier van vonden. Ik heb ook zo mijn twijfels aan het feit dat de schrijvers nooit naar Panama zijn geweest. Dit kon niet om de pandemie, maar hoe kom je dan aan deze bronnen? Simpel via zoom/meet/telefoon/skype en noem maar op? Dat haalt natuurlijk niet weg da de bronnen betrouwbaar zijn of niet. Je kunt immers ook niet elke leugen ontdekken wanneer je recht tegenover iemand staat. Ik denk dat in het algemeen dit boek heel interessant is, het geeft echter alleen maar meer vraagstukken. Plus het feit dat je complot theorieën wil weg halen en yet "internet detectives" vraagt omdat het zo goed ging tijdens Don't fuck with cats en alle theorieën bij langs gaat, werkt naar mijn mening gewoon averechts.
Ik denk dat we nooit het echte antwoord zullen weten. Wat mij heel frustrerend lijkt voor de ouders. En de fouten van handeling in het hele onderzoek, lijkt mij op zijn zachts gezegd gewoon heel pijnlijk. Maar dit boek opent misschien alle wonden alleen opnieuw? Is het niet tijd om rust te geven aan de ouders en niet constant deze wond te blijven vullen met vuil?

I can't believe that this wasn't yet brought up here. By other reviewers. But these authors have printed some major misinformation in this book. I understand that they now removed it in their ebook and in new prints. But without even a rectification note! So people who bought the book in the beginning have different information than the ones who may buy it right now. Just incredible.
I'm talking about their claim that there were two SanDisk memory cards found in the bag of Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon. Authors brought this as a fact in their book. They claim that two memory cards were found in the bag. And named in the inventory list of the official policeman who first inspected the bag. Or so the authors claim! They did not realize that there are other 'internet-detectives' active. Who had the same source info as they. And sleuths found out that they made this second memory card up. It is not in the inventory list at all.
So now they have had to change this clear misinformation. Because there was only one memory card. Why is this important? Because they used this second made-up memory card to explain away the missing photo with number 509. Based on nonsense. Because they were busted by someone reputable who had the file as well without them knowing about it.
Another thing they made up and have now changed is the lie that a cop saw attempts from Kris and Lisanne in their phone to send text messages. While they were already missing. This was also made up by them. So people who buy the book now have a version where this information was silently removed. Meanwhile we are supposed to be upset about 'internet-detectives' who spread misinformation. I find this hypocritical. Sorry but this has ruined their reliability for me.
I did not like the book too much either. Long, a lot of the same info being repeated. No clear structure and a lot of propraganda for the prosecutor and guest author Pitti. Sorry. Just being honest here.

They did not realize that there are other 'internet-detectives' active. Who had the same source info as they. And sleuths found out that they made this second memory card up. It is not in the inventory list at all.
So now they have had to change this clear misinformation. Because there was only one memory card. Why is this important? Because they used this second made-up memory card to explain away the missing photo with number 509. Based on nonsense. Because they were busted by someone reputable who had the file as well without them knowing about it.
Another thing they made up and have now changed is the lie that a cop saw attempts from Kris and Lisanne in their phone to send text messages. While they were already missing. This was also made up by them. So people who buy the book now have a version where this information was silently removed. Meanwhile we are supposed to be upset about 'internet-detectives' who spread misinformation. I find this hypocritical. Sorry but this has ruined their reliability for me.
I did not like the book too much either. Long, a lot of the same info being repeated. No clear structure and a lot of propraganda for the prosecutor and guest author Pitti. Sorry. Just being honest here.

Vrij droge reportage. Leest niet als een doorlopend verhaal. Schiet van het ene deelonderwerp naar het andere. En weer terug. Soms is het net alsof je een droog politierapport leest. Dat geldt ook voor de schrijfstijl. Helder, maar meer ook niet. Geen literaire waarde. Geen persoonlijke ervaringen want de auteurs hebben voor hun onderzoek Nederland niet verlaten. En ook geen neutraal boek. De openbaar aanklaagster heeft haar eigen hoofdstukjes die vaak sentimenteel en onprofessioneel klinken. Kritiek op de autoriteiten is er niet. Enkel journalisten en webdetectives krijgen er van langs. Dieptepunt is dat de auteurs zelf afsluiten met een ongeloofwaardige en onbewezen eindtheorie.
N.B. hoe het zich ethisch rijmt om een financieel slaatje uit dit drama te slaan, terwijl de ouders hiervoor geen toestemming hebben gegeven en er zelfs tegen gekant zijn, ontgaat mij.

