The Moretti Crime Family #1

A Bullet Between Us

Rate this book
DAVINA
I’d walked into an alley where death awaited me.
Terrified under the brittle moon, I’d been left behind as blood swept into the pristine snow.
I’d closed my eyes and waited for the afterlife, welcoming it.
Death had never come for me, but it ended the life I once knew.
Now, I lived in fear, running from a world ruled by vicious men.
An organized world where power and violence had no limit.
And I was in the middle of it all.
It’d led me to him, Ilias.
But in this world, my nightmare was etched in the face of every man I stumbled upon.

I didn’t trust anyone, but my heart trusted him.
Even while my mind kept a bullet between us.

ILIAS
I was given an assignment, an order.
Failure wasn’t an option. Not when it meant her, Davina.
But how could I keep her alive? I was no hero. Just a man dressed as one, with a heart as corrupted as the same men I grew up with.

”I didn’t trust anyone, but my heart trusted him. Even while my mind kept a bullet between us.”

First ever novel by Kassandra and I’m in loveeeee 😍🥰. First of all can we appreciate the beauty of the cover😭 It’s so stunning 🤩 When i read the blurb I thought this was going to be cliché “girl sees something she shouldn’t; boy kidnaps her and they end up loving each other” but this DIDN’T happen. Like at ALL. I loved how K wrote this beautiful storyline😭. Whenever I had something figured out, she would legit turn up the chairs and make me go “huh?now what?” in a good way. This book had me guessing till the end.

”Davina was a contradiction to me. Never sure of what I should do, how to act, or how far I was pushing. Her signals always confused me, intrigued me, but mostly, they kept me searching for glimpses of more of her.”

Davina Cohen is the kind of character you can’t help but love. She has legit been through so much but still she comes up and is willing to find her place in the world. What i personally loved about her was that how she wanted to be able to protect herself and wanted to learn self-defence because in most of the books i read (specially mafia ones) women depend on men and hardly want to be on their own. I admire her strength and courage to stand up for herself.

”Ilias looked poised, confident with his own body and certainty to protect. That was true beauty.”

Ilias Novak is not your usual mafia hero and i liked that. I’m gonna be honest when i read the blurb i was like “he must be don” but no no you’ve got it all wrong😂 He’s actually been assigned the duty to make sure that Davina is safe. I MEAN WHAT?! Istg no book has said “fuck, you’re dumb” to me more times than this one said. Back to Ilias, the guy is so precious🥺 The way he cares for Davina is just so out of the world😭 The sacrifices he does for Davina. Gah, I’m so in loveeeeeee😩🤍

“I’ve been in this high since the first day I stared into your eyes.”

Also let me introduce to the reason why this book was even better- Boris. Y’all, meet my future dog🥺 I loved loved LOVED scenes which had Boris too😭 i admired his relationship with Ilias and Davina and istg i lowkey hate K.Dosal cause i just stopped fantasising about having a dog and then she fucking makes me wanna have one too when i can’t😭 I hate it😭

”And in this world, danger and death were no strangers to those who believed they could beat the odds of the dark underworld by foolish plays.”

The epilogue had me crying my eyes out😭 specially the ending😩
This is unlike any mafia book I’ve read. That may not work for some of you but for me, it clearly did and I’m so glad, I discovered a great author! I’m so excited for Lucca’s story! He’s the don and i really found him intriguing and can’t wait to see what K. Dosal has in store for him and Katia!

“If you see death coming your way, tip the scales. Look at it right in the eye, smile, strike, and run until we meet again.”

This is one of the "the cover made me read it" books and I thought this is a dark mafia romance?? But it was neither dark nor a mafia book(not really). The H is a cop(also Russian) secretly working for the Italian mafia🙄 he has "brothers" who brought nothing to the story and only annoyed me so much.
The H supposed to be protecting the h from another mafia and this whole plot was just all over the place. The MCs were so plain a little too insta love for me. There wasn't any development and there were so manyyy plot holess🤦‍♀️ when i started skimming I knew thats not a good sign. It took me a week maybe to finish it.

