Kind of perfect.
If the series had ended here, I could have been happy. That's not to say the next volume isn't great because it is.
But this did an exceptional job of wrapping up the main storylines and left me with a smile on my face.

description

You'd think it would feel hokey, but since this is basically a cozy mystery series disguised as an alien sci-fi comic, it actually hit all the right notes.

description

Of course, even with the government on his trail and Harry's ship coming to get him, there will still be one last mystery our hometown alien doctor/detective needs to solve. This time it's the kidnapping of the little girl who was always able to see his true form. On the day of her mother's wedding, no less!

description

But what about Asta, you say?
Well, just read it.

Harry's finally been signaled that his ride home is here. But will he go? I like all the little stories here. A lot of the book is just about the life Harry has made and the little things going on in his friends' lives. I do miss the mystery element of previous Resident Alien stories. I am over the Harry and Asta "Will they, won't they?" drama. But this has always been this quirky little book about small town life where the main character happens to secretly be an alien.

For those of you wondering about the TV show. It is the same premise but wildly different approaches. The show is all wildly dark humor and a showcase for Alan Tudyk's acting prowess. The comic is Murder She Wrote with an alien.

Harry returns from New York only to discover that he might have finally gotten his wish: a ride back to his alien homeworld! But what is Harry’s home now: the one in the stars or the one he’s built in the small town of Patience, Washington? With a government agent hot on his trail, he’ll have to decide soon because his ride’s here!

Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse close out Resident Alien with Your Ride’s Here, and, like much of the series, this sixth and final (for now) book is a fine volume in what remains a fine series.

Nothing that big happens in this book but Hogan keeps throwing in elements so that it’s never a dull read. There’s a BB gun sniper, children being abducted, a wedding, and a mysterious stranger appearing in town, some of which play out in the background and get resolved as quickly as they were introduced.

But that kind of subtle storytelling is what I admire most about this book. Hogan/Parkhouse are in perfect sync here, showing the reader both big and little stories in the panels. The mysterious stranger is brought in quietly, lurking in the background initially, while, at the bachelor party, the lady cop possibly starts a romance with another stranger, and the love between the police chief and his wife is seen in their interactions and feels real. It’s mostly inconsequential stuff but Hogan/Parkhouse make sure not to waste any space without offering something up to the reader, if they’re looking for that detail.

That’s also my main criticism of this book: unless you’re a huge fan of this series, you’re not going to be too affected by anything you read here. Harry and his on-off “romance” with Asta is just meh to me, and, the most promising storyline here, the mysterious stranger, kinda fizzles out into nothing - although Harry’s decision on should he stay or go was unpredictable to the end. There’s nothing presented here that’ll blow your hair back or stick in your mind for very long afterwards. It’s really well done, both writing and art, but this book is equivalent to a decent episode of a soap or Murder, She Wrote.

Steve Parkhouse is such a talented artist. I loved his colours throughout this book, particularly in the dream sequence, as well as the brilliant, artful covers. He can also pull off both dialogue and action scenes with panache - the break-in scene was great. And, as I noted above, his panels are full of small details, alongside characters’ facial expressions that complement the scenes - he’s a true master of sequential art.

Maybe the greatest success of this series is how Hogan/Parkhouse have successfully created such a lived-in world and made realistic small town people/life the central feature of a series where the protagonist is an actual alien! Resident Alien never felt like a sci-fi series and, in mixing in elements of sci-fi, crime and slice-of-life into its stories, it avoided any genre tropes and managed to create its own unique atmosphere, which is something.

Resident Alien: Your Ride’s Here isn’t an amazing story or all that memorable but the dependable creative team of Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse deliver fans, one last time, a decent finale for this title.

A charming end to the ride.

Long-time readers of the series won't find too many surprises here, but a satisfying conclusion indeed.

I've really enjoyed this quiet little series. It's a very slow burn, in that each book focuses on a new area for Harry (the disguised alien doctor) to explore, whether it's a crime, a lead on finally getting off the planet or figuring out how honest he can be with the human friends he's discovered.

There's not a lot of action, or set pieces or hugely tense moments, it's all just driven by the characters and how they all connect in these sleepy little town.

Even the release schedule for these books seem appropriate. Months go by in between books, like nobody is in any rush to finish this series. But, if this is indeed the last book, it's a fitting finale for such an interesting series.

Probably a 4.5 rounded down.
This volume was a letdown after the excellent stories in previous volumes.
Lots of story lines wrapped up. But at least one of the endings was dumb. To say more would be spoiler heavy.

I am going to wildly and without any evidence suggest that the powers that be did some arm twisting to ensure there are future alien doctor detective stories to accompany the TV show. This is not the end.

