What a fun read! This is my type of book about spirituality, with curse words and all. The author takes you on a journey to learn awareness. The situations and people are real and not holier-than-thou. The lessons I learned from this book were incredibly helpful to me. I have been currently experiencing my own "earthquakes" over the last year and could truly understand the advice given in the book. The only thing I regret, is not getting to hang out with Lenny in real life!
I highly recommend this book for anyone seeking "enlightenment" without the usual BS of a spirituality book. I never even rolled my eyes while reading this book.
I read all kinds of spirituality books and have zero issues with swearing (it's my second language). This is the first book I've ever returned. Unable to continue to listen to the author as they bounced around like a Jack Russel on speed. Really sad as the intro sounded great.
I've read many self help books, some great, some mediocre, but I've always gained some insight or skill from whatever I've picked up. This book however, stands out from the crowd and really resonated for me personally. One of my main gripes of some self help books is the abstract, greater being, universal descriptions that just go way over my head. This author has recognised this and had made plain and clear what it all means as if coming from a friend. I would humbly suggest that reviewers who are irritated by this are not really being "aware" (sorry) of what the author is successfully aiming for. This really is an effective ground breaking book on being spiritual, I can't recommend enough.

Mind-blowing. Utterly mind-blowing. Touch and Taste. So simple but feels revolutionary. Being aware. The 'Lack. The Mindfulness Beach B*tch. Good exercises. J. Spirituality for Badasses is an amusing (and honestly helpful) self-help book that guides the reader on a journey to discovering themselves and their spirituality. Depressed? Anxious? Frustrated? You're not alone. The author explains how he was the same way, until he became involved in spirituality. But this isn't the same old preachy or so sweet you get a cavity sort of spiritual book. It's a relatable, humorous, down-to-earth book containing a liberal use of swear words. If having a potty-mouth offends you, this book is not for you. I found it to be a book that was easy to dive into. The author has a way of connecting immediately with the reader, and the journey along the way is filled with jokes and some a-ha moments that will have you realizing that maybe this whole finding yourself and being one with spirituality isn't such a bad thing after all. I rather enjoyed the short, bite-sized chapters. It made it easier to read on my own time while also feeling as though maybe I was seeing things through a new lens. It's not a book that slaps you upside the head with religion, spirituality, or anything else along those lines. It gently takes you by the hand, guides you into the passenger seat, and takes you on a ride through an alternative approach to discovering mindfulness and the like. 4 stars!
This was a really great book and truly impactful. I appreciated the casual style of writing and the storytelling. At first some of the stories and analogies didn’t quite land with me. Then when I understand the lesson I started to relate the stories and analogies to my own life. It wasn’t long before I was following the messaging quickly and feeling the deep impact of the content. The directness of the messages adds to the impact. Highly recommend!
Sometime in about 1981, my friends and I wanted to totally waste a day. The goal was to stay busy and accomplish nothing. We decided to memorize all of the words to “Rapture” by Blondie. Thanks to this book, that day is now the second biggest waste of time in my life.
First spiritual book that I have read cover to cover and what a rollecoaster. I have the workbook to look forward to! Would love to meet J, Lenny amd the Monks ha
Thank you J,you have opened my eyes to a whole lot. Fear and awareness and of course ego!!
Audiobook is the way to get best delivery on this book. Could not stop listening or laughing. Content is excellent. A light deliver for serious material. A refreshing break from traditional spirituality books. Warning, has language. That may be one of the best parts. Friggin hilarious and great material! Highly recommend for those who want a lighter view on spirituality.
I'm not one to put much faith or promise in a self help book. What makes Spirituality for Badasses different for me is the author's approach. J. Stewart Dixon talks directly, not around the bush and he doesn't really hold back punches. He really seems to understand how folks have lost themselves in the heavy of life. No matter what that thing is bringing someone down, it can be let go. While reading, I felt comfortable to just go with it and enjoy the book in front of me. It was sinking in, if I wanted it to or not. I was getting it, if I thought I needed it or not. ... Spirituality for Badasses was fun to read. There are great points that were made and ways that brought me to a more self awareness while the instruction was presented in a real life, down to earth, funny and entertaining way. I think the title gives it away that this is a totally different kind of experience and it truly was.
J. Stewart Dixon asks the reader to ask questions about themselves without really asking anything of the reader. The questions are deep. It is completely relaxing and enjoyable and I laughed out loud. I honestly think the author would want that to happen. Laughing is joy. Feeling joy is a good thing. Being happy is the goal. And with all of that, yes Spirituality for Badasses is stirring and absolutely thought provoking.
Spirituality for Badasses is a journey, a road trip, an adventure and J. Stewart Dixon is the tour guide. The destination felt like an awakening of my own self empowerment and a little bit like giving me permission to feel it, to feel good.
