Our daughter loved it. She said it was nice to see a smart character experiences the pressure of the adults’ expectations and his peers’ seeing him as “the smart kid”. I think she felt understood as she was reading it. She also giggled out loud many times which made our hearts happy!

Fun book, but more elementary than middle school.

This book is told from Tyrell's imaginary podcast as he narrates his life as he starts 6th grade, including trying out for the school show. With YouTube, TikTok, and podcasts being so popular, it seems very believable that a kid would have a pretend podcast and thinks everyone wants to hear what he has to share. It's a lot of big paragraphs with stream of consciousness that reads fast with breaks with comic-style scenes with other people using speech bubbles. Tyrell's mom is a social worker, and his dad is a bus driver, and neither profession is common in children's literature, so it was nice to see, especially because it's mentioned in the story as he accompanies each parent to work. There was one instance of the incorrect use of then vs. than, which personally irked me. The short length and illustrated format is kinda at odds with the 6th grade character, but this could be a good book for high/low, especially with a 770 Lexile. For fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

10/23/2022 ~ Tyrell uses an internal "podcast" format to tell us about his last year of elementary school (6th grade). The episodes are chronological through the first semester. The beginning of the book dragged for me, because there was no clear plot, simply introductions and a recount of Tyrell's days.

Readers who enjoy Tyrell's "voice" and his goofy friend Boogie may connect with this book. However, those who want more action/plot will probably abandon the book after a few chapters. I did appreciate the introspection and reflection that Tyrell showed in later parts of the book.

I will add this book to my elementary collection, and I'm looking forward to hearing readers' feedback.

The Tyrell Show: Season One is an engaging fiction book. Author Miles Grose merges graphic and narrative styles in telling the story of Tyrell Edwards. Tyrell has a podcast in which he shares episodes of his life with readers through his mind. It's remarkably interesting how Grose uses Tyrell's mind as the platform for the podcast.

Tyrek introduces his family, best friend Boogie, school nemesis Shelly, and other interesting characters throughout the podcast episodes. The story is realistic and humorous. The Tyrell Show caters to upper elementary and early middle grades. Judging by the size of the book, cover art, and illustrations, I assumed that the book was geared toward second and third graders. I enjoyed reading season one of this chapter book series. Kudos to Miles Grose for capturing positive images of Black family life and adolescence.

I got to read this as an ARC with my kids - they loved the concept of the podcast as a storytelling method. They both liked the book: they thought it was funny and a good mix of comic and chapter book. It centers around Tyrell, who takes us through his last year in Elementary school. He deals with a lot of changes in Grade 6 between being nervous about a school play, a friend moving, dealing with siblings, and pet ownership! There's lessons in empathy, resilience, and friendship - I'd recommend it for Grades 3&up.

2 stars (it was okay)

There were some parts that I really enjoyed like Tyrell's lesson about empathy but overall I was not a fan.
First, Tyrell is supposed to be in 6th grade but he reads so young. Like he reminded me of Junie B. Jones...
I thought the fake podcast concept was kind of weird. I liked the comics but there were some parts where it seemed like some panels were missing and one time where the text talked about the comic scene before the comic happened.
So yea, I will not be continuing the series.

I really wish that there was an audiobook because I would have loved to have heard Tyrell's voice instead of just reading it.

Best storyline ever, I got attached to the characters and could relate to tyrell and boogie, and this is a spoiler but when Tyrell and Boogie stopped talking to each other I felt it, I almost cried.