The trailer makes the TV version look like a broad farce (albeit one which still slightly tempts me, just because of Alan Tudyk). But the comic has always been more of a meditative, wistful thing, pretty much cosy crime American-style*, with a stranded extraterrestrial learning about humanity by posing as a small-town doctor and investigating small-town crimes amid lots of pretty rural backdrops. Longer than the various miniseries have been before, this one set itself up as a finale to the story so far – though to my less than total surprise, the door (or spaceship hatch?) remains open for further instalments should the show be a smash hit. But if this is the end, it would still work as a fitting and moving one, and concealed behind that big reversal were other, more surprising ones. Besides, I was never really here for the plot; the appeal is in Parkhouse's faces, human or otherwise, as they perfectly catch reactions to the vicissitudes of life; the landscapes, especially the sweeping nocturnal ones counterpointed by gleaming craft from beyond the stars; and the compassionate if somewhat exasperated eye with which Harry regards his unwitting hosts: "People. These tiny creatures, scuttling around at the bottom of an ocean of gas, on a speck of rock hurtling through the endless void...yet they think of their lives as epic romances. And perhaps they are."

*I'm dimly aware America does have its own cosy crime tradition – I see enough books on Netgalley with 'murder' in the title, but covers in cheery colours with a cake and/or a cute animal taking the focus. But I've never read or watched any, I don't particularly want to, and in any case, though the setting of Resident Alien is over the fishpond, the creators are both veterans of the British comics scene.

It's not a big story, it's a collection of small ones, and each is solved or resolved way to smoothly. Disappointing after so many enjoyable volumes.

Well that might be it for resident alien, maybe a vol 7 but the author isnt sure (according to the final pages). As a whole it is a great series, I think I like the detective/crime aspect the best. It felt like an x-file turned on its head. I also really appreciated the relaxed style, nothing gory or shocking or adult really. Just good story telling.

This volume was a little slower but it was a nice ending

Your Ride's Here concludes the Resident Alien series in typical gentle fashion - no going out with the bang here. The feds are on to Harry and Harry's alien compatriots have finally zeroed in on him, but more importantly, there's a wedding to attend and some local ne'er-do-wells on the loose. Harry and Asta must also finally confront their will-they/won't-they status before Harry returns home.

The twist () did catch me by surprise and fit in with the low-key drama of the whole series. All of these Resident Alien stories are lovely reading - makes you want to invite someone in and offer them some iced tea or lemonade (everyone is always offering each other drinks in this series). Even as lovely reading, though, I can't say the series was particularly memorable or noteworthy. It just kinda washed over me pleasantly.

Oh man! That was spectacular. The first couple issues were a bit of a let down as the mystery this time around didn’t quite grab me, but then that wasn’t the real focus of the story. So things pick up and it’s ... well ... spectacular. What an ending.

And I say no more.

Except that EVERYONE should read this series. It’s beautiful. With wonderful characters and situations that you really get caught up in.

And I say no more.

comics harry is such a good character. he has his alien quirks but isn’t made out to just be a goofy alien child like he is in the show. his relationship with asta is so good as is every other relationship he has in the comics, especially dan!! love dan!! i love how he made a point to let asta know that his decision to stay was about him!!

I loved the series, and my 4-star rating reflects that. This volume brings the story to a conclusion (with room for additional episodes if the author wants), and ties up loose ends. But it seemed more like a fizzle than a rousing finale, even though the elements were there for that finale. Oh, well. At least it continued to have all the warm fuzzies of the rest of the series.

Great end to the series. I thought it came out of the blue and was maybe a bit unrealistic, but still great. :) I wonder of the TV series will end the same way.

My erudite son Matthew strives arduously to keep his papa firmly rooted in the 21st century. Apparently it ain't easy. When he learned that I was an enthusiastic fan of Syfy Network's "Resident Alien," he promptly bought me a compendium of the first three issues of the Dark Horse comics on which the television is based. Once I read this multi-volume and placed it on the bookshelf between James Hilton's "Lost Horizon" and Homer's "Iliad" (where a book written by Peter Hogan belongs, the other books on the shelf indignantly inquired "What the hell is this?" There are several thousands of books in our home library but these books are the first comic books to integrate our shelves, rather like the blockbusters of the post-WW residential real-estate market. In order to make these interlopers more acceptable to their neighbours, they are sometimes called "graphic novels" rather than "comic books." Controversial British writer and commentator Giles Robin Patrick Coren said, about this, "To call them graphic novels is to presume that the novel is in some way 'higher' than the karmicbwurk (comic book), and that only by being thought of as a sort of novel can it be understood as an art form." I was not much enamoured with comedian Alan Tudyk when he played Mr. Nobody in the first season of "Doom Patrol" (2019). The role of Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle, a shipwrecked alien in the Colorado mountain town of Patience, is perfectly cast and Tudyk is amazingly adept at vivifying his caracter. How curious that the Colorado mountain scenes are filmed around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The Native American art, drawn by Steve Parkhouse, is remarkable in its authenticity. Unfortunately it looks more like Pacific Northwest Coastal Indian art (Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Gitxsan, Haisla, Bella Bella, Bella Coola, Salishan, Wuikinuxv, Kwakwakaʼwakw, Ditidaht, Makah, Coast Salish, Chimakum, Quileute, Suquamish, Willapa, Chinook, Tillamook/Nehalem, Kathlamet, Daʼnaxdaʼxw, and/or Kwakiutl) than the art of the Apache, Comanche, Shoshone, and Ute people more connected to what is now Colorado.

