Russel Gallant is the sheriff of a small, mostly boring town, ever since the railroad was built a distance away. It still has a trading post, though, run by Sally Parsons and her young son, Clive. James Hawkes figures this will be easy pickings for he and his gang to take over to use as a command post. It would make a perfect spot for cow thieves to stop by driving their stolen cattle. Sheriff Gallant hopes a talking to will be enough to get the gang to move on. A nudge turns into a shove and before you know it, it is an all out fight to the death. Very exciting standalone!
This story by Jesse Storm likely captures the constant struggle between good folks and bandits that raged across the American West as families and merchants moved west, settled in small communities and defended their meager lifestyle against evil. The 3 main characters represent both sides. The reader will love the page turning pace and enjoy a happy ending.
Loved every minute. Grew up watching Westerns on black and white TV and reading them, too. Not Penny Dreadfulls but Short, LAmour, Zane Grey and Mulford. Still find so much comfort in a good Western. Mr. Petit's good guys/gals exemplify the positive characteristics of honor, courage, hard work and strength. Refreshing!!!
A hard driving Western story that read better than most
Good story telling and the chance to peer into the hearts of really bad men that murdered with abandon. But the counter weight was an equal opportunity to ride with the brave and noble good guys, who wanted nothing more than to make the untamed land a safer place to bring up a family. .
When I saw the title of the book, I wondered what this was about. As I read through the book I learned it was about how bad things can happen to good people, but can change their lives for the good. Impossible you say? Read on to find out.
A good story , lots of action. The characters were believable and the book was well written and edited. I'm going to read the next book by the author. If you like westerners , you won't be disappointed by A Widow's Post.
I choose this rating because this was a fascinating western. I'm a C. J. Petit fan and this western was every bit as good as his.(and that's saying a lot) This book was hard to put down. I'm so excited that I found your work.
Some characters brought problems on themselves. Sally was a loving mother, but kept her son and herself in danger by her stubborn refusal to go to a safer place.
It is hard to imagine that the author is out of grammar school. He seemed to have little knowledge of the old West and used too much repetition of weird terms. Sorry!
A story of someone wanting something that is not his.
Starts slow, speeds up halfway through, and ends with non-stop action. Reads like a likely story from a town's history. A little romance and a lot of death. Recommended for adult readers.
Strong men with moral and physical courage. Strong women who do not wilt when faced with danger. Lots of action with interesting characters. Great western read.
Sheriff Russel tried to get the men who bother the widow Sally to leave. He should have known then that was a mistake. Now he was leading a posse into danger to save her and her son. Death was coming.
You didn't live in Utah and fight Cherokee or Choctaw natives. That spoiled the entire book. Good grief, there is around 2000 miles separating them. If not for that colossal mistake it could have been a half way decent story
Liked the story line and characters but I don’t care for the many times the main character spent reflecting back about things in his past. There is plenty of action and the story does have a good ending.
