This is what I imagine as a true “enemies to lovers/rivals to allies” novel. Seems a lot of people didn’t really like the characters, but that was my favorite part of this novel 🥰. The overall plot wasn’t really anything unique but there was enough court intrigue and murder mystery solving to keep me invested. The MC and ML are both in very powerful and politically opposing positions and serve an inept Emperor who would rather be a carpenter/artist. I read a beautiful translation that included lots of official art from the audio drama and Weibo and also some incredible fan art.
English title Art Thou Ailing? releasing early 2026
Characters MC Su Shiyu: Court censor, devoted to the throne/country and in turn the Emperor who he grew up with, quiet, calm, appears gentle “most eligible bachelor “, helplessly speechless and exasperated when it comes to the ML. The Emperor adores him and would marry him if he was a woman ML Chu Mingyun: military gong, chatty, teasing, shameless , appears carefree, has a very loyal military following but not popular in court, (reminds me a little of Xiao Chiye). The Emperor fears him but also needs him.
What I loved: 🩷The banter, flirting, and bickering- reminds me a little of Peerless 🩷A nice mix of comedy, angst, conspiracy, and intimacy 🩷Watching them fall in love but one in denial and the other unaware how hard he’s fallen already 🩷Multiple couples (four!) but they don’t get enough time so don’t get too excited 🩷Both are scheming and smart 🩷I know you can protect yourself but let me protect you energy from the ML 🩷Fairly short at 89 chapters/2 extras. The story felt linear and tight with an easy to follow plot and cast of characters 🩷Two fujoshis
If I had some complaints… -Too many side characters that I really liked died -It did get a tiny bit slow at times -Side couples could have used more time/development -Someone tried to murder them in a house at a party? Unbothered. It felt weird that some things would be a huge deal and others they wouldn’t even let anyone know -The ending was crescendoing but then it felt rushed? -I needed more of their happily every after 💔
I felt like the writing and translation was so beautiful and it was a well told story. It has its flaws but I am so excited to get the official translation from Rosmei.
This story started off pretty compelling, with Chu Mingyun pretending to romantically pursue his political rival as a way to get closer and investigate him. However, my enthusiasm fizzled as the main couple seemed stuck in a cycle of teasing-and-resisting for far too long—without any real sparks flying.
The lackluster political plot didn’t help either. Every case ends in the same way without real effort from our couple. Side characters existed solely to push the plot along or drop hints for the main couple before vanishing entirely. It also bothered me how often the main couple charged recklessly into obvious danger, seemingly without any precaution, only to fall into traps over and over. And honestly, the idea of two very young men holding such key positions in court stretched credibility a bit too far for me.
Things did pick up once the stalemate between the main couple finally broke. The story gained some momentum leading into the climax, and we finally got some genuine emotions and angst from both sides. The yearning became palpable, and those moments felt real and rewarding.
Unfortunately, the political plot let me down again. By the climax, things have gotten so messy, and our ML has lost his head completely, he felt like a completely different person. The big showdown left me scratching my head—that’s it? After all that buildup, we were left with such an underwhelming villain? I couldn’t help but feel like the author bit off more than they could chew, and didn’t quite know how to resolve the story. What started as a compelling premise ended up falling short of its potential.
I couldn’t connect with the characters at all they felt too polished. The story is “good” on the surface, but I didn’t sense any depth or character development, and I’m not willing to keep reading just to search for something I might enjoy it would feel like looking for a needle at the bottom of the sea. That said, I’ve enjoyed other slightly similar books, such as Peerless and Faraway Wanderers, but this one simply isn’t my cup of tea.
Picked this up on a whim. This is one of the shorter danmei web novels set in the past. It's a court intrigue novel. The standard tropes are there, the writing style is fairly easy to read. I got a bit bored at about 25% in because the story didn't really hook me and the author kind of tells rather than shows when it comes to the two main characters. I think this would have been an enjoyable read if not for the fact that I'm in a very specific mood.
I don't like the main characters Chu Mingyun (MC) and Su Shiyu (ML). I went into this thinking it was going to be more like 'Golden Terrace' when really it's more like a less complicated version of 'Peerless'.
