New World Shifters #1

Night of the Wolf Moon

Rate this book
I’m not supposed to be sacrificed to the wolves, that fate belongs to my sister.

As the eldest daughter, she’ll join our village’s claimed girls when she turns eighteen. Together, they will go to the wolf shifter city, never to return.

But a terrible tragedy strikes our family, requiring me to go in her stead.

I never trained for what comes next—a glittering world of beautiful people and pretty dresses, a wolf pack entirely made of men, and a dark underbelly sustaining it all.

In the Carolina pack, breaking the rules equals death and competition rules it all.

Twenty girls.

Five men.

The winners get husbands. The losers go to the mating houses. And as for me? I fall for the wrong man.

I’m soon faced with an impossible choice: fight for survival or fight for love.

If I could give - star -20

Are you kidding me with this junk? This is NOT a romance . This whole book is about women.being forced to
1: leave their homes and submit or die
2: compete in a stupid part being a refined lady with painting and every thing from the 1800 and be a warrior to protect children they might have ,only to.have them taken at a certain age to be bad@@s wolves taught to treat woman in same as dad.
3 : be two with lowest scores ? Get forced into sex slavery to get pregnant have kid ,give up.kid go back to sex house
Fated mates ? Well got 1 and It ain't main character it another girl expected to mate with the man that killed her sister for standing up for herself .The way the men treat these woman is appalling .be a sex slave ,be a wife ...for a while .Cause they get to have more after you can't produce kids. And the main girl well alpha of that pack wants her but does things to hurt her heart AND at last min saves her..SAVES her? No Just subjected her to watch another take her place to be raped repeatedly This whole book was disgusting. Not once did any man try to change the way these woman were treated .cause that's just the way it is ..no its just abusive and condoning.
I never raped ,please the time you put a woman in the sex house and you had sex with her you raped her ..end of. This was just sick. Not reading anything else from them. If this is entertaining and romance they were cracked over the head and something leaked out cause this was a rape book through and through 😤

Up all night with this one! Check out my tik tok @upallnightbooks, I cannot wait to review this wolf shifter book. I just finished and I’m dropping all my other ones for the next one in the series. Love poppy and can’t wait to see what happens. This gives me the handmaiden vibes mixed with Harry Potter! Obviously adults only.

I received a copy of this book from authors, Kimberly Loth and Nina Walker. This is my honest review.

Handmaids Tale and The Selections rolled into one, but with apologetically brutal wolf shifter.

Poppy wasn't meant to be part of the claimed. Fourteen minutes made all the difference. Fourteen minutes was the only reason her sister, Willow was going, and not her. When the unthinkable happens and Willow slaps one of the wolves for touching her inappropriately, which results in her death, Poppy is thrusted into her sister's place. One she was never trained to be a part of. With little to no preparation, Poppy must compete against twenty other girls, who have trained their whole lives, to win the heart of one of the five betas to marry, or risk being thrown into a mating house.

Words cannot describe how I felt when reading this book. I was sent on a rollercoaster of emotions that I wasn't even remotely ready for. From the first page to the very last, I was hooked.
Poppy was a lovable character, who was far from perfect. She couldn't read, or write, she wasn't artistic, she was just pretty terrible at every obstacle that was thrown her way. She was the perfect example of a girl not fit to be a beta's wife. I loved the fact that she wasn't perfect, or beautiful. She was just an average plain jane compared to all the other girls around her, but the loving and competitive side of her, makes her a really enjoyable character to read. You are really rooting for her to make it through.
Alpha Prince Ryne is a hard character to read. You think you know his intentions, and then he throws you off that trail. He's a complicated character, and yet a very lovable one at the same time. His character is one I'd love to see how he develops. I feel that there is so many way he could go, and I'm excited to see what happens.
I was a huge fan of Grady. I loved him in so many ways. He really was a great part of the support system for Poppy, and he's an absolute sweetheart!
I am dying for book 2, and you know a book is good when you are desperate for the second one. I was so annoyed at myself for finishing it so quickly, but also annoyed at myself for not being able to devour it quicker! I need answers, and I really can't wait to see what happens!

The synopsis is pretty clear what the expectations of this story is.

As the oldest of 2 sisters, Willow is supposed to be sacrificed to the wolves, that is her fate as the eldest daughter who will join all the other claimed girls when they turn 18. They go to the city of the wolves to "service them". In return, the wolves provide protection to the village. There is no return for these "chosen" girls.

