Ash Planet Warriors #1

Stolen by the Warlord

Rate this book
I stole her soul… now I will fill her womb.

The leaders of Solgad call me a rebel. They banished my tribe to the drought-cracked plains, denying me what is mine by right—the title of warlord and a place among those who wield power.

But not much longer.

To save those under my protection, I steal an Earth woman away from her betrothed. With a sting of my tailclaw between her ribs, I force a soulbond on Ceangal, ruining her for all males to come. Once I put my child in her belly, her influential father has no choice but to support my claim.

With my tribe at the brink of collapse, the female’s reluctance toward me means nothing. I stole her soul, yes, but she will surrender her body. Come her next heat, she will beg me to fill her with what only I can give.

It may save my tribe.
Or destroy us both.

Stolen by the Warlord is a full-length novel, and the first book in the Sci-Fi Romance series Ash Planet Warriors. While this is a spin-off to Garrison Earth, taking place 20 years after the invasion, the series can be read on its own.

I really enjoyed this, especially the concept of soul binding. It was very well written between the two MCs and made me feel their connection. I really liked how they came together in the end and defended one another.
I'm a sucker for when a love interest tries to sacrifice herself/himself for the other
and this one had that in spades.
The only reason it's not a 5* is because of the alien terminology that was littered around the prose. It was hard to keep up and just made it more difficult for me to immerse myself in the writing. A little is fine, but this had too much.

The cover... ridiculous.
The blurb... not worthy of this story.
This book... so much better than I could have expected!

Toagi was seen as a rebel warlord, his rightful claim deemed unsubstantiated, and he was treated as scum. All he wanted was to protect his people, ALL of his people, and his tribe needed help. To solve his problem, he stole the intended bride of another warlord, a woman of power, bonded her, determined to make things right. He didn't intend to fall for her.

Her anxiety. Her doubt. Her anger. I felt it stronger than anything else before. Because I'd exposed the pains of her soul.

For her part, Ceangal didn't go quietly into the good night. She was smart and despite some early misconceptions based on rumors and not fact, she came to see that Toagi was so much more than people made him out to be. She discovered that he was honorable, loyal, intelligent, and probably the best male she'd ever known.

He would take my mate from me, the only male where my dreams went hand in hand with my duties. The rebel who'd stolen my soul and conquered my heart. The bastard who might have been nobody to many, but he was somebody special to me. And I would lose him if I didn't claim my own damn life, and become what I was always destined to be.
A bridge.
Not between worlds.
Between warlords.

I adored this story. I enjoyed the characters, the plot, the underlying tension of the warlords and the world they inhabit, basically everything. Honestly, the only reason I didn't give this five stars was due to the fact that a lot of words from an alien language were used without definition. I had to try to work out the meanings myself, which was a bit tiresome. Other than that, this book was perfection for me and if you're someone who loves alien romance with plenty of heart and substance, you'll love this!

Surprisingly great! Toagi was such an in-depth, multi-faceted character, and he was what made this book shine. I could have used a bit more development from Ceangal, but she was pretty awesome and, I thought, level headed. Will definitely be reading on in the series!

I am really liking these types of aliens!
It’s smutty.
They have horns.
A tail.
Muscles.
Honor.
Pride.
A loincloth😈

The plot was engaging, but I did miss some “BOOM”.
I wasn’t overly fond of your heroine. She seems a little bland. But I loved how they found each other. 🔆

We’re back to knots/humming-purring/bonds/heat ya’ll ! 🥰

This was so close to being a full 5 stars but some things definitely fell flat. I enjoyed the concept and all the characters! Toagi (H) is so precious 🥰 and once the h started coming around I liked her too. My anxiety was so high at the possible outcome that I was speed reading through the last half. 😩

But here’s where my personal rating lowers a little;
I think I’m just used to reading more descriptive writing so although I did feel like the MC’s had feelings towards each other, there were just some instances where i felt the dialogue seemed stiff and the interactions very basically described where other moments there was a little bit more description and fluid dialogue. The bond the MCs felt was supposed to be this intense, strong connection that if the writing had been more descriptive I really feel like it could’ve packed a punch on making the reader feel the feelings.

And finally, as with almost every other single story I’ve read, the ending left me wanting. There’s no epilogue and though it ends at a pretty decent place, I wanted more of them.😭

Anyways. This was pretty great since it reminded me im still very into the mates and knotting things.

No sharing, no cheating 🥰

It doesn’t matter what type of alien it is, more humanoid pink with blue horns or with a tail claw, Vanessa knows how to deliver!!!!

I was so excited when I found out that we were getting a spin off 20 years later from the Garrison Earth series with the Jal’zar. Since we first read about that species I’ve been dying to get my hands on their stories, and Vanessa kicked the door down with the start of this series with Toagi and Ceangal! I have to say that I love me some fated mates. But who in the hell knew how damn hot it would be to not have a person you’re destined to be with, but instead have a soulbond forced on you with a sting between your ribs that makes you want to jump your new mates bones?! I know I didn’t, but I’m damn well next in line!

