Ever since I was a toddler, I have been making up stories. I’d entertain anyone willing to listen to my wild fantasies about unicorns and gargoyles and amazing people. At 13, I started writing the stories down. At 23, I finished the first book that was, in my opinion, good enough to publish.

I spent three years trying to publish my book, Jaunten, the old fashioned way. The problem was my story was outside of the norm for young adult fantasy – it didn’t have vampires or the supernatural in it, it was clean enough to earn a PG rating, and there wasn’t any dark overlord to defeat. No literary agent would pick it up because it didn’t fit the “fantasy formula” that all of the popular books did.

I put the idea of having my book published off to the side for a while as I finished a Bachelors in English at Middle Tennessee State University. But as I worked on my third degree, the idea of being published came back to me. This time, while working as a paralegal, I had a better grasp of the laws involved of doing self-publishing. For six months, I did a great deal of research in how to do self-publishing the debt-free way.

It was hard. I was working full time, going to school full time, and living on my own. I never really had a break. I was always working on something. At times I felt like my brain would just go into meltdown from having to learn so many different things to make my idea work.

After six months, I thought I knew enough to publish myself. I put Jaunten out as an ebook, created a website and forum so that fans could communicate with me, and spread the word as best I could. Within three months, I was selling internationally. Within six months, I was making enough to quit my day job and sit at home, writing full time.

After six months of writing, publishing, and building up a reputation, I started to be approached by other people wanting to emulate what I did. I soon realized that there was a niche out there waiting for me to fill it—a place where original fiction could be published and released into the world. As of February 2012, I started my own publishing house, called Raconteur House. Since that point I have signed on four additional authors (not including yours truly) and am attracting more in a steady stream.

I have continued to write and publish the rest of the series through my House. When I’m not writing or editing, I like to go out into the community and give presentations of how to be an author. It’s actually really fun to talk to all of these people who want to be authors. Most people think that you can’t make any money being an author—actually, you can. And you can do quite well. It’s just a matter of working really hard, having a little talent, and knowing how to market your books. All I’m doing with these presentations is giving people the know-how to make their dreams come true.

While it’s true that you don’t need a college education to be an author, I encourage everyone to be as educated as possible. I have a lot of experience and education that most people don’t, and that’s what gives me an edge in writing. I’ve lived in places as obscure as Tehachapi, California and other places as large as Salt Lake City, Utah. I hold three different college degrees. I practice two different martial arts. I think I’ve tried every life experience that came my direction. All of that is incorporated into my books, and that’s what gives reality to my worlds and characters.

Even if I abruptly stop selling books tomorrow—which I don’t see happening—I would still continue to write. Creating characters and worlds is that much fun. Once you start, you become quickly addicted.

Nice satisfying conclusion to a trilogy

Finished the book as soon as I got off work and I am happy that I had it pre-ordered because I had enjoyed the first two so much.

I think that the author really nailed what I want out of a reading experience from this trilogy. It had humor, intelligence and romance. We got to see our main character grow and we also got see other characters from a different perspective because of the time travel which was really neat. It has been a while since I read the first two and I might be wrong but it felt that amidst the dangers they had to battle in this one there was room for humour more so than in the other ones.

The relationship between Mei Li and Shunlei was wholesome and me being the emotional reader had to hold back tears when she got thrown back to her own time and their reunion.

As another series by the same author the main character is not the strongest mage but rather someone with a keen intellect and a superb memory. Unlike other series where the main character gets more powerful by gaining skills throughout making them kinda ridiculous Mei Li remains the same in a way. She gains confidence and knowledge as well friends and allies. I enjoy that she works with others rather than being a lone brooding character determined to do everything by themselves thus causing more trouble (Am I alone in being frustrated by this trope?)

I know there are others like me that will wonder if the series end with a happy ending and I can happily report that they do get their happy ending after 5000 years of waiting.

Definitely a series I will be re-reading.

I hope that the author has more books like this on the way.

This was such a great ending to the series, though I still wish we had more time with these characters, they're just so enjoyable to read about!