On the night of the choosing Willow stands up to manhandling of the wolves resulting in her being killed for her insubordination.

Her sister Poppy takes her place.

The story rambles on and so did my expectations waiting on the synopsis to deliver the story described.

A supposedly glittering world of beautiful people pretty dresses, a wolf pack entirely made of men, and a dark underbelly sustaining it all.

If you break the rules of the Carolina pack, that equates to your death equals death and competition rules it all.

Twenty girls.

Five men.

The winner will be rewarded with a husband.
The losers go to the mating houses - the authors couldn't quite make up their minds whether this situation should be called a whorehouse, brothel, or mating house.

Soon Poppy is faced with an impossible fight for survival or fight for love.

Sounds good?

I started this expecting all of this to be within the plot but we got nothing like this. The book failed to deliver in many areas.

IF these two authors had delivered this plot then it had the makings of being something very different. Instead, it fell flat, delivered nothing, and ended in a cliffhanger with nothing but a really false expectation.

Book 2 is out on the 3 of August. I am not going to read it. I'll check out whether these two authors actually deliver the plot that I anticipated.

Book 3 not out until 2022.

I don't even know where to start with this book. First, I literally inhaled the book because I could not put it down. Second, the story and characters where spellbinding; I was captured by the mystery and intrigue surrounding the main plot of the book. This story is set in a dystopian future with plenty of mystical elements. Poppy is a simple country-living girl with an extraordinary path set in front of her. She was not supposed to be selected as The Claimed, which are the recently turned 18 year olds that must be sent to the wolf shifters as payment for protection from the evil monsters lycans. When tragedy forces Poppy to replace her sister, she becomes part of the Claimed and meets all the Betas as well as the Alpha, Prince Ryne. Her journey into this new world is filled with betrayal, conspiracy, forbidden love, and fated love. A story rich with enchanting characters and sinister plots, you cannot walk away from it once you start.
I have been fan of Kimberly Loth for many years and she has never failed to delivery fascinating and captivating stories. This latest collaboration with Nina Walker is definitely one for the books! I cannot wait to read the next book of the series!!!
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.

I’m not usually into dystopian books. Books affect my moods and I hate having that hopeless feeling. I didn’t really realize this was dystopian till I was in it. The synopsis was intriguing.
Wolf shifters with The Selection-like premise. Twenty girls, 5 men. I thought it would be more of a romance. I’m still not sorry I read this book because it was excellent. I’m not one to feel strongly about trigger warnings but I felt like this book could have used one. SO I’ll let ya know, there is talk of rape/ forced breeding, and graphic violence.
That being said, This book was action-packed and left me guessing quite a lot. The “family tragedy” That forces Poppy to join the selection was NOT what I was expecting. It was a really thrilling ride. I loved Ryne so much. I loved the friendship between Poppy and Johanna. Grady was also a favorite and I totally shipped him and Johanna.
And let me say for the record… Those wolfmen need to learn a lesson on how to treat a lady. Maybe the fate of the chosen wouldn’t be so horrible if they weren't so cruelly treated. They NEED the ladies, not vice versa. BAD WOLF!!
BTW If you join both author’s Facebook you can get an extra chapter from Ryne’s POV. Trust me, You want it. I loved to get into his head since he needs to keep a tight control over his face. You never can quite tell what he’s thinking.
I can’t wait to get my hands on the next installment! I can’t wait to see how things work out for those poor women forced to be in the wolf city.

The main character, Poppy, along with several other girls, is taken by wolf shifters in place of her sister Willow, who was murdered by the wolves. She soon realises the wolf shifters have forced her and the other women into slavery with the expectation that one day soon those of them not “lucky” enough to be forced into marriage, will instead be sent to wh*re-houses. There they will be r*ped until pregnant, made to carry and birth the child, just to have their baby stolen from them by their r*pist so the whole process can start again. For some reason the book never actually calls this what it is, instead referring to it as “forced breeding”, I guess because the love interest visits these brothels where women who have no choice but to submit to him, but outright calling him a r*pist would make it difficult for readers to romanticise him.