Toagi and Ceangal’s relationship for obvious reasons, got off to a pretty rocky start to say the least. Toagi’s sole focus was to gain what he felt has been rightly his, and was willing to use Ceangal to achieve that. However, the more time he spent with her he started to realize she wasn’t a pawn or a ticket but his kunazay. I loved how the relationship between them didn’t just grow over night. We got to see misconceptions they have about each other change and it helped them to recognize that the broken pieces within themselves matched up perfectly within each other. Their story had just the right amount of angst as well as some SUPER HOT SEXY TIMES to keep you completely in tune with the story. I am beyond excited to read about how our other warlords are going to be tamed. If you love fierce females, super hot virile aliens, with a nice dose of angst, this book is definitely for you!

DNF. Halfway into the book and I don’t care about these characters at all. I probably should have known going in that this book wasn’t for me. I really hate when the alien male does something to the woman (stings her with his tail) and it chemically changes her body and puts her into heat and “readies” her body to receive him. I mean, c’mon, he might as well roofie her!! That’s not romance, that’s sexual assault. Granted, the woman in this book resists the bond that his sting instigates and we’re supposed to think she falls in love with him naturally, and I’m sure she does for the most part, but she also starts feeling his emotions and feeling drawn to him. I can’t trust that because it was inflicted on her and not of her own volition.

Plus, not a whole lot is happening so far, so I’m a bit bored with the book too. I’ve got a few hundred other books waiting to be read and I’m on vacation right now, so I’m not in the mood to slog through something that’s not holding my interest.

It’s well written, with decent characters, and I really liked one of Ludwig’s other series, so it’s probably just me, not the book. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Stolen By The Warlord is the story of Toagi, a young warlord struggling to take care of his tribe, and Ceangal, a Vetusian hybrid.

Remember baby Ceangal from book 1 of Garrison Earth? Eden and Torin’s daughter? She’s all grown up now and on her way to the ash planet Solgad for a political marriage.

Toagi and Ceangal are very special characters that I absolutely fell in love with. Both carry burdens and obligations not of their own making, and this makes for an angst-ridden tale with vivid imagery and emotion packed scenes. These two will steal your heart.

As much as I love this couple, though, I’ve got my eye set on Warlord Katedo, an older, grumpy, scarred male unlucky in love.

3⭐️ I know!! I know how awful this cover is, but I promise you the book is sooo much better than this horrendous cover.

This was a quick and fun read about a rebel warlord who stole the fiance of another warlord in order to save his tribe. It’s a bit more complicated than that but that’s basically the gist of it.

I also loved the concept of this world, the mate aspect of it, the fact that they can decide who they get mated to. At times, it kind of reminded me of the series „Horde Kings of Dakkar“ which I happen to love.

I wish it had a bit more depth to it, but for the most part, it was good. It was fast paced, it had a bit of angst as well and the sex was so spicy that I need to drown myself in holy water in order to clean my mind from all that dirty talk.😂

I will continue the series.

“To one warlord, I was an arrangement. To another, I was a pawn.”

Ceangal is under a very important arranged marriage to bring peace between two very powerful rulers.
“A bridge between two worlds.”

She knows how important it is for her father and her people to marry a Jal’zar warlord.
But before this even happened, Another Jal’zar male kidnaps her claiming to be a warlord himself, he has his own reasons for kidnapping her and challenges his rightful place. He has his reasons.

Toagi is a cocky and delicious character. These species have a very interesting anatomy. And a way of claiming their females. I love the entire world building and the different take on mates.
I mean they sting you in between your ribs with a Barb on their tail which then you literally become one soul together. It’s actually a really romantic and really cute when you read the full story.

This is an enemies to lovers, forced mating, Love story.

Both characters have secrets they must reveal in order to open themselves up to each other and have the bond work between the two.

I absolutely love V.K. Ludwig. This is only my second book that I have read by this author, however her take on sci-fi romance is so unique and so different than many others that I have read. At times it can feel like you are reading the same book but that’s not the case with the specific author. Her worlds are so different and so unique and I just love reading them as a pallet cleanser in between my contemporary romance books. 5/5⭐️
I highly recommend for all sci-fi romance lovers.

kept me spellbound

This story drew me in from the first page. It was extremely well written with great world building and an emotionally intense romance. I love the captured bride trope and this didn’t let down. The hero was feral, wild, but also fiercely intelligent and underneath his ferocity he hid vulnerability and scars he carried from his childhood—and thru the bond with his mate he found love and acceptance that had always been denied him. I loved the heroine, she was strong without being obnoxious and bitchy, resourceful and giving.

