Rookie Rebels #5

Dear Roomie

Rate this book
Reid Durand isn't here to make friends.

Coming from a legacy of hockey greatness, he has games to win and things to prove. With his focus during his first season as a Chicago Rebel on his drive to succeed, every vice is off the table. No booze, no sugar, and definitely no women.

Kennedy Clark is the master of the side hustle.

She'll walk your dog, brew your espresso, and pick up your dry-cleaning, all while rocking it in Warrior pose. Standing still is impossible for her, because the moment she starts to slow down, it'll come rushing back in a torrent. The memories. The pain. The heartbreak.

Their meet-cute is more of a freeze-cute. Besides, they already know each other. He's the rude, entitled customer at her coffee shop, or what used to be her coffee shop since she just got fired—because of Mr. Extra Shot Americano himself.

Reid didn't intend to get Kennedy fired.
He didn't intend to rescue a dog after the poor thing ended up in the lake.
And he definitely didn't intend to acquire a new roommate.

A curvy, chatty, tempting roommate.
Now this perfect storm of events are about to wreak havoc on his neatly-ordered life.

Reid Durand isn't here to make friends, and he's certainly not here to lose his heart to a puppy, a team, or a chaos agent like Kennedy. But then we don't always get what we want ...

READ MY REVIEW ON THE BLOG

DEAR ROOMIE has a grump/sunshine trope and swept me off my feet! I wasn't a big fan of Reid Durand in FOREPLAYER. He was aggressive and hostile towards everyone and especially Cal, the hero of Foreplayer. In this new installment of the Chicago Rookies we get to know him and I loved what I learned.

Reid was such a revelation - behind his confrontational attitude was a sensitive, sweet man who could charm the pants off a woman if he set his mind to it. His moody disposition came from a stepfather who made him feel less than he was, stoking the competitiveness between Reid and his brother who plays on another hockey team and driving a wedge between them. You couldn't help but be mad at the man who was supposed to be a father figure. He did a number on both boys. Reid learned that he rarely got his stepdad's approval and only if he was focused on his career without distractions.
“You know what you are, Kennedy? Five foot two of chaos. You waltz in, disrupt everything, turn my life upside down, and make everything crazy.”

Enter Kennedy, the coffee shop girl. She's a sweet young woman with a sunny nature who carries a lot of guilt about the death of her parents in a fire around. Not settling anywhere, always travelling she doesn't allow herself to get attached to anyone. But how can you stay unattached when you help rescuing a dog and a hot hockey player who may be hard on the outside but totally fluff on the inside? I loved how they both brought out the best in one another. Reid and his new puppy didn't make it easy on Kennedy to wander off again to another country. And under Kennedy's influence Reid established a relationship with his teammates and learned how to be more social. She also showed him his worth.
You know what I see?” She didn’t give him time to answer. “A guy who would rather hide his decency behind a scowl, who thinks his kindness and his big heart are a weakness. I will always defend you, Reid, because you won’t take the time to do it yourself.”

And it was the best feeling to watch them fight for one another, ridding themselves of the things that held them down.

Every book in this series means reconnecting with many of the previous books and their characters. I love every team member on the Rebels' roaster. They are a meddling bunch like only family can be. And Kennedy's grandmother was the best. Very often she gave the two of them a very unsubtle shove in the right direction.

DEAR ROOMIE is another fabulous story in the Rookie Rebels series that put a perma-smile on my face. I feel like Kate Meader has found her groove with this series that makes her talent shine. If you're looking for a cute, witty, sweet grump/sunshine trope story don't look further. These books can all be read as standalones but I promise you'll want to go back and read the others, too!

My goodness y'all - I freaking love grumpy/sunshine romance.

That it's a sports romance to boot? Icing on the utterly irresistible, wildly addictive, delightfully delectable cake.

