I honestly didn't know what I was getting into with Unnatural but I've seen the cover around and was kind of curious. I just never wanted to use one of my loans on it. However, since it was offered up as a free Hoopla bonus borrw this month, I pulled the trigger.

description

Admittedly, I didn't really read the blurb.
Apparently, it's a romancy-erotica comic that mirrors racial and/or LGBTQ issues. The animal people who live in this world are required by law to mate with the opposite sex & same species. The little pig-girl has these recurring dreams about having a wolf as a lover, which is a big no-no that in her real life could land her in jail. Or executed.
Also if you haven't found someone by 25, the government will help youfind someone appropriate to marry.

description

Plus, there's a deadly conspiracy mixed up with some sort of mystic reincarnation thing happening. <--I don't know all the details, stop pressuring me!

description

Ok. It was kind of weird but not awful. And pig erotica* is not my jam. But considering this story wraps up in 3 volumes, I'm tempted to see how it all turns out.

*is it erotica? I keep seeing it called that, but there wasn't a lot of sex. It was just drawn "sexy" - if you can even call animal-people sexy? I know nothing about any of this and I'm scared to go down the rabbit hole if I Google it.

Wow, this graphic novel is so gorgeous! I love this pastel goth vibe and Leslie's such a sweet, likable protagonist. I was a little confused early on as to who I was supposed to be rooting for as far as the other characters go, and there were some little twists I definitely didn't see coming. The plot is a little bit terrifying, as it kind of reminds you of some sort of twisted dystopia, only with anthro animals instead of regular humans. I was really just fascinated by the character designs and the storyline as a whole, and I definitely am interested in seeing what happens next!

This is an adult version of Zootopia with Orwellian overtones. Leslie is a pig girl having erotic dreams with a wolf she's never met. She's turning 25 at which point the authoritarian government forces you to marry or pay heavy fines. Interspecies and same-sex marriage are outlawed. There's this whole conspiracy / past lives thing introduced in latter issues that felt out of place, like Andolfo couldn't decide what she wanted the book to be about. This book was translated from Italian so the dialogue can be clunky at times as well.

Mirka Andolfo's art is gorgeous. She does it all soup to nuts, including making anthropomorphic characters look human and real.

Unnatural echoes sentiments of Black Mirror with elements of real-world totalitarian plausibility exemplified through birth and mating control, as well as overtaxing those few who dare to be different, stretching the populace into poverty.

While this all consuming and thought provoking story draws comparison to current day events and spotlights the strength of diversity, it's a fun and wholly entertaining light erotica with fantastical elements which steadily build each chapter into an epic crescendo of violence and the other-worldly.

The protagonist, Leslie Blair, is a pig girl, who dreams of a wolf-man lover; something forbidden in this animalistic world where its citizens are made to procreate with 'their kind', if not on their own accord, then at the hands of a Government controlled match-making service called Real Love, a subsidiary of the Reproduction Program Office.

Unsure as to why she's constantly at the mercy of these 'unnatural' dreams, Leslie confines in her roommate, Trish for support, seeking method to the madness.

What follows neither of the young women sees coming - and certainty not this reader.

My rating: 5/5 stars. Unnatural is a great read complimented by some stunning art. Over the course of the 4-issue volume, the graphic novel establishes a new world, concept, characters, and a heartbreaking backstory while setting up the next installment. I can't wait to read volume 2.

Wow!

Unnatural V1

Warning: This review contains a lot of sexual discussion due to the nature of this comic (which is very NSFW). If sexual content makes you uncomfortable, you probably shouldn’t read this book or my review for it.

What’s it about?
Leslie is a pig-girl who keeps having erotic dreams about a wolf. The thing is that isn’t good as sexual relationships with animals of a different species are illegal in this book’s world of anthropomorphic creatures, so is homosexuality. So now with her friend Trish teasing her about these dreams, her gator-man boss being a douchebag and her gay friend who’s in a relationship with a guy who’s a different species, she has a lot of crazy shit going on. It gets even crazier on her 25th birthday when a government run dating app asks her to date and reproduce with a guy chosen for her or pay very high taxes.