Now i definitely know that i need a break from mafia books😭

╰┈➤KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

🌸 𝐀 𝐁𝐔𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐓 𝐁𝐄𝐓𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐔𝐒 🌸 This is the first full length mafia romance book in 'The Moretti Crime Family' series. Spoken in 'dual perspectives' This is Davina and Ilias story.

After seeing this popping up in here a few times, like usual I thought I'd give it a go, and I'm so glad I did. I'd taken a break from 'Mafia Romances' which was my go to genre, mainly because they'd become same old same old, this one I really enjoyed, being that it wasn't the normal run of the mill mafia book, I would've liked a wee bit more action and wee bit more dark and grit thrown into the mix, but all in all I enjoyed this one, especially with a few twisty turns the author threw our way!!
“𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙨𝙚𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙝 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙬𝙖𝙮, 𝙩𝙞𝙥 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙨. 𝙇𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙩 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙚𝙮𝙚, 𝙨𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙚, 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙠𝙚, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙪𝙣 𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙡 𝙬𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙞𝙣.”

From the get go I was pulled in, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the life that she knew before will be flipped upside down. A snow storm had her leaving work early from the diner where she worked, on her way home she witnessed a New York Syndicate execution down a dark alleyway, he wasn't the only one that paid for his life that night, she was left for dead.

On the run, In hiding and having to leave New York behind her for good, with the help of a police chief she makes her way to Florida and is put in witness protection in a safe house. Ilias Novak is the man who has been placed in charge to protect her.

When it comes to Ilias, like peeling back all the layers of an onion there's more to Ilias that meets the eye. He wears a mask and walks a fine line between good and bad, but those two worlds will start closing in.

Spending time within each others proximity these two had an instant connection, and it doesn't take these two long before lines are crossed from a job to lovers. But when both their lives are in danger they have to go to the one place that will offer them protection and that's his brother who is in the heart of the mafia himself.

this wasn’t a bad start to the series, but i think i’m used to reading dark mafia romances so i was kinda surprised by how light this one felt (compared to ones i’ve read before, at least). i wouldn’t say it’s a bad thing tho, definitely not, it just depends on your personal preference. i still enjoyed this one a lot. Davina (h) and Ilias (H) weren’t your typical h/H in these mafia books. Davina had such a strong presence and i appreciated how she always stood her ground, despite what she’s been through. must protect Ilias, pls. i loved how he felt refreshing to me in a way where he wasn’t controlling or in-your-face, he was like the perfect balance of protective, but sweet. my favorite parts of the book were Ilias’ interactions with his brothers!! i love sibling or found family dynamics; i crave for them in any book and, because of the familial aspect in mafia books, they often appear here. also, a special mention to Boris, aka Ilias’ dog. i adored him soo much! <3 i’m super excited for Lucca’s story, i have a feeling i’ll love him. :’)

*thank you to the author for an eARC in exchange for an honest review*

This book was so unique!

Davina sees a crime she never should have seen. She goes on the run only to end up under the protection of a man who could be just as dangerous for her. She is traumatized and broken but she starts to feel something for him that awakens her again.

Ilias is a police officer with an agenda. He has ties to the mafia and was placed in his position very carefully to be of the most good to his familia. When he receives an assignment to protect a fragile woman on the brink of a mental break, he doesn't know why or for what purpose. When it becomes clear the role should could play, he is already in too deep to change course.

This book ad so many things I love. It had action and fear right from page one. Our heroine is put in a horrible situation and it makes her have to make some tough decisions very quickly. When she finds herself under Ilias' protection she can't help but notice him. When he tries to help her, she resists, she doesn't want anyone to care about her again, its just too risky. But they are so drawn to each other....

Ugh! The longing was so good, and when they finally give in... it was explosive. The steam in here was soooo good! Yes, Please! Ilias and Davina know how to GET IT ON!