Man alive, if you're not reading the Rookie Rebels series, you don't even know what you're missing. Take, for instance, the perfect loveliness that was Reid and Kennedy's relationship. I love it when a man is brought to his knees by a woman, but Reid hit a little different. Maybe it was the sweet nothings - uttered in french (guh!), maybe it was the absolute devotion to his rescue dog (ungh!), or the way he was a true romantic at heart, even if he didn't know it (even if it was against his own will, swoon!), but Reid losing his heart was an absolute joy to read.

Kennedy brought to her knees in a similar manner was a fun surprise. I adored her fierce sunniness, but I also loved seeing her claws come out in defense of those she cared about. And my heart was no match for the sweetness and depth of her own giant (wounded, but bursting with love) heart. It was so fun to see her draw her grump out his shell. I loved their playful dynamic and how it slow burned itself into something deeper, more complicated, and wonderfully rewarding. So much romantic goodness on these pages!

And...the team. GAH, you guys. One of the biggest reasons that sports romance is one of my favorite tropes is this bromantic banter - the heartwarming, sometimes knuckle-headed, usually hilarious camaraderie between teammates. And Kate Meader got this element just perfectly right. It was hilarious and adorable and it gave Kennedy and Reid a run for their money when it came to stealing my heart. These men, there is no possible way I could adore them more.

This was another five star hit for me! I loved every moment I spent glued to these pages, and my heart was so happy with how it all played out. I know there's more goodness to come, and I am so stoked for it! ~ Shelly, 5 Stars

With Dear Roomie, Kate Meader pens a fun, sexy and heartfelt story that’s impossible not to love. Who doesn’t love a growly hockey player with lots of muscles who rescues one-eyed dogs and has a squishy heart?

Reid Durand is laser focused on his career. There’s no room for anything – no alcohol, no friends, certainly no women – other than winning and proving to his ex-NHL great stepfather and current NHL star brother that he’s equally talented.

Kennedy Clark is constantly on the move trying very hard not remember while traveling the world teaching yoga and ESL but doesn’t hesitate to stay in Chicago a few months to help out her almost grandmother.

But after being evicted, fired (accidentally by a Hot Jerk) and then co-rescuing (with said Hot Jerk) an abused puppy Kennedy ends up rooming with Hot Jerk a.k.a. Reid’s place as his new dog’s caretaker. What ensues to his very structured life when a puppy and a free spirit room in is utterly sweet and delightful.

I adored Reid and Kennedy equally. They were both flawed, yes. But they were also very appealing in their own way and more importantly perfect for each other.

Reid put up such a cold front but was really a marshmallow with his swoony French sweet nothings, his huge heart rescuing and adopting a dog and giving his heart to the Kennedy whose sunshine, effervescence and strength helped coax Reid out of his shell.

I LOOOVED having the Rebels pitch in and help this couple, especially because their banter is so enjoyable. Also entertaining was Kennedy’s grandmother who gave Theo’s senior fan club a run for the money. And oh my heart that epilogue, so sweet and cute! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series and hopefully we’ll even get Reid’s brother’s book.

Dear Roomie is book #5 of the Rookie Rebels series by Kate Meader. It is told from both points of view with a happy ending. Genres: Sports Romance| Hockey Romance. Tropes: Roommates | grumpy-sunshine romance

Another great addition to this series! I love seeing the Rebel family grow, and Meader keeping us updated on the OG Rebels makes me so happy. This was a Gump and Sunshine story with a bit of twist. Both were a bit damaged. Kennedy was dealt a hard blow as a teen and protected her heart by keeping people at arm's length. Reid's father damaged him, and he struggled with making meaningful connections. On paper, they shouldn't work, but for some reason, they did. No matter how many grumps with the hidden heart of gold I encounter, I never seem to tire of them. Reid played the role so well, and I was an instant fan. The bromantic scenes are still some of my favorites, and it was fun watching the other players insert themselves in Reid's life. The pup was a bonus for me, and that ending had me all sorts of heart-eyes. Can't wait for the next book!

Grumpy Cinnamon Roll Meets Sunshine Wanderer

Reid and Kennedy come from very different but equally heartbreaking backgrounds leading them to their current paths: a**hole of the NHL and never stays in one place long Jane of All Trades. But when they rescue an adorable dog they end up rescuing each other.

