As the only woman on Terra who could Lift, Alora was accustomed to hiding her differences. On Earth, she had learned not to trust anyone but her older brother, Jesse. But when Alora's two worlds collide and all her worst dreams come true, she refuses to accept defeat. In spite of reason, logic, and self-doubt, she gambles her future to save the one thing that matters most in her life, and it works.
Or does it?
Her dreams of Terra may finally be a thing of the past, but her life is far from her own. New enemies appear around every corner, and everyone wants something from her. But perhaps the most concerning development of all are the secrets hiding in her own memories. Can Alora hold on to the one person she loves in all the world(s)? Or will the price of saving him become too steep?
I really enjoyed book 1 until the ending when the plot went sideways on me. Adrift continues in that vein, and honestly, I didn’t really enjoy the plot at all. I felt like it was lacking.
I’m only giving it 2 stars (“it was okay”) because the romantic love triangle is actually keeping my interest while the other aspects are disappointing me.
Sadly, the heroine began to grate on me. She came across as whiny, impetuous, selfish, and unlikable. To quote this poor, picked-on woman:
“I’m sick of being told what to do.” “I’m done being someone or something I’m not.” “I’m sick of being threatened, heartily tired of being afraid!” “I’m tired of all of this!”
Well, guess what, chica? I’m sick and tired of you being sick and tired. Oh, and also, if I hear the name “Jesse” one more time, I’ll off him myself so we can be done with it and move on.
She was honestly such a snot.
Cases in point: - She screams for help in desperation and then uses magic to quickly stabilize Jesse as everyone jumps out of bed and runs to her room. When they arrive she calls them all worthless in her mind because she has already taken care of the emergency. - In the first book, she is willing to destabilize an entire world, possibly consigning countless innocent people to die, in a last-ditch effort to save her brother’s life. This attitude continues in this book. She keeps saying ridiculously immature, ignorant things like “Maybe Earth isn’t worth saving,” and “I wish I could just take John and Jesse and let the rest of Earth burn.” - She accidentally murders someone who is helping her in order to prolong Jesse’s life a bit more and then confesses that she would do it again, knowingly. In fact, she said something like, “If God were looking me in the eye and telling me not to, I still would.” Yikes. And after all this, when she asks strangers to help her and when they balk, she hypocritically thinks, “Here I am forced to use his lesson so that greedy selfish people will do the right thing!” Ugh! I can’t stand her! She is such a self righteous hypocrite. - She disrespects the men who are helping her. She bosses them around, snaps at them, pulls rank, gets all violent and threatening with the ones she doesn’t trust, replies to their valid input with sarcastic snark, and rolls her eyes at them. I don’t want them to be so demasculinated. It’s painful to witness. - The author currently has three smoking hot men in love with Alora (the FMC) FOR NO GOOD REASON. Two of them actually elbowed each other in their attempt to score the seat next to her in the back of the SUV, no joke. And of course, because they are so far beneath her, she rolls her eyes and disparages them in her thoughts.
Yeah, so anyway. Don’t think I’ll read the remaining two books. :/
But to end on a good note, this author writes a good love triangle, which is super hard to do. I like both guys, and she isn’t stringing them both along. So the tension is compelling and I’m totally enjoying that aspect (even if I don’t know what they see in her).
Content: Language- no swearing Sex- no sex or talk of sex. Some kisses. Narrator- fine. I can’t blame her for the snotty MC. I listened to it on 2x speed, which is what I usually do when I’m not enjoying a book very much. Cover- meh
How I rated the series: Anchored (Book 1) - 3 stars Adrift (Book 2) - 2 stars (Not continuing the series)
This is the same plot as the first book. She broke her brother’s boundaries this time though and killed someone to save her brother from dying even though he will die. I will not be reading the third book because this book ruined it all for me. Her relationship with her brother seems to go beyond your typical familial familiarity and she is completely dependent on him. The relationship between the two of them is not at all healthy.
