Little Bird is Afraid of Height: Teaching Children to Overcome Fears
The little bird loves the sky. He tries to fly but can never fly up more than a few feet. He is too afraid. So he watches the other birds fly into the sky and leave him.
Ingo Blum is a German author and comedian. His journey to becoming a children’s book author began during his day job. He has always enjoyed projects where he could create artwork for kids. Eventually, he became a writer and graphic designer in the evenings - and started writing children's stories to accompany these projects for fun. With some encouragement from his friends and family (and a lot of kids!), he decided to share his stories with the world. Ingo works with illustrators from all over the world with whom he constantly develops new concepts and stories.
Read for my toddler's bedtime. The little bird is afraid of heights so he didn't fly too high. He decided to make friends who live on the ground because all of his bird friends fly high. But other animals do different things like swim or living underground and he can't do any of those. One little bird was stuck but since he's little he couldn't help. He ran for help.. as he ran he fly because fly is faster and as he fly he flew higher and he became enchanted by the view from above that he forgets his scare of heights..
Little Bird is Afraid of Height is a picture book by Ingo Blum, and illustrated by Liubov Gorbova. It features the story of a bird who has a fear of heights, and is mocked by the other birds. So it tries to find new friends on the ground. On Amazon, the current subheading for the book is “Teach Your Children To Overcome Their Fears”.
So, referencing that subheading, I don’t feel that it actually accomplishes that goal. A lot of the book isn’t actually about overcoming fear; the majority of the book is about the searching for friends on the ground. While I appreciate the idea that the bird tries to find new friends, it has nothing to do with overcoming fear. And yes, the bird does end up flying later on, but the author has it so that the bird simply “forgets his fear”, which is likely to be completely useless for a lot of children. There is no actual problem solving to help resolve this fear, nor anything useful to relieve anxiety for children. I’ll use the example of flight. Imagine that you and your kid are going on a trip, but the child has a fear of flying. The bird in the book simply forgets the fear once they’ve begun flying. However, a lot of kids being on airplanes might not forget their own fear so easily. Especially if they’re afraid of things like crashes, or being up so high in the air, etc. These are very valid fears and anxieties that a lot of children have, and even adults experience these concerns. Many such people have flown many times (such as adults flying for reasons, as an example); so the idea that such people will simply forget their fear once they start flying is just ludicrous for a lot of people. This entire overcoming fear story was poorly thought out, on the part of the author. It’s like the way people will have fears, and be told things like “you’ll get over it once you do it”, even though they’re very valid fears to have.
And, as mentioned earlier, the bird was bullied by its friends in the beginning of the book. That’s a key problem for the bird that was not solved. It leaves the book on a very sad note for me. The other birds bullied it so much that it needed to find a new friend, but the bird didn’t find new friends because there were such huge differences between the creatures. So, while yes it can now fly without fear, it still doesn’t have any friends that treat it with respect.
On a positive note, the illustrations are nice, and there’s a good amount of animals that I’m sure kids will love to see. The scenery is definitely really nice, and the artist did really good work with the bushes and trees. I like a lot of the textural aspects of things like the animal furs and feathers.
Overall, I think the book was really sad, and the “overcoming fear” portion of the book just did not make sense. It feels very incomplete in terms of the story writing. I bought this book during a promotional period where the price was set to free. So I didn’t lose any money on this book. But, if I had actually paid for it, I would be super annoyed. I appreciate that the author made an attempt to write a story about overcoming fears. But it needed to be much better thought out. It needed actual problem solving on how to reduce anxiety and stress for those fears; rather than just tricking people into thinking it will go away once you try the thing you’re afraid of.
Little Bird lacks self-confidence. He is afraid to fly. The other birds shun him because he refuses to join them in the skies. Little Bird turns to other animals and requests their friendship, but they see nothing in common with Little Bird. When a crisis arises, Little Bird discovers his talents.
This rhyming picture book is a perfect choice for preschoolers to teach the concepts of teamwork, cooperation, friendship, and empathy. The illlustrations are appealing, but I would have preferred the text to be larger to make it easier for children beginning to read. Suggested as a bedtime story or classroom read aloud.
There is a bird that lived his life in a tree on the lowest branch. Always dreamed of leaving, but never took the chance. See unlike all the other birds that left and took flight, This bird was different because it was afraid of heights. How is that possible how could it be Birds are supposed to naturally fly high and free? But this bird was afraid to fly off on his own, so he just stayed in the tree and never left home.
He always watched others come and leave, But no matter how hard he tried to believe, He never was never going to be anything more than a bird stuck in a tree
An adorable little story about a bird who is afraid to fly. He sets out to find a friend who doesn't fly like himself but finds he doesn't really fit in with any of the other animals he stumbles upon. Finally he finds a kiwi bird who cannot fly but also cannot get out of a hole. As the little bird tries to help his new possible friend, he gets over his fear and learns to fly! The illustrations in this book are really cute and I loved the message of this story.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Ingo Blume is a fabulous author of books that are soon to be the favorites of your child's. The illustrations are entertaining. I highly recommend this book one in the new series called, "Little Bird." Little bird is afraid of heights. He goes up a little ways and then goes back down because he is afraid. The other birds make fun of him. He goes in search of a friend. I will let you discover who he finds.
I enjoyed this child book. This book was good also the illustrations. The message was well done. That trying again and again you might get it right. Also by trying something you don't like to do you might be good at. My children lile me reading this to them they like the little bird.
I was given a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
Read this delightful, colourful story to my five year old granddaughter, and she loved it. She gave it a thumbs up and a 5-star - one can't argue with kids. They know their stuff and what they like.
Thanks for the author, Ingo Blum, for a beautiful little story which teaches the importance of working towards overcoming fear in our lives.
This sweet story is about a shy little bird who is afraid to fly with the others and goes in search of a friend. But the other animals aren't quite right to be the little bird's friends.
This would be perfect for an animal lover as we get to might a lot of them in this tale. The illustrations are really cute too.
I read a biligual story. The story is cute bilingual story for children A little bird has no friends because it is afraid of heights and cannot fly. But once when a kiwi gets stuck in a whole, what does the little bird do? Beautiful illustrations and a bilingual story to give a beautiful message to children. Enjoyable read.
Nearly impossible to read on kindle, the print is too tiny.
The illustrations are beautiful, however the narration is stilted and simplistic, and often reads like a collection of phrases rather than a cohesive story

Little Bird is Afraid of Height: Teach Your Children To Overcome Their Fears (Bedtime Stories Book 1) by Ingo Blum – This is on kindle unlimited. My bibliotherapy book of the week. A sweet reminder that kind hearts give courage fuel. Happy Reading!
A sweet story of a little bird who got scared every time he tried to fly. A lesson that shows children that sometimes we think too much about the task at hand and it makes it hard to learn.
Choppy storyline no rhythm. No real moral. Tbh it doesn't make much sense actually. Seems as tho a bunch of themes from classic stories thrown together to make something that resembles a storyline but falls short.
The main character is cute and relatable. I enjoyed the fast pace and the social-emotional learning components. Children with fears will enjoy the bird's agency.