I loved Reid’s grumpiness and Kennedy’s refusal to except it at face value. The slow burn between these two was as adorable as Bucky and led to a very explosive union! I also enjoyed that exploration of love, loss, and toxic family dynamics and how Reid and Kennedy were able to immediately see what the other needed to get past their scars but were also willing to do the work for their own.

It was so great to catch up with other Rebels and their families while also meeting new ones. And I’m so intrigued by Erik and Casey! And Bastian!

I received a complimentary review copy of this book but all opinions are my own.

Grumpy, surly, and sometimes rude hockey player meets a free spirited girl who turns his world upside down.

I won't go into the details much but god I love this series and I love Kate Meader's writing magic. Its not hard to connect to her characters at all. She has a way with dialogue and banter that makes each book hard to put down. And I loved Reid and Kennedy together. I loved how hard that Reid fell for Kennedy even though...god, this guy was so hard on himself. His famous hockey star stepfather really did a number on him by the way he raised him. Reid was so hungry for approval and love and needed someone in his corner who believed in him. And in stepped quirky Kennedy. She was a hard working , burst of sunshine and positivity girl who never stayed in one place long. A tragedy in her past made her a bit of a commitment phobe, unwilling to feel too much in case things went wrong. But when Reid and Kennedy are involved in saving an abused puppy (the adorable Bucky) the stars align and these two opposites are drawn together. What a journey their love story was. I loved every slow burn minute of it.

Light and a little sexy, this was a low angst, easy read. I love a grumpy hero and a roommates to lovers situation always works for me, so this had a lot going for it. It feels like a sports romance, with great side characters and hints to future books. And I loved the hero, a pro athlete who just doesn't seem to know his worth. Reid's no-nonsense attitude and single-minded focus were definite wins, as was watching him find an appreciation for the sweeter things in life. While the distinct lack of "love" was disappointing (this was definitely more lust-focused), I enjoyed it overall. The heroine holds this back from being a great read, but it's a solid addition to the series - and easily reads as a standalone.

The story follows Reid, a hockey player who takes his career seriously. He's got a reputation as a bit of a jerk, and focuses almost exclusively on hockey during the season. That means no junk food, no booze, and no women during the season. But when the cute barista from his local coffee shop comes crashing into Reid's life - and home - in a big way, keeping to those rules becomes more difficult than ever. There's obvious attraction between Reid and Kennedy, and Kennedy has made it clear that she's interested in a fling before she starts traveling the world again. Giving into temptation would be all too easy, but Reid is determined not to break his rules for something casual.

I had really high hopes for this, and that's perhaps why I'm left a little disappointed. It's not that I didn't enjoy this - I did - but Kennedy was aggressive in her desire to hook up, and that kept things in a very lusty, unemotional place for most of the book. It also detracted from the chemistry, and I felt a little bad for Reid. There's even one scene (pretty far into the book) where Kennedy says that if they wait until the end of the season, she'll probably have banged one of Reid's friends by then and it will no longer be an option. That's... yeah, that was a problem for me. I wanted some more intimate moments, more emotional bonding rather than the cat and mouse game they were playing. There were glimpses of that throughout, but not enough to win me over. It's still a solid read and makes a great addition to this series, but isn't a standout for me. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this roommate romance.

We met Reid before, and he wasn’t exactly loveable, so I was anxious about his story–would I connect with him? I should have had more trust in the author, because she managed to make me fall for him.

Not exactly game changing, but the irritable man who keeps to himself actually has a soft heart and lots of love to give. What’s more original is that he first shows his tender side to… a dog. And that’s because of the dog that he’s going to open his heart to Kennedy.

She’s a wandering soul, and the total opposite to Reid’s unmovable nature. A man of habits–all deeply motivated by his strained relationship with his stepfather–he doesn’t fully understand Kennedy, but the attraction is strong. I really enjoyed watching them develop their relationship. They were awkward and cute.