Safe. Hero’s past is murky, although he mentions he doesn’t have much experience. Would’ve preferred none, but oh well, can’t have it all. Heroine is a virgin and belongs only to the hero, which is refreshing for a sci fi romance. Even tho she was betrothed to another, it was a political alliance and nothing physical occurs between them, giving the hero the honor of claiming her virginity for himself. No cheating or abuse. Sadly no babies, it’s only hinted at the possibility, which is why I’m dropping this to 3 stars since the blurb set up the expectations that there would be baby making. HEA but no epilogue.

DNF @ 23%
Having not read anything by this author before, I'm not sure if this world had already been explored in some of their previous books. As someone coming in brand new, I felt that there was too much information thrown at me at once and nothing really explained. As I only made it 23% into the book it may have been made clearer later on - however after the actions of the MMC there was no way I was going to be able to support him as the male love interest. He kidnaps her and violates her forcing a "soul bond". But no worries because he won't force her to have sex with him until she's ready. Which she supposedly won't be able to resist because of the bond. What a great guy.

Yeah, no.

I don't care what his motivations were, some things are inexcusable.

It's a shame because I was interested to learn more about the FMC who seemed like she would be an interesting character, but anything other than her destroying the MMC would have been disappointing, and I suspect that is not where the book was heading.

Ceangal is a strong female from the Empire that has agreed to marry in order to help bring peace to two enemies.  Toagi is a warlord on the outs that decides to kidnap her from her intended arranged marriage in order to help solidify his status and tribe.  This is a good enemies to lovers story.. maybe more on her side than his :)  I really liked Toagi, he was strong but has a vulnerable side that starts peeking through the more he is around his captive.  This book had a lot of character development and depth. There is a lot of talk of breeding in this book, so if that's not your thing, just a heads up :)  I'm not a big fan, but even apart from that, its still a solid story that I would recommend if you like alien books.

I enjoyed the world building and the story. But I think it missed romance. 😕 I needed more of those sweet moments together before the I love yous

I think the FMC didn't have enough character growth moments for me. But the MMC really shines

Stolen by the Warlord is book 1 in the Ash Planet Warriors series. After enjoying another series by this author, I couldn't wait to tackle the backlog of books. While I enjoyed this book, I found it slow and it didn't grab me like the other books. Toagi and Ceangal were great together. I loved how they filled the emptiness they each had and how respect and patience lead them to love.

Stolen by the Warlord is the first book in a new series (Ash Planet Warriors) by V.K. Ludwig and is a spinoff of her Garrison Earth series, taking place 20 years in the future. This is a new to me author and the book can be read as a standalone. Ceangal is the daughter of a political leader from Earth and willingly enters an arranged marriage with a warrior from another planet. When she arrives, she is kidnapped by a rogue warlord who wants to claim and impregnate her in an attempt to legitimize his claim. Once he stings her with his tailclaw, they are inevitable, but even then he works for her heart. The stakes in their story are high and it will take work and support from unexpected places to make it all work out in the end.

I’m so glad I picked this up - this book is fantastic! The world building is great and the writing is spot on. It is extremely fast paced with an interesting plot and easily kept my attention to the end. The characters are wonderful. Ceangal is the definition of a warrior bride with a steadfast heart and fearless soul who will put her life on the line for those she loves. Toagi was her perfect compliment, being very similar in nature. They also had very similar upbringings. Always being watched as if under a microscope, always feeling like they didn’t measure up. Her for being the daughter of a politician who failed her finals in a warrior stratum and him as the bastard of the warchief who was never meant to exist. The chemistry between them was awesome and there was a ton of smexy buildup even though you knew they were inevitable. A definite recommend from me and I can’t wait to read more!

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Trope: Enemies to lovers

Smexy: 🔥🔥🔥

2.5 rounded up to 3 stars

I was looking for something similar to the Horde Kings of Dakkar series by Zoey Draven and this is the closest I have come to it. This is by no means on par with the Horde Kings series, at least not this first book but it is the first one I have found where the alien-kidnapping-a-female-from-earth trope isn't there and god was it a long search.

The worldbuilding in this is decent, nothing amazing but nothing flimsy either. The story gets into the nitty gritty of it from the get go, which I liked very much. The h I liked very much. She wasn't a doormat and definitely not an idiot who tried to behave as though she knew better on an alien planet-those I hate the most! So, that was a nice welcome surprise. She is resourceful, intelligent, knows when to bend and when to stand up for herself and isn't too proud to ask for help or admit when she is wrong.
The H I loved for how compassionate and self sacrificing he was. The betterment of his people is all he wants and he is willing to achieve it by any means necessary. But of course he realizes the flaw in his thinking and tries to rectify it as much as he can.
What I didn't like is the pacing. As much as I loved the characters, it felt like chunks of their life and interactions were missing, like pages torn off from a book. I would have liked more scenes to see more of their chemistry and see their relationship grow. And that problem wasn't just with the MCs but with the secondary characters too. As though there was a word limit, the author seemed to cut off a lot of scenes that would have explained the animosity between the warlords or how the secondary love story between the FMC's uiri and a warrior of the MMC. Overall not a bad book but not the best either.