There is also a dog names Boris, and I knew as soon as he came on the screen that I was a goner. I am a SUCKER for a hero with a dog and especially a big beautiful dog that he lends to the heroine so she can feel safe in her bed! UGH!

Sorry my review is all over the place, but I was really into it, I loved how the plot moved along and how the reveals happened. I also appreciated how the characters reacted to new information and secrets, because that can get so overblown sometimes. But this was perfect.

It also was the perfect amount of brutal for a Mafia story, I have lately been a little overwhelmed with some that I have read, but this one was perfect.

I loved what this author did and I can't wait to read the next in the series about Lucca!!

5/5 stars for me!

If you want to delve into dark romance, this book would be a great start.
Davina lives in NY. One night, leaving work, she witnesses a crime and she is left for dead in an alley. She is saved by a stranger and, afterwards, she is on the run from the very nasty people that almost killed her. She is set up in a safe house in Miami by a family friend.
Ilias is the police officer tasked with protecting her. He is not all hero as he has strong ties to the local mafia. Ilias becomes intrigued with Davina.
With the help of his dog, Boris, he goes about helping her overcome her PTSD and gain back her confidence and strength.

I really enjoyed Davina and Ilias together. Their slow burn romance was realistic and their banter was fun. Boris was also a very nice furry addition.

The story takes some twists and turns, it has nice elements of suspense, steamy sex scenes, but nothing is too dark or over the top.

I liked the way Davina's struggles are portrayed. The author definitely did her research into mental health issues.
Davina's character is well fleshed out and she is a good combo of softness and strength. And Ilias is a good balance for her as he is not the classic alpha hero. He has struggles of his own.

I think that what I appreciated most was that communication issues were not the plot here. There was a real story behind with Davina being hidden for protection and Ilias doing his best to help her.

All in all, it was a really nice book and I can't wait to read the next book in this series, which is an arranged marriage. Yay!

NOW AVAILABLE

"“If you see death coming your way, tip the scales. Look at it right in the eye, smile, strike, and run until we meet again.”

First, I fell in love with the beautiful cover!!!
Then I read the prologue and I was like... What the hell just happened??? OMG!!! I definitely need to read this story!!!
Of course, I made thousand assumptions based on the countless mafia romances that I have read in the past, but I couldn't be more wrong.
This story was anything like the most mafia romances and I was taken by surprise.
Davina and Ilias's story was so different and I enjoyed it very much...

"Fear is powerful to the human mind, and I was its victim."

Davina had found herself in the wrong place in the wrong time and she paid for that... Almost with her life!!!
At this moment, she is hunted by New York's mafia and she is going in hide, in order to save her life.
Ilias's life is complicated!!! He is with one foot in the law and one in the outlaw. He has been given a task and he is determined to succeed. Until he is meeting the person that he has to protect and everything's changing for him...

"He was my nightmare and I was afraid I would never wake up again."

"I was playing a dangerous game with one foot in the law and the other on a dangerous path."

Davina and Ilias's story was complicated from every aspect.
But while they were having many dilemmas to face in here, they were slowly falling for each other. But that's not always a good thing.
Davina needs to find a way to protect herself and to start trusting others again and Ilias has a life changing decision to make.
Can love bloom in the dark alleys of the mafia world when there are lethal secrets that are standing between them???

"He felt like a promise -hope. Gripping him and the feel of hope tighter, I didn't care about boundaries."

"This assignement was fucking with me. No, not the assignment. Because I knew what I had to do, guard and protect. It wasn't the task. It was Davina."

I liked Davina very much. She was a true survivor!!!
She got through something very hard and ugly, but her spirit never left her. Ilias made her trust again and to start believe in herself...
As for Ilias??? He was a true protector, even though he thought himself as a villain. The way he cared for Davina from the first moment and the way he took care of her was mesmerizing. Yep, he wasn't a hero, but he could be the hero in Davina's life!!!

"I was becoming attached to him..."

