Power always has a price.

Arden Finch has claimed her place in North Carolina's Otherside community, but not everyone is happy about it. The elves can't allow an elemental to rule as Arbiter and they'll stop at nothing to take Arden down.

To make matters worse, an old flame is back in town with big ambitions and bigger demands. The mundane police departments are reviewing unusual cases in light of the Reveal, adding even more problems. And with the Darkwatch after her as well, Arden must make tough choices about who—and what—she is now.

Survival will have her pushing her powers and relationships to the brink, with the gods watching for any weakness ahead of the Wild Hunt. Success will carry a price Arden never reckoned on.

Edit (3/22/23): I was taking this off my Kindle device and I guess I did finish it. I just forgot all about it. I skimmed the last few pages and yep, it was all about the bond and I stand by what I wrote. I hate the bond.

I think I never actually finished this one? It shows up as 94% on my Kindle and I do remember I was reading it prior to going on vacation and kind of being done with it. If memory serves me correctly, I think I was considering DNFing, but I was so near the end I wanted to white-knuckle it... but then I went on vacation and forgot. lol.

You know, I was pretty meh about this series from the beginning. I kept reading because I found the relationship between Arden and Troy intriguing and wanted to see how it developed. In this book they finally consummate their relationship, but I didn't like the execution. The problem I had was the double bond issue. I'm not a fan of bonds, especially when used to perpetuate romance between two characters. It takes the free will out of the development of their feelings and I find it a lazy way to bring characters together. Why can't they just be together because they love and respect one another? I had the same issue with Moon Touched, but I could forgive that one because the romantic couple there were not bonded and the absence of a bond is shown as an obstacle they must overcome to be together.

But here... it's just boring. It made a once-interesting couple perfectly boring and the plot was already not interesting to me anyway. I wanted to like this one, but ultimately, I couldn't give enough of a damn to even read the climax.

The first thing I have to say is a big wow. The fourth book of "Shadows of the Otherside" does NOT disappoint. I've been reading and adoring Whitney's series, and I ended up reading this book in two days (would have in one had I not been distracted a couple times). That's just how much I love the world built here, and how beautiful the writer voice is.

The saga continues and just like every book that came before it, "Ebon Rebellion" enhanced the series to make it more glorious. It's tough to figure out which book from the series is my favorite, but that's because they keep getting better and better. Arden is an AMAZING protagonist, someone who has grown so much and is wonderfully powerful. I would like to see more protagonists like her. Honestly, though, all of the characters here were so well written.

BELOW ARE SPOILERS!
*****
Alrighty, time to get into my thoughts on particular parts. I'll save my favorite thread of the story for last, because that will be a rather thick paragraph. I might not get to every thought off of the top of my head, but these are definitely the key points.

First, I love the realism woven into this story. As I said in my last review, I think it's very important for readers to pay attention to what Whitney is trying to say, and draw the parallels between this version of Earth and our version of Earth. Especially readers like me, who have an advantage in life. This book has a wonderful way of putting things into perspective and hitting an understanding. Especially with the riots and how people like vampires weren't even seen as people. The scenes at the police station really solidified this as well. There were also clever metaphors and connections to life with it.

The werewolves are a 'charm' as always. I did actually love what came up from Vikki & Ana though, and I hope their love comes through. I thought that was very sweet, but I like how the cats both respected that and wanted to rightfully hold their ground with their decisions.

The second Reveal was awesome, and I couldn't help but squee over Troy's part. Though Vikki's shifting was awesome, I love her wolf form. And Sarah demonstrating the life-part of magic! All in all, super neat.

Maria was a charm, as usual. I love how she doesn't push, but seems to rely on Arden and accepts that. The defeat of the vampires from other parts of the United States was awesome. I wonder what came of them, actually, since they didn't die. I thought they did at that part until Arden asked and it was confirmed otherwise.

DUKE! That lovely djinn came through! I've loved Duke ever since he was introduce and the 'laughter in his eyes'. It made me SO SAD when he reacted that way to Grimm's death, because to me, Grimm deserved it. So when he finally came around in this book, I felt so utterly happy! I am so eager to see his story continue as well.

Zanna, a charm. I loved learning a bit more about fae lore! I can't wait to see more with that regard. But Zanna is so wise and actually helped Arden come to some realization. Wonderfully written character, as usual.

Noah was neat, and I still wonder if that hint of attraction toward Doc Mike earlier in the series will come to fruition, or if it's just me seeing things.

The gods depicted here are so neat. Neith is frightening, as she should be. Mixcoatl's design is just so awesome. I even saw Father Odin's ravens there, hah! What is he up to? The scoundrel. But yes, I'm really looking forward to see whether or not Arden can stave off this Wild Hunt. Definitely predicting she's going to come through. Oh yes! The god in the crossroads with the popcorn is super cool too. I wonder what he's going to ask for in return for the favor... I doubt it'll be something as simple as a popcorn machine.