4.5 stars this book keeps the tensions high and excitement rising. As book two in The Anchored Series, we start to see more and more of the overall story unravelling and get more backstory on who Alora really is. I love the Egyptian myths the author is tying into these books. I am also super intrigued with Ra and Kahn's roles as the series continues to develop. The conflict is getting more intense in that the stakes are bigger than ever before and as a result I couldn't wait to keep reading and see where the story went. I'm already wishing book three was available, I really want to know what is going to happen next! There is a bit of a love triangle developing, which I'm not always a love triangle fan, but this one has me more intrigued at the moment and I enjoyed the romance elements. This book was YA clean with no graphic content or references. I'd say it's appropriate for teenage audiences and adults alike. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
A great continuation of a promising concept. I really enjoyed this second book in the series and read it very quickly (always a sign for me that I’m super into a book). This time I was straight into it, having read the first one not long beforehand 😊 This book has great depth in relationships between friends and families; this is built on from the last book in a natural way. The “inexplicable” attraction is finally explained, but still, she doesn’t let fate rule her life! I enjoyed the concept of the Egyptian gods being people whom others celebrated as gods due to their great power, nice take on this as it makes them more real and relatable. In this book, we learn about the Worlds of Erra, Rra and Ā and what may be memories of Alora’s former life (or some wild Egyptian dreams!) I liked how she turns up on Erra with no memories and has to work it all out, and how the personalities on the others Worlds and Earth are similar but not quite the same. She has learned from past experiences and you can see that thought has gone into the Worlds-building in this story. It seems to be up to our hero Alora to make the ultimate decisions about the fates of these Worlds, but she is keen to seek advice from others, which has a lovely humble nature to it without shirking her responsibility of it. I get a bit worried when she’s just tumbling from one life-threatening situation to the next and am glad when she gets a break to practise, chat and eat! Seriously, I love how much this girl eats in all her realities!
Warning: if you haven't yet read book one, then do so now!!! This is NOT a standalone read, and you will be lost without having previously read the first in this series!!
I just finished this.epic read and my goodness is my heart still racing!! It's filled with even more craziness , revelations, mysteries, Egyptian myths, adventure and oh sooooo much more!!! The world(s) balance and survival seem to be in the hands of one fierce, big hearted, brilliant and flat out awesome young lady. Trying to.learn and fit.together all the missing puzzle.pieces of what's actually going on is harder than it seems. Is she who everyone thinks she is, and which side will she land on? Maybe she needs to form her own side and lead from her heart. There's so much excitement, adventure, and action within these pages. I'm blown away by the complex and multilayered character development and world building. If you take the chance on this latest series I don't think you'll be disappointed. It grabbed me by the shirt immediately and wouldn't let me go. I mourned the end of this book, and can't wait for the next to be released!!! Get ready to become a true follower of this series. Choose sides, pick a favorite, who do you think is in the right? Who do you think has truth on their side? Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime....or two...or more 😉
IF you have have not read book one, you might want to do so before reading this book (and my post) because you could get lost without the right contexts. The review will have some small spoilers, hopefully you get enough to want to read the book cause I couldn't put it down.
This novel continues the story telling of Alora, who is the first woman to have powers of any kind on Terra. In the last novel you read about her life between earth and Terra but in this one it is a little different. Terra is down, and Alora looks forward to some dreams finally! When she sleeps now though, she is dropped into Erra and not in the best shape since she has no memories at all on there.
On Earth things are so very chaotic, she is now a "wanted criminal" because of things that happen with the Terra people being dropped into their Earth bodies. Read the book, to find out more.
She also finds out who she is and you get some of the long ago back story of before the prison worlds were created. I won't say who she is, but it was quite interesting. The ending had me thinking what will happen in the next novel. Obviously she will be teleported into the next plain, but what will happen there and what will happen to her on Earth.
Hope this entices you to check the series out, so far it has been a great read and I can't want to read more. Hope to hear this in audio-book format.
The only reason I forced myself to get to the end of this book was because I enjoyed Book 1, and even then I had to speed up the audio to 1.5x speed to get through this lengthy, meandering drivel, with characters repeating themselves, spending the whole book squabbling, and telling secrets to random people for me reason. The only thing I liked about Book 2 was the cover. The main character, Alora, was a sympathetic character in Book 1 and a completely unlikeable one in Book 2. Having spent Book 1, mooning over Guy 1, she's busy pashing Guy 2 in Book 2 and then rolling her eyes over the guys fighting with each other. This is the worst kind of love triangle, the kind that seems to be there because there is no real tension to any other part of the story. I cringed every time things were meant to be getting romantic. In one part of the story, Alora steals the life of a woman who had been helping her, and claims she would do it again to save her brother. The scene then carried on to a discussion about how many breakfast tacos would be needed to feed everyone (who were still alive). That God it's over. I won't be continuing the series, which is disappointing because Book 1 was good.
