Greta and the Ghost Hunters

Rate this book
The hilarious tale of a family coming to terms with its ghosts - literally.

Greta Woebegone did not believe in ghosts because she was a sensible young girl and sensible young girls tend not to believe in ghosts. That was until the day she was knocked over by a car and died, when everything changed...

As she recovers, Greta finds she can not only see the spirits that haunt her ancestral home, she can talk to them - from her Grandpa Woebegone and Percy the poo-pushing plague victim, to the sinister poltergeist in the cellar.

Can Greta save the ghosts from being exorcised (a fate worse than undeath)? Can the ghosts help Greta stop her beloved Grandma being put in a home? And can any of them find the courage to face up to the traumas in their pasts that are holding them back from the future?

THANKS TO NETGALLEY AND THE PUBLISHER FOR THIS REVIEW COPY IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW.

Greta lives with her grandma, parents, younger brother, and a few ghosts. Her Mother is yoga obsessed and her father tries his hand on poetry. Younger brother is too young to talk and anyways he is always busy playing with lorries. Naturally, Grandma is Greta's best friend. But she talks to the ghost of grandpa and Greta's parents want her to send her to an old home. Greta also used to think that grandma is losing marbles until one day Greta was hit by a vehicle and after that accident now she can also see the ghosts. Her parents are more than sure that Grandma is a bad influence on their daughter.

I love the writing style and narration. The illustration was so cute. The character building, humor, pace, and flow of the plot were perfect. I like the way all characters were so different and showed character growth throughout the story. Greta and her dynamics with all the ghosts were so good and made me laugh many times. If you want to read a feel-good book this one is for you.

A spooky and laugh-out-loud book about friendship, family, and more!

I was so absolutely hyped that Sam Copeland (and Sarah Horne) were collaborating on a new story again! This time ghosts and crazy plans! This review may be a bit chaotic, because BOY I got so many feels!

Poor Greta, when we first see her she has a deadly accident and that is a red thread through the book. At times I just wanted to step in the book to give Greta a big hug. Tell her that it would be OK. That the outside may be scary, but that it can also be a fun place. I loved how hard she was fighting to keep her grandma in her home, and how she kept trying to get some sense in her parents.

I loved grandma, though I was a bit sad by one revelation early in the book! I had so hoped for something else! I did love the bond between grandmother and grandchild. Love that they had each other and so I was rooting hard for Greta to be able to hold her grandma close to her. Because putting her in a home will mean that Greta will barely see her grandma. That she will be all alone again.

The people hired for getting rid of the ghosts? I was both laughing (especially at that second couple) as worried. Would these incapable people be able to get rid of the ghosts? Turn the story to another way? Or would Greta and the ghosts be able to turn things round and save the day.

I loved the three ghosts. Yes, they were a tad annoying, at least in the beginning, but then later I really started to like them, so so much. Grandpa was at first so rude, but then as we learn more about him, and how he does things, you just know that despite the grump he is actually very sweet and cares a lot about his family. About his wife, about his grandchildren. He really tried his best as the story went on. And Percy, who is a bit too much about witches, is actually just a boy who wants someone to love and remember him. He needs a friend. A family. You do have to poke through some things because haha, throughout the story he sticks a bit too much in his olden ways. XD And then there is Wolfgang, I loved that he was the narrator and that he also took the role of MC. I had to get used to him because he was in ways even grumpier than grandpa, but he also had, as Greta aptly tells him in the story, a heart. Even if he hides it in darkness and sadness. I had such a laugh btw to the name of his town.

I am still not sure how I feel about the parents. On the one hand I could see that they cared about their kids and their family, but on the other hand they were just so evil and vile. The way they treated Greta, the way they didn’t care about grandma and how they were just really want to get rid of her (for a yoga studio room, wtf), the way they didn’t listened to their kids. Holy wow.

The ending was fantastic, very sad though because of all the things that happen there. There are also happy moments and moments that made me go HAHA! I really like how the author wrote this all and how it all came together. So proud of Greta as well!

The art was just FAB! I loved the way the ghosts were drawn~

All in all, highly recommended! This was just tons of fun.

This story is short and packed with many hijinks(a word that best fits the situations described here.
Our lead protagonist is the odd daughter who does not take after her pretentious parents. Her brother, at the time of the narrative, is too young to fall under any category. Her grandmother is bedridden in the attic and talks to and about Greta's dead grandfather. Her grandmother is to be relocated to an old age home, something that Greta firmly opposes.
After a near-death experience, she can see and communicate with the ghosts in the house. When she decides to use them to convince her parents to leave things the way they are, things backfire. Exorcists/ghost hunters start to make their appearance. There are some deeper issues tackled, one of them being the reluctance of our leading lady to step outside after her accident.
There are pieces of this that were more entertaining than others. It was funny in stages, although I am not sure which ages would appreciate this conversation between loss and grief hidden behind some fart jokes more and which ages would just chuckle at the latter part while ignoring the rest. I felt like I would have liked it more if it had been shorter. I read a sporadic amount of children's books and, like quite a few, enough to recommend to my nieces and nephews. I am not sure I would be especially recommending this, even if I do think it has its audience.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.