Oh right, Allegra and Iago were awesome (yes I say that a lot.) But gods damn Allegra! Twice! Twice! Aaaa, I had to take back a "OH WHOEVER THAT IS MUST DIE" comment during the you-know-what-I'm-referring-to part. (caught that live in my commentary in highlights).

Before I get into the final statements off the top of my head, I want to say I LOVE elf lore here, especially those teeth. Though, it's no surprise that I love sharp, pointy teeth. Especially how Troy used them on Arden... and speaking of which. WOW! I predicted the ship in the second book, and doubted myself because "Nah I always come up with the enemies to lovers ship, I'm too obsessed with that sort of thing". It's the type of ship I favor the most, and love the most. Especially written well, and Whitney did SUCH a good job with it. I could gush all day long about this ship, and how satisfying it was. It took four books to get here and DAMN was it worth it. This is how to write a romance properly, I feel. Slow burn is the best way to go, not to mention how legitimately caring Troy is toward Arden to give up all of that. Poor fellow got tortured, but he came through strong as always. He was so patient and gave Arden the space when she needed. He put Arden first, and that was beautiful. But Arden cared about him as well, which was super wonderful to see.

Oh yeah, and we all know I utterly hate Roman, but that's a given. I hated him even more in this book. He's a selfish, terrible person, and that was evident as the series went on.

*****
Arden, as expected, was amazing in this book, and seeing her grow more tough was amazing. I really love how she no longer lets people walk all over her, and I really love how she took charge. Everything building in this series came to a beautiful fruition.

I would give more than five stars if I could. Immaculate world building, Characters that I simply adore and care deeply about, wonderful writer's voice, everything. This series does not disappoint. I don't usually binge-read these days, but I did for this book, because I honestly could not put it down. After somewhat of a bad week, this was a true treat.

Thank you so much for the wonderful series. I highly recommend "Shadows of the Otherside", as it's one of the best urban fantasy series I've ever read.

I'd love to see this on the big screen! Can't wait for the next book!

(See my notes and highlights for specific reactions. Little minor tidbits as I read.)

Ebon Rebellion is the 4th book in the Shadows of Otherside series, a NA urban fantasy series! The 4th book has become one of my favorites in the series, spoilers below if you haven't read the previous books!

Arden is now settling in her new position as the leader of the alliance. She has discovered that not only she is a primordial elemental, but also that she has a tragic family past that might a affect everything in her future; as the Queen of house Solaris. The human society is in chaos after the vampire reveal, with riots and protests both in favor and against the vamps across the streets.

Arden must move fast to keep the Alliance united and the rest of the reveal going smoothly, with Troy at her side she has a strong, and hot, supporting hand. One of my favorite things about Ebon Rebellion is that Troy is much more present than in the other books. He is looking for redemption for his past acts against Arden and is committed not only to her cause, but to her . Question is if that will be enough for Arden to let go of his past actions and give in and trust him? To make matters more confusing, Roman, her werewolf ex-lover, is back and doesn't trust Troy one single bit.

Arden is back to being hunted by the Elves. And now there is also this Ebon Guard, is it truly a possible ally or another group on the hunt after Arden? Arden is fierce and badass but is that enough ?

"You've got this. You are the baddest bitch in town,"

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review!

I am amazed! Just wow! Book 4 of the Otherside series does not disappoint!

I absolutely loved Ebon Rebellion by Whitney Hill! This book brought everything I was hoping for in the other 3 books and turned it up a full notch!

Arden is a great protagonist, and I've loved seeing the growth of her character from the beginning until now. She has definitely become the "badazz" woman she was always meant to be! Gaining her voice, manifesting in her powers, and taking control!

"𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘥." 𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘧𝘪𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥, 𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘵. "𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦."

Also, I am still cheesing over finally getting that "ship" between Arden and Troy! The author really knew how to give us a "slow burn" in the romance factor between these two cause I've been waiting since Book 2 and I'm here for it all. Love, love their chemistry together!

The world the author has created is phenomenal and is so reminiscent in many ways to what is actually happening in the real word today.

I loved it and looking forward to reading the other books in the series!

This author does a beautiful balance between giving the reader enough to be engaged and withholding enough to ignite the imagination. This series, to date, has been an exciting ride. The character developments are very well done and even though most characters are likeable, none are perfect. I look forward to reading everything Whitney Hill writes. I highly recommend reading this series.

Well, well, well, just when I thought things were going to go a bit smoother for Arden, they AMPED right up!

In my first review of this series, I said to buy all of the available books and clear your time. After this fourth book, I am saying join me in solidarity as I camp out in front of the author's house and wait impatiently for the conclusion of this series!

