After learning of the deadly League of Lazarus tournament, Damian Wayne has a new mission: winning the tournament and prove he is the greatest fighter in the DC Universe! But first he must find the secret island where it’s all going down! This brand-new solo Robin series will force Damian Wayne to find his own path away from both sides of his family! New mysteries! New supporting cast! First appearances of new characters! And lots of fights!
A really great start! I’m not sure what happened to Alfred, but I had to pick up this book because I love Damian as a character. The vibe is really solid, it does feel like the set up to every martial arts tournament ever, but I like the art, I love the little details added to Damian’s character here and I’m excited to see where it goes next!
3.5 stars. Pretty solid first issue. I was afraid I might have been lost as I’ve never really read any comics with Damian but I was able to keep up just fine. With what Damian set out to do, I had a feeling it was going to end like this. However, it was an interesting ending.
Actually a surprisingly good first issue! I hate Damian to my core, and he's my least favorite Robin ever, but this issue by Joshua Williamson is fantastic! Beautiful art and the story is basically Robin in a Mortal Kombat style tournament! What more do you want?
(Single issue comic book review) I generally like Williamson and am excited for new comics. While I grew weary of Williamson on Flash, he was also churning out a series coming out twice a month, and I think that hurt the series.
Robin, in this case is Damian, and the script at least in the opening arc seems to be Mortal Kombat.
That's probably enough to hook me.
Williamson does a fairly decent job of showing his chops. It's far from perfect. An action comic like this, needs to be concise and snappy. It bogs down in conversation that it probably doesn't need to.
Still, it's generally clever, it's mostly exciting, and Gleb Melnikov draws a comic that matches the needed level of excitement.
This is more ambitious than Brisson's Iron Fist which ostensibly was the same idea- Van Damme Bloodsport type stuff. There's good and bad in that. In the long run, it should ultimately a good thing. There's at least enough potential here, that I hope to stick with this series for awhile
So for months we knew it would be Mortal Kombat-esque, which of course has a fun element around it. It's great to see more familiar faces like Ravager and Hawke, and some interesting new faces like Flatline and Mother Soul. I also appreciate the confirmation of Damian's age being 14 years old, though the manga-reading was... interesting.
Mortal Kombat with the usual DC trope of debuting a million new characters in every issue. Pretty weird flow to the story, seems very rushed and choppily edited. It's Okay, but it's nothing great. The concept is more interesting than the outcome.
Cool first issue. Robin deciding fuck everyone, I'ma go to a island, and Mortal Kombat my way to being a badass. Cool idea, but will it last? We'll see.
This is exactly what I wanted from this book. Okay, so I have to be honest. I was going to read this eventually. I will read literally any and every DC comic (the good, the bad, the ugly, the really really ugly). And I will extra always read any Bat-Family book. But, I had to buy and read this one this week because it features Rose Wilson aka Ravager. I LOVE ROSE. She is my favorite character of all time and I will buy and read anything she appears in. However, the more I heard about this series, the more interviews I read with the writer, the more and more I was getting hyped for this. Which made me nervous to actually read it!! But I'm happy to report that it did not disappoint.
I think this was a great introduction to this new story and the character work with Damian was really great. The action sequences were super fun. The art was lovely. The different Bat-Family characters all searching for Damian was so cute, and Batman's monologue about him was everything. I'm also super excited that we are seeing some really fun characters here. A bunch of 90s characters we haven't seen for a while are going to be popping up through this series and I'm so here for it.
One thing I'm intriqued with but I'm not sure I'm totally in love with is the fact that
I have to comment on the Rose Wilson content or I wouldn't be able to live with myself. I have always loved the dynamic between Rose and Damian in the past so I'm really excited to see them paired up here again. I'm really hoping she takes on a role of trying to look out for him and has her whole anti-hero thing going. I'm ready for Rose to get back to that part of her comic history. (Kind of desperate for her to become a member of the outsiders or something someday, maybe Batman will take her in if she keeps his son alive...) Her dialogue here was really fun, I loved her calling Damian "little bird" when she was trying to look out for him. Like I said, I'm really loving that they are planting seeds that she will be looking out for Damian and I'm hoping she is there on some kind of mission or something. I'm just excited to see what she gets up to here!