I have mixed feelings about this book. It was a decent read, but despite my love for children's books, it was a tad childish for my liking. However, I feel like actual children would really enjoy this book! It's got a good level of silliness that i think kids would really enjoy.
I liked that Greta was so close with her grandma, and was doing everything she could to keep her at home with her, rather than being sent to a home. The ghosts were good fun, each in their own way. The parents were utterly unlikeable (which obviously was on purpose, as they are basically the villains of the book), not the worst parents ever, but annoying, don't listen to or believe their child, and are so selfabsorbed they just don't know what is actually happening half the time.
so overall, I personally wouldn't read again, but I really think kids will adore this book!

Sam Copeland strikes again with Greta and the Ghost Hunters, an irreverent tale about a girl who almost dies in an accident and can now see ghosts.

This book is narrated by a cynical, mildly depressed German pianist-ghost, who has no patience for young children (he keeps forgetting Greta’s baby brother’s name so he calls him “What” for “What’s his name?” 🤣).

“Now, in case there are any children reading this book — and there really shouldn’t be, because children should not be reading stories about ghosts, but if there are — I should explain what poltergeists are…”

Yup, he’s one of those, and it’s really funny how he is chronically unable to scare Greta and the balance of power is all wrong.

Greta’s exaggeratedly useless parents want to move Grandma to a home, because she keeps talking to Grandpa who’s long dead. Oh, wouldn’t her room make a lovely yoga studio for Mum, too? 😵‍💫💨

Greta is very focused, on getting her ghostly/ghastly friends to scare her parents and prove that Grandma was in fact talking to Grandpa the ghost. Whether this is in fact true is another story 🤣 but the shenanigans are aplenty!

When the ghostbusters come, there is an extremely dim assistant who’s my favourite 🤣 And jokes abound about a “Medium” (“you look like an extra small to me”) and about moving spirits to another erm, “plane”.✈️

“His soft blue eyes, sitting under a mop of blond hair, had all the understanding of a turkey waiting for the Boxing Day sales.”

Lotsa fun, from the bestselling duo behind the Charlie Changes into a Chicken series.

Man, I loved this. It’s full of ghostly shenanigans, a girl afraid and a fair few new friends! Greta is a lush character and her ghost friends really made me chuckle. The narration in this is just gorgeous. This made me laugh a lot and cry, of course! Sam Copeland just gets funny books and this is gonna be a proper hit with kids!

3.75/4….I enjoyed the majority of this book, I loved the messages within this, and I was nearly crying at the end. Great characters, not scary, but really fun ghosts. Great for kids.

This is such a great ghost story for younger readers and I really loved the cast of characters. As someone who is not particularly fond of toilet humour some parts of this really didn’t appeal much to me but I can see young readers roaring with laughter! I hated the parents and their disinterest in anything but their own pursuits, adored the batty grandma in the attic and found the two ghostbuster charlatan characters a riot!

Thank you to NetGalley for a advanced e-copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Greta and The Ghost Hunters was on my anticipated releases for 2022 list and whilst it was an enjoyable read it didn’t quite pack the punch I thought it was going to.

I did appreciate the exploration of fear especially fear after a trauma and thought it was realistically portrayed and handled in a sensitive way.

The toilet based humour was not to my personal taste and I did find some of the characters a bit one-dimensional. This could have been purposeful though due to who was narrating but it often felt too superficial.

Overall I do think this would appeal to the target audience and provides both humour and a meaningful exploration of emotions in equal measure.

This book was really sweet and the ending made my heart feel warm. It's a really funny book with some lovable characters. There's character development for many and you leave the book with a smile on your face. I would recommend to anyone who was thinking about giving it a try.

I might be a lot older than 9 but since I read Charlie Changes Into a Chicken, Sam Copeland's books have been my favourite to read (I even got my friend and her gran reading them!) This book does not disappoint and I think it's my favourite book since the authors first book.

Greta and the Ghost Hunters follows a girl who in her desperation to stop her gran going to a care home comes up with a plan with her new ghost friends to prove her gran is not going mad by proving the house is haunted but she ends up in more ghostly trouble than she anticipated.