Pros:
The story is interesting. Putting serious issues of social commentary and sex in this cartoony world is kinda interesting. I think it’s because of the duality of child-like and adult, sorta similar to what makes Skottie Young’s gore-filled and snarky, colorful cartoon comic I Hate Fairyland appealing to so many (though I personally prefer IHF).
The art is very well done and eye-catching. It also suits the book’s bleak but also cartoony tone.
description
While mostly serious there are a few good comic relief moments.
The social commentary is very interesting. The story approaches subjects like homophobia, racism (I think the government thinking different species in a sexual relationship being wrong is meant to be similar to racists who think interracial relationships are wrong), how society expects people to marry and have kids (something that males sadly deal with as well as women, I know as a guy who dislikes the idea of kids) and even police brutality. However, all this is well written and not forced as it’s part of the plot so it’s actually good and interesting.
Les and Trish have a cute pet dragon that sorta acts like a small dog.

Cons:
The characters are not very interesting. Leslie- didn’t really care, just sorta went “eh, good luck Miss Piggy”. Derek- nope, still don’t care, this dude’s actually a kind of bland plot device. Trish- Okay so she is surprisingly hot but other than that...
description
(I mean I’m no furry but damn, that is quite the cute mouse!)
This comic is kinda lacking in action. Maybe I wasn’t meant to expect something particularly exciting but I did but well... let’s just say there’s only one sort of “action” that we frequently see in this book (and despite all the sexual content, not even one NSFW panel of the character I think is hot, go figure) so yeah.
The plot is pretty predictable. Like yeah, there’s a twist here and there but for the most part very typical.
I actually wasn’t really into the romance and sex despite those 2 things being such a big part of the book.

Interesting story or furry hentai?
There are some who seem to consider this an interesting story for mature readers... but others seem to consider this furry porn (as in when I was looking for images for this review I surprisingly decided not to use some due to the source being “read porn comics”/“hentai online” sorts of websites, sorta unusual for a mainstream comic from a publisher like Image). I wouldn’t consider this porn. Make no mistake, the themes of the story are very sexual and there are quite a few scenes that include graphic sexual content but in a context that makes sense, is necessary to the story and isn’t just mindless excuses for sex and nudity. So while it isn’t for readers who worry about graphic sexual content and frequent nudity I would say it’s far from being porn: hell if you’re fine with some other NSFW Image comics like Saga (which I honestly thought tries too hard to be edgy sex comic, at least in volume one), Kill or Be Killed and Sex Criminals, this is no worse (in fact, maybe milder). Anyway, I would tell people it’s a story for mature readers, not a weird sex comic.

Overall:
This book is weird. Yeah the story has potential and I certainly like the well written political element of the book, not to mention beautiful art and adorable dragon-dog! However the lack of interesting characters, the uninteresting romantic element and predictability are there so I can’t say I’m particularly into it.
That being said it has potential so I’ll eventually read volume 2 (and probably add the Artgerm variant of issue 2 to my collection because as most Artgerm variants, it’s cool and in this case very cute and colorful) but it’s not a high priority on the ol’ reading list.

Will you hold the line?
When every one of them is giving up or giving in, tell me
In these dreams inside
Nothing ever comes without a consequence or cost, tell me
Giving in this time?
Will someone step in? Will they save you from this? Will they?
'Cause these dreams of yours aren’t wrong

That's the price you pay
Dreaming of your desire today
Thinking of the wolf all night and day
Cause he is not the same species, okay?
And they’re saying it is evil, fucked up, and all

Unnatural
Your beating heart it moans
Why are their laws so cold
They tell you in this world
That it’s unnatural
This place don’t have much hope
Their laws are oh so cold
Saying “unnatural”

Will somebody
Let me see the love against the dark society and
What's happenin'?
Lookin' through the app find the love within their plan knowin'
It ain’t the truth
Fuck the policies, inside the world saying we must be mating
It ain’t for you, for you