Overall, I'm really interested in this book and the first issue was SO MUCH FUN. I'm so excited for next months issue...if only I could read it now.
Solid start. Agree with others on the Mortal Kombat vibe. Given this story, it's odd (to me, anyway) that Damian shows up in Action Comics 1030 in his new costume. I thought I'd spoiled something by reading that first, but apparently not. Curious to see where it goes. It is Lazarus Island, after all. ;)
Bro this was fabulous. The story: 90% The art: 100% The Main boi: 200% All around a wonderful issue. Damian Wayne, Robin, the Son of the Bat, strikes out on his own to fight his way to the top. Only, he thinks he deserves the top. What will happen if he fails to get his way? You and I both need to keep on reading this series to find out. All in all, Damian was lovely. I have loved him for a long time. His growth from intoxicating brat to likable hero is one I treasure and look forward to seeing through. Also, the fact that it’s literally cannon that he comments on what he’s reading is so personal and I love it. And he reads Manga. Please. I need more nerd Damian. I would read a whole series about Damian just being a nerd. He doesn’t even have to fight anyone. I just need more domestic superhero content, please and thank you.
Truly, I enjoyed this issue and can’t wait to read the next one. 9/10 “C’mon, Hana, you m u s t have a plan…”
Probably more like 3.5 stars but worthy of being rounded up instead of down. The artwork is solid. The story is a quick (maybe too quick) lead into the Lazarus tournament. Robin has run off to join it apparently needing to prove he is the best fighter out there. The rest of the Bat family is now looking for him. Along the way we see both the smug and arrogant side of Damian as well as the more thoughtful, innocent child remnants of his personality through an imagined conversation with Alfred (a highlight of the issue for me). I was hoping for a little less action and a little more story building but overall this was a good start to this series.
This started off really strong. Like really strong. This is my first series with Damien, but it was easy to follow, and easy to connect with him. Seeing Nightwing and Babs always makes me happy too. Damien is an interesting character, overly cocky, but skilled enough to pull it off. The manga in the middle threw me off, but I loved it. The plot was fun and intriguing yet the end of this issue felt like a major let-down and I really hated it. I'm gonna read the next issue to see if it picks up, because damn, the beginning was good, but wow was I disappointed by the end. Cheap "cliffhanger" that was completely unnecessary imo, but who knows maybe they make it work.
Was a huge Tim Drake fan growing up and still have my collection from the Chuck Dixon run. Not as big of a fan of Damian but thought I'd pick this up to add to the collection. One and done. However Williamson's writing and handling of the character has definitely drawn me in for #2. Absolutely loved Damian fighting The King Snake as a throwback homage and the surprise ending is a great cliffhanger. Is Robin back? I hope so.

Was really excited about this book coming out and I was not disappointed. Recent Batman and Detective comics issues have already shown Damian trying to go off the grid but now we officially learn why. Loved Damian talking shit as well. I know not everybody likes his personality but I’m hopeful this run can last.
I really LOVED this first issue. Flatline sure is interesting. Can’t wait for next month’s issue. Always liked Damian and his -tt- I wonder what will happen next. Actually didn’t think the first issue would end like that...
That was a surprisingly good first issue for a great character like Damian is. The Flatline character seemed really interesting and the cliffhanger at the end was really promising. It's a series that i'm definetily going to continue to see where it goes.
I didn't know I needed Damian reading manga in my life, but here we are.
I spoiled myself months ago on how this 1st issue ends, but it was fun to read it. I feel like that's going to be the mood for the rest of this run: fun!
Omg this is such a sick concept! I have a bit of a gap in my knowledge of damian compared to the other robins, I know the basics but I thought this might be a cool way to see more of him and I’m really excited to keep reading now! Flatline seems cool as hell too, that last big panel was great
A great kick off for a fun new series starring a fresh take on Damian Wayne as Robin. I am very excited for what Williamson has in store for my favorite Boy Wonder.
