They say a book comes into your life at just right moment.

Thankyou Charlene, while I know you wrote the book for TCK’s, as a British born Vietnamese who’s never felt a sense of belonging, worthlessness and marginalised, thankyou.

You have given me the courage to keep going, to become who I am.

I'm not the target audience, yet I found myself inside the stories. As someone barely having experience in studying and working abroad, I didn't expect I could have any emotional resonance with this book. Yet it's a story about all of us, in America or not. It's a story dedicated to those who are struggling to be their true selves.

I have had an American dream. But different from all the stories in this book, I didn't believe I could work that hard to get the huge financial investment paid back. I have almost died inside myself before I had courage to pursue that dream when I was younger. We have long been seeing America through the rose-colored glasses, but now I'll see it as a vehicle. You don't have to go to the America to find the opportunities. It's the decision to not quit and stay in your life arena that makes you strong and resilient. You are already "successful" measured by whether you consistently show up in your life. If you like me still having the American dream, just remember what the book gently reminds you, it doesn't have to be an American dream. It's about your dream.

"Once we cultivate a sense of self awareness, we can ground ourselves in the value that feel true. This self awareness would build our trust and back us up when the world is not ready for us."

I am very grateful that Charlene wrote this poignant, intimate, yet empowering book so timely. It took me a while to recognize how powerful it is, probably because I have hidden these emotions so deep that I'm afraid to feel. It's tempting to think that this is a story specifically for the high achievers, since all stories in this book are in some way a success story, as if if it's not successful in the end, it's not worthy to be told and paid attention to. But it's not. More people are suffering without looking good on paper, when they can't conform to the belief of "success as retribution of racism". I myself also have been reluctant to be a model daughter and student when I felt I was fed up with all these. We don't have to be categorized simply by a good or bad label. We don't have to satisfy the model myth before we become fully ourselves.

Just as Charlene said in this book, "Some of us are high achievers while others are slackers. Some are lazy. Some are artistic. Some like math while others like literature. Some are outspoken while others are quiet. To paint us all with a single brush, no matter how positive that brush might be, is to deny us who we really are. We are not the model minority. We are who we are."

A must-read if you want to get woke on the Asian model minority stereotype and find the power within. This book going to empower you to take action in the face of the inequalities that exist in the current system. Made for Chinese in the West, but compelling reading nonetheless.