While I was sad when I opened the book and saw that the author had completely skipped the 10 years in the past, I thoroughly enjoyed the part of the story I did get. Fun world-building, enjoyable adventure, great characters. I really enjoy this author’s books! Maybe I’ll get lucky and she’ll write a 2.5 version, covering the skipped adventures of those 10 years that I was really looking forward to reading…

This completes the trilogy and it was quite satisfying with all loose ends tied up and reasonable certainty of Happily Ever After for Mei Li and Shunlei.

After using a spell to go into the past, expecting to arrive just a few years earlier and stay only a short time, she returns from her trip to 5,000 years in the past where she spent 10 years as the first Tomes and wife of Red Dragon Shunlei. In the present, it's been just 3 days and Shunlei, now a Black and the Master of all dragons is thrilled to have her back and able to speak of their time together long ago.

But that'll have to wait since there are a number of dire magical threats to the world and, if her trip to the past wasn't what she expected, it certainly afforded her a lot of experience and, time permitting, she's pretty sure she knows how to deal with everything. But it's all coming to a head at once so she'll have to rely on many others for the final success.

What I really liked about this whole trilogy is that people behave the way you wish they always would. Bullies are roundly defeated. People are honest with each other and treat each other with respect. And those in charge listen to suggestions from people with more experience or knowledge. So if you prefer a lot of angst and infighting and nasty politics, you'd best look elsewhere.

Raconteur has characters feel real, so real while I dive through this series

The plot of these 3 books is amazing, each book feeling full, not rushed, but driving you to keep reading. Nothing in her writing ever makes me stop, with a "what" because things don't line up. It never feels as if she is just filling space. All of it counts, and does not drag.
I also appreciate that there aren't any typos or usage of the wrong word - this author has correct grammar and vocabulary.
You become attached to her very real characters, even the side characters of the teams, or just people they encounter. No cookie cutters, with everyone alike.
I really appreciate the skill of her writing, which is why I read everything I can find from her. I often read it on my Kindle, then go and buy a paper bay so I can share it with others and hook them, too.
If I could only get them in hardcover, then our little village library would add them!

One Of The Best Endings To A Trilogy-Ever!

I read A LOT! And a lot of fantasy on top of it. This, by far, has been one of the most enjoyable reads I’ve had in a long time.

I generally wait until all the books are out in a series, so that I can keep track of the storyline and the characters. After awhile they can really run together, and mesh into one another. This one stood out in its uniqueness in so many ways, it was the last thing to worry about that.

I actually read the first two in this series, and had to wait less than a couple of weeks for the final to be released.
It was well worth the wait!
Twists and turns abound, all coming together in a very delightful, cohesive manner.
I have a new favorite author and imagine I’ll plow my way through the rest of her books in no time!

Aaahhhh that hit the spot!

Since I just read it, I just have to say that was SUCH a satisfying ending to this trilogy! (At least I think it's the ending). Just perfect. I seriously just love this story and Mei Li and Shunlei and their companions. Mei Li is back in her original timeline in this book, and finally getting to deal with some of the big problems she had looking over her. All the ends I wanted to be tied up were. I definitely had to be reintroduced to many of the characters from the first book and missed some of the ones from the second book, but that's just the nature of this story, since it involves significant time travel. And let me just say, it was sooo wonderful seeing Shunlei reunited with Mei Li in this book! Poor guy, he deserves all the wonderful things.

Highly recommend this book and series! It doesn't disappoint!

I accidentally started reading this series before all three books were out so I was super excited to read book 3 when it came out. While I enjoyed the book, I felt like it was a bit rushed, especially at the end. I wanted more time with the characters and, while this is actually a good thing because it means the writing was good and made me care about the characters, I think the ending was paced too quickly. The author probably thought that spending more time in Kovel would be repetitive and boring, but I think detailing a few more days here would have helped it feel long and exhausting. As it were, I felt like the author just told me that three months had passed and it was tiring. It also would have been nice to have more relaxed time with Mei Li and Shunlei as they just spent all of their time running around trying to save the world. Overall, very happy with this series and hoping that Honor Raconteur will write another series set in this world (perhaps a future Tomes).