Sigh...sadly that is impractical, and also probably illegal. But these books, OMG...sometimes you can just read the words and know an author laid her soul bare onto the pages. In book 4, Ms. Hill did exactly that and so much more. Our heroine tackles many difficult changes and realities in this one. Hardest of all may be the way she was manipulated into not being her full self. Ms. Hill pulls these emotions out and walks us through a difficult healing, with the kind of compassion, I wish every one in the whole world was able to receive, whenever we felt broken.

Added to that, the transition of enemies, to working together, to maybe more, with the main male character, is a slow burn journey, where trust is built brick by brick, no insta-anything here at all! And as a reader and a real person, who loves when life collides and expands on pages, I LOVED it!

Arden grows, the people around her gives her the support and space to do so, with one notable exception, but seeing her outgrow him, was delicious.

Ms. Hill has a talent for knitting real life issues with fantasy to broaden horizons and give readers a perspective they may not have thought of before, but they will not be able to deny now. So well fashioned are her words, and this story.

I cannot get enough of this series and I will live in hope that Book 5 drops early lol, and Ms. Hill keeps taking us back to the Otherside!

Hello Gemmies! I have an entertaining new book review to share with you today. Please note: I received a digital ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest and fair review.

Ebon Rebellion by Whitney Hill is the fourth book in the Shadows of Otherside Series. I really loved this book and Shadows of Otherside has become one of my new favorite paranormal series of all time! Romance, suspense, danger, pulse pounding excitement, and hot characters, Whitney Hill has done it again! Ebon Rebellion is a non stop action packed emotional thriller full of intrigue, drama, betrayal, sexiness, and of course paranormal creatures galore! Let's start with the cover...... gorgeous as always!!! This cover is a perfect compliment to the others in the series and really sets the tone for things to come.

Ebon Rebellion is an excellent character driven story. The story opens up about two months after the events in Ethereal Secrets. We find our main protagonist, Arden Finch dealing with the aftermath of the Vampire Reveal, keeping the alliance she started together, and being the new boss of all of Otherside. She's also juggling controlling her ever growing powers, her PI day job, and evading persistent enemies, while keeping her loved ones safe. It's a lot for anyone to deal with. Arden is a flawed character but I like that we see her growth with each book, and let me tell you, this Arden did not come to play any games. There is so much heart and soul in this book, you will find yourself feeling all of the emotions while reading.

Like the previous books in the series, there is a host of interesting and compelling side characters. We get to spend a lot more time with Troy and learn more about this complicated character. We also see some old favorites and meet some new ones. This review is relatively spoiler free, but I will say there is a lot of passion and a romantic bond between two characters that gave me all of the feels. Whitney Hill managed to make me hate a character I loved, and love a character I hated! How dare you Whitney?!?!?! Guys, its really, really good! Trigger warning: there is also a lot of brutality and violence in Ebon Rebellion, and the reader is reminded that power is not given, you have to fight to keep it, and if you are viewed as "lesser".....you have to fight that much harder. These themes felt really timely and poignant with all of the current events surrounding race happening in the U.S.

Like the previous stories in this series, Ebon Rebellion takes place in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. This is near and dear to my heart as I live here. I also love how Whitney Hill weaved in some current events into the storyline. You don't have to live in North Carolina to appreciate this world and find your self fully immersed in it. It's contemporary, fresh, and familiar. I'm so in love with each of these books that I struggle to pick a favorite, they are that good! If you love paranormal creatures Ebon Rebellion has you covered! There are werewolves, witches, djinn, elves, vampires, kobolds, Gods/Goddesses, and more! Ebon Rebellion really has it all.

If you are a fan of found family, retribution, love, epic battles, paranormal politics, elemental magic, shifting power bases, enemies to lovers, lovers to enemies, and kick ass heroines then read this book! Published by Benu Media, Ebon Rebellion releases on June 23, 2021, and is available for pre-order from all major booksellers. I give Ebon Rebellion 5 out of 5 gems. I'm looking forward to reading more adventures set in this universe. Happy Reading!

Gahhhhh this book is so good.

If you haven’t read the first three books, you absolutely MUST read them before cracking open Ebon Rebellion.

For me, this book delivers the most exciting part of a series - when you move away from “monster of the week” (as they say in tv) and into bigger conflict arcs. In this case, there is no Big Bad. Arden’s adversaries are constantly shifting - whether it’s the humans she’s hidden amongst for years, or the allies she closely relied on even just a couple months ago.

Fortunately, Arden has come a long way from the lonely girl we first met in Elemental - pushed around by her djinni family and former guardian, belonging neither here nor there, locking her magic down in fear for her life. Now, if Arden *played* bad bitch in Ethereal Secrets (book 3), in Ebon Rebellion, she embodies it. She’s here to claim what is rightfully hers and chase down what is owed to her.

