Carnage in America: Covid-19, Racial Injustice, and the Demise of Donald Trump

Rate this book
In 1970, at the beginning of a glorious career, a newly graduated Harvard Medical School physician named Michael Crichton published "Five Patients". This book was an insightful and captivating study of practicing medicine that wove medical history and trends in society into intimate portrayals of humans facing tragic health challenges. In "Carnage in America," Dr. Steve Weiss has updated this approach 50 years later, with no less literary power. He has written an eloquent and touching testimony of a physician in the front lines of the battle with COVID-19 in a small Midwestern city. His thoughtful stories connect the lives of his patients with the big issues in our the breakdown of civility, political indoctrination, and lack of trust in scientists and public health officials. It is a must read. -Dr. Paul Thomas, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

In 2021 we are slowly moving forward and away from the COVID pandemic of 2020. In hindsight, we are more and more unveiling the mistakes of the medical community, but most glaringly, the political realm. By failing to heed warnings from both the medical and scientific communities in late 2019, and instead promoting unproven and dangerous theories, US President Donald Trump revealed his sheer ineptitude and incompetence to hold his office. This total failure of leadership cost the lives of thousands of American citizens and brought needless stress and devastation into the American economy and the lives of working people of all races and social standings. Weiss keenly notes that Trump will go down alongside Buchanan and Harding as one of the worst Presidents in our national history.

This book is a compilation of daily blogs which Dr Weiss wrote going through the heart of the pandemic. He addresses the issues of COVID and his immediate medical practice, but also looks at impacts within our larger social culture. Often cutting, but most always quite insightful, Weiss shares incredible insights of what was really going on behind the scenes as the national sought to handle the epidemic.

But Weiss also has got in trouble. He did not seek the permission of his employer, Mayo Clinic and Hospitals, to write or publish this book. He was equal in both his praise, and his criticism, of Mayo as they addressed the pandemic. The end result was that he was fired. I guess I can get where they are coming from. If you are going to be critical of your employer (not matter how right you are), you can expect that employer to not take kindly to the writing. I can only assume that future printings of the book will contain an added note about this subsequent action by Mayo Clinic.

Many Americans are probably so tired of pandemic discussion that they just want to move one and would not have interest in reading about our most recent history. Yet I found the book very insightful, and I appreciated the courage of Dr Weiss to publish it.

The best comprehensive step by step summary of Covid response

This author deserves great accolades for his honesty, the ability to write so its just like talking to him, coverage of all the world's Covid responses and his very blunt and accurate summation of Trump's brokenness and ineptitude as a President. As I read this book, so many times I caught myself saying thank God for a doctor giving us an inside view about Covid's horrible affects on patients and the medical staff's sacrifices and struggles to give their best every step of the way.

I feel sorry for Dr Weiss. The truth is coming out about Dr Fauci. Also, the truth is coming out about AIDS and the Gates Foundation. When the truth is fully revealed there will be a lot of shocked, and sickened people. This doctor will be one of them. He chose to believe political science. Perhaps he should study the Nuremberg Codes then he might understand why Mayo cut him loose.
