A STORY OF A HERO, FATHER, GRANDFATHER, FRIEND, EMPLOYER, A MAN'S MAN WITH GRIT, WHO IS RESPECTED & LOVED BY ALL
Old Dogs (Lucky Five) by Ron Schwab is a very well written book that takes place in Texas during 1875. It's a tell of a man named Jack Wills who in his seventies finds himself putting his life and those who more than employees and friends on his ranch and freight transport company he owns, their all part of his family.
Jack takes in those who are down and out and gives them the chance to help themselves by working hard and living to their full potential no matter their race or station in life. His son Jordy was taken in as a ten year old orphan, raised as if he was Jack's own son. Jack treats everyone with respect, and in return, everyone loves and respects him.
Jack's best friend is a stray dog named Thor who showed up during a lightning storm. The bond between Jack and Thor is one that will touch your heart in only the way a love and friendship of a man or woman and a loyal loving dog can bring. They each save each other's lives, are inseparable, and have a friendship that lasts to the end.
This Western action book is one that will keep you glued to the pages to see what happens next. It will make you laugh at times and bring tears to your eyes at other times.
This book defines what a true hero is in all ways. The kindness showed to others, the love and respect of Jack's family, friends, neighbors, employees, and everyone in his community sets an example of how we should all strive for.
Quotes:
"Plumb week north of the ears when the two men fussed."
"It is strange how every day we make what seems an insignificant decision at the time or take a little turn that changes the course of our lives and maybe those of countless others. And we don't know---and they don't either---what event triggered it all."
"A man who constantly reminded others of his own brilliance generally came up short when it came to brains."
"The only thing he won't excuse is whining about the cards life has dealt you. He would say get off your ass and find a different game or learn how to win at the one you are playing."
"Hate's not a good burden to carry. Closes your mind to possibilities."
"Self-responsibility. Persistence. Don't count on somebody else to blaze your trail through life no matter how tough it gets."
"Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment."
I really enjoyed this book and plan to start reading the next book in this series "Day of the Dog" shortly. I, too, hope you will enjoy this book as much as I did. I highly recommend this book to all.
Yep, I was swayed by the overwhelming number of five-star reviews. Upon finishing, I can only conclude that either the author has a LOT OF "FRIENDS," or everyone else is seeing something I didn't.
Granted, most of the westerns I've read have been by REALLY GOOD authors like Elmore Leonard, Pete Dexter, and Larry McMurtry, so naturally, this one pales by comparison. But even allowing for that, this author's writing style is amateurish. The dialogue is awkward. There are few descriptive passages, so he never really establishes a sense of time and place; it didn't seem like historical fiction. And, there is far too much backstory given on minor characters, but not enough about the main (and only, as far as I'm concerned), interesting character. Perhaps a good editor could have whittled this one down to a taut short story, but as a novel, it plods along like an old nag.
A solid western with unforgettable characters and an impressive story line. Lots of romance as well as great adventure. Highly recommended. It won the Peacemaker Award for the best novel of frontier or western fiction. The writing was sturdy and straightforward, unsensational. It didn’t need to be more than that because sensational doesn’t always work 🐎
Sometimes it is hard to find a book which is a good pleasant read. One that is fun, comfortable and tells a real lifelike story. This is such a story. Set in the old west with real likeable people who make mistakes and live real lives, with real stories. These pages have good guys, bad guys, Indians and cowboys, life and death. This reader will be looking for more by this author!
THE BEST WESTERN BOOK THAT I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED BEFORE!
This Western Story is the BEST I have ever experienced! Yes ... Experienced! I have Laughed (out loud) with Them, Cried (out loud) with Them and Rode The Trails With Them! Thank You Ron Schwab For A Great Read! I can't wait to read more of Your Stories!! I AM FOLLOWING YOU SIR!!
Wow one of the best reads I have had you will cry and laugh and it will wake you up and see time is sort live for today don’t waste a day on things that don’t matter.
