In 1766 Schmutzer founded an engraving academy in Vienna. He trained numerous students there, including Carl Conti , Johann Jacobé , Kilian Ponheimer (father) , Johann Peter Pichler and Kilian Ponheimer (son). Schmutzer established the fame of Viennese reproduction graphics.
Despite the age of these drawings Schmutzer's style has a retained its elegance.