Instead of despising the species that has done this to them and countless other women, Poppy spends her time either gawking at the shifter responsible for the whole hellish situation, or angry at the other enslaved women and getting into petty arguments with them. I have never read such an un-relatable character. Who sees their sister groped and murdered, then not even a day later is lusting after the creature responsible for enforcing that kind of behaviour, as well as complaining how her dead sisters clothes don’t fit her?? Couldn’t be bothered to continue reading after that bit.

I haven't found a shifter book that I've loved and devoured in a long time, but Night of The Wolf Moon swallowed me whole.
Within the first few pages, I was caught hook, line and sinker. Poppy and Ryne were absolutely magnetic characters, even "minor" background characters had me fully invested, dying to know what happens next, not only with the main characters, but also all the secondary ones as well. Waiting for book two might just kill me, but I'll be picking it up the second I can! 😍😍

Let me start my review by telling you that this book was such a different read from the typical fantasy book I like to grab. I love the whole 'world of shapeshifters' but this book also had a touch of dystopian and fantasy and it made it the perfect read. I have to admit that this one was my first ebook, although I am not a digital reader I finished reading this one in two days. I think it's because of the way the story is being told and how the writers just pull you into their story (if you like it or not). I had to get past the first chapter, but after that things turned so fast, and before I knew it I finished the read and now I am desperate for the second book. I read it was going to be published in August 2021, this is going to be such a torment. | Advance Review Copy generously provided by Nina Walker (one of the writers of this book), all opinions in this review are my own.

"𝘏𝘦'𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭. 𝘖𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦, 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦'𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘩𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳-𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘵. 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘵, 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘰𝘬𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥."

𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝑰 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆𝒅:
• The storyline; isn't your typical 'shapeshiter' storyline, it's more like the selection meets the hunger games 18+. The writers gave a whole new meaning to the world 'shapeshifter' and I can't wait to find out more of the world and tribes they created, we only had the chance to learn about the 'wolves' who knows what more is out there for us readers to discover in the next book(s).
• Humor mixed with sarcasm; I loved the funny dialogues between some of the characters and I didn't expect to find this type of humor in a book where violence and abuse is a big subject.
• Joanna & Grady; can they get any cuter? I was rooting for them from the start, I am so curious to find how Grady will behave once he knows... The truth.
• Strong female characters; I love Poppy! She is quiet, shy, innocent, and not what you would call your typical female lead. She is loyal, has her own opinions, and yet uneducated. She is growing up with every chapter, finding her own voice, and learning to stand on her own two feet in a world where women (girls) are made to bend. As a reader, you get the chance to see her growth and somehow that makes you support her character even more. I am rooting for Poppy and the ending was such a thrilling yet surprising cliffhanger. I really need the second book ... NOW!
• I am planning on buying the paperback, although it's quite expensive in the Netherlands. It's just a book I need and the cover is gorgous!

𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝑰 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆𝒅:
• I disliked Ryne, he is trying not to be like his father, and surely he isn't ... just yet. Ryne is going to end up looking like his father, the Alpha King if he keeps up walking on this path he has chosen for himself. The path of dreaming of changing things, but being too much of a coward to do anything to make those changes happen. He is playing with Poppy's feelings, especially when he decided to ignore his feelings and the bound just because of his fears for his father.
• The ending for Madame Nova ... This truly broke my heart!

Well written, no grammatical errors, end on cliff hanger with nothing resolved. Dystopia society were wolves use human women for forced breeding/rape. Has a hunger games vibe of each village contributes to the whole such as one village is the distillery, one sews and making clothing, one is gardeners. These women compete for a place for marriage to a beta wolf until, they no longer can have children then are set aside for a new wife. Those not selected for the betas as wives are sent to a breeding house to breed more wolves from multiple different wolves. So if you have issues with this you will have problems with this book. I marked book down for cliff hanger, and the hunger game vibes.

ENGLISH:

The time has come to collect the claimed ones, young people who must be handed over to the wolf shifters to lead a life of servitude in exchange for protection from the dangerous lycans, mutated humans that can devastate entire villages. This was not supposed to be Poppy's fate, it was her twin sister's future. But all her plans change when tragedy comes into their lives. Poppy becomes a claimed, but her life won't be at all how she thought. She must compete with other girls to conquer the beta wolves, taking classes that will make her earn or lose points. Only five of them will end up married, while the others will be sent to mating houses. In a violent and abusive society, Poppy will try to do whatever it takes to survive, even ignoring her own feelings when she falls for someone who is completely forbidden.