This was a good follow up to Anchored. I was grateful that some things were answered even though there are even more questions raised up. Elora is dealing with a LOT of stuff and a lot of pressure and responsibility that she was never prepared for. She's spent her whole life worried only about herself and her brother and now the lives of literally everyone in the world are on her shoulders. I think it's surprising she's as together as she is. I've seen some reviews that find issue with her obsession with protecting Jesse, but the two of them have been everything to each other for basically all their lives. He's been her big brother and her parent and her best friend. Also, with all of the massive decisions she's being forced to make, I think that her focus on saving Jesse is probably a way to deflect the other weight. I'm not saying that's a good thing (and I really hope she starts to realize the obsession is growing unhealthy), but I do think it's completely understandable. I'm still impressed that Baker can develop multiple interesting worlds and balance the different characters in the different places and the differences and similarities.
Well, just when I thought I had it all figured out, the whole train of thought turns upside down, falls off the track, hops back on, then goes backwards thousands of years! Just when I think I know what is going to happen next, I am totally wrong. In this book Alora has more than just Earth and the flipside Terra to deal with. The prison world of Terra is no longer in existence, but Erra, Rra, and Ā still are. Erra gets the most explanation and not much more than a quick stopover in Rra and Ā. I’m guessing there will be more on those worlds in the third book, which I am impatiently waiting to be released! The love interests of Alora ebb and flow so not really sure who it is she will eventually end up with, or who is going to survive to the end of the series. I think I enjoyed the first book more because it was such a different idea and in this book the other worlds have already been introduced, but I absolutely recommend continuing with the series. Brush up on your Egyptology, too! Another one I had to read start to finish in a day!
I just read book 1 of this series 'Anchored' and was completely blown away. It was very fast-paced very exciting and kept me on my toes. Allora is a girl who is living parallel lives on Earth and Terra. On earth, she is a terrified minor all alone in the world except for her dearest brother. On terra, she has a community she is raised in. A mostly happy childhood when suddenly it is revealed that she is an anomaly and she has to run and hide for her survival. How her two worlds collide? How she improves her powers, the magic of everything all made for a very engaging read in 'Anchored'.
In the end of 'Anchored' things take a surprise turn. She pulls a 'Pet Sematary' to bring someone back from the dead. From then on , everything is just downhill. Was a little surprised how it went from super exciting in part 1 to struggling to read through in Part 2. There was also some severe lack of imagination like works are called Terra,Erra, Ra and A. What !!! A bit too much , too many worlds brought in and none of them particularly exciting. Somewhere it lost the plot.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Wow! This book, this series, these worlds...Alora - they have captivated me and keep me wanting more.
Who knew a journey to self discovery could lead down so many pathways. Alora is faced with some many different challenges and obstacles. Some new and some familiar faces to help her along the way. Just when she is starting to come to terms with everything, new things start happening, new revelations present themselves and she has to work through them.
There was a lot of action and adventure throughout the book. Friendships, loves, allies, enemies - all the relationships change and leave Alora questioning. All except for Jessie. He is still her constant, grounding relationship.
I can't wait to read book 3 and see what happens next.
Maybe not quite as good as the first book because there is so much happening and characters being introduced that it gets really confusing. Plus the world this author has built is confusing. But by the end I am understanding so much more. Alora is still the main focus with her brother Jesse. We learn so much more about Alora and what she can do and where she came from. Jessie’s soul is leaking and she is working to fix that. We see what’s on Erra and Raa and A. We meet Alora’s ancient Egyptian dad. So much action. Mostly all while dreaming. This series is a crazy ride. I am onto the next book. I don’t this series is for everyone, but I am recommending it.
Oh. My. Sweet. Apple. Pie. I am loving this series!! I am DEVOURING these audiobooks. I haven’t fed my family in days. (KIDDING, but I did listen to this book every spare second I had) Book 2 just keeps piling on the intensity and I am loving the Egyptian theme that is tying it all together. We learn more about Alora, and who she is/ what she can do. The love triangle is still going strong, and by the end I literally couldn’t decide which man’s team I want to be on. Lots of mystery, but also lots of answers to questions from the first book. Just when you think you have it figured out.. PLOT TWIST! It’s an amazing YA fantasy book!
I enjoyed this story as an audiobook. This story is narrated by Jennifer Jill Araya. This story is part of the Anchored series and must be read in order. So if you haven’t seen my review for “Anchored” start there.