Would definitely recommend ⭐️⭐️ One of the best I have read lately, cried the whole last chapter. Felt so sorry for Thor then when he died it was totally heartbreaking 💔 Will definitely read the next one.If call could up it to a 6 star ⭐️ I would. Absolutely loved Jack, couldn’t stand it when he died, couldn’t believe how Tess took his death. Absolutely broke my heart and I don’t cry easy…😢 Tweety 🦜🦜
The Old Dogs in the title refer to Jack and Rudy, a pair of aging and retired Texas Rangers now ranchers, and Thor, a loyal and much loved dog. A young woman claiming to be Jack’s granddaughter shows up out of the blue asking Jack to help recover her herd of horses that that been rustled by hostile Comancheros. Jack, unaware that he even has any offspring, is at first shocked and then inspired to come out of retirement for one last dangerous mission to recover the stolen horses. This mission drives the plot but is really secondary to the themes of growing old and love of family, friends, and dog. Truly a wonderful book that packs an emotional punch, especially I think, for men of a certain age - like me. One of the best Westerns that I’ve read in a while and highly recommended. Five stars.
A tough old Texas Ranger and his dog rode on one last night with Comencheros before easing into his good night.
Jack T. Wills served Texas as a Ranger and never backed up or backed down. In a HEA family western, family and don't the right thing counted for everything. A well-written tale with lots of action and two different love stories.
Jack Wills owns the Lucky 5 ranch. At 70, he has seen plenty of action and should be ready to just settle down. A woman arrives at his ranch claiming to be his granddaughter. Pretty good trick since he had no kids that he knew of making having a grandkid a bit of a challenge. She convinces him that it is indeed possible. She runs a ranch that has had a whole string of horses stolen by Comancheros. Jack is determined to get them back for her, even though his men would be well outnumbered. Just a really excellent read.
My husband loved this book and wanted me to read it. I’m not a fan of westerns, but I told him I would give it a try. It was a nice story. My husband has a new favorite author now, and has read three more of his books in the past two weeks. If you enjoy westerns, you will enjoy this book.
Rarely do I find a story that grabs my attention like this one did. I read 3 to 4 books a week and figure I know a good story when I read one. Even better is the lack of misspelled words, missing words, improper sentence construction and the mistakes that amateur writers make and don't bother to correct. My only complaint is the book is a bit short as I was enjoying the characters and wanted to get to know them better. I'll be reading more of Mr Schwab's offerings.
I won't make this review into a spoiler. I must say that this book is unusual in its treatment of the protagonists. A serious western written to include a romantic side. Highly recommended.
When I was just a young boy, growing up on the family farms, I rode the range with Zane Grey, Louis L’Amour, Elmer Kelton, Ned Buntline, and Owen Wister. I was just eight years old when I fell in love with the old west and the cowboy way and all those authors wrote tales that brought it to life for me. Very few modern writers can spin an old western yarn the way those worthies did. Ron Schwab is one of those very few. Ron Schwab is most definitely someone worthy to ride the river with.
The saga of the Old Dogs kicks off when a beautiful young woman rides onto the Lucky Five ranch, seeking help in recovering her horses that were stolen by the Comancheros. The woman presents herself to Jack Wills, the owner of the Lucky Five, as being his granddaughter, Sierra Wills. At first, Jack thought the girl was trying to scam him because he didn’t even know that his wife had been pregnant when she left him. But too many things Sierra told him rang true, and it wasn’t long before he believed her and accepted her into his family on the Lucky Five.
At seventy, Jack, as well as most of his friends and ranch hands, were all ‘old dogs’, but was ready to track down the Comancheros gang and recover his granddaughter’s horses. Being an ex-Texas Ranger, he knew the dangers that he was riding into and the dangers that he was asking his ranch hands and friends to ride into with him. They were not only Jack’s friends, but as his employees, they rode for the brand, so not riding with him was never an option. Many of them had also been Rangers and/or Buffalo Soldiers and loved a good dustup. Sierra was Jack’s granddaughter and refused to stay behind, safe, and out of harm’s way. She rode right into harm’s way with her grandfather and all the other men.
