Very nicely done first installment of a new supernatural series taking place in Victorian times. It's kind of reminiscent of the Showtime mini-series Penny Dreadful, only here the queer content and characters are the total focus. The art is attractive and confident without being slick/soulless and it all goes down super-easily. I'll be happy to read following issues.

It's 1895 London.

Oscar Wilde is on trial for criminal homosexuality.

Three people from different walks of life struggle to live within society's immoral morals, values, and beliefs.

When the evils of society threaten to pull London into complete darkness, the trio finds themselves fighting to destroy the darkness that strangles their identities; in doing so, they might have a chance to shed light onto their authentic selves.

This is the setup to Craig Hurd-McKenney's graphic novel, Some Strange Disturbances.

Let me state upfront: I love this novel, and I look forward to reading future books in the series.

Why do I love it?

Two reasons: the artwork and the complexity of the story.

The artwork is very well done; it illustrates the horror, the fear, the anger, and the hope of the characters. Want proof? Buy the novel and check out pages 25-27. The artwork, the storytelling, and the theme of racial and class divisions permeate these emotions.

The storytelling is so top-notch. Hurd-McKenney gives us three distinct yet connected characters to care about and root for through the evils that come upon them. There is Prescott Mayfair, a closeted homosexual psychic; Delilah Quinton, a black choral performer who, because of her celebrity status, is seen as "better" than blacks with less prestige; and The Comtesse, a young woman thought to be possessed by her parents. The story not only takes us on each character's journey that pits their identity against society's beliefs on homosexuality, race, and class, but it also sets the characters well into the historical time period and the true life-or-death aspects that each character faces because of who they are. The research done by Hurd-McKenney to illustrate the period, such as human zoos, Wilde's trial, and the declaration of insanity or demonic possession of those people deemed different, "other," heightens the tension, emotions, and verisimilitude of the story.

I truly cannot say enough about Some Strange Disturbances. So, instead of rambling on and on like a fangirl, I will simply end by saying BUY THE BOOK, read the book, and ENJOY.