Het betere jatwerk. Teleurstellend boek dat voor groot deel is gevuld met het onderzoekswerk van anderen. Ik denk in het bijzonder aan twee bloggers/youtubers. Flink gegraaid in hun gratis zaakinformatie, maar gepresenteerd als het onderzoek van de auteurs zelf. Tragisch boek in veel opzichten. bespaar u geld en moeite en zoek de zaakinformatie online op. Meer gedetailleerd en met minder aannames en feitenmanipulatie.

I'm a sucker for books like this that try to piece together the decisions/events that led to a final, tragic outcome. I vaguely remember seeing the news about the girls' disappearance back in 2014, but I didn't remember how sensational the story was. Just a few weeks ago, a piece about this book came across my news feed and caught my attention. I became engrossed in the book despite the fact that it was poorly translated - missing words, awkward sentence construction, terrible grammar, strange punctuation. I think this was a low-budget operation, and they just tossed this manuscript through the cheapest possible translation program. Still, I was fascinated, and it broke my heart.

Was begonnen aan het boek, maar het heeft zo weinig samenhang, dat ik het niet heb afgelezen. Het onderwerp is interessant, maar daar houdt het dan ook op. Je wordt als lezer van links naar rechts geslingerd en er worden weinig echte conclusies getrokken. Een boek dat zo moeilijk je aandacht houdt dat je hem niet uitleest, is in mijn ogen 1 ster waard.

Это одна из самых интересных и грустных историй в тру крайме. Я пересматривала видео про Крис и Лисанн много-много раз, все они разные и опираются на разные причины их исчезновения, но превосходят эту книгу хотя бы в одном — в том, сколько времени уделено рассказу о девушках.
Книга же почти целиком концентрируется на методах расследования. Здесь и об окружном прокуроре Панамы, и о спецотряде с собаками из Нидерландов, и о недовольстве родителей ходом дела. Много о случайных свидетелях, уликах и неподходящих версиях. Но, учитывая то, что нет ни одного вменяемого воспоминания о Крис и Лисанн в последние часы, когда бы их кто-нибудь видел, почти все главы об этом выглядят как вода.
Чувствуется, что авторы очень хотели описать цельную картину произошедшего, но из-за недостатка доказательств промахнулись с акцентами. Условно книгу можно разделить на три большие части.
В первой нас поверхностно знакомят с девушками. Тут есть интересные детали, которые в видео упускались (или я сама уже забыла?). Например, о том, что они пропали не сразу, а какое-то время уже отдыхали в Панаме. Скромно упоминаются их характеры и примерные модели поведения в странных ситуациях.
Вторая часть описывает процесс расследования. Много повторов, но мало выводов и обобщений. Совсем необязательно быть экспертом в области криминалистики, чтобы интересно описать это дело, но у авторов не получилось. Если эту часть сжать до трех-четырех небольших глав, мало что изменится.
В третьей части рассматриваются основные версии и приводятся аргументы против версии с криминалом. В конце мы так и не получаем внятного ответа, почему эта книга вообще была написана.
Как по мне, это трагичное дело в итоге стало сухими цифрами и размытыми попытками доказать то, что доказать сложно. Личности Крис и Лисанн потерялись за официальными документами. Ну и как обычно — любое бесплатное видео на ютубе про девушек в тысячу раз лучше книги, за которую авторы получают деньги.

Eigenlijk is het boek een grote samenvatting van wat al bekend is en is alles op een rijtje gezet. Nieuwe inzichten oid hoef je niet te verwachten. Gedurende het lezen blijft het een onbehaaglijk gevoel geven dat er zoveel gebruik is gemaakt van internetdetectives en leeswerk en ze zelf ook nooit daadwerkelijk in Panama zijn geweest.
Verder zat het boek qua volgorde niet fijn in elkaar: onderwerpen die al eerder zijn behandeld komen later in het boek weer terug en er is daardoor sprake van nogal wat herhaling.
Het is een tragisch verhaal waar waarschijnlijk nooit definitieve antwoorden over zullen komen. De eindconclusie van verdwaling en een ongeluk wordt goed overgebracht door de schrijvers. Ik raad het boek zeker wel aan als je meer over de verschillende scenario's en de waarschijnlijkheid daarvan wil weten.

