If you know anything about African Spirituality you know the importance of cultural inheritance within the practice. After 6 pages something felt very off about this book. There were small inconsistencies with the language that made me uncomfortable. These are usually mistakes that novices make, not experts writing a book. Also racism... "A Chinese, a Japanese, and a Korean person may look alike, but they're very different. In their beliefs, languages, and manner of interaction, you can easily determine who is who."
I am researching the Orishas to connect with my ancestors. This is not that book.
As a follower of Orixa, I found this book to be a bit intimidating to anyone exploring coming to the religion or simply wanting to learn more about Orixa. It gives a lot of detail on various Orixa, which is really through and great; hut it also reads in a way that they are entities to be feared and are easily offended. I work with a total of 13 Orixa on a very, very regular basis (Nana, Oxossi, Oshun, Yemaya, Chango, Elegua, Ogun, Aje, Oya, Orula, Oxala, Osain and Obba) and I have NEVER felt fearful of any form of punishment or vengeance from any of them. To me, they are my friends, my counsel, my guardians and a total and complete guiding force in my life. I can’t imagine why anyone would feel they would punish you for offering the wrong food or getting their day of the week wrong, especially when your efforts are genuine and sincere and are not done as a form of blatant disrespect. For anyone who is learning about Orixa and considering invoking their presence into your life, it is my sincere wish that you know they are kind, loving and benevolent spirits that are always willing to help you.
If you're seeking a fascinating journey into the world of Orishas, look no further than "Orishas" by Mari Silva. This incredible book is a treasure trove of knowledge, offering a quick and comprehensive understanding of the Orishas and their origins.
From the very first page, I was captivated by the captivating storytelling and the author's ability to transport me to the mystical realm of the Orishas. The book expertly combines rich historical context with engaging narratives, making it a perfect choice for both beginners and those hungry for more knowledge.
Mari Silva's writing style is both informative and accessible, making complex concepts easy to grasp. I found myself immersed in the vivid descriptions of each Orisha, their divine attributes, and their significance in Afro-Caribbean religions. It was truly a delight to learn about their roles, rituals, and cultural importance.
What sets "Orishas" apart is its ability to spark curiosity and ignite a desire for further exploration. As I turned each page, I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder and awe for these powerful spiritual beings. The book left me yearning for more, eager to delve deeper into the world of Orishas and their sacred traditions.
I wholeheartedly recommend "Orishas" to anyone seeking a concise yet comprehensive introduction to the Orishas. Mari Silva's passion and knowledge shine through every word, making this book an absolute must-read. I eagerly await more literary gems from this talented author.
Mari Silva attempts to introduce readers to the world of Orishas, but it falls short in several key areas. The book offers a surface-level overview that seems more focused on broad strokes than on respecting the depth and nuances of cultural inheritance and closed practices. Unfortunately, it glosses over the significance of these aspects, which are crucial for a genuine understanding of Yoruba, Santeria, and Voodoo traditions.
Moreover, the book is marred by subtle racism and sexism, which are evident throughout its pages. The language used often feels disconnected and inadequate for conveying the richness of the subject matter. While this text might serve as a preliminary introduction, it is essential to approach it with caution. For a more respectful and thorough understanding, consulting a mentor or priest within the tradition is highly recommended.
I think the book gave great explanation about the Orishas; but not only about the main Orisha's, they explained if they're white or dark Orishas and categorized them. What I also liked about the book is that they explained about the different divinations that go side-by-side with the Odu Ifa. This helps piece everything together.
