I teach high school English and am pursuing a graduate degree to become a Reading Specialist. I'm committed to staying in the classroom, as administrative roles don't interest me. Instead, I am using the skills learned from my courses to enhance my teaching, and my reviews of these coursework texts will assess their effectiveness in that goal. While The Administration and Supervision of Literacy Programs targets literacy professionals in organizing and supervising literacy programs, it does focus on providing instruction at all grade levels and for different types of learners, professional development, student assessment, writing, technology, and parent and community outreach. I found the discussion of the science of reading most useful and the deep concern for closing the achievement gap that has become more prevalent across the nation. The text includes examples, observations, research, and specific guidelines for improving literacy instruction which will definitely make my classroom more effective. Goal achieved!