Like with all the great western yarns, there are romances and gun smoke. There’s the romance between Jack and Tess Wyman, a neighbor rancher who Jack had been courting for years. Jack planned on asking her to marry him when he returned. There’s the blossoming romance between Sierra and the young man, Jordy, that Jack took in as a boy after they killed his parents, and raised him as his own son.
This is an action-packed, page-turner that keeps you glued to the edge of your seat from the first page to the last page. Will Jack and his crew recover Sierra’s stolen horses from the Comancheros? Will Jack return to marry Tess? Will Jordan and Sierra become a couple? Will they marry? Go read the book. Old Dogs is proof of why Ron Schwab is an award-winning western author.
Mr. Schwab certainly outdid himself with this outstanding story of Jack Willis and his family of outstanding ranch family! This ongoing compilations of unending pleasurable experiences are unsurpassed in their commanding assignments from beginning to end!
Most definitely five stars worthy, as this "family" of outstanding dedicated group of individuals will definitely touch your heartstrings immediately and never lets go until the final paragraph has been absorbed! Jack doesn't have ranch hands or employees of his freight wagons, as they are extended family members! Some of the most compelling and heartwarming, storylines I have had the opportunity to follow! The ongoing hardships only tends to motivate anyone's heartstrings to continue reading each new adventure until the final paragraph has been absorbed! Too, the Author's outstanding character selections were unsurpassed in their commanding assignments throughout these series of unending exciting heartwarming episodes! Hated to read the last paragraph as it has been awhile since I have read such a compelling western folklore extravaganza as this one! Definitely recommend this compassionately motivated masterpiece to everyone but especially to you non-western fanatics, as I assure you to be completely engrossed immediately and your undivided attention will never waned from beginning to end. All of you western addicted fanatics will definitely be completely mesmerized from beginning to end! Anyone not reading this exceptionally compelling rendition of realistic old American western folklore adventures will definitely be the loser!!!😃
OLD DOGS by Ron Schwab is a western novel that is based on Jack, a lifelong bachelor who along with partner Rudy have been long respected and prosperous owners of a large ranching operation.
Jordy is Jack’s adopted son, who we eventually learn more about and how he came into Jack (and Rudy’s) life and how he came to be the most trusted and reliable hand on the ranch.
Sierra is the young woman who arrives unexpectedly with the shocking assertion that Jack is her grandfather, which he believes is impossible, but information she provides eventually makes her story believable and she is welcomed to stay at the ranch.
Eventually Sierra reveals why she has arrived with the news (that she has known for quite some time), and has an ulterior motive, which involves a rescue mission into an extremely dangerous situation that Jack agrees to that places all of the lives of everyone involved in harm’s way.
Can Jack and his associates succeed in the challenge he’s agreed to, or is he foolish to think that he and the others can succeed?
Great western novel that would’ve been better suited to a series then taking place in one novel as it could’ve been stretched out over multiple books, although saying this only confirms the quality of this book and how enjoyable I found it to be.
This was a wonderful, fun, touching story. Its about 2 old men and their old dog and some adventures in their old age. The more I read the more I wanted to read to see what happened next. I couldn't hardly put the book down. It was a sweet love story between all the characters. It centered around the main character Jack and his dog Thor. But he had a best friend, and a foster child he raised to manhood and various other characters who worked for him in different capacities. He found out he had a granddaughter he never knew and a son he knew nothing about. It becomes a love story in many ways that will tug at your heart and make you cry. I enjoyed this book very much and would like to read more like it. I am used to reading murder mysteries, paranormal romance, thrillers, and things that are very different from this book. It warmed my heart and made me want more. I hated when it ended. I wanted to know what happened afterward to the people as it continued in time. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about the old west.