Interessant verhaal over de vermissing van Kris en Lisanne met soms gruwelijke details. De vele herhalingen en soms te technische beschrijvingen maakten het soms wel pittig om bij het verhaal te blijven.

The first half of the book is quite good, they list all the current theories and mix it with some own research and ideas off the internet. But in the second half, the book starts to drag. Suddenly chapters are written by guest authors and they repeat the same things all over.
One of the guest authors is the chief of the police investigation, and that is a remarkable choice, since she got criticized for questionably handling this case. With this publication she clearly takes the opportunity to clean her name, by writing an emotionally driver chapter. The authors don't mention how they got hold of the complete police report, but it kind of speaks for itself.
The writers are not too keen on internet detectives and journalists spreading theories and rumors, but they are in fact doing exactly the same. They composed the book from behind their desks and wrote their own theory. A reasonable, well deducted theory, but a theory nevertheless.
Worth a read if, after everything you read on Scarlet's blog and Imperfect Plan, you're still not completely satisfied with the amount of information you have on this case.

Het boek zelf is zeker gedegen geschreven en er is wel degelijk onderzoek verricht maar de auteurs zijn zelf niet in Panama geweest wat eigenlijk wel apart is als je onderzoek doet over deze zaak. Ook verlenen beide families geen medewerking voor het schrijven van dit boek. Jammer genoeg blijft het onzeker wat er is gebeurd met Lisanne & Kris.

Drie maanden voordat Kris en Lisanne verdwenen, was ik zelf een tijdje in het vriendelijke plaatsje Boquete, ik verbleef net buiten het dorp en heb in de omgeving verschillende wandelingen gemaakt. Het nieuws rondom de verdwijning kan ik mij daarom nog goed herinneren, op tv zag ik beelden van plekken waar ik zelf korte tijd eerder was geweest en waar ik het erg naar mijn zin heb gehad. Maar toen er sensatiezucht ontstond, en er complottherorieën kwamen, ben ik volledig afgehaakt het nieuws rondom de verdwijning te volgen.
Ik kwam dit luisterboek tegen op de Storytel app en het maakte mij toch nieuwsgierig. Het eerste deel is ronduit slecht, het is slechts een verzameling van uitgeschreven tv fragmenten; complottheorieën en andere dingen die je via Google kunt vinden. De schrijvers zijn zelfs niet in Panama geweest.
Daarna wordt het beter, en bij vlagen zelfs interessant, als het politiedossier wordt overgenomen. Maar het is eigenlijk niet meer dan het overnemen van andermans werk, en er een eigen sausje (zonder toegevoegde waarde) over smeren. Het laatste deel van het boek, is vooral een herhaling van het voorgaande - zonder toegevoegde waarde.

Uitleg waarin alle mogelijke complottheorieën worden besproken en weerlegd. Op veel plekken zeer langdradig en onnodig technisch. Grote delen voelen slechts als een samenvatting van het NFI report. Het boek voelt onpersoonlijk vooral toen op het einde van het boek bleek dat de ouders van beide jonge vrouwen niet betrokken zijn/geen goedkeuring hebben gegeven. Ik begrijp de noodzaak van dit boek niet volledig. De conclusie is hetzelfde als die van het OM zo’n 10 jaar geleden. Al bij al jammer dat het zo’n droge verwoording is geworden.

Poeh, wat een moeilijk leesbaar boek.. Het verhaal van de meiden in Nederland goed gevolgd en met verbazing lees is dat de zoektocht op sommige vlakken zo chaotisch is geweest. Verschrikkelijk voor de ouders.
Zelf het pad 2 jaar geleden ook bewandeld, het monument mogen bekijken en even stil gestaan bij hen.
Helaas is dit boek niet wat ik er van had verwacht. Te rommelig. En eigenlijk ben ik meer benieuwd naar het verhaal van de familie.

I feel that the authors could have spent more time trying to recreate their version of the events, but overall the book is fine. If you are invested in the story of Kris and Lisanne, you won’t find many new details, though.

Wat mij het meest tegenstond aan dit boek is de hoeveelheid herhaling, het boek had makkelijk gehalveerd kunnen worden. Anderzijds komt het wel heel nauwkeurig over, het is duidelijk dat de auteurs hun best hebben gedaan zo gedetailleerd mogelijk dit droevige verhaal te vertellen en hebben hierbij ook veel respect getoond naar Kris en Lisanne en hun nabestaanden. Ik vond het een interessant boek om te lezen.