"I was no hero. Just a man dressed as one, with a heart as corrupted as the same men I grew up with."

I really enjoyed this story... my very first book by K. Dosal!!!
And honestly, I can't wait for more of this world.
There were many intriguing secondary characters in here, but the most outstanding figure was Boris!!! OMG!!! He was soooo adorable!!! I just fell in love with him!!!
And after the informations that I got in the end, I'm waiting like crazy Lucca's story, even though I wasn't his biggest fan in here!!!

"The bullet between us would soon be brought to light, leaving nothing to stand in our way."

did not live up to the pretty cover 😔

this was just.. okay. the first half was engaging, but i couldn't really connect with the characters. Davina (h) witnesses a crime committed by the mafia in the prologue and has to move to Miami from one moment to the next in order to escape from these guys (who now want to kill her). i understand that she has to run, but i felt like we don't really know anything about her previous life. doesn't she have one friend? did she like her job? did she do anything, really? we only get to see her hidden in Miami with some serious PTSD and falling for Ilias (H).

on that note, they met at 20% and by the 50% mark they were already having sex and had fallen for each other so... everything just felt too fast 🤷‍♀️

I may have an unpopular opinion on this book, but this didn't work for me at all. So much so, I couldn't finish it. There are too many open holes and gaps that I just can't get past.

These were some of my issues:

Right away in the prologue at the end of the fourth paragraph - She's walking trying to stay warm and feels danger. The next sentence says "the unusual sound turned to a whimper". Wait, something is missing here. What sound? She doesn't even mention she sees anyone or any hint that she's hearing something till this sentence.

After she is cut and left for dead she wakes up in the hospital. She finds out she was brought by her fake fiance. When he (Martin) comes in, we find out he's going to school to be a doctor and comes from money. He says he was just driving along and felt like he needed to go in the alley. Um, ok why is he driving in a bad part of town. And why does he feel like he was compelled to drive down that dark alley? Nope, I'm not buying it.

Oh and wait, she took the bullet that killed the other guy. All while she's unconscious on the ground before she goes to the hospital. When exactly does this part occur? Because how it's written it seems impossible that she could do this.

Then she is receiving texts from a burner phone that she is getting messages on from someone she doesn't know. She never responds to these messages. She knows that she is wanted by the bad guys because there are two "police officers" hanging outside her hotel room. They come to interview her but don't pull their badges out so she knows they are bad guys. Ok. So she decides to leave the hospital and Martin helps her.

They get to the hotel that Martin pays for and she decides she needs ice. Martin is about to leave but decides to stay. This is where the cliche of every horror film comes in....she goes to get ice but the ice maker is down and only works on the second floor. She takes the elevator down but feels like bad stuff is going to happen. When she gets back the hotel room door is ajar...lol. Then she escapes the hotel and goes to a bus station.

Another hole for me. While she's on the bus she gets another text that this mystery person will be waiting for her. Um, OK. When she arrives it's the police chief of Miami. lol, He knew her mom and thinks he can help. He was notified by the New York police chief he's friends with that she was a target. And this right here is why I stopped reading this book and can't go any further. If the police know in New York the "bad guys" are after her, why weren't they the ones there interviewing her in the hospital? Or trying to protect her? They leave her a burner phone and disappear? Yet know she's in danger? Or how about she's talked with no one. She buys a bus ticket to the exact location this guy is? So over the top coincidental. And leads to so many holes in the story that just create too many questions.

So I've decided to step away from this book. Which makes me sad. I had high hopes because I love mafia books. It's one of my favorite genres.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was my first read from this author and it sadly did not work out for me.