What a neat story. Ex Texas Ranger Jack Willis is caught by surprise when a mysterious young lady rides up to his ranch home and tells him she is is granddaughter. Sierra Willis not only convinces Jack she indeed is the granddaughter he didn’t know he had but appeal to him to help her recover her stolen horse herd. Jack, Sierra and his chosen wranglers soon on on the way west to do a seemly impossible task of taking back Sierra’s horses from a much larger group of bandits called Comancheros. It tuns out to be a successful venture except Jack is wounded and although he makes it home before he dies he doesn’t get to marry his sweetheart. There is a love affair between Sierra and Jacks adopted son Jordy. This book has sad moments and glad moments and that’s what makes it such a good book if you like westerns, this is a must read.
Schwab’s story is set in western Texas on a huge ranch owned by a retired Texas Ranger, Jack, who along with a collection of mis-fits successfully manages everything. An old friend named Rudy helps manage the spread along with, Jordy, a young man who is training to be the Manager but began life as an orphan Jack simply ‘took in’. Jack, Rudy and an old dog named Thor are the 3 ‘old dogs’ giving the book its title. Schwab delivers a fast pace throughout the book. Indians are friends & Enemies. New friends are found and a few old ones are lost. Jack & Jordy find the love of their life. The ending is unexpected and delightful.
A Long, but still a pleasant Western One that might be described a s cozy western since things went well throughout, in the long run of the events. And they were long. The characters are well drawn around this benevolent patriarch whom everybody loves. Thor, the dog, however, is the real hero of the piece. There are surprises for him and others that I will not spoil by divulging. The climax would be the attack on the Comancheros holed up in their canyon. Not an attack that an understrength attacking might might ordinarily contemplate pursuing from Studebaker wagons- but it worked. I enjoyed the read, although I did not find it exceptional or enjoyable enough to want to read another by this author. But that is me and my opinion. We are all different, after all.
Another great book by Ron Schwab. A great story line with lots of action, and great depiction of a Western legend. A beautiful love story and the inclusion of a fine dog as on of the main characters. I truly enjoyed the book and couldn’t stop reading until the beautiful ending. I highly recommend this book and compliment the author Ron Schwab on another action packed Western.
I have read all Ron Schwab with a couple excepted and I have them. Ron is an exceptional writer, interesting, with remarkable characters. The plots are varied but hang together giving more than just one book although each could stand alone, it's great to read in sequence, very satisfying. I recommend any reader interested in adventure, romance and the west to read any and all of Ron Schwab's books.
This is a very compelling book that I hated to put down and was sad to finish. It’s an innocent story of a generous man and his dog. A man that was a visionary, who touched the lives of all who knew him. A book of what ifs, that eventually resolve themselves. The ending leaves you with a heavy heart and a smile on your face. I would love to know, or be like Jack Wills. Certainly not a man of his times.
Ron does it again. As usual, there's a compelling storyline with interesting characters, action and a little romance. I always appreciate his development of secondary characters both animal (Thor) and human (Rudy). There are an abundance of great characters enriched with his excellent use of dialogue. While this could be a stand-alone, I hope he will revisit these characters.
I loved this book, between the horses, the grumpy old men, a faithful old dog and a incredibly good storyline it was perfect! Well, almost, I shed a tear or two for Jack and his old dog even as the beautiful ending went by. Loved how the author was able to take you into that back country and make you feel as if you knew it! Well done!
I liked the story very much, and I liked the author's writing style. The premise intrigued me and it delivered in a most satisfying way. You always need young people interwoven into the plot, you know,-to give it the story a little sexual excitement that we all remembered. But the old guys, the old dogs, is what carried the story and did it so well! My hat is off to author Ron Schwab for a damn good story!
Lived to be a grandpa but never stopped being a man. Loved many deeply. Showed true friendship and did not discriminate. Was an alpha who drew outcast to him, encouraged them to shine with grit and determination and won their loyalty in the process. He was cheated of his son but never cheated anyone. Larger than life, yet human. Highly recommended for all readers. Loved it.