Kept wishing we were following Qin Zhao (MC's BFF) and Du Yue (ML cousin) because they give off black cat x golden retriever vibes. This was the only romance that held my interest tbh.
I finished this a few days ago thinking it wouldn’t be on goodreads, but I found it due to curiosity and here we are.
Narration: 10/10 the author kept giving me Chinese poem lessons, appreciate(?) except when there’s always a detailed description of how the characters’ hands looked whenever they pick up any and everything
— absolutely such a good read! — imagine plotting something against someone just to end up falling hard for them... oh chusu, you tragic lovebirds 😭 — i was eating up the scheming gong × scheming shou trope like it was my last meal. power moves, emotional damage, and yearning? yes pls. — sooo good!! the angst hit so hard it felt like watching my divorced parents argue 😭 chu mingyun’s longing was so intense, and su shiyu’s avoidant energy just made it even more painful—but in the best way. — the political intrigue?? ate too. like the plotting, power struggles, and tension were actually well-written and made the stakes so real. it wasn’t just romance—it was brains, betrayal, and feels all in one. — the pacing and flow? smooth. every twist and reveal landed perfectly. — the side CPs?? actually iconic. every side character added something and made the story even better. — i still think we deserved a few more chapters post-reunion tho 😭 like i need my chusu crumbs, pls. i know it ended beautifully, but i’m greedy and emotionally attached okay. i just love chusu sm it’s unhealthy. — read this if you’re into scheming gongs who end up falling for their equally scheming shous. basically: scheming, suffering, and soft moments that ruin you in the best way.
I admit that I skipped over some of the plot points, even though this novel is not particularly lengthy, and you can still somewhat understand what's happening. Either way, the characters of this novel... 🤌🤌. I needed another 100 chapters. I feel there were so many things that could be explored more, but still, I loved the two main characters and the side couple (the heterosexual side couple was such a chop though. Straights never serving, what's new 🤦♀️). Su Shiyu was great, but Chu Mingyun? He's like a psychotic Gu Yun and Taxian Jun giving a fuck about his country! You NEVER fail with ancient military men in danmei (because in modern novels is like...). And the way he was unhinged TILL the end, even the translator (very lovely ofc) was scared of his bloodthirst while I was pregnant with our second child already. Also the love quotes in this novel are some of my favorites... this man YEARNS and LOVES. Mingyun you're too cunty. I'm half glad that this novel is not more popular because imagine the discourse. When he killed the rich I was like like let's goooo Mingyun Guevara.
This is a story of blind obedience vs wilful certainty—and asks, when you're faultlessly loyal, are you loyal to the throne or the people?
Su Shiyu and Chu Mingyun are two powerful ministers in Emperor Li Yanzhen's court, the Grand Secretary (aka Imperial Censor) and the Grand Marshal (aka Imperial Marshal), respectively. So powerful, in fact, that if they were any less loyal, the Emperor might as well have been a puppet in their hands, with the rest of the ministers already neatly divided into a Chu Faction and Su Faction.
Be warned here that this review is going to be spoiler heavy:
Su Shiyu has four generations of loyalty to the Li family in his family history. While Chu Mingyun is a new, grassroot soldier who climbed his way up to General, then Marshal. Their political world views greatly differ, even if they do have one common point – the people should not be suffering.
Alas, Emperor Li is truly incompetent ruler. All he is interested in is arts and crafts, and even after a decade of ruling, his political acumen is zero. He has no sense of how a ruler should act, and even less of what a ruler should be like. All his decisions are made on the advice of his ministers, mainly Lord Su and Lord Chu—which, while not a bad thing, is only good in moderation—this man has made not one single self-thought decision for the court.
Actually, I stand corrected. He has made two decisions, both of which were so catastrophic in shifting the political power out of his hands, that even opposing ministers Chu and Su spoke up together in opposing it.
Now, is this anyway related to the romance? Somewhat. Majorly, in fact, because this man and his existence as the Emperor is the sole point of contention between our two leads.
As far as the MC (Chu Mingyun) and ML (Su Shiyu) are crafted, they're actually quite well done. They each have their own motives, strengths and flaws. The development of rivals to comrades to lovers to enemies and back to lovers is convoluted but well done.
