A good reference on the HIIT exercise philosophy --shorter but more intense workouts. Physiologically, we learn that this type of exercise tends to use fat for energy rather than muscle. That's why Usain Bolt can be the fastest man on the planet and still carry all that muscle. How much and what kind of energy we burn depends on what we are doing. HIIT allows us to stay in an anaerobic state, and use fat for energy. Push yourself into an aerobic status (think marathoners) and the body will use it all, including your muscle for energy. Have you ever seen a jacked marathoner? No. And now we understand why. Mr. Mathews balances the physical with a discussion in the mental/psychological aspects as well, including hormonal effects. I'd discuss more, but I have to get to the gym!
Paul W. Matthews' "Intense Transformation: Discover How HIIT—the Most Powerful Exercise to Transform Your Mind, Body, & Spirit—Can Activate Your Full Potential" offers an in-depth exploration of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and its transformative power. This book isn't just a fitness guide; it's a comprehensive manual for holistic well-being. Matthews leverages his expertise to present HIIT as a multifaceted tool that not only enhances physical fitness but also sharpens mental acuity and nurtures the spirit.
The first part of the book delves into the science behind HIIT. Matthews meticulously breaks down how short bursts of intense exercise can lead to significant physiological benefits, such as improved cardiovascular health, increased metabolism, and enhanced muscle endurance. He makes complex scientific concepts accessible, ensuring that readers understand the "why" behind their workouts. This section is particularly useful for those new to HIIT, providing a solid foundation before diving into practical application.
Moving beyond physical benefits, Matthews ventures into the mental and spiritual realms. He argues that the discipline and mental fortitude required for HIIT workouts can translate into other areas of life, fostering resilience and emotional stability. The author offers various strategies to integrate mindfulness into exercise routines, encouraging a balanced approach to fitness that considers mental wellness as crucial as physical health. This holistic vision makes the book stand out from typical fitness literature.
In the latter chapters, Matthews provides actionable plans suitable for all fitness levels. From novices to seasoned athletes, the structured programs ensure that anyone can embark on their HIIT journey and see tangible results. The author includes motivational tips, injury prevention advice, and nutritional guidance to support readers throughout their transformation. The practical advice is straightforward and adaptable, making it easy to customize workouts to individual preferences and limitations.
This book merits a 5 out of 5-star rating for its comprehensive, accessible, and inspirational approach to fitness. Matthews successfully combines scientific rigor with practical advice, ensuring that readers are informed and motivated. "Intense Transformation" goes beyond mere exercise routines, offering a full spectrum of strategies to improve overall well-being. This little book is rather like a HIIT workout itself. Short, intense, sometimes a challenge, but in the end it is worth the work.
For those that are not familiar with the term H.I.I.T. stands for High Intensity Interval Training. Many programs over the years have followed the HIIT principles. Among them Crossfit, P90X, Tabata, and interval training all have connections to the core idea of HIIT.
I was happy to see the author spend time on the benefits outside of sheer physicality. There is a component of HIIT that includes body awareness, mindfulness, intention and breathing. He also hits on the commensurate nature of HIIT and Yogic practice.
He emphasizes the use of mindfulness in HIIT workouts and the value of precision in movement over just throwing out a load of badly formed reps. This gave me a great deal of hope as I was reading. His emphasis on bettering your own performance is exactly where it needs to be.
Instead of the manifesto I was kindof thinking I would see, Mr. Matthews seems well read in the current state of sport research. He uses science to back up his writing, another feature I found I enjoyed.
Initially, I was afraid I was picking up a dude-bro type training manual. While he is positive, and ever encouraging the author is also well grounded in science, mindfulness and practicality.
I am motivated to go dust off my kettlebell.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Like a lot of people, I’ve added a small amount of HIIT training to my fitness routine. I knew it was good — a positive add — but I didn’t know how good and why until now.
Despite its cumbersome title, Paul W. Matthews’ Intense Transformation: Discover How HIIT—the Most Powerful Exercise to Transform Your Mind, Body, & Spirit—Can Activate Your Full Potential, gets right to the core (!) of the matter, helping readers understand how fully transformational HIIT training can be.
And what is HIIT training, anyway? Matthews explains it. “HIIT is a full-body system which can be done with or without weighted resistance,” writes Matthews. “It works by engaging your entire body leaving aftereffects for hours and days, including major boosts to hormones, fat burning properties and overall energy levels.” It’s not a fad, Matthews stresses rather a tried and true training method with ancient origins, which he explains in the book.
The action, of course, comes from action. Matthews’ approach incorporates spirit, mindfulness and very specific approaches to doing a wide range of exercise.
If you have even a passing interest in High Intensity Interval Training, or even training for personal best health, Intense Transformation may indeed be life-changing.
I workout regularly. It's helpful to understand why certain exercises and exercise routines lead to positive results. This book makes that understanding very difficult. It's not practical. For one, and this is a biggie as it's the title: HIIT is not defined.
What's "high" versus "medium" or "low intensity"? How is this measured? What's an "interval" in relationship to the period of "high" intensity? What's the benefit for the body of pausing between periods of "high" intensity? How long should each phase last?
The Greeks are referenced ad nauseam. Yet these references point to the Greeks doing "high intensity" workouts. That's not HIIT. If this information is in fact here, it's difficult to tease out admidst flowery quotes. I get the sense that a short paragraph would serve my needs. This book only created frustration and questions for me.
In a somewhat condesceding tone, the author states many times that "This might surprise you, but..." Nothing surprised me, except that the book isn't true its title.
I can't fault the grammar or sentence structure, and I caught no obvious typos. That's a plus.
A Solid Read The author delves into spiritual, mental, and physical practices that are relevant to HIIT. The argument is made that it is not just for bodybuilders and body bunnies, but the average person can also benefit from HIIT. There is also some interesting history regarding the ancient Greeks and Romans.