In 2014 verdwenen twee Nederlandse meiden, Kris Kremers en Lisanne Froon in de jungle van Boquete, Panama. Maanden was Nederland in de ban van hun verdwijning en het werd een bang afwachten voor de ouders. Hun verhaal greep mij persoonlijk erg aan. Ik was ongeveer even oud als Kris en Lisanne toen ook ik in Boquete verbleef in 2004. Net als hen logeerde ik bij een gastgezin en werkte ik als vrijwilliger in een opvang tehuis voor kinderen. El Pianista het pad waar ze verdwenen, was mij niet vreemd. 2014 zou bovendien het jaar worden waarin ik terug zou keren naar Panama, naar een grote reünie met alle andere vrijwilligers die ik er had leren kennen, maar door omstandigheden is dit niet kunnen doorgaan. Deze verdwijning was voor mij geen ver van mijn bed show meer: ik kende de stad, de mensen, had gewandeld langs hetzelfde pad waar Kris en Lisanne verdwenen, logeerde er ook in een gastgezin en deed er bovendien ook vrijwilligerswerk.
Na heel wat speurwerk werden enkele maanden na hun verdwijning menselijke resten gevonden die van Kris en Lisanne afkomstig zouden zijn. Ze waren in de jungle gestorven, maar hoe dit exact gebeurde wist men niet. Momenteel krioelt het op het internet met theorieën over hun verdwijning. Was het een complot, werden ze ontvoerd of vermoord? Of waren ze uiteindelijk dan toch verdwaald en was er helemaal geen kwaad opzet in het spel?
De laatste jaren is het moeilijk om correcte informatie te filteren uit de veelheid aan informatie en bronnen die zich op het World Wide Web bevinden, het is een echt kluwen geworden. Er zijn maar weinig betrouwbare bronnen terug te vinden en als leek is het best wel moeilijk om niet in de valkuil te trappen van sensatiebeluste media. Met Verloren in de jungle brengen Marja West en Jürgen Snoeren een true crime over de verdwijning en proberen ze antwoorden te vinden op de vraag wat er nu met Kris en Lisanne gebeurde. Hierbij weerleggen ze heel wat (sensatie)verhalen die rondgaan op het internet. Ze zullen deze niet alleen analyseren, maar doen ook een beroep op mensen die effectief meehielpen aan het onderzoek waaronder Betzaïda Pitti Cerrud de officier van justitie die de zaak onderzocht.
Het boek zal alle mogelijke scenario’s onder de loep nemen: een ongeluk, een misdaad en een complot. Stap voor stap analyseren Marja en Jürgen alle mogelijke theorieën en denkpistes. Hierbij zullen ze heel wat sensatienieuws en aannames de grond in boren omdat er gewoon niet voldoende bewijs voor werd geleverd. Doordat het voor mij zo herkenbaar was, maakt het voor mij duidelijk dat de auteurs zeer grondig te werk gegaan zijn. Verloren in de jungle bevat bovendien ook heel wat illustraties zoals foto’s, kaarten, tabellen, … die een nog duidelijker beeld weergeven van de gebeurtenissen.

Aan het einde van het boek formuleren ze een dappere conclusie. Dapper, want men heeft nog steeds geen uitsluitsel over wat er met de meiden gebeurde. Maar het besluit van Marja en Jürgen is duidelijk opgesteld en goed beargumenteerd.