As for the other pairings: Qin Zhao is fine as a character, but Du Yue is a joke in the name of a doctor. He barely does anything except act as a go between in a handful of scenes. As for chemistry? Zero, forget it!
Li Yanzhen and Lu Qinghe on the other hand... not a bad pair. Qinghe has her head on straight, and doesn't compromise her own ideals of life to just be with Li Yanzhen.
All in all, a really enjoyable book. The political machinations are well done, the mystery is also well crafted, and the romance once it starts is also pretty sweet though angsty.
As a danmei reader, this is a solid book. It has all the charms of court politics and the chemistry between the characters are undeniably hot 🔥 We have Chu Mingyun and Su Shiyu who are political rivals in the court. Their factions truly hate each other and always scheming. Both MCs are also very cunning in their own ways. When Chu Mingyun decides to pursue Su Shiyu out of selfish reasons, he never would have expected to fall in love the way he did. It was very beautiful to read their journey. The more they get to know each other, the more they fall for other each. However it is definitely not all rosy tinted. Being in opposite factions, they have different political views. Similarly, Su Shiyu’s personality is the type who upholds rules and regulations over everything. So, there is lots of angst before they get their happy ending. The character development is very good as well. They have both grown a lot and even come to understand each other. The political drama and the plot was also very intriguing to read. It’s an amazing book and definitely recommended. I only wish we got to see more of happy moments between the couple.

This was such a fun book! It was written pretty much just for me, from the premise, the character dynamics, the style of flirting.... Love these clowns. Tho the way this book is presented feels like lowkey lying. What enemies to lovers. What evil scheming military officer 😭 I kept joking that my beloved Fengcuis are 300% worse on their good day lol
The romance is very sweet, even if the last third has a lot of miscommunication wrecking havoc on the main couple. The author is absolutely brutal to the side characters (my heart....) while for most of the book, the main couple is essentially untouchable. And the plot is much simpler than it pretends to be. But the writing is so charming and again, the main couple just carries the whole book. It was just such a sweet romance to me. Hilarious, too
English title: Is the Gentlemen Ill? Official translation: Art Thou Ailing? More like a 3.5. Halfway through I paused reading it for a few months so maybe if had read it without the pause, it would have left a bigger impact but I did think the writing was beautiful, the fan translation was lovely and I really enjoyed the banter and scheming between the two main characters. Will definitely get a physical copy!
Summary: Su Shiyu is the civil minister and Chu Mingyun is the minister with the military power. They are both the biggest forces in the court and they are constantly at odds. Chu Mingyun gets the bright idea to get information about Su Shiyu out in the open by declaring that he's actually in love with Su Shiyu. Su Shiyu knows right away it's nonsense but it puts them in situations where they have to be around each other and real feelings soon ensue.
Up to date with the English translation by Uhei to chapter 45 (out of 89). Original danmei period unspecified novel published on jjwcx in 2017, author 如似我闻 (pseudonym) gave Uhei ongoing permission to translate Is The Gentleman Feeling Alright (Chinese title is much more elegant).
MC and ML are the Grand Marshall and Grand Secretary of the Emperor (Right and Left Minister). The court politics and factions are fairly easy to comprehend. MC Chu Mingyun's persistent flirting and pursuing of ML Su Shiyu remind me of Wen Kexing, but Chu's pursuit is pretend. The two team up to solve some court cases and diplomatic difficulties. There are some classic poetry, idioms and text references embedded, which Uhei identified and explained.
A good romance novel should have good character building and plenty of yearning, so this book does it all. It's funny at times but downright nerve-wrecking at times. The character's emotions are almost tangible and so relatable. When Chu looked up, saw Su's face unexpectedly, he decided to give up his struggle to not fall for him; when Su decided to give up on his loyalty for Chu as he saw a red lotus bloomed in the pond, this story has gone up a level. Well, the war and politics in this story are weak and full of plotholes. But hey, if it's so perfect the book will have to sacrifice some parts of the romance, and I wouldn't want that.
