Take a journey through the history and culture of the Bible with the only study Bible that unfolds in historical order. The NKJV Chronological Study Bible presents Scripture in chronological order—the order in which the events happened—with notes, articles, and full-color graphics that connect the reader to the history and culture of biblical times. Starting with creation and moving through God’s people in the Old Testament, the life of Jesus and the birth of the church, this Bible provides a vivid picture of God’s work throughout history. Perfect for readers regardless of where they are in their faith journey, the Chronological Study Bible is a great study resource to not only better understand the text but to also help you experience those moments in fresh, new ways. I finally conquered the Holy Mountain! For years, I had eaten around the edges of this project but always got bogged down in the Old Testament. Finally, when I discovered this chronological Bible with a 365 day reading plan, I finally found the motivation I needed to read this epic as one continuous story written by countless authors over 1200 years. The New King James translation is my favorite given the poetic meter and word choice that you’ll instantly recognize from the most famous Bible verses (which I find lose their potency in more literal translations like the NRSV). Because this was a historical Bible, I also learned a ton about the history of each epoch, especially the cultures and religions of the ancient near east that inspired the most famous Bible stories. Perhaps my favorite part that finally made the Bible readable was the introductory sections to each chapter explaining who wrote each book and why (hint: it wasn’t Moses), setting each story in its appropriate historical setting. For some reason, that approach really resonated with me and helped me to finally understand some of the most difficult passages in the Bible as well as shedding light on those I only thought I understood previously. I anticipate I’ll come back to this book again and again as a vital reference tool.
This study Bible adds important historical and cultural context which enables us to better understand parts of the Bible that are more challenging to grasp than others. In general, however, I recommend reading any Bible (my favorite is the NLT). We need to do what Scripture tells us which is to dig into the Word every day, and ask God to help us understand it. We should not rely on someone to interpret it for us. In particular, if you have not read the entire Bible before, at least tackle the New Testament (testament means “covenant”) which explains the new covenant made between Jesus and us and replaces the old covenant (testament) made between God, Moses, and the Israelites. Once we understand what the new covenant is—love is the key—and we obey the Lord by adhering to the covenant (not breaking it like the Israelites did—and paid with their lives), it will change the way you think about literally everything. I just completed reading the Bible all the way through for my fifth time, and every time I read it, God reveals more to me, helping me to better understand His Word. Love and peace to you all.
This is a great Bible when you're studying because it gives so much more extra information. About the cultural beliefs/history during this time and the significance of what's currently happening in that chapter of the bible. I love this Bible and reference to it often when I'm studying or something stands out to me that I don't understand in my other Bible. I also recommend getting The Bible Recap book by Tara-Leigh Cobble. She has such amazing insight and helps you truly understand what's happening in the Bible at that moment. Those 2 books together plus my journal Bible are perfect for me and my daily walk and relationship with Jesus :)
The Bible itself was fantastic. However, the timelines in the beginning claim the world is tens of thousands of years old when biblically that is not true.