That's the price you pay
Dreaming of your desire today
Thinking of the wolf all night and day
Cause he is not the same species, okay?
And they’re saying it is evil, fucked up, and all

Unnatural
Your beating heart it moans
Why are their laws so cold
They tell you in this world
That it’s unnatural
This place don’t have much hope
Their laws are oh so cold
Saying “unnatural”

Deep inside ye, it’s all coming back, it’s crazy
Had a dream of the tale of your wolf, you can’t take it
I can taste it, the end is upon us, I swear
They’re all full of shit
You’ll show it all is

Natural
Your beating heart it moans
Why are their laws so cold
They tell you in this world
That it’s unnatural
This place don’t have much hope
Their laws are oh so cold
Saying “unnatural”

My review was first posted on Northern Plunder, you can read more of my reviews there too.

Why did I pick up Unnatural? CUTE GOTH PIG GIRL.

I didn’t even read the synopsis but I ended up being surprised by the route this graphic novel took and I really enjoyed it.

Surprised because the opening pages were uh, a nsfw sex scene! Which actually turned out to be Leslie – main characters – reocurring fantasy dream.

Wait, please don’t cut away because you’re like Lauren please? Stop with the NSFW graphic novels, I just need to acknowledge this fantasy she has as it plays into the main story later on. Just give me a chance.

So the start threw me off a bit but then as Leslie is walking to work I notice a few things in the background that caught my eye and made me question what was the setting like of her world, and a news show which give these “adverts” more context.

In short, the government don’t want same-sex or different-specied beings to be in relationships or recreate. Its very heavily policed; as well as there being propgoanda about it on the streets, theres children shows to “educate” them, and court cases are broadcast to remind people who they’ll be put into programmes to fix them or killed if its the second infraction.

Which means Leslie’s dreams are against the law.

Additionally married partners will get a much lower tax to further help encourage the society to stick to these rules.

But wait? Theres more.

When anyone hits 25 they’re automatically entered into a dating programme if they’ve yet to find a same species partner to encourage them to find the “perfect person” but with Leslies’ past dating attempts ending badly and leaving her unwanting to be forced into a relationship she does have doubts.

Oh and her dreams are getting more intense; more like memories than anything make believe.

So whilst she heads out onto her arranged date, her flatmate (Trish) decideds to do some reasearch into what he dreams could possibly be.

Trish is another character who’s design I really liked, and we get to see how the two become friends in a flashback so I have a lot of respect for her. She’s very caring, smart, and her humour is very uplifting in this oppressed world.

Leslie got a little overwhelmed at her date though. Initially because he was HOT. (Her facial expression killed me)

Then later because she didn’t pick up on a few things the reader did.

I was particularly fond of the fact that even when drunk she took a step back and realised she needed to think about this situation properly, does it go against her own morals, is this too good to be true?

Is this too good to be true?

And then BAAM the main plot starts.

AND THIS IS WHY I NEED TO RECOMMEND IT, WHY I NEED TO KEEP READING IT.

A secret society needs Leslie so they can perform a ritual and they’ve infiltrated her life in ways she couldn’t consider. Her dreams are memories and theres a mysterious stranger who looks suspiciously familiar trying to keep her safe.

Damn.

The plot goes hard and her life really is in danger.

At this point I really don’t know what more I can say as it does become very plot driven for the last part of the graphic novel and I think its important to not spoil it too much, so I’m going to end on a very sweet scene and some images where we can admire Leslie’s design and aesthetics!

This gorgeous book with interesting world building and a decent story. This was a nice surprise!

It's basically about our main character, Leslie, trying to find love. Well, more in the mood for a werewolf to fuck her hard. Yes. That is the main plot point at the start. See in this world everyone is an animal. Leslie is a pig girl and she is a horny one. Every night she has dreams of a werewolf fucking her brains out. Every day she wakes up disappointed. However, In this world animals are not allowed to get with other animals. The must stick with their own. So it starts as a love story almost but by the end killings start happening and the story takes a dark turn.

Enjoyable dialogue with fun characters, great art, and some good turns. Felt a tad bit rushed at points and sometimes a little sex fan service but for most part I was enjoying alot of it. A 4 out of 5.