Not only does Reid open to Kennedy, he also starts interacting with his teammates. It was great to see all the Rebels again–and in some hilarious scenes too. That also means some on ice action, as well as team management, and I couldn’t be happier–I love some hockey in my hockey romance.

Well defined and interesting characters, a bit of sexy times, great banter and good hockey, I was in hockey romance heaven.

Quickie

- Series: Rookie Rebels #5 (but can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #hockey romance #opposites attract #forced cohabitation #dogs #French
- Triggers: past death, animal abuse (nothing explicit)
- Main couple: Kennedy Clark & Reid Durand
- Hotness: 4/5
- Romance: 4/5
- + Rebel team intervention? YAY!
- – not much sense in sneaking French words here and there

4 stars. I read this book over a week ago, so I'm playing catch-up with reviews. I really enjoyed this book. I appreciated that the heroine was sexually experienced and wasn't treated like she was less worthy because of it. She was open about her desires and needs but she wasn't slut shamed or treated poorly because of her sexuality. It's a refreshing change for a sports romance, which is almost always the exact opposite of this (with the hero being much more experienced). So THANK YOU, KATE MEADER, for writing something different.

Safe; heroine is experienced, hero stays celibate during the hockey season and then has a series of ONS once the season ends. The heroine considers hooking up with others because the hero stays celibate and she has plans to move away before the end of his season. He pushes her away quite a bit (b/c of his rules), so I personally didn't think it was unreasonable for her to consider her options. In the end, neither of them is with anyone else, but there is some jealousy and slight OM drama. No cheating.

I love sports romance with hockey being the sport I like to read most about, and Kate Meader has never disappointed me.

We met both characters in other books, and I wanted to read about both of them since they appeared. Reid is a grumpy asshole who hides a heart of gold, and I loved reading some scenes from his POV, especially since he was a pretty big part of the last book(Cal and Mia's). I appreciate that he doesn't down play his asshole-ish behavior, he's never surprised when someone calls him on it, he's owning his shit-starter ways and his insults.

Kennedy is his complete opposite. She's charming and she gets along with everybody(or almost!)! The book starts with her getting evicted and a few days after that getting fired. She can't get a break and it totally broke my heart seeing her like that. But captain neat freak manages to save the day, without even knowing!

I'm not a big fan of forced proximity novels, but I read a few amazing ones lateley, this one being one of them, and I am getting won over! Seeing how Reid and Kennedy interacted when they were living together as owner and dog sitter/dog nanny was hilarious!

If you're in the mood for a fun book with lovely characters, don't miss this one!

Started to skim-read at page 286. I should've have DNF this instead.

Kennedy and Reid doesn't even have a spark nor chemistry. At all. The book is kinda boring for me. The only ray of sunshine on this book is Bucky (and he's a dog!).

Canadian Reid Durand comes from a hockey family. Both he and his half-brother are in the NHL, as was his stepdad who raised his sons to compete against each other. Which might explain why Reid is a loner with a rigid set of rules. His surly attitude, when he comes to get his coffee, is certainly why Kennedy calls him Hot Jerk in her mind. But when he unintentionally get her fired, you'ld think that's when their love story really begin but no. This is when they save a dog from drowning. And then she become his roomate and employee and the rest is history❤.

That's one of Kate Meader's talent as a writer, that she can make me love even the hot jerks😉. If you already read her I don't need to convince you that she write sexy chemistry and endearing complex characters. When she add a dog to the story it's the cherry on top! The bickering bromance between the Rebels' players is an amazing treat too!

I enjoy grumpy/sunshine but I wouldn't say it's my top tier favorite. This one may have changed my mind. Possibly because in conjunction you had a really solid friends to lovers undercurrent. Sure, both of them seemed intent on ignoring that they were friends but the dynamic was there and it was great.

It was fun seeing where this book intersected with Cal & Mia's, too. Sometimes that can just feel like a retread but it actually felt like getting a different POV here.