The heroine Davina accidentally stumbles across an argument over payment/money and witnesses a murder. After the two New York Syndicate-tattooed men spot her, she passes out and wakes up in a hospital. She freaks out when officers, or men posing as officers, arrive at the hospital to ask her what she saw or remembers. The guy who brought her to the hospital (who I thought was going to be the hero but he isn’t 😅) poses as her fake fiancé and helps her flee the hospital and gets her to a hotel. Well things don’t go well there either and she’s on the run again when an officer (who I next thought would be the hero but isn’t 🤪) who was friends with her mother says he has a safe house set up for her and wants her to get into the witness protection program because “the guys she’s running from are men he’s been after to take down for years.” Oh and she’s been getting random “run” messages on a burner cell. So Davina goes along and winds up in Miami. Here she meets a new police officer who IS the hero of the story. Ilias Novak is Russian and has ties to the Italian mafia. He’s looking after her in the safe house and teaches her self defense. Honestly his dog Boris was the best part about this read. Davina feels protected by Boris the dog and Ilias let’s her borrow him to sleep next to her at night.

This just was kind of a mess. Love based off attraction and I didn’t feel the chemistry/connection between the couple. The characters just feel flat for me and I was not invested. There was a lot going on and many under-developed storylines. Parts of the story were confusing at times and I had to go back to see if I missed anything (I didn’t). It took a while to find out who the hero was going to be, I legit thought two other guys introduced early on in the story would be the hero based on how much info and setup we were given for them, just for them to end up dead or just disappear from the story. 😅

I've got this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is my first book by the author and I can honestly say that I'm very pleased. I didn't know what exactly expect other than this is a mafia book and I loved it.

So the book starts with a girl witnessing murder and nearly being killed, going to protection program kind of and more...A lot is happening but you have to read the book to understand it.

I love the struggle Davina had with everything because it showed how real this can be and what a woman would go through trying to protect herself and everyone around her. I will be honest though and I will say that I kind of hated everything she had to go through only because if I were in her shoes, I would hate what happened to me and I will try to get myself out of it, but at the same times since she almost died I see why it's taken her so long to get through it and she is unable to do so.

At first I had like two guys that I thought would be her love interest, but I was wrong. Then we got another one and he is the love interest in the story and I love it. I wasn't expecting the first 2 to not be it, but I love it so much.

I was pleasantly surprised at what was happening in the book. I have to say that from the beginning the book had a kind of tempo and it was fulfilling it a lot actually. With most books I wouldn't expect there to be kind of like an "extra scene" but in this book, since it had that extra scene I was like: "Damn, I need this."

I didn't expect a few things to happen and when they did and I saw how it connects the whole story it made sense. The ending of the book get me crying, because it was so emotional and she remembered, which I forgot, but she didn't and it was just beautiful ending of the story.

I can't wait to read Lucca and Katia's story.

What is it about mafia romances that attracts me so incredibly, in a real life I would probably have died from fear, but reading stories about mafia organizations is so damn exciting.

This is the first book in The Moretti Crime Family series and the first mafia romance by this author.
I love her books and this one is no exception.

This is an unbelievable gripping and suspenseful dark mafia romance with all the raw brutal emotions and heartbreaking feelings.
The writing style is as engrossing as spellbinding and the story unique and fascinating.

The book begins with a terrifying mafia murder and follows the events of the consequences being a witness of it.

Davina's life was never easy, but it changed dramatically after she accidentally witnessed a brutal murder and nearly died in the process.
Her survival is a threat to many people and thus her life is in danger.

This book is a rollercoaster of pure survival instincts, anxious energy and of course a beautiful unique love story ❤

This story has so many twists and turns, that every time I thought I have figured the whole story out it took an unexpected turn that I haven't seen coming and I love it!