Update: finished all 3 volumes. It stays pretty good but remains totally un-subtle. It wasn't until volume 3 that I noticed the intentional references to both Animal Farm and 1984. (The pigs, lead by Napoleon, think they are "more equal" than other animals. The sympathetic rule-breaker is named Winston.)

---

Read with a book club. In the story, the "people" are all partly animals, like pigs, mice, wolves, etc. The government penalizes any sexual relationships between different species, or between same-sex couples. The allegory seems too on-the-nose for me. Too obvious a parallel to discrimination based on race and sexual orientation. But, after a while, an additional level of the story opens up with some mysterious feuding groups and mythic creatures. So, I'll keep reading.

Plenty of "sexy" pictures, which might be disturbing if and when you realize you are finding a pig's breasts or a wolf's butt sexy. Also expect bloody violence.

I'm not a huge comic book reader, but my brother-in-law (super talented artist and comic book nerd) and I have this thing where we gift each other complete comic books, graphic novels and manga series for our birthdays and Christmas.
It's a cute habit that randomly started years ago and left me with a discrete pile of graphic novel series that I still need to read and that I've finally decided to blindly dive into.
I'm gonna start with this, because, I'm in love with the concept and art.

Like I said, I'm no expert, so I'm just gonna review the entire trilogy together by commenting on how I liked it as a comic book sporadic reader and how it made me feel in the end.

ok look hear me out

the set-up isn't exactly original -- the message is good, but it's one we've all heard before, and it's wrapped up in Black Mirror vibes, but with...you know, furries

but hey, the closer towards the end of the first volume i got, the crazier the story got, plus, the artwork's 11/10

also i'm a sucker for all the horny pig-girl covers they've been doing for the individual issues, so what wanna fight about it

In perusing what they had to offer, I stumbled on Unnatural Volume 1: Awakening, which was featured on the app. I absolutely borrowed it based on the cover alone — checking that category off of my WWAC Reading Challenge — because Mirka Andolfo’s art is a gorgeous, seductive array of colour and imagery.

The book is about Leslie J. Blair, a hardworking pig girl who just wants to find love before she’s forced into a government-sanctioned same-species relationship when she comes of age. But steamy dreams involving a sexy wolf keep edging her toward breaking the law. This initially seemed like it could easily be described as erotic Zootopia, but there’s something far deeper and more insidious going on with those dreams…

How has it taken me over a month to review this title?!
Seriously, I loved it. I read both volumes in one sitting and have checked maybe 2 or 3 times on when the third one will potentially be released in English. I. Need. More.
I went into this one thinking it would be insta-love between an aggressive werewolf and a more submissive pig -- I WAS WRONG.

Wow, this isn't just a romance, in fact there is barely any romance or sexy times outside her dreams. Although, that being said, the sex dreams can be pretty explicit - so heads up!
This series is about a super controlling government that is involved with their public's love lives. No gay marriages, no inter-species *cough* interracial *cough* relationships and lots we must keep our species going rhetoric. This wasn't the story I signed up for, but I'm 100% here for it.

It is deadly (seriously, my heart broke over one death), there is rebellion, and a mythical past. I'm in LOVE with this series even though there were some confusing moments.

The art work in this is seriously gorgeous. I love Leslie and how beautifully thick she is! While this is erotic, it really isn't outside of some female nudity, you see more graphic sex in things like Saga, honestly, so if you can handle that, you can handle this. And while I loved the premise and how closely it aligns with current issues our world faces on love being love no matter who it's between, I did find the story lacking at times. Things tended to jump and move too quickly so when certain characters came and went, I wasn't left feeling much of anything for their loss, or was confused as to what actually just happened. This is also the case for the prophecy that Leslie finds herself wrapped up in.

Ultimately, while the art work is amazing and the concept is so, so good, it needed more of the story to truly bring it together. But if you are asking "are you going to read the next one?" the answer is: Absolutely yes! I am intrigued and love looking at Leslie far too much to give my pig girl up yet!
