THESE X-MEN ARE... FEARLESS! The heroes of Krakoa are here to save the planet! Things might be complicated between the nation of Krakoa and the rest of the world, but to the X-MEN, things are simple — you do what’s right, you protect those who need protecting and you save the world we all share. Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Sunfire, Rogue, Wolverine, Synch and Polaris are the chosen champions of mutantkind, and they will not shrink from any battle for their home planet. Writer Gerry Duggan (MARAUDERS, DEADPOOL, UNCANNY AVENGERS) reteams with superstar artist Pepe Larraz (HOUSE OF X, X OF SWORDS, UNCANNY AVENGERS) to chart the course of the X-Men in a world of the Reign of X!
Well, well. I put off reading this relaunch and then actually liked it a lot more than I expected. Larraz’s art makes it all work, and while I am still not super into the new team this is at least a promising step in the right direction. Less parties, more action and X-Men might have me on the hook again.
If you want an X-Men #1 these days you just have to wait a little while and a new one will come along!
The new X-Men team, elected during the recent Hellfire Gala, sets up a new base right in the heart of New York City. I'm glad we're not heading back to the mansion, and I honestly hope we never hit that particular reset button again (although I'm sure that eventually the X-office will be taken over by people who grew up on the 90s cartoon and the Jim Lee X-Men #1 and we'll be right back there again). So, no, no mansion. A tree house.
Yes, you read that right, the X-Men's new base of operations is a tree house. An awesome Krakoan tree house. And I kinda love it.
This issue sees them take on a Kaiju-like monster in New York city, and so they essentially combine their powers to build their own Jaeger. It's awesome. And definitely a new an interesting way to have the team combine their powers.
It seems this Kaiju was sent from an intergalactic space casino, where a selection of aliens were betting on its success or failure. Also, the High Evolutionary was there. He didn't say anything or do anything but the art very pointedly showed him to us. I'm hoping this proves to be significant.
The art, by Pepe Larraz and Marta Gracia is spectacular, and everything we've come to expect from a modern X-book.
This issue WANTED to be like the classic X-Men #1 in the early 90s. The cover was even a vague homage to that classic cover. But, it's just not the same quality level. The characters here rarely get to showcase much personality, the art is not as refined as that classic issue was, and just... No.
Great start to the relaunch. Excellent artwork. As hoped, this comes off as something new and exciting rather than a continuation of what came before it. The action sequences are dynamic in a way that I feel has been lacking across the X-titles - a modern rendering of a classic superhero battle. Nothing too convoluted or wordy and the stage has been set for more of the same.
Larraz deserves a better writer for his amazing art. Duggan isn’t bad and can be good at times but he always ruins any good story he writes and his writing doesn’t match the Epic ness of the art. Im happy to see a more traditional x-men team I just want to see Hickman writing it thats who we’re here for we want to see his vision play out not Duggan waste our time and never go anywhere.
I’ve never read any X-Men comics before so this probably isn’t a good start for me given how much history I’m missing, but damn this is an amazing start to a new series; I’m super invested already!
Being positive I really liked this. It hit the X-Men note of having a powerful team, a powerful enemy and lots of smash and bang. Good stuff. All the team got to use their powers and it was paced well with good art.
I knocked a star off as I just found the intrigue at the end a little underwhelming, I don't want a random, weird and, frankly, boring evil genius type with a ridiculously over complicated plan. There's too bloody much of that in the wider X arc.
The idea of them finding out the people behind the resserection protocol and then, probably, trying to shut this down. Interesting. I would assume they have pre made replicas of the 5 on ice that can be activated by Xavier/Emma/Jean if something goes wrong otherwise it's a hilariously poor point of failure.
Anyway, good start and heres hoping it carries on forward.
I love the fact that Polaris is finally getting the recognition she deserves. The fact that the first 2 X-women are finally back together was what brought me to read this book. Jean and Lorna are my fav x ladies. This was a really enjoyable, really worthwhile start to the new X-Men series. I think Duggan and Larraz really knocked it out of the park making this relaunch feel new, feel big and feel exciting.
X-Men #1 returns the mutant team to its super heroic roots, with a creative team willing to up the scale of the challenges that Cyclops and his companions will face. If you have been following the X-Men franchise since its relaunch or if you’re a new reader, this is a perfect jumping-on point for readers.
Overall X-Men brings back the classic superhero book we all know and love. It's such a fun and fantastic read that everyone should check it out.
Thankfully Johnathan Hickman is off the X-Men title, unfortunately his idea's have carried over. They're still pod people that can never die, but at least in this there back saving people again.
It starts with Ben Urich talking to Cyclops about trees and then goes onto the X-Men thinking of a name for their new plane. Followed by two giants fighting in Manhattan, throughout there is rambling, which is probably going to be the next big bad.
It's ok, it's an improvement over the last run but I wouldn't say it's good. There is a lot of talking that just doesn't lead anywhere, with pointless full pages of text. At least this feels like it's trying to inject some fun into the series and hey they are heroes again, instead of being massive douchebags.
I love Hickman, don't get me wrong, but Gerry brings a very fresh dynamic to the X-men core title. It's a superhero book AND the esoteric sci-fi Hickman established. It's fun, it's smart, and it's X-Men. Just good comics.
Great start! The politics of Krakoa were not enough to keep me excited to read my X-books. The roster is really well chosen! Synch isn't a character I expected for the team but seeing what he did for Forge was cool and sheds light on why he was chosen when the other characters were more obvious. The treehouse! This has nothing to do with what I just read but: ever since I watched Swiss Family Robinson as a kid I've wanted to live in a fancy treehouse. lol I even enjoyed the fact sheets in this issue.
I have mixed feelings about Duggan taking over X-Men. I'm excited to see what he does with it while also sad that Hickman isn't writing for it anymore. I think Hickman's storyline was a victim of cross over events (X of Swords and Hellfire Gala) and the pandemic stalling publication for 6 months last year. I liked where he seemed to be going.
I hope Duggan keeps Jean, Cyclops and Wolverine as a throuple. I was SO elated to see the love triangle crap come to an end.
Second reading: I'm not sure when I stopped my weekly ritual of comics and coffee but X-Men #1 seemed like a good place to restart. Depression is a bitch. This team is not the one I expected it the one I would have picked but I like it a lot. Except lady-Wolverine. I don't like her and I don't like the gimmick of her. Love the tree house, the space-casino and the jealous entitled bad guy though. The art is stellar!
