Julien Bryan is known for his photographs during the siege of Warsaw in 1939. This edition contains two books- a reprint of the 1939 Siege, and the authors visit of Warsaw 20 years later. In total over 100 pages of photos from 1939 and 1959.
178 pages, many of which are photos. This book contains the original 1939 reports and photos from Mr. Bryan as well as the 1959 updated experiences and photos.
The damage wrought on Warsaw during the siege was absolutely devastating and the author does an admirable job giving the nitty gritty details of his experiences there.
The latter portion detailing the attempts at finding those he had photographed 20 years prior was a mix of joy and sadness. So many did not survive the war, the Warsaw uprising in particular took a heavy toll. But for those that did survive, they eked out a meager existence working to bring enough food on a table, no luxuries, just resilience and fortitude. The same spirit that led to them surviving the war, leading to them rebuilding their shattered homes and lives. I really enjoyed this book.