Amazing. Thoroughly Enjoyed !

“PEOPLE. THESE TINY
CREATURES, SCUTTLING AROUND AT THE BOTTOM OF AN OCEAN OF GAS, ON A SPECK OF ROCK HURTLING THROUGH THE ENDLESS VOID... YET THEY
THINK OF THEIR LIVES AS EPIC ROMANCES... “

Resident Alien: Volume 6 Your Ride’s Here promises a step in keeping his identity secret and that is exactly what happened.

Resident Alien: Volume 6 Your Ride’s Here by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse follows Harry as he attempts to keep his identity secret when outside forces begin to encroach. The story is suspenseful, reflective, humorous.

The writing/prose was well written and the world-building realistic.

The pacing of events are smooth, one can clearly see how the events segue into one another and I was delightfully surprised at Harry’s decision.

However, I did not like Harry’s supposed soon to be love interest, I feel they did not have any chemistry and I have not seen any romantic like scenes from them.

Journeying with Harry through his adventures was exciting and I am excited to continue the series!

SPOILERS! (You have been warned.)

I adored this series. Every second of it: The mystery, the character interactions, the observations on humanity (good and bad), the ending--with our favorite resident alien choosing to stay on earth and the secret agent heading off with the aliens.... I mean, it was perfect. I loved that there wasn't this huge climax where we're evil, or the government is evil. It was so refreshing to just have the "antagonist" (secret agent) tell the alien, "I can see you're a good guy who just got stranded here. I just wanted to believe in aliens and see it for myself." I mean... some faith restored in humanity! (At least, fictional humanity... but these days, even that's something!) Everything about this series just felt right and I loved it!

A nice conclusion to a very enjoyable series. Not REALLY much in the way of mystery in this volume (indeed, after the first three volumes, the series becomes almost more of a slice of life/scifi drama with mild mystery elements), but that's because the focus is almost entirely on Harry deciding where he belongs and everything else that happens in the plot is largely to build drama around that critical decision, showing Harry just how much of a difference he's made and how close he's grown to the people of Patience, but also just how much danger he's putting himself and others in by remaining. Overall, I enjoyed this series a lot, far more than I expected after watching the pilot of the SciFi series "adapted" from it.

What a sweet ending to Harry’s journey of trying to get home, realizing a home is made and not a place. Definitely hoping we get that seventh volume, but if this is the true end, I’m very pleased.

”Nobody tells me anything.”

This one was jam packed with action and tension as it brought a lot of storylines to a finish in a way that was snappy but didn’t feel over-rushed! I really like how concerned Harry was for Honey, even though she was the biggest risk to his safety.

Overall, I’m so pleased with this series as a whole and I’m always going to keep it in mind for recommendations. Next step is trying to convince my dad to give it a go!

This is my first book in this series, and I really liked it. The alien is apparently not seen as an alien, except for at least one girl child who sees him how he is. Also the woman he likes seems to be of Native American descent and her father talks to her in dreams telling her about the alien. I really liked the creativity and originality of the story, and the artwork is awesome.

I received an e-ARC of this book via Edelweiss by the publisher Dark Horse Comics. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

In the final installment in the series, Patience is home to a big wedding, some budding romances, and Harry receiving word that his people are finally coming to retrieve him. Meanwhile, the main government agent investigating Harry finally reveals what his plans are. Will Harry make it home safely? Or will he be left on Earth? A decent ending that leaves things open enough for future stories, but if not, concluded all the major story lines in the series.

I'll recommend this series any day

I really enjoyed this series. I'm sad to see it come to a sort of close. The creators leave room for more, but...only if it feels right. Again, I hope to see more, but I also appreciate a story that lets us readers imagine where things went from there. Maybe ending on a high note instead of running things into the ground.

All in all, I was surprised and found this series a delight to read.

Another episode in the continuing adventures of Dr. Harry of Patience, Washington. He's actually a stranded alien, but most others see him as human. Harry participates in the social life of the town, tries to figure out his relationships, solves some crime, etc., all while worrying about what to do when his "ride" gets here, which seems eminent.

I like the slower pace of the graphic novel series, the rural location, and the recognizable folks in Harry's work and social circles.

A perfect ending for the comics version of this story. (I know there are more volumes already.) All of the major story threads are tied up neatly but neither predictably neatly nor with any shocking twists, just a sort of "Huh, I didn't realize that." mixed in amongst the "Of course"s.

I'm not entirely sure I want to read the next volume but I probably will.

If you ever get the chance to sit down and read the entire series all-at-once or close to all-at-once, I highly recommend it.

Between volumes 5 and 6 I watched the series on Syfy, and I forgot that the comic books do not have the humorous. I actually kind of like the humor of the TV series.

Ultimately, I just didn’t think the “alien” aspect was as important here and I feel as if that should have been more of a focus.

Nevertheless, am glad I discovered and read this series.

I enjoyed reading this very recently published volume of the series. However, I don’t know how I feel about it because of the ending.

I will not spoil anything, and if you’ve read the previous 5 volumes already I know you’re gonna read it anyway so I hope you enjoy the read as much as I did.