And I just loved how they so quietly gave each other their trust. Usually the conflict coming so late doesn't work for me but they were both just so all in without acknowledging it that it felt right here. It wasn't about harboring some big secret or whether they could work or support one another, it was about realizing the other person already was there.

Also Reid with Bucky! Kennedy's trips to see her grandma! The bingo!

Just thoroughly enjoyed.

This was a fun one, Kennedy and Reid were such opposite, yet with Kennedy, Reid was able to let go of his iron control a bit, even at the start. It started out small, but soon Reid was himself around Kennedy and he was a good guy, not the asshole he showed to the world. Of course after seeing all that happened with his father, the asshole part made sense. I was glad when towards the end Reid finally let loose on the dad and put him firmly in his place. I worried that this one wasn't going to end well, Kennedy didn't seem like she was going to share that her wanderlust was waning and Reid didn't seem like he was going to tell Kennedy he wanted her to stay. Good thing both of them came to their senses. I loved how this one ended coming full circle at the beach where they saved the puppy, who suddenly had some demands of his own, such a cute way to end things.

Quick(ish) Review

This is a comfort series for me and it’s easy to dive back in the Chicago Rebels series. Reid is a great grump hiding a cinny roll middle, and Kennedy is just the right sunshine for him. Their Firsts are very good, and it was an easy to root for them. Perhaps Kennedy was a little too free with sharing his personal abstinence stance, and both of them knowing these 70s references as well as they do felt a bit weird for Gen Z but since I got the references it worked for me. All in all, I still like this series and I’m intrigued by the next couple, so I’d like hockey romances like I do, you might enjoy this.

I love heroes with vulnerabilities that they show only to the heroines, and Reid’s slow transformation from his rigid, lone-wolf lifestyle (and the pressure that created it) through the story was so perfectly depicted that I found myself re-reading some passages just because I enjoyed the flow of dialogue or because I was so caught up in the story I started rushing and wanted to go back and savor it. I loved Bucky (the rescued dog) and how Reid’s playfulness and capacity to love grew with him as well as Kennedy (who had to work through her own baggage as well), but I also laughed at Reid’s teammates and growled at his dad. And his relationship with this brother… man, this story just had all the feels!

Can I just say once again how happy I am that Kate Meader decided to continue writing in the Chicago Rebels world? The Rookie Rebels series has been fantastic from the start and it continues in Dear Roomie. This opposites attract/forced proximity story had lighthearted moments interspersed with some past darkness in both the main character’s lives, but watching them both accept and deal with their hard pasts and embrace the good in their lives was uplifting and made this an incredible romance.

Reid Durand is new to the Chicago Rebels and plans to keep his head down and prove his worthiness to the team and get that multi-year contract he’s been after. He doesn’t do distractions during his hockey season; he trains, he eats what fuels him, and he is celibate. His younger half brother is a natural and Reid has spent his entire career just trying to make his step-father as proud as his brother does. He’s known as a grump, an a$$hole, and as a player with attitude. He’s never made friends on a team, but then he’s never played for a team like the Rebels before. He also has never had a hard time ignoring women during the season but there is something about the pink streaked haired, silver eyed barista that calls to him making him wonder if she’ll be around once his season is over.

Kennedy Clark has taken time out from her globe-trotting life to spend time in Chicago with Edie, her grandmother and pretty much her only living relative who has had to move into a retirement center. It’s not a hardship; Edie was there for her when she needed her most. Barista, dog walker, yoga instructor; Kennedy does what she needs to in order to have a roof over her head and pay her bills but when Edie’s son sells his mother’s house Kennedy finds herself homeless and having trouble finding a non-creepy roommate.

Reid and Kennedy seem like complete opposites and in some respects they are but they also share a love of animals and are kind to a fault although Reid doesn’t show that side to most people. When they rescue a dog from drowning, Reid hires Kennedy to stay with Bucky who he refuses to give up even if he is a bit of a distraction and when he finds Kennedy was living in her car he insists she live with him. Man the heat between these two was so evident from the start and living together it just gets hotter by the day. Who knew Reid could be a sweetheart who whispers sexy French when he’s turned on? Not me and it makes Kennedy open her heart to the possibility of more and keeping her feet planted in one place.