I enjoyed seeing the different sides to Alora and how she is beginning to truly piece together who she is. I hate what it came to for her to realize this but ultimately without her having these events in her life she wouldn’t be where she is. I love that she has a friendly face in Erra even if she doesn’t know how she knows him while she is there. I think seeing both sides of the person really shows their inner self and shows her who she can trust.
I love that this book picked up where the first one left off. It is gripping and suspenseful but also magical and dreamy (haha). It's amazing how creative the authors mind is with this series and it gets you addicted quick!!! You become so attached to the characters, the storyline, the lands, and everything in between. Even those you hate, you somehow love at the same time.
It takes true talent to draw you in this much and keep you laser focused like this book left me.
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title within the series set box. (Audible)
What lengths will you go to to save a loved ones life? A young woman has been given an awesome gift, and yet there seems as though it is a very heavy burden. She is warden of four different worlds where supernaturals are held, away from their human selves on earth. It's part of something that happened in ancient Egypt, and the worlds are unravelling bit by bit. What can one woman do?
This one took about 20 days to get through. I had a lot of days where I was more interested in my audio book. There was a lot of hiding and planning in this book, it felt a little bit like a filler episode. The last five chapters were entertaining but I wouldn't say there was a huge pay off. Gonna take a break from this series and read something else for a bit. But I do plan to read books three and four.
The parts that were good were really interesting and exciting, unfortunately that’s as only maybe 1/3 of the book. The rest was kinda boring and dragged. Overall, the plot is definitely interesting. It just doesn’t hold my attention for long. I wanted it to draw me in and keep me there, but it just didn’t. So I won’t be continuing the story, even though I do want to know the ending a little bit, just not enough to keep reading.
Great continuation of the story! Bridget is an amazing story teller with great world-building and character development. Amazing book one, I really love the connection between Alora and Jesse and the friends they've made. There's another world Alora has to face (Erra) and her strength and endurance is admirable.
Bridget’s creativity shines through in this series! My mind is always blown away by her storytelling. Bridget seamlessly goes between 4 different worlds and the past in this book.
The main character Alora has many tough decisions to make in this book. On this journey, she has to figure out who she can trust and it just might be the people she desperately doesn’t want to trust.
I loved it! Alora is such a great character! I always feel like I am with her through everything! The concept of Terra is amazing! I have yet to be disappointed by anything written by Bridget Baker! She has a unique imagination and really brings her characters and landscapes to life. I can't even begin to imagine what new adventures await in book 3. I received an advanced copy of this book.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was an excellent sequel, full of those twists and turns that make you want to continue reading. It is such an incredible story, and the addition or Erra, Rra and A, as well as the ancient Egypt twist was epic. Bonus points for the Birthright series Easter egg, well incorporated and well written
I loved this book! It started right where it left off! I was very happy with the world building, I felt like I was always standing right next to the protagonist. It was a really amazing book, the plot was just fast enough tht I felt like it was constantly moving, but not so fast I had to reread the same chapter twice just to understand it! Can't wait for the next book!
The second installment continues with a exciting fast pace where we learn more about Terra. We learn a lot more about Alora and her talents. This book delved some into the Egyptian myth and I’m looking forward to seeing how that develops in the next installment. Very clean YA dystopian fantasy series. I really enjoyed the narrator as well. She’s a great voice for Alora.
I like the story. It picked up right where the last one ended. The only problem that I really have with it is that it is starting to get too many layers.
They have 4 different prisons plus Earth and now they added ancient Egypt to the mix.
I want to know what happens next so I will start the next book soon.
A wonderful action adventure with a twist straight from Egypt. The world developed for this series is very captivating. The characters are mixed in and out to keep you coming back to see what's next. I had a hard time putting it down. I listed to audiobook and the narrator does a fantastic job of bringing everything to life.
I am dying over here! This has been such a great page turner. The suspense, the plot twists, the love interest(s)! 🥵🥵🥵 This has officially been my most favorite series this far in my TBR journey. I haven’t been this pulled into a story in a long time. I am loving them so much that I just bought paperbacks of the entire series to add to my home library.
I am really enjoying the books in this series. Having people on Earth as well as in the different prison lands is fascinating with their different abilities. It is hard to know if they are good or bad or just flawed like so many of us are. Great writing makes me want to start the next book as soon as I get some housework done.
Great second book in the series! I was so immersed in the new worlds the author created! The parallel worlds aspect is so creative and fascinating, and the plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the characters and their qualities. I can't wait for the next book!