Oh my! Such an amazing story! I love the vulnerability of the characters! At first glance they all appear hard and unmoving, but then the author digs deeper and you realize they are weary and damaged by life. The storyline is fantastic and I enjoyed the journey they made on the way to their HEA. Each turn of the page brought a new situation, keeping the story interesting and the intensity high. This is a wonderful series starter and the perfect weekend read. I can’t wait to see what happens next on this dusty planet.

OMG W H A T

the author cannot be serious with that blurb

then again I guess she is

also I just borrowed this from Kindle Unlimited so the cover worked, despite the atrocious blurb. should I be worried? Is this a situation where I look at my trash-filled tbr pile and the trash pile looks back?

I wanted to like this but god, it was very poorly written. There were numerous times when I thought, “Wait. What is happening?” due to how little detail was given when describing scenes. Considering how good most of the reviews are, I’ve been looking forward to reading it but overall, it was hard to finish. This author has much better books.

Short Review

3.5✨

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started this series. I mean, I’m the type of person who judges a book by its cover and this series…doesn’t exactly have the best covers. ...yeah...

But they have some pretty darn good stories! Starting with this one!

I was a bit wary due to the synopsis, in particular worried it would get dark, but it doesn’t. Character motivations are laid out early and you come to understand them well.

I loved the romance, the leads, the plot, all of it, really. I think it lost me a bit in the climax. The finish wasn’t as strong as the start and middle, but I still left wanting more. So it did it’s job quite well!

The planes are filled with dangers, but Ceangal is strong. She won't bow before the rebel who stole her, nor will she bend beneath the hot sun and foreign nights. She won't fail to escape - and return to the political landscape where she belongs. Her plan is foolproof, except for one flaw - she's never felt so free.

There's nothing Toagi wouldn't do to assure the survival of his tribe, but he lives in a world of rejection. Dubbed a rebel, denied his right to rule, he's left with no choice but to ransom his future to assure the survival of his people.

Soul bound to a woman he doesn't like, forced to contemplate consummating a bond neither of them want, poised on the edge of moral collapse, Toagi has never felt so trapped.

Enemies to lovers

Misunderstanding to communicating

Political marriage to fated forever

This book had a lot of character development and depth. The synopsis makes it sound like a load of smutt, and there was a lot of dirty talk, but I think there were only like, three, maybe four sex scenes?

I thought this was a great read and I'm definitely going back for more! 😁👍

⚠️ If you're a sensitive reader probably you should stay away.

5 sweet humming stars!

I don’t know how VK Ludwig does this. Her sci-fi romances are always so much more than what I bargained for. All I wanted was a hot alien hero and a sexy, spicy read…well, I got all of this from Toagi. And more. A lush world, a solid plot, and a heart melting romance. I got Rapunzel (Flynn Ryder, anyone??) x Avatar vibes from this one! There were also instances where I wondered if the plot was ‘too easy’ or if worldbuilding defied its own rules… only to be blown away as the pieces clicked later on. Love it when that happens!
I may have also sniffled on a couple of instances. I felt Ceangal’s love for her rebel warlord right in the gut… like I’ve been stung by his tail claw. *swoons*

I love how genuine and raw this author writes her characters. They always get me right in the feels. The slow-burn is just exquisitely, and painstakingly crafted. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite series. I can’t wait to read another one!

Do yourself a favor and read them in order unlike me 😅 you’ll enjoy getting to know the world and characters better.

Ceangal + Toagi

Yeah baby, let the political arranged marriages begin! This was fun because I just dove in, I didn't read the blurb to see who the pair would be. I knew Ceangal would be in this series because of the book 1 author note, but didn't know who the hero would be and I think the author tried to tease us.

Ceangal is arranged to be wed to a Solgad Warlord to unite Earth and Solgad. She is arragned to a different warlord, one who has loved and lost and has no interest in a true marriage but by name only. The hero shows up and then shakes things up and maybe steals the bride forming a soulbond with her so that nobody can take her back and that the other warlords will finally recognize him as the true warlord of his clan.

Very angsty, very hate to love and again reminiscent of her parents romance a bit. A lot of great lines that I don't think I highlighted unfortunately, I literally didn't want to take the 2 seconds it takes to stop and highlight a passage, I just wanted to keep reading! But, there are many great phrases comparing these two in the likes of: She is a Someone, He is a Nobody.

They bond over having traumatic and interesting upbringings. Both used to scheming, so they try to be sneaky and scheme a bit with each other but can't quite pull it off. Very fun and a great official start to the series.