I loved that they both helped one another see their hang-ups in a new light. They weren’t afraid to be open and share advice even if sometimes the other didn’t want to hear it. They went from being cautious and avoiding one another because the sexual tension was just too much, to not being able to keep their hands and other body parts to themselves.

Anyone who has read Kate Meader will recognize several characters from her past works, yet this book can easily be read as a stand-alone. However, once you experience the camaraderie of this team, the hilarious advice giving, the endearing encouragement you’ll be hooked and want to read more.

Fast paced and filled with characters you can’t help but like, once I picked up Dear Roomie I did not put it down until I finished.

Oh my lands...y’all this book had it all!! Gruffy, French sweet nothings speaking hero with a marshmallowy side, perky heroine with the sweetest charm and a side of sass, a steamy roomie situation, and hello, my absolute favorite character (sorry Kennedy and Reid)...Bucky (yay for Marvel!) the stalwart, cute as pie, rescue fur baby!

I loved so many things about this story. Reid’s difficult family dynamics, Kennedy’s emotional walls, the team rallying to help Reid out of relationship binds-that was adorably supportive and hilarious!-and of course, Bucky!

I voluntarily read an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Leave it to Kate Meader to take my least favorite Rookie Rebel, Reid "I don't want to be your friend" Durand, and transform him into my favorite hero of the series. I should have known there was much more to this guy than the rigid lifestyle and snarly, in-your-face demeanor that he's perfected with teammates and opponents alike. All it took to begin chipping away at that hard shell was a half-drowned, one-eyed, skin and bones pup and a "dog nanny" with bubbling, upbeat, positive energy and radiating more sunshine in her personality than...well...the sun. Reid's by-the-book life just got complicated. I adored these two together. Well, I adored them eventually. With Kennedy, my affection happened quickly and continued to deepen as her actions showed her character and loyalty. It took a bit longer to warm up to Reid but once his layers began to unravel (Bucky, the rescued dog started the process - Kennedy finished it), he slowly began to win my heart. And by the time he won over Kennedy - and her grandmother - I was a puddle at his feet.

Kate Meader is one of those authors who never lets me down. Whether her characters hang out at the fire station, in the kitchen, at the hockey rink, or somewhere else, I know going into any book she's written that I'll need a fan (she is a master of sexual tension), tissues (emotional depth that wrings my heart), and I should never take a drink while reading (some of those zingers are hilarious). In Dear Roomie, she gave me all of the above...and then some. There are a lot of Rom-Com elements to this story but there's also deep emotional baggage that both main characters are hiding beneath the surface. Meader explores some painful topics, such as the lasting effects of verbal and emotional abuse and how traumatic loss at an early age can manifest itself in the way we choose to live and interact with others. Both topics are handled deftly, imparting the gravity and importance of them while keeping the story on a hopeful, upward trajectory.

Side characters add an incredible amount of richness to this book without detracting from the main couple. Grandma Edie is a hoot; I want to be just like her when I reach Assisted Living age. Reid's teammates, along with retired Rebels, and the WAGs (wives and girlfriends) are all along for the ride. I love the camaraderie among this group. They have me laughing and crying in equal measure. And, may I just say I hope we haven't seen the last of Reid's brother, Bastian? I know he isn't a Rebel but he so deserves a happily ever after of his own.

I enthusiastically recommend adding Dear Roomie to your summer reading list. It's the fifth book in Kate Meader's Rookie Rebels series but can absolutely be enjoyed as a standalone, however, once you meet Reid's teammates don't be surprised if you immediately start searching out their stories too. They really are impossible to resist.

I don’t know why, but everything in this came together and worked!!

I absolutely loved both characters, I loved their backstories (I mean, tragic but very well written), and I loved the slow progression of their romance and feelings. It’s hard not to love Reid - emotionally abused by his stepdad his whole life, his grumpy demeanour was very well explained and you really root for him to gain his confidence. And I loved that he wasn’t the stereotypical jock - celibate during the season, but not a manwhore during the offseason. He was amazing. And the way he thinks about and speaks about Kennedy? Swoooooon!!!

