Speaking and listening; writing and reading; a baby's cry or a friend's hug. Communication is the way people share what they know and share how they feel.
Aliki has written and illustrated many books, both fiction and nonfiction, loved by readers throughout the world. The books were inspired by a word, an experience, or the desire to find out. Aliki lives in London, England.
This is a well-presented picture book about the importance of clear, effective communication and the different ways in which people can communicate with one another. It doesn't follow one cohesive narrative - it's more like a sequence of examples and scenarios. It could be a really useful tool for educating children and enabling them to explain their feelings. I loved that the BSL and Braille alphabets are printed at the front and back of the book for reference alongside the standard alphabet too!
I used this book with beginning ESOLstudents while teaching them about the concepts of language, communication, and understanding. Alike, the author covers in words and pictures how people and animals communicate with words, sounds, gestures and sung language, etc. it was very helpful and we worked on the book for a week while generating words and pictures of communication. Really enjoyable book and it communicates the idea of communication very well.