This mafia romance is nothing like what I've read before.
The hero's not the usual mafia alpha and the heroine is not what you expect at the beginning of the story.
Nothing is what it seems to be and everything is exciting and scary-gripping.
I loved every single second of it 😍

P.S. I can't wait for Lucca's story.

this book has some of my FAVVVV tropes/dynamics…

-tortured heroine
-mafia men (Bratva and the Italian mafia)
-mafia man and dirty cop
-i’m in love with you but a crumb of my heart belongs to someone else
-sweet yet possessive hero
-DOGS IN BOOKS YALL

if you like going into books blind, maybe stop here babe. no big spoilers but some lil ones

the first like 35% i was sooo confused but then i got it.
so Davina witnesses a murder that haunts her, and she runs away to Miami where she meets Ilias. he’s the cop that’s supposed to protect her in witness protection, but he’s also mafia and so the both of them get tossed into a mafia war together.

i didn’t really know who the male love interest would be but i was pleasantly surprised. i liked him, and his dog ofc🫠
i lied a little, cause i was still kinda confused by the end of this lmaooo. hasn’t happened to me in a mafia book for a while but there was a lot going on and a lot of underlying lil things i was missing. i’m kinda in a bad mood of reading recently so i can’t tell if this was a full 5⭐️ but i can say i really enjoyed this.

i loveeee a book with the trope of like i’m fully in love with you i’m spending the rest of my life with you but a crumb of my heart belongs to someone else. i feel like it’s so realistic.
overall, throughly enjoyed and definitely rec for a mafia book!

DAVINA AND ILIAS CAN BOTH HAVE MY KIDS.
TBH I NEED MORE BC I KNOW ITS REALLY UNFINISHED BUT OVERALL IT WAS A FUN DARK ROMANCE READ (not dark dark) BUT IT DID BRING SOME SPICE INTO😫🤌.

For Ilias think of a golden retriever TYPA guy but with very hidden layers that you would’ve never though about him.
UGH ILIAS IS SO UGHHHH.

FOR DAVINA THAT GIRL NEEDS MORE THERAPY THAN ANYONE RIGHT NOW (maybe not but it’s true) LIKE GIRL DOESNT GET A BREAK. THE FACT THAT SHE STILL DIDNT PUT HER LIFE ON PAUSE DURING EACH EVENT AND KEPT GOING WAS JUST SOMETHING THAT MOST WOULDNT HAVE DONE.

Boris the doggy😫. COME ON I CANT DO THIS REVIEW WITHOUT HIM. OMFG HE WAS SUCH A CUTE LITTLE PROTECTIVE DOG THAT EVERYONE WILL MOST LIKELY LOVE TO DEATHHHH. HEHEHE

This my first book by K. Dosal and while I liked it I just felt that the romance wasn't all there. Davina has been through something extremely traumatic and Ilias is there to make sure no one comes after her again. while he was helping her feel strong, the switch to their romance felt unnatural and forced.

The cover and blurb made me read it. It was NOT A DARK MAFIA ROMANCE. So the guy was in police and also brother of mafia. There wasn’t much to that angle he met thr that. Then it’s all avout the sex and the i was annoyed by the girl bcz one minute she is brave and next she is full of fear. Whtever. It wasn’t what i think it was but its still better than some mafia stories with same plot thats y 3 stars. This was okay. If you are not into mafia stories that much or the beginner in mafia stories this one is for you.

A Bullet Between Us is a new genre for K Dosal and I. Am. Loving. It!! There is so much mystery, intrigue, drama, and of course, romance. From the get-go you will be captivated and on the edge of your seat.

Our main characters are Davina and Ilias. Kassandra wrote two exquisite characters who are from opposite worlds, yet somehow mesh so well together. Davina finds herself in a situation where she needs to leave town and fast. She ends up in Miami where she comes across Ilias. Over the course of time, Davina and Ilias have evolved from a working relationship to more. It is beautiful to see Davina grow and blossom from beginning to end. She has a backbone, which will get her far in this new situation she is in, but also has the grace to handle anything (or almost anything😉🤷🏻‍♀‍).

Ilias (sigh), is this firm protector with a heart and what he does not see coming is Davina. It is stunning to watch him change into the man that Davina needs, yet remain firm and able to stand up to his ‘family’. It was dramatic, heartwarming (if you lived with a bunch of tigers and got to see their ‘softer’ side), and beautiful to see this band of brothers unite when things get tough.

