Generously--3.5 stars Well, I read the blurb on the back and it sounded interesting. A long ago crime, young girl witness who can't remember, now having dreams and starting to remember, needs the protection of a big, strong male. Good premise, huh?
I read it. There were several TSTL moments on the part of the heroine. Someone's tried to kill you twice--so you go for a long walk in a deserted area with just one guard? Uh, no, I don't think so.
He believes he's cursed because his father was an a@#hole and there's been tragedy in his life? Uh, no.
He must not surrender to his love for the heroine because she might die? Hello? Somebody's already trying to kill her...
3 1/2 stars. Good story. Full of suspense, romance and the burdens of the past that so many of us carry that hinder us in living a full life. It is easy to identify with Aimee who isn't as beautiful in the obvious way as her mother and sisters, doesn't like the lime light but prefers to read, and has been derided for years by her aunt. No wonder she has self-confidence issues. Royce has similar issues about being worthy of love, for other reasons. Aimee had it right when she said that Royce was hiding behind what his father had said and all the tragedies in his life to protect himself from opening up and loving again. But even if you identify that doesn't make it easy to get over it. Even years of counseling doesn't always do it.
By the end of it the story about her mother's death does seem a little too convoluted to be believed. As her father said, it was hard to fathom so many people were running around the house that night. But overall, I enjoyed the story.
This is one of those romance novels where the title appears to have been pulled out of a box at random, and has no relation to the content. The blurb is misleading as well, only because it is written in first person, while the book is third person. The story is more conventional than the title and blurb might lead one to expect: woman in danger flees to remote house with moody man, propinquity kicks in. It helps that they are in the same class, have previously met, and are of similar temperament.
The suspense plot is reasonably integrated into the romance plot, and they are well-balanced. However, this is the third book in a series, and both the threat and the complex resolution appear to be part of a series arc. It's probably better to read the series complete and in order.
Liked it a lot. Though some of the reveals were a bit far-fetched. But it was a good end to the three part series and it was the one I was in anticipation over the most.
Een passend einde voor deze reeks. Soms ging het wat snel en begreep ik niet altijd alles de eerste keer. Om die reden 4 sterren, maar zeker de moeite waard.
Lady Aimee Daventry's mother was killed in a scandalous way. Amiee is at the clock's back when she tries to solve the mystery behind her mother's death. But deep in the recesses of her mind she know's that she is going to need help. So Aimee goes to the one person she know's can help her and protect her at the same time Royce Grenville, Viscount Stonehurst. In pokine around in the past Aimee has alerted the killer and now he is after her. Try as she might she know's it is dangerous, so she finds confurt in Royce's arms. But Royce and Amiee get tangled and are not aware of the trouble that looms in the horizon until it is too late. When it's clear that they wont get away the killer pops out, but gallant Royce defeats him. And now with the danger over Royce is thinking that he can't live without Aimee,so he asks for her hand in marriage.
A satisfying conclusion to the Daventry sisters' story. The plot was somewhat predictable - and as is often the case, it is difficult to have enough truly developed characters to make a romantic mystery work, otherwise a good read.
I don't know what it is (or isn't) about this book. I wanted to love it, I really did, but I just never felt the va-va-voom. The characters were loveable enough, yet I didn't love them. The mystery was pretty good, I totally got one but missed the other until the big reveal.
I have another favorite author to add to my list. Stonehurst and Aimee will capture your heart like they did mine. Excellent series of novels. Buy all three and enjoy.
