Arthur Pendragon, heir apparent to the throne of Camelot, approaches his sixteenth birthday with dread. The chains of his heritage, chafe. He wishes nothing more than to be a regular youth, free to seek and pursue the pleasures of young love. But the object of his affection is a love forbidden by the church, the true power behind the throne of Camelot. With the power to set up future kings and tear them down, Arthur knows that to pursue a love interest with a man will cost him the throne, and possibly his life. When a mysterious object of magic is stolen from a secure vault in the depths of the armoury, Arthur is tasked with hunting down the thief and stopping the horror of it being unleashed on Camelot. I am a real sucker for tales about King Arthur and his Knights, so I really enjoyed reading this book especially as it depicts such an original take on the usual story. I love that Arthur is depicted as being in love with Lancelot and the love triangle makes better sense than the tale usually told of the betrayal of Arthur by his best friend and loyal knight, and his beautiful wife. This tale is one of vengeance enacted by a sorceress of the druids, who had been wiped out so cruelly, many burnt at the stake for using magic when Christianity arrived in Avalon and the Pendragon Kings bowed their knees and heads to the church. Nimue and her daughter Simone had personally suffered at the hands of the church and now wanted to make King Uther and his only son Arthur, the heir apparent suffer too. Simone created a bone dragon of magic and was intent on wiping out villages till she got to Camelot itself. However she was not mindful of Merlin and his being in Arthur’s life. Merlin though still a fledgling was very strong in his magical powers already, so she found a battle on her hands that she was not quite prepared for. I love that Arthur accepted Merlin and his use of magic even though this could have cost them both their lives in the court of the intolerant King Uther. I really like that Arthur is doing so many things that go against the dictates of the church and the times he was living in, tackling the evil of the church head on showed great courage. I really did not wish this book to end as I got great pleasure from reading the fast paced adventure full of magic and dragons, courage and loyalty as well as betrayal and a power struggle on the part of Morgana, and look forward to book 2.

This author can really write a story! A Kingdom with a Prince that thought religion was stupid but his father the King had different ideas. The King wanted Prince Authur to get a wife rather he wanted one of not but Authur had eyes for someone else. Magic was outlawed and people killed was by fire. Between the church telling his Father what to do, the church also took small boys to grow in the church. A boy the church took belonged to a Witch and things went on and he was killed. The Witch retaliated and made a Dragon out of bones and went after the people, the King, Prince and the towns. Marlin and his mom moved into town as a beer maker and became friends with Prince Authur and was trying to kill the dragon. Stay tuned for book 2!

Interesting take on the King Arthur legend. I love seeing how different authors handle the same story and this one puts a unique spin on it.