Truly I don’t have a single thing I didn’t like here. So glad I read this.

Heavens to Betsy, this series is made of magic and stardust! I'm telling you, this series has latched on to me in ways I did not expect and cannot be happier about.

No kidding, this series builds upon the greatness of each preceding book just when you thought it couldn't get any better. Kate Meader has mastered this storytelling gig. Her writing style will draw you in and snare you. Her comfortable and relatable storytelling really speaks to me. The plot of this book was carefully constructed and executed brilliantly. I love how the author sets up her stories and has the reader eating out of the palm of her hand. Gah! I could fangirl forever about her writing skills.

These characters will enchant you. Meader's characters have it all going for them—the whole nine yards. The lead characters are fully fleshed out with comprehensive backgrounds. All of the characters are one of a kind and each one brings something unique to the story. The characters are all unique and distinct to the reader. Each character's personality stands out against the rest. Her characters are relatable and it is easy to form a connection to them even when their quirks would ordinarily be a turnoff. She basically makes the characters come to life and feel tangible. On top of all that, the characters also have excellent character growth that is paced perfectly throughout the story. As an added bonus, the sense of found family abounds. The dynamics between characters are interesting and compelling.

The romance in this book was so heartwarming. The connection that Reid and Kennedy formed was so natural and strong. Watching that connection grow was a delight! Reid and Kennedy were perfect for each other. Opposites that fit like perfect puzzle pieces. They filled the gaps that the other needed filled. Their attraction to each other was sizzling but their deep emotional connection made it even more spectacular.

Overall, this story had it all in spades. The mechanics of the story are polished and expertly crafted, the characters are memorable because they are the full package, and the romance is natural and hard-won. You cannot fail to fall head over heels for one of Kate Meader's stories. She is truly a marvel in her craft and I am so ready for more of her stories!

Kate Meader is an author I cannot resist reading—more than once, at that. And I swear, every new books she releases is my favorite . . . until the next one comes out, that is. Consider this a little pre-warning before I review Dear Roomie, the fifth book in the Rookie Rebels series and, shockingly, my new favorite book from Ms. Meader.

About two weeks ago, I picked up an older book that had been recommended to me, and which I enthusiastically bought with a desire to read it right away. Sadly, "right away" wasn't possible (#life) and by the time I did get the chance to open it, I was clearly past the first flush of newbookitis. You know, that feeling when you one-click and you need to read it then and there because you're too excited to wait? The result was a week of struggling to read a page here and a page there, until I came to the conclusion it was the wrong time for that book. Except for another six days, I couldn't even bring myself to try something else. I put my Kindle on my bedside table and just left it there, when it's normally beside me at all times. (You know, for emergencies.)

And then I decided to be responsible and give Dear Roomie a go. I knew I'd like it. Hell, I knew I'd love it. But I didn't know that I would become so attached to it that I can't stop thinking about it. It was an all the feels read for me, checked every single little box I have (and possible some I didn't even know I had) when it comes to romance books, and I fell hard and fast for Reid. (You can't expect my heart to withstand a man trying so hard and also saving a drowning dog. You just can't.) The man is the definition of grumpy asshole, and yet, is hiding so much under that exterior that I just . . . oof, I can't. My heart *and* my ovaries are in a woe-begotten state because he's not real, and yet also so happy to have met him on the pages of this book.

I could probably spend another several paragraphs on all the things I loved about this book, including but not limited to cameos from other characters in the Rebels line-up, nicknames, Fish's mysterious mistake, Kennedy and her grandma (who shares a name with my grandma!), and a brother who clearly needs a book of his own. Instead, I will say this: if you are not already reading the Rookie Rebels series, you need to rectify that mistake ASAP. Dear Roomie has it all: heart, heat, and humor, and that's something that can truly be said about each of the books that preceded it. But this one also has Reid, so if you're looking for a place to start and you're not fazed by starting mid-series, then have at it. You won't regret it.