How do you gain 10 years of experience in less than 3 hours? You do what Mei did - travel back in time (see "First of Tomes"). Now that she has the experience, it is time for this apprentice to save the world, if only to have her wedding thereafter. I marvel at Mei's ability to take everything in stride - kidnapping, dinos, annoyed demons, vengeful godlings and the reappearance of her master come to mind - and can only hope that I show even a fraction of her coolheadedness. (Not likely, I know.) This was a worthy completion of this trilogy, but I really hope that the author goes back into this universe again, because it is so much fun!

I received a copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Returning from her time jump into the past, Tomes has limited time to resealed three demons and stop the magical destruction of an entire city. Good thing the dragons are ready to help.

Why I started this book: I've stalled out on all the books that I'm reading this week... it's too hot to do anything.

Why I finished it: Raconteur provides very creative worlds, but an adventure novel that focuses on the planning for, and exhaustion after the battle but skips the fight... is not my cuppa right now.

A refreshing series!

I think what I like most about these books is how very capable the main character is. She is a true problem-solver, someone who does not simply react to problems in life. Instead, she collects data, plans with intelligence and foresight, recruits help, and works to turn setbacks into advantages. I have not come across such truly smart, capable characters often. It made reading these books delightful… I never once had the urge to scream, “Stop, don’t do that, it’s a stupid idea!” A refreshing change!

Fine third of trilogy

Mei Li and dragon husband lead mage and dragon teams against supernatural enemies but they need and get help from local God against Gong and Korval Below. This author likes trilogies but there is room I think for a fourth book, starting with huge wedding celebration.

It was well worth the wait

The only things that would make this book and trilogy better would be another book and or a longer epilogue where Mei and Shun get to have kids and grow their family. Although another book with more fun adventures would be awesome. It was worth losing sleep to read this trilogy straight through.

Decent Series. And Dragons.

This was a pretty good series. Definitely can be considered YA if it's not already.
Throughout the books I did find some jargon that pulled me out of the story, such as Catch-22 being used. Modern things that just didn't fit into the world.
On the other hand, I really do enjoy how the author builds world's and characters.
And, well, Dragons.

I stopped reading before I'd even gotten 50 pages in due to an open door love scene.

Honestly, this series just makes me uncomfortable on a few levels. Demon catching and sex scenes just killed it for me. It wasn't erotic, but it was spicy/steamy and I'm still upset about it. Knew I should've just skipped it altogether, but thought it might not go there again.

Live and learn.

Loved the series, but had a lot of issues with the pacing, especially in this one. At times the story dragged and the ending felt rushed to me. I also have the feeling that the story overall is incomplete - with all the discussions about future plans and re-organising the system I felt a bit cheated to miss out on all the politicking.

Good, a bit more of the same but still a good story. This is the last one or I would prob keep going. It would be nice to have some different people help with all the different voices but still, great listening and I will look for some more by this author. Very clean reading, no cursing or drawn out sex scenes. None of that is needed to make a good book.

Good

I liked the ending of this book and enjoy most of it. I found I wanted more of Mei with her dragon as a couple - 5000 years is a long time to be apart. This felt like too much running around putting out fires not enough relationships for me, especially as a final book.

Wonderful wrap up!

Sooo good! As much as I hate to say good bye to beloved characters, I love a good ending. Hopefully we will see more of this world, if not more of Mei Like and Shunli.

Enjoy it..

It was a good ending to the storyline, however I felt it was a little flat. I had hoped for more depth, twists & turnings. However it was still a good story

Good to see the happy ever after finish

The characters are wonderful and quirky. The plot is complex. The world building is superb. I hope in the future the author will write more books in this universe.

The only bad thing about this book is that it is the last in the trilogy. I didn't want it to end! I would love to read more books set in Kaleria.