3,5 stars because, pro-tip: don’t use Google Translate to translate your book and maybe have at least one person who’s fluent in English read through the translation before you publish it. The English edition is bad. It’s FULL of typos, mistakes, missing words and punctuation, extra words. There are plenty of phrases and expressions which must have been translated word for word from common and normal phrases in Dutch (a big translation no-no). While you (usually) get the meaning of the sentence, either the words themselves or the syntax frequently make little sense in English. It’s just not a well written book, no doubt in part due to the shoddy translation but it probably isn’t a masterpiece of writing in the original Dutch either.
Also, what the Hell’s peritonitis, an inflammation of the lining of the abdomen, got to do with a fragment of femur? Was it maybe supposed to be periostitis, an inflammation of the periosteum which attaches the bone to the muscle, as found later in the book, which makes significantly more sense in context? This is basic factual information which should not be subject to such mistakes. (Peritonitis shows up again out of nowhere in part 5, by the way, if anyone’s reading this review and has any power over correcting the many mistakes).
Nonetheless, it’s a quick, captivating, and easy read. It’s a book that anyone endlessly fascinated with the tragic story of Lisanne Froon and Kris Kremers can read for an extensive and detailed overview of what might have happened to them as well as all the investigative work surrounding them, both official, unofficial, and media-based. The content, based on the actual official documents of the investigations, is very interesting and presents the case in a very compelling way, adding information that is not necessarily available in the most common sources online as well as correcting some of the abundant misinformation which has been published and spread like wildfire.
Part 1 especially is a little bit messy and chaotic at times, with facts, theories, retellings from other (media) sources all a bit jumbled together and sometimes hard to distinguish from one another. There are also quite a few repetitions of the same things in multiple chapters. A couple more rounds of editing to reorder everything into a completely logical and well-flowing recounting would have been good.
Parts 3 to 5 are great in that regard though, very clear and easy to follow. I even feel like the English is somewhat better, which no doubt contributed to the increasing understanding. But they’re also the parts which are exactly what I was hoping for from this book. Those parts are strictly based on facts of the investigation as well as the methodical debunking of some misinformation. They do not intermingle wild theories, from locals, from overly eager and critical journalists, or from the wonderful world wide interwebs, nor thoughts and comments from everybody and their dog who’s supposedly witnessed something or knows something, nor any information all the dubiously trustworthy “sources” have.
Part 2 is teetering somewhere in between, very well constructed at times, occasionally still as messy as the Panamanian jungle.
But on the whole, I think it did a good job of presenting the case, the theories, the human and media frenzy about these two young women, and ultimately detailing what I believe to be the most reasonable and probable conclusion about what most likely happened.
Fact is, we’ll sadly more than likely never know for sure what happened to Lisanne and Kris, and there will always be people who believe it was a tragic situation of getting lost and injured in a horribly hostile place as concluded in this book, while others will forever remain convinced there was foul play at hand. Either way, I wish them to rest in peace and hope that their families and loved ones are able to find some closure and peace themselves, in spite of this horrible loss and the lack of certainty.

I have read a lot about Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon and this book is, by far, the most objective and thorough account I've seen of the case. Although I was surprised at the start of the book that the authors had not travelled to Panama to see any of the evidence for themselves, or to interview any of the witnesses, it is clear that they did an incredible amount of research and remote interviews, and were not subject to the same level of bias and rumour which most writers on the topic seem to succumb to. They gathered a huge number of first hand accounts, and gained access to the actual police files, something which undoubtedly gave them a broader swathe of data to consider than most online.
I became frustrated that myself, and others, would read the various stories and theories posted by armchair detectives without seeking the source material and getting swept up in the mystery. For what it's worth, as soon as I heard about the case I had presumed the girls had had an unfortunate accident and died after several days lost in the jungle, but I am annoyed that I inadvertently promoted half-brained theories through engaging in the content. What struck me the most in reading about Lisanne and Kris is that most people just seem interested in having a "good story" and expound graphic and gruesome scenarios while forgetting that these were two young women in the prime of their life. They were daughters, sisters, friends. They had gone for the trip of a lifetime, and no matter what happened to them it is devastating to the girls, their friends, families and even the community of Boquete. I think it would be different if there was really any kind of evidence beyond the obvious and people really were trying to find out what happened in order to solve a horrific crime, but it just feels like sensationalism and smut.
I was impressed by the thoroughness of Snoeren and West's research and how they were unbiased in their presentation of the facts. They didn't discount the more unusual theories for the disappearance of the girls, nor did they discount the more basic ideas and those which would suit the theory of Occam's razor. They were unabashed in their outlining of the facts and the evidence from the police file. I could go into so much detail about the false facts presented in the media but I would recommend that you instead read the book by Snoeren and West. The one piece of information I was so so shocked by that has been spread in the media was that the piece of skin found with some of the bones belonged to one of the girls - it wasn't even human! And yet it's been used as proof of a nefarious ending and evidence that the women were murdered, buried, and their remains deposited somewhere else. I think it's immoral how these pieces of incorrect information have been shared around and used to promote certain theories, for which there appear to be no basis in fact.
In conclusion, if you're interested in this case (or even if you're not, it might actually better if you're not already well versed in the case as you may find it more interesting) then I would really recommend this and encourage you to read this book and to put down anything written by so-called journalists online. However, it must be said that the translation of the book is poor and it is littered with spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, hence the 4 stars rather than 5.
