My job is the worst—I’m dead serious.I joined the Tres Lunas Police Academy because I’m a bad mofo.Okay, fine. I’m a wingless part-fairy in a town full of supernaturals looking for validation, alright? But it’s not very validating when your tiger shifter captain picks on you and has you clean up monster spit or stand guard at super boring city council meetings. Not until a dude drops dead onstage. Now, I’m stuck at a crime scene and the police chief—a smoking hot dragon shifter I’ve been burned by before—is here.I have to avoid him and the killer.Great.Can my job get any worse? It can when the murderer turns out to be a serial killer.FML.
Last week I had a lot of fun with the first book in this series and although I have gotten a few new books that I also terribly wanted to read I also wanted to dive into the second book in this series. Eventually reading the second book in the Lyon Fox series won out. Partly because I had a slight headache today and Denton has the perfect lay out to make reading a calmer and better experience, even when I'm not feeling too well.
Once more this book was simply a lot of fun. I really enjoy this world, where everything is possible, where you can encounter every kind of creature and species you can come up with, where those people are all living together, loving together, mingling and having surprisingly human issues. At times it can be a little overwhelming, all the names and mythology, but I already had way less trouble with following than I had in the first book.
I had more issues with following the case. Mostly because there were so many people present, so many characters involved and so many possible angles to look from. However, since it was quite clear that the characters actually having to solve the case had the same issue I just buckled up and enjoyed the ride. And eventually that was rewarded, because I quite liked the final outcome of the case and how everything was wrapped up.
The true star of the story and the series is our heroine though. I like how she is, even though she's not a human, so clearly human. She has flaws, she has insecurities, she has doubts, she has this need to prove herself. Even though she is totally connecting dots I don't see and even though she's clearly even more intelligent than I am I like how relatable it makes her. Which also makes her easy to like and to love. I can't wait to read the rest of her journey!
Lyon Fox continues her outrageously entertaining antics but now she is in academy, and I love that she wants to get there on her merit not on the word of her wayward dragon boyfriend! The secondary characters add and do not takeaway from this story! I laughed out loud at the dialogue and storyline!
I really liked the book & will read more from the author, but first let me start with the bad bits.
The author is not good with the initial set-up of stories...at least if you go by both the 1st couple of chapters of this book & the prior one in the series. For instance, there was no real lead in to the breakup & then she immediately starts flirting with another guy? It doesn't make sense.
I also don't like the use of "gah" as a vocal term for annoyance and I don't understand why they need to trap the killer. They could have just waited for the killer to come home afterwards.
In addition, the description of the book says "If you like Jim Butcher & Patricia Briggs," but that's really far off. This is not a serious urban fantasy like Butcher would write, nor a sexily serious urban fantasy like Briggs would write. People who only adore those books & see that comparison will likely be disappointed with this book.
However, (and this is where I get to the good bits) if people enjoy fun, cozy mysteries which take place in an awesome fantasy world, they'll really like this book.
The writing is a lot of bubbly entertainment & the story is funny. It's a quick read & I'm looking forward to book #3!
A great read - humour a great plot and wonderful characters. From the independent heroine who wants to be loved for all of her (warts and all) to the zany seniors and their wild antics. Okay I didn't get the first part but I had my suspicions about the second from the beginning. Training for her PI licence is getting her down. No matter what she does she keeps being bottom of the class. Now she, two other newbies and their trainer are such doing "crowd control" (except 8 people do not make a crowd) when one of the people nominated is killed. No one can figure out how until she shows them the weapon. But only after one on the newbies is struck down as well. Now the three and her handsome ex (the dragon shifter Captain) are on the case. With the hours in training, investigating she hardly has time to sleep when her BFF makes her help out with her BFF's sister's upcoming wedding. As if that wasn't enough both the dragon shifter and the vampire are putting pressure on her. Throw in another murder to make things even more frantic. Will they find the killer? Will she make a choice?
I don't normally leave reviews for books 2s and 3s as I generally chew through a series and don't know which way is up or down once I'm done.
But with the few reviews this book I thought I'd put my few thoughts to it.
I love this. I highly recommend this. This book had a scene that had me HOWLING in laughter. Not many books do that.
The romance in this book melts my heart, I've seen countless heroines fall in love, some fast and some slow but never have I seen a couple emerge with such heartfelt connection and love.
Other than that the MC is realistic, she's witty and snarky without that being her only mode. She has weak moments of doubts and vulnerability. moments where she's stupid and bullheaded. and so forth.
This is another comical adventure into the daily life of Lyon Fox as she struggles to complete her training as a rookie investigator. Lyon's faux profanity and quick wit only increase the humor in the numerous outlandish situations she finds herself in daily. This little jewel was a pleasure to read and I look forward to revisiting Lyon and her many friends in the next episode. Also, I do continue to hope that Ben, the poor heartbroken dragon shifter, gets a break with his lady love. This was fun to read!!!!!
Loved this second book - probably even more than the first! The mystery is a good one, the magic and world building are solid, and the characters are anything but flat. So good! I’m not totally sold on how one of the main characters ended up acting in this book (I just can’t imagine someone in that position not having more ethics) but I’ll go with it. And, bless Ann Denton (truly), not a single grammatical issue....too rare in books these days.
These bboks, they just keep getting better! I love Lyon! She's a sassy, fun, and kick butt character with so much spunk. she's hilarious and so loveable. Things keep heating up between her and the guys... I can't quite pin down who she'll end up with but it's so much fun to read along and go on this journey. The action and adventure and mayhem and mystery is addictive. Loved it!
So this one was a little less action packed but so much more. The floating boobs was probably my fav hearts on abs was great too and dragon boy hello girl get your harem started because I wouldn't be able to so no to either of them come on lady supernaturals do it better am I right? Haha read the books funny and fun and a little wtf is happening with the cat lady hmmm
Interesting take on murder mysteries and magical world. Main character reminds me of Stephanie Plum from Janet Evonovich series, except she does have a real talent for putting together the facts to find the murderer. Her running snarky commentary adds to the fun. Hope she writes many more in this series.
Book 2 in the Lyon Fox series is even better than book 1. Lyon is a quirky and has a wonderful personality. She is torn between 2 men while training for her new position as a police officer. Her magic still hasn’t become consistent. Great character development.
This is the second book in a fun series. The MC is trying to find her place in the world. New job, two guys, throw in some quirky neighbors and a murder... You have a nice, light afternoon read.
Book one had me laughingly loud and wanting more. This book topped it, snow and tabby are who i want to be when I get old and everyone should have a friend like them. Read this book you won't regret it
Doesn't Disappoint... Second book sure doesn't disappoint. I highlighted less and less with my Kindle the further into the series I read. Ops! It was far too entertaining to go and stoop to pausing my reading just to highlight the funnies. As if! Great read, loved it like I did the first book!
I'm officially dead tomorrow morning but no regrets. Inhaled and the feels, nailed it. I want more of Bennett and Luke. JR , the MC's BFF, adore her. She's a legit bestie. MC's two mischievous old lady neighbors are a riot. Thank goodness there's another book.
Book Two is as enthralling as Book One of Fae'd Up and Frustrated. The female lead again runs into trouble in several different ways, and it is both scary and entertaining. A must-read!
The Lyon mysteries are just fun! There’s a bit of danger, an I interesting intrigue, and some sexy steam. I love the spunky characters and the humor is top drawer!
