Seren Starlight isn’t your average witch. She's just celebrated her 27th birthday, but only just graduated from the esteemed senior academy of witchcraft because she refused to obey the rules.
A magnet for misadventure, things always go wrong around her.
Destiny takes Seren on a journey of shock and heartache. Will fate be kind or will Seren be left to pick up the pieces yet again?
Seren by name. Dippy in nature. Serendipity through fate.
Each Serendipity book is a complete story in the humorous misadventures of Seren Starlight, but there is an arc of mystery and romance which develops throughout this planned eight books series. Each book coincides with one of the sabbats of the wheel of the year and will be released roughly every six weeks. Since there is a mild Welsh theme, they are written in British English.
Seren Starlight isn’t your average witch. She keeps blaming her nausea and vomiting on someone inflicting her with a spell. But Carrot, her fox familiar, suggested maybe she might be pregnant! She was appalled. She hadn’t been with anyone for 7 months now. She would be huge if it was pregnancy and not having morning sickness like this. No way. Except… those dreams – they were dreams, right? She tried reading her tea leaves, but was confused by the message. Then she tried runes. The first suggested fertility! So she tried again. The second rune also suggested fertility! Her nettle test in the cauldron the next day likewise indicated pregnancy. So she was hoping the drugstore could give a final diagnosis. Carrot told her to talk to Siarl and let him help her. And now she worried he might think the baby wasn’t his!
She chose to apparate onto the school grounds and wear a shadow veil to conceal her as she went to the cave entrance. She went to Siarl’s office as Dellah Nightshade scurried out. She took off the shadow veil and saw guilt in his eyes and he couldn’t look directly at her. He impersonally asked in a monotone how he could help her, not the reaction she expected. She saw magazines on his desk opened to wedding pictures! Asking him if he had something to tell her, he shrugged and casually announced he was getting married – to Dellah Nightshade! Then he crushed her further by saying there was nothing between her and him, and never had been. She was merely a nuisance. So she didn’t tell him about their child. She would never let Della Nightshade near her baby. Something kept tickling at Seren’s memory, but she was too distracted to identify it. And Siarl’s thoughts were wondering why Dellah was here again and why they were getting married? And why was there no sound around him except keeping his focus only on Dellah? She sprayed her perfume and he forgot everything he was trying to remember.
Seren went back to her old room which had been torn apart, then returned to the caves where she could cry. Rather than go home and have to tell Carrot this painful news, she explored the caves. A hidden passage looked like it might get her past the outer walls of the school without being tracked home. To her surprise, she finds a dirty, bedraggled man dressed in rags and tatters who has apparently been living in the passages under the school. And there is something familiar about him. Who is this man?
This series is addictive. I can’t wait to read the next almost as soon as I have put down this one. I love the concept for the storyline as it is a twist that hasn’t been used in other fantasy novels. The plot of each book manages to be completely distinct and yet at the same time a link in a chain that connects all the books. Seren is a brilliant character she is brave and funny with just a hint of troublemaking thrown in. She’s also wildly unpredictable in the best kind of way. If you are a fan of fantasy with twists then this book and this this series is well worth reading. This is not the first book in the series and while it can be read as a stand-alone I do think as a reader I was more invested because I had started the series from book 1.
Seren Starlight has just celebrated her 27th birthday, but Siarl was not around to be with her. Seren is outraged to find out that Siarl is engaged to be married to another woman. Their kind do not marry, they handfast for a year and a day. When she goes to confront him, she runs into a man that has been living in the passages under the school. There is something familiar about him and Seren is determined to find out what. Seren and Siarl continue to have a HFN. We have three more books in the series to enjoy!
I received an advance copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The story begins with Seren finding out some big news. She goes to confront Siarl with the news and finds him engaged to be married. What ensues is Seren's typical approach to figuring things out. Along the way, we meet a new character, who I did not see coming but Poppy weaves him right in with his crazy background and story. I can't wait to see what comes next.

Ok, so I know this is a planned 8 book series but its sooooo agonizing steam rolling through the book only for it to end, wonderfully but nowhere near resolved and complete. I love this series and I can't wait to go back and reread it all once it's over (in fact I will probably be rereading the series so far after I write this) I refuse to give any spoilers in my review so there isn't much I can say. Every bit of this book is a new reveal to our mystery and its straight up awesome.

I absolutely loved this book and all of the magic inside. This book hooked me from the first page and did not let me go until I finished the entire thing in one sitting! This book is a must read!
