MidCentury Modern: 15 Interior Design Ideas is a one-of-a-kind book published by Leopard Print and written by Ivy Ngeow, an award-winning Asian author and architect currently based in London, United Kingdom.
An easy read for anyone enthusiastic about home decor, especially mid-century modern style, for the home, hotel or motel, this book is packed with practical tips to guide both beginners and amateurs in their interior design projects.
Beginning with an informative introduction to mid-century modernism and its principles of elegance and simplicity where “form follows function”, Ivy paired her years of expertise in architecture and design with writing to produce this professionally written guide book. Over fifteen chapters, readers can expect to find fifteen interior design ideas inspired by Ivy’s architectural and design profession with influences from popular TV programs such as the Queen’s Gambit, Mad Max and Twin Peaks, travel adventures to Miami and Vegas as well as Hitchock movies and modern American literature.
Overall, I found this book a very useful read as it balances both interior design theory with practical tips for application in everyday interior design projects. Personally, I love learning new tips and getting some interior design ideas and this beautifully illustrated guide book is very timely for my upcoming interior design project. For quick tips, I love reading the “hot tip” included at the end of each chapter.
One of my favorite chapters in this book is “Indoor Plants”. As I’ve started mini gardening just several years ago, learning about using tropical indoor plants not just for sculpture and color but also for contrast and architectural value is exciting! A key takeaway in this chapter is to learn to select the right type of tropical indoor plants to achieve the desired mid-century modern look using recommended plants such as the “Epipremnum aureus” (Devil’s Ivy), a fast-growing vine with heart-shaped mottled leaves, “Anthurium Andreanum” (Anthurium), a plant with dark green, glossy leaves and deep red, pink or white heart-shaped flowers as well as “Ficus Elastics” (Rubber Plants or Figs), a type of plant with shiny, rounded leaves in dark green or burgundy.
Another chapter that I like in this book is “Furniture With Thin Legs”. I learned that furniture with hairpin legs or slim tapered legs are designed to make it appear “floating” or lighter in mass than it is and are used in combination with glass. This is in line with the design principle of being light and transparent, making a room appear bigger, especially if it contrasts with a strong teal or jewel-colored interior.
If I were asked to give feedback on how to enhance this book further, I would suggest including some infographics to highlight the main ideas and “hot tip” in each chapter as key takeaways for the readers. In conclusion, I would give this book a 5 out of 5 rating. Keep it up, Ivy!