How have I missed books 2 to 4 of this series? Okay, cards on the table, I thought this was a totally different book so my rating is somewhat influenced by my disappointment that this isn't A Kiss for a Kiss which is what I thought I was buying - my bad!

Reid Durant is the exception to the rule that all Canadians are polite and friendly. His stepfather has brought him up to consider everyone and everything a potential barrier to being a successful hockey player, including his stepbrother Bastian. He eats healthily, swears off sex during the season and practices for hours every day, yet nothing is ever good enough for his father.

Kennedy Clark is a rolling stone. After her parents died in a house fire she has avoided putting down roots, preferring to travel the world looking for adventure. She's been in Chicago for a while, looking out for her step-grandmother who has recently gone into an old people's home, and is saving for a trip to Thailand teaching English as a second language by dog walking and working as a barista.

When a series of events lead to Reid getting Kennedy fired, and Reid adopting a stray dog, Reid offers Kennedy a job dog-sitting while he is on the road. But soon Reid finds his focus is being tested by his diminutive roomie and his heart is being softened by a small, beaten-up dog. Will opening his heart help or hinder his game?

I felt that this was too much hockey romance by the numbers, I thought I had read it all somewhere before, including playing games with seniors at an old people's home and acting as a concierge service. Maybe if I had read the three intervening books I would have felt more connection, but then I think my views are reinforced by the fact that I thought I had read all the books in this series until I checked - in other word, the characters seemed too familiar.

It was enjoyable but didn't bring anything new to the table to me.

Another great visit with the Rookie Rebels. You couldn’t find two people more opposite than Reid and Kennedy... while she is sunshine, fun, light and chaos, he is serious, ordered, disciplined and grumpy.!
However, as Kennedy slowly starts to get under his skin we see a new side to Reid and he really is quite adorable... I loved the fact that he didn’t ever loose his
grouchy persona except for when he was with Kennedy.
Their sarcastic humour, the moments with just the two of them and the realisation that they were just what each other needed really warmed my heart.

With the usual team shenanigans, nicknames and brilliant secondary characters this book was a joy.
I can’t wait to see who Ms Meader has coming next for us....!

Dear Roomie is the fifth book in Kate Meader’s Rookie Rebels series and the eleventh in the Chicago Rebels world. But don’t be alarmed, Dear Roomie is a standalone read, and a part of the story takes place at the same time as the previous book, Foreplayer.

Reid Durand is the newest member of the Chicago Rebels hockey team. Actually, at this point, he’s more like a visitor. The Rebels are Reid’s fourth team in five years. One of the benefits of this stop is that being in Chicago allows Reid to be in the same city as his younger brother Bastian, who plays for the Rebels crosstown rivals. While Reid loves his brother, he desperately wants to prove to his hockey legend father and the Rebels organization that he’s good, that he belongs, and that he deserves a long-term contract.

Kennedy Clark is a woman who wears multiple hats. She works at a coffee shop as a barista, she’s a dog walker, and she teaches yoga to senior citizens. She’s a drifter who for the past six years has traveled the world. Kennedy doesn’t like to stay in one place too long. While she’s friendly and outgoing, she doesn’t make deep connections with people.

I knew from Foreplayer that Reid was special. I just didn’t know how special he truly was. When I figured out Kennedy was his heroine, I remember thinking that I wasn't sure about these two. But they're perfect for each other. They both have some family issues, but for VERY different reasons. She appears to be all lite and airy. While he's dark and gloomy. Their back and forth banter is fun and entertaining. When they finally get together, their passion for each other comes through. Oh, and there's a dog added to the mix, rescued from a freezing lake by Reid.

There's a reason why Kate Meader is one of my favorite authors. I really can't explain it. She has this ability to just capture my heart with her characters and make me lose myself to her stories. I really, really hope Reid's brother Bastian gets a story. He's a nice guy. He worked his way into my heart just like Theo (Instacrush) did, the moment he appeared on the page.