I highly recommend A Bullet Between Us if you’re longing for a good mafia romance that’s full of danger, mystery and suspense. The love that blossoms and character development is top notch. I want to commend K Dosal for this new genre and I am here for all of it. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Fell a bit flat for me.

I enjoyed this book, though I didn’t really like it as much as I thought I would. A lot of the time the main couple feel flat and lacked depth that I like to see in most mafia books. I kept waiting for something to happen as I read the book, some sort of action, but after the initial opening scene with Davina the plot fell a bit flat for me.

Ilias’ brothers seem far more interesting than he does. He’s the youngest child, and not an official mafiso so he isn’t included in on the information. Being left out leaves him in the dark about things in a way that’s detrimental to the plot. He is constantly three steps behind and then aggravated about being behind with no solution to the problem and no way to keep Davina safe. That being said, I hope this is an interconnected series because I would definitely read his brother’s books for sure. I think Ilias’ dog stole the show in this book more than Ilias did.

Overall, it wasn’t a bad read. If you like shorter mafia novels that have a soft, easy to follow plot this is the book for you. I wish the author had taken the time to space some things out just a little. I think I would have genuinely enjoyed this book far more than I had if our main couple hadn’t lacked so much personality

Murder, mayhem and a dark mafia romance? Count me in! This was a brilliant first book in the the Moretti Crime Family series and focused on FMC Davina, after she witnesses a murder and survives the subsequent attempt on her life. Running to Miami, she's placed into the protective custody of Ilias... but he's far more than the simple Police Officer he appears, and they're both in far more danger than they realise.

This book was dark, so definitely check the trigger warnings prior to reading. I personally love a book with a bit of grit and enjoyed the mafia and underworld elements. I'm looking forward to reading book 2, A War Around Us, next and hearing the story of Mafia boss Lucca and his love (you'll find out who she is at the end of book 1!).

This was all over the place. Only good things were the book cover and the dog, Boris.

There were so many moments that I would go back a few pages and see if I missed something because it made no sense. Then I realized that’s just how this was written. Honestly, most of the book is a question mark.

A Bullet Between Us is the first book I have read from K. Dosal and it most definitely won't be my last. This book is one of the reasons why I love dark mafia romances so much! I was caught into the bloody clutches of Ilias & Davina's story right from the very beginning.
...

Davina Cohen is a young woman who witnesses a murder in an alleyway, which involved the New York Syndicate. Unable to keep her mouth shut of the incident she is captured and left for dead. Miraculously she survives and escapes to Florida and helped by the local Police Chief who assigns Ilias to watch over her. Unbeknownst to her there is more to meets the eye to this charming police officer, he has ties to the mob. Davina is an easy target and had no idea the amount of danger she has just put herself into as darkness looms at every corner. She wanted her old life back as a simple waitress trying to get by but with Ilias at her beck and call as well as her protector things start change.

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to Ilias Novak. He isn't your typical alpha hero which I really enjoyed. But he has secrets, tainted blood runs through his veins and he has connections that if anyone found out about he would be a dead man walking. And when he meets Davina he knew he was in trouble. This minx would be the death of him. The slow burn and instant attraction was undeniable and the lengths that Ilias went to make sure Davina was safe *swoon*.

It has been a very long time since I have read a mafia romance. After reading this book, my interest has been peaked again to check out this genre. I have K. Dosal to thank for this. The darker romance elements of this story is what I enjoyed.

It was not your typical mafia romance that I had come to think of. Where, the woman needs to be rescued and the man is there to rescue her. Yes; Davina was the woman and Ilias the man but they both rescued each other and made one another better. They were like two broken puzzle pieces that fit together.

The romance I would say is second in this book. Not to say that it is not hot and steamy between Davina and Ilias. In fact, you just might need a cold glass of water afterwards. What I mean by this is that the story itself is a good, strong one that allowed me to form close bonds with everyone in this book. I can't wait to read book two for Lucca's story. A Bullet Between Us is one not to be missed!