Between romance, ideals and politics, our MCs face many difficulties, and have very little opportunity to communicate their true feelings, each thinking they are being manipulated by the other at some point in the story. I'm not a fan of miscommunication tropes, but here I found that's what made me love their relationship, even when we might think everything's going well there are doubts, but you can't blame them because the future of the country is at stake and their feelings can't take precedence. The politics weren't very complicated, perhaps slightly too simple, but it was very interesting nonetheless, not a dull moment. I loved the characters in this novel, especially Su Shiyu, who stays true to his ideals until the end.
I read this a while ago and forgot to put it here, but I still remember the "your highness, do you still find me pretty?" from chu mingyun because is was THAT powerful.
anyway I enjoyed this! it was not very long and what can I say, I am a big fan at fake relationships that turn out to be real because the fake feelings weren't that fake at the end (bonus points if they start as enemies).
the angst had me on the floor, but it made the ending even better ;; tho I would have loved a bit more chapters once everything got resolved, but maybe I just wanted to read more about them.
First of all, absolutely love the way this author describes emotions and sceneries. The main couple have chemistry (which i love first thing on a book) and the side couple was cute (tho I wish they had more stuff going on between the chapters). The ending is happy but I felt it bittersweet. Not satisfying enough regarding a certain villain’s death and the aftermath of all the mess Chu Mingyun did tho. In the end I was a little confused about his goal, but other than that fun political story.
I want to for the sake of; but can't be compelled to finish. At chapter 66 done, I've been past the 70% mark. I read how they are in love, but I can't feel it. It's all bland: the plot, the romance.
one would think 89 chapters + 3 extras is a lot, but honestly I could read 200+ chapters of them just living their daily life 😭😭 I loved this so much it's been so long since I've read a wuxia novel I can't wait for the physical book to be released 🫶🏼 I didn't want this to end
4.5 ⭐ Amé el final 😭❤️, por un momento tuve miedo pues faltaban 7 capítulos y no veía como esto llegaría a resolverse en tan poco tiempo. Me encariñé demasiado de ambos personajes 💘
I loved the couple dynamic so much but unfortunately the way some side characters were treated for the (to me) unnecessary shock value that didn't even contribute much to the plot other than breaking my heart severely ... is something that made it a bit less enjoyable to read.
That was however my lesser gripe with this book, those last 200 pages are the main reason I'm kind of left unsatisfied. The ending is happy don't get me wrong but is it good? idk... it's not quite what I expected nor really enjoyed much. These last pages felt so chaotic in comparison to the rest of the really well written plot which confused me so much!! I loved it all so much until that point where I realised that even at almost the end of the novel things are suddenly getting worse and the characters seemingly won't clear up their misunderstandings until the very last second (which indeed happened. with only 30 pages left from bout 1000 pages total...) The political intrigue seemed promising at first and I thought it will get a satisfying resolution at the end but ...unfortunately that didn't happen 😅 the resolution of all the problems that were piling up throughout the story gets kind of dumped on the reader at the very end to quickly reach the happy ending it seemed like. So if you want to enjoy this story don't expect too much of a well thought out crime solving strategy or political intrigue from it.
In conclusion, lovely characters, 12/10 dynamic between the main characters (if you look away from whatever happened there shortly after the Huainan arc, they carried this novel fr), very lovely story telling and pacing for 3/4 of the novel until suddenly the pace is all over the place for the last 1/4. And you are left asking "huh? wtf just happened? is that... it?" But also this could just be me and I had a bit too high of an expectation from reading really well written political intrigue novels previously... The ending loops back around to being sweet but way too short and rushed.
All in all I think I might still give it a reread in the future and ignore the last bit because despite it all the writing is still really good and the author really knows how to write tension loaded moments between character really well. Some scenes made my scalp cribble from how much sexual tension there was in the air. It was THAT good!
“yes, you do exist in my heart. you have, ever since the beginning. no one else—just you”
4.5 do you hear me screaming. such a random recommendation i found off twitter and i’m so glad i decided to read it !! enemies to lovers with court politics is such a good combination that the author (and the tl) did so well with.
fantl (by halfeatenmantou) reread before it gets taken down 22/08/25: UGH i still love it and i’m so excited for whenever the vol 1 physicals ships out next year