The week after I read this book, someone I follow on Instagram (@joluehmann) wrote: “You can’t imagine abundance when you’ve been conditioned to believe scarcity is the standard.” This is EXACTLY Arden. She’s always imagined what it would be like to “have it all”. Now she’s learning that the vision she had for herself was very, very small. As her world widens, she struggles to accept her new reality - the good *and* the bad.

I feel like scarcity versus abundance play across larger themes of this story too. And how what looks like abundance from the outside can actually be a cage.

For example, as privileged as the elves are, they don’t appreciate what they have - either because they won’t out of arrogance and entitlement, or can’t out of resentment and obedience.

On that note, Troy breaks my heart. I was already pitying him late in book 3, after their super intimate moments post-battle, when Arden is just like, thanks for the tactical and emotional support, byeeeeeeeeeee. Book 4 doubles down on his tragedy. What an arc, to go from the asshole, moody pseudo-villain, to a subject of pity. Yet it’s still a mystery what *truly* motivates him.

Then there’s Allegra, the world’s most devoted, most effective cockblock. Sigh.

The penultimate book of a series always runs the risk of being meh - preparatory material paving the way for a finale. Ebon Rebellion, however, stands on its own. If the world ends tomorrow, and I never get to read book 5, I would still be very happy with where Arden’s story has landed. This is the kind of storytelling I wish was on tv.

After finishing this book, I recommend listening to MisterWives “Our Own House” and frolicking in a field. You will just be in that kind of a mood.

For the record, I received an advanced copy because I support the author’s patreon (and if you’ve read this far in the series, you should consider doing the same!)

I read an ARC of Ebon Rebellion by Whitney Hill and here is my review.

Once again I have a new favorite installment of The Shadows of Otherside series! Whitney Hill manages to expertly weave together threads of plot, backstory, and character development to give us a thrilling addition to the adventures of Arden Finch and her fellow Othersiders. The alliance and Arden's leadership skills are put to the test as the humans react to the Reveal and the Elves attemp to undermine her at every turn. Meanwhile, the Wild Hunt grows ever closer.

Ebon Rebellion keeps up with the fast paced action and the ever expanding mythological worldbuilding that readers have come to expect from Hill. Throughout the novel we're able to really contemplate how far Arden has come since Elemental. Her growth is incredibly satisfying as she steps into her rightful role among the Othersiders. We're also treated to new, sometimes scary sides of Arden as she creates her own path forward. This book definitely digs deeper into her relationship with Troy, and a couple scenes had me blushing for sure lol

Truly such a fun Urban Fantasy read! Run, don't walk, and go get yourself a copy of Ebon Rebellion and the rest of The Shadows of Otherside books today!

Another wonderful book in the series. I love the plot, the magic, the main characters journey, and that the unveiling is happening now and not some time in the past. I love how in-the-real-world it is, discussing realities of being a black woman in America, racial injustice and what it looks like when people do the work and begin to make reparations. I love that the guy is not her savior/alpha/superior, and I love that condoms are used in the sex scenes.

Hill continues to enthral, pitting her protagonist against domino-chains of adversity. Arden stands representative of persons from all minority groups, forced constantly to fight for her place in the world. Her character is inspirational and her triumph this book is immensely satisfying.

This is such a good series!

I enjoyed the first book and am very glad I kept reading! Each book has built flawlessly from the previous one, adding new elements to keep each volume so interesting that I have spent the last few days immersed in her books and am planning to start the next one as soon as I finish writing this review. I gave these books a try because one review compared her to Hamilton's early Anita books. This is accurate and, thank goodness, while there is some sex, it is meaningful and Not porn. There is a lot of violence, especially in this volume, but it all ties together with the decisions her characters make. This all takes place in today's world and yet, Hill's only concession to modern swearing is the use of the F-word. I applaud her restraint!
And, now, I'm off to the next book! Enjoy. I certainly look forward to rereading everything and catching all the nuances I missed while caught up in the action and plotting this first time around.

So good!

This series is so good; the intrigue and machinations of the elves is wreaking havoc with Arden's role as Arbiter and her plans to keep her home, friends and allies safe. The danger to her and her elf protector, Troy is greater than ever before. As she grows in her confidence and powers she faces even bigger threats and more Othersiders relying on her.

Such a great series. Even though Arden has been through a lot of challenges, I look forward to reading Ms. Hill's next book in this series.

Best on yet

I'm loving this series and to think, I discovered it by accident. I love the evolution of Arden. She is the HQIC. If you have not started this series, then I suggest you do. You won't be disappointed. It starts a little slow but picks up quick. You will fall in love with Arden and be Team Arden all the way. I'm so ready for the next installment and upset that I have to wait for the next book to drop. Hopefully, it won't take too long. Long reign the Queen.