A Bullet Between Us was such a fantastic, intense read! This was the first K. Dosal book for me and apparently it was her first mafia romance - it definitely didn’t read like it. The story was very entertaining and a little different than most mafia reads. It definitely had enough twists and turns to hold my attention to the end. Both Davinia and Ilias were wonderful. Davinia had just been in survival mode for so long, but really found a willingness to fight for both herself and what she wanted. Ilias was definitely a different type of mafia hero. While he was still very protective of Davinia, he was also very sweet, caring, and willing to sacrifice for her. The book really set this up as a series with a whole bunch of characters that made us excited to learn more about. I’m really excited to read Lucca’s story and perhaps see more of Davinia and Ilias in future books.

This was my first read by this author and it definitely won’t be my last ! I had all kinds of expectations going into this story I read the prologue a while ago and to say I was waiting on pins and needles to find out what happened to Davina is a understatement and oh boy everything I thought I knew how this story would go it didn’t. All my expectations were blown away by this authors writing her storytelling was phenomenal there was mystery emotion suspense and the steam holy hell was it steamy! My heart hurt so much for what Davina had gone through I felt her paranoia her loneliness her anxiety but she was also such a strong character she persevered with the help of Ilia and Boris . I loved Viktor Arlo and Lucca I loved the loyalty these brothers held towards each other I’m so intrigued by this mafia family and I can’t wait for the next book in this series! This is a definite must read and one I highly recommend to all my mafia romance lovers.

This book grabbed my attention right from the beginning and kept me hooked the entire way. And I love how this starts with a bang, literally!

Ilias is not the typical mafia guy but instead he is so sweet the moment he meets Davina, who is so precious and I love her, that my heart was basically melting. She is dealing with PTSD and survivor's guilt from the events that happen at the start of this book and it affects her every single day. So the way Ilias makes her feel safe and helps her overcome her fears is everything.

The development of their relationship is so good. I love how they go from him getting assigned with protecting her to them having this deeper connection. I really felt their chemistry all the way. I love when characters go into this whole protectiveness mode and Ilias definitely stole my heart! And I love the balance between the emotional and playful moments with them.

I don't only adore Davina and Ilias but also the secondary characters who are so intriguing. I love the dynamic between Ilias and his brothers a lot. Sibling bonds just always get to me. I simply need Arlo's book, he is so mysterious and always annoyed so I wanna know what's up! And of course I could never forget Bo aka Ilias' dog, he is the absolute cuteness! The way he was protective towards Davina was the best thing ever.

The plot is amazing along with all the twists and I love the mafia world in this. It did take me some time to really understand everything and how it all works but I got the hang of it, and I really like it. I wanted a little more blood though but that's just me being a bit of a crazy person when it comes to the darkness aspect in mafia romance, haha!

But also at the same time I love how this focuses more on the characters and their connection as I feel like it needed to have that with everything that Davina deals with. Also like don't you just love that moment when you realize what the actual meaning of the title is? Because I sure do and it was so brilliant!

A Bullet Between Us is an amazing first book to a new series and I loved everything about it!

”I didn’t trust anyone, but my heart trusted him. Even while my mind kept a bullet between us.”

*I received this ARC from the author but the thoughts are completely my own.*

This was my first read from K. Dosal so I had no idea what to expect but this book did not disappoint!!

I absolutely adored Davina as a heroine, I admired her so much especially her strength as she experienced quite a lot and she’s a character I’ll love forever. I love how she didn’t conform to the usual stereotypes and actually wanted to defend herself.

Ilias was a character who really intrigued me and has definitely become my favourite book man of this year so far! I loved how much he protected Davina and felt for her it was heartwarming to see. I was so invested in their relationship was happy with how it turned out.

I can’t end this review without talking about Boris, he was the real star of the book and the cutest dog ever I hope to see more moments with him in the future!

K. Dosal did a fantastic job with this mafia book and I’m so excited to read the next om in the series!