Every now and then the author stops the car, literally. Shows the reader how to breathe and be in the moment. To really be in the moment, no matter how we are feeling, to feel it. No matter what we are doing, to be aware of it. To be self aware, aware of all surroundings and all actions. The ride and the adventures the reader is taken on felt like examples of life. How we react, how we feel, how our emotions can get away from us. The speed, the drop, the frenzy, fear, rush. Then when there is nothing to feel, what is one willing to do to feel?
It’s an exercise and it sounds simple enough but obviously most of humanity avoids it. It’s not a quest of getting everything one wants or everything going in the right direction all of the time. It is real life happening and allowing oneself to be part of it under any circumstances. Even down to simplest thing like taste.
Ok for context, my fav book for over 40 years has been Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott. Spirituality for Badasses is now my favorite (sorry, Rose but you're #2 now).
This book is so deep and light, funny & insightful, that there is no way NOT to have some growth each time it's read. The first chapter, I swear I felt as if I had read the book before; it just resonated with me that strongly. The style of writing kept me engaged & interested, whether I was sober or high. The timing of the book is dead-on where I am now, & is what I need at this time. I can already feel some of my muck coming up, & I actually anticipate dealing with at least some of it this time.
I read through it this weekend & plan to reread it again as soon as I finish this review. I have the Kindle version & I've marked it up already (I usually do so after quite a few rereads). I plan on sharing this book with everyone I can. I haven't tried any of the links in the book yet but I will on the reread.
Seriously, read this book! No religion background required. It fits any person's life & belief system, while simultaneously able to raise your vibration/awareness/help you evolve & grow.
It's like magic & mundane, art & science, fucking & making love, appreciation & existence all in one concept. Like a singularity & the Big Bang all at once. Yeah, it's that shatteringly beautiful.
Spirituality for Badasses is a pleasant surprise on your journey toward mindfulness and better living. The style of the book is interesting and engaging. Written both to the reader and about the reader in a fashion that resembles a choose-your-own-adventure, the author takes you on a literal journey, during which he uses real world people, places and examples to illustrate the principles and practices you’ll need to get started toward your more spiritual, contemplative, deliberate new you. I was searching for books to help me do some deep thinking around the New Year, and [full disclosure] the Dalai Lama’s book had a two-week hold at the library. So I bought this to read while I waited. Could not have been happier. Even more delighted to see that a sequel is on the way! Happy reading friends.
I have been trying to find someway to find inner peace. Not only did I find the a way to achieve that and more! I have the kindle version as well as the audible. He is upfront with the fact that there is swearing and not for someone that is (in my words) uptight. I like how he walks us through the process in a way that is easily relatable. There is a way to tie the examples into every day life. After reading and listening, I have found myself being aware when I am stressed and what is causing it. Being aware of my breathing and letting myself feel, actually feel what is happening. This is a work in progress for me. I have a a long way to go but he gave me a way to start and a goal that is attainable.
Good information but torturous to read. I suppose the profanity and goofy stories were meant to be cute, or to dumb the content down for those of us who aren't philosophers or Buddhist monks. Too bad because the insights and exercises are very helpful.
I highlighted and saved notes on my Kindle and gladly finished this book. I don't mind profanity in moderation but as far as I'm concerned, foul language and spirituality do not belong on the same page.
You know this was a pretty cool, badass read. A little tongue in cheek, a little do not take me to seriously, but take me seriously! Know thyself, get out of your own way and you're going to be OK kind of book. Deal with your sh**, and then let that sh** go and move on kind of book. I felt this!
There isn't a whole lot of recycled pop psychology catch phrases and carefully controlled workbooks to "push" you in the desired direction. You choose to go on this ride - and if you truly choose it and keep an open mind, I had quite a bit of merit.
An interesting 'journey' awaits as you are transported through the various routes to enlightening yourself from within, trust, overcoming fear but pace yourself - stop, smell the newly mown grass that is being exposed to a new you. Funny, down to earth and easy to read.
I purchased the Kindle version simply for being intrigued by the title. But I quickly got sucked in. I am of the Christian faith and found so many correlations to Scripture. This book is a life changer.
The author took you on a journey ! His voice was easy to follow and the flow within his words came natural and smooth. The topic nothing earth shaking BUT well done and reflection to be like oh YEs! Thank you for the ride
This book came highly recommended from a dear friend. I listened via audible and could have done without the constant filthy language and virtual trips which took away from the points the author was trying to make. I did not finish this book.
Definitely not your run of the mill spiritual book. If you're offended by bad language then don't read this. It gives you a lot to prices and new ways to see things.
You know that annoying youth pastor in That 70’s Show who tries too hard to be cool and relatable? Pretty sure that’s who wrote this book. If you don’t believe me, just check out the author picture, the backwards hat… Nuff said.
I appreciate what this book tries to do and convey, but I don’t like how it went about it. I found the book scrambled and all over the place. It made it difficult to read at times. There were some messages I was able to take away, but not something I would read again.