Whilst this story didn't have as serious a topic as previous books I love how the book was full of family love and heart from Greta. It is lovely to see how much she cared for her grandma as well as the members of the family in spirit form she can now see and how whilst she seemed to overdo her plan at times you could tell it was coming from her heart and her love of keeping her family together. The end was particularly heartwarming yet sad as it showed how far the characters had come in the story and it was great to see how everyone was considering each other's feelings and what was best for them.

The illustrations are fantastic, as always, and work so well with the authors writing. Together they really bring the story to life and show off just how funny and humorous the story is whilst also bringing across the importance of the emotions which show not everything in life is all fun and games and sometimes it's sad for everyone too.

This is a fantastic book that is hilarious, full of sarcasm and lots of toilet humour which children will love whilst also having a more emotional and touching side to the story. I do have two complaints though, I didn't want the book to end and bring back the footnotes (can it be a Sam Copeland book without them!!)

A wonderful book full of humour and spookiness! Greta lives with her mum, dad, brother and gran. Her gran is convinced she can see ghosts and everyone in the family humours her but doesnt really believe her. Until one day, Greta has a near death experience caused by kidney beans and sellotape -when she wakes up she can see ghosts, including her grand-dad, and a small boy called Percy.
Her mum and dad dont think her gran is able to live independently anymore and are trying to move her into a care home, using her 'lies' about seeing ghosts as proof that she isnt as sharp as she once was.
Greta decides to use the ghosts in the house to try and prove to the rest of the family that they do exist and that her gran isn't losing it after all
Some fabulous slapstick scenes and plenty of fart jokes! i would recommend it for 8+

Greta discovers her house is full of family ghosts after she dies and is resuscitated. Her parents want to get rid of the ghosts so Greta has to act quickly to save them...
Greta and the Ghost Hunters is a wonderful children’s book about a girl who discovers she can see and hear ghosts.
Greta's grandmother has long claimed to see her grandfather's ghost and refuses to leave him to move to an old people's home. It turns out she can't see him but Greta can and more besides!
Greta makes plans with the ghosts to prevent her parents successfully hiring ghost hunters. I loved the sinister narrator who is revealed to be a ghost too. The book features toilet humour, and funny names while the plot and characters develop enjoyably.
Greta and the Ghost Hunters is fun for parents and children, and I thought that the audio narration was perfectly matched to the book.

I'm aware I am not the target audience for this book so do take this with a grain of salt.

I saw a few people calling this laugh out loud funny and while it did make me smile and even chuckle sometimes it's nowhere near that level of hilarious.

Because it's such a short book there was no way to give any depth to any of the characters except for Greta, and even then it didn't feel like we knew her at all. The ghosts were somewhat interesting though again not particularly fleshed out, her grandma felt more like a prop, and her parents were complete caricatures.

The one redeeming quality besides it being funny here and there was the ending, and even then only because I'm a very emotional person, and loss and saying goodbye just hit me very hard.

Overall I think it would probably be an enjoyable read for kids ages 8 to 12, but older than that I fear kids would roll their eyes at it.

With the help of probably the two most useless ghosts ever, Greta decides to convince her parents that the house is haunted so they will believe her grandmother sees ghosts rather than that she has gone senile and needs to be in a home.
I loved the narrator immediately and most of the other characters too. Apart from for Greta's ghastly parents, the characters are all hilarious. This is an excellent book for reading aloud, I almost missed some of the jokes as I read it so fast. A very fun and at times moving story with lots of laughs.

This is really three and a half stars!

I picked this up randomly looking for books in a charity shop to read and yes this may be aimed more at younger readers I was drawn in by the topic.

The characters in this book are enjoyable and fun to read about as are the three ghosts who reside in the house. This book is a fun easy and quick read if you just want something light-hearted and enjoyable that occasionally pulls your heart strings.

I would say this is a random book that I am happy that I picked up because I don't know if I'd ever have found it randomly in my book shop adventures.

Consigliatissimo!

I really enjoyed reading this book because Greta Woebegone did not believe in ghosts because I don't too. But I didn't really like when they said that Greta died because she got knocked over by a car, but she came back to live. And l also like that Greta is indestructible because that means that she is different than others. Greta is my favorite because she is the only young and different girl in the family. And I really like her looks like her braids and her brown hair. I would recomined this book to people that like ghost stuff.

A fun story for younger middle grade readers, Greta is full of the toilet humour that this age group of children often love but also has themes of anxiety, loss and family. I very much enjoyed the names of characters and places - e.g. Wolfgang Von Bach-Storey! - and the portrayal of the close bong between Greta and her grandma was warm and touching.

This tried too hard to be funny. Bathroom humour is not my thing and this read very young because of it. I thought that it was way too long; it might have been better as a first chapter book. The first page hooked me but the story took a different direction from what I thought was going to happen. I also found the narration a bit confusing 🫤. Next.