Thank you so much to the authors for the book!
I received this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

The plot of this book is really entertaining. It hooked me from the first to the last page in an addictive read. I really liked the characters, each one of them was very interesting. We see Poppy go through her pain and helplessness, through her hard but almost ineffective work to improve in the required activities and not end with the worst destiny. But her potential as a warrior is impressive, I really want to see how this character will evolve. On the other hand, Ryne was so intriguing and caught my attention from the first time he showed up. The alpha prince is in a constant struggle between what he feels and how he's supposed to act, which made him very interesting. I really liked the way he tries to protect Poppy and steal forbidden moments with her, I loved their interactions. But my favorite character was Joanna with her rebellious and combative spirit, fighting against this terrible patriarchal and abusive world, supporting Poppy all the time. Their friendship was so special. On the other hand, I hated a few characters who were really horrible.

In fact, the entire world of the wolves was aberrant and so creepy. The way they treat humans, and especially women, is terrible. Hence the importance of fighting against this entire system. Some sensitive topics are covered in this book related to violence and abuse, which made the reading much more complex. There are tons of drama and situations that filled me with anguish and a lot of emotions. There is also a beautiful romance that left me wanting more. A forbidden romance.

There are some scenes full of tension and adrenaline. I thought it was fascinating all the supernatural side of this book with the wolf shifters, the lycans and what has happened to our world. It was very dark. I love that dark and disturbing touch that this story has. Plus, it has several interesting twists and turns and a heart-stopping ending that left me desperate to read the next book. I really liked this story, I can't wait to know how it continues.

Night of the Wolf Moon by Kimberly Loth and Nina Walker is the first book in their paranormal romance/dystopian New World Shifter series. I'm going to say this right off the bat --- ignore the negative reviews. This book is not for everyone because of the dramatic elements exhibited in this novel, but don't let the negative reviews sway from you reading this book. It's really good! Yes, there are some things that not everyone will like, but not every book is a good fit for everyone. The authors grabbed me from the beginning, had my jaw dropping more than once, and kept me page-turning to the end. I couldn't put this book down.
Poppy wasn't born first, so she wasn't meant to be one of the claimed, but when tragedy strikes, she must take her sister Willow's place. Poppy has no idea what she is in for when she goes with the shifters who protect her village and family, but she's going to get a crash course in the dangers that surround her and that she faces in the days, weeks, and months ahead. She's shown what will happen to her if she fails to match up with a beta and hold his interest and it's not a fate she's going to want, but there is more danger to be faced.
There is nothing overly graphic or extreme in this book, so take what the negative reviews say with a grain of salt. I promise it's not as bad as they paint it to be. My only recommendation is this --- if you enjoy books by these two authors, pick this book up and read for yourself what is enclosed in these pages. You'll be surprised at the slow romance that builds, and the dangers that Poppy faces.
I'm rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. For me, this book was an excellent story and I can't wait to find out what happens next. If you don't like darker elements this book might not be a good fit for you, but try it before you judge it.

Unputdownable!!! 🖤
This phenomenal installment with suck you in from the first page till the last one, leaving you eager for more... The angst is real!!! 😩😭
The plot is so dark, twisted and original, my heart rate was high all the time; the suspense, killing me with each page left, wondering what will happen next; the world building is amazing and the characters, awesome, already loving and hating some of them; and that cliffhanger, just... 😳🤯
The Claimed, a horrifying program that brings out the worst in these girls, competing to win the least of two evils 😞
But, even in the darkest place, true friendship shines bright, and that light will give you strenght 🥰... even when a fated mate bond can't be fulfilled and is killing you slowly 💔😭
Nina and Kimberly, you brilliant ladies, can't stress enough how much we need the next book stat, this start of your new series is a MUST read!!! 😍 ❤️

I have no shame in saying I enjoyed this book way to
much. It was very selection series-esque but with a werewolf twist! I have said it once and I’ll say it again, I don’t even usually like fantasy but Nina Walker pleasantly surprises me every time. I have to read anything and everything she touches. Literally read this in a night and I am DYING for the next book!

Holy Paranormal/ Dystopian/ Romance! This is a great book, I really enjoyed setting, the background, the characters. I cringed many times , this book gets into the grit. It does end on a cliffhanger (but they are all written) & I already ordered the next book.

⭐⭐⭐ (6.96)

*sigh*

Spoilers:
Now, in fairness, I skipped great swaths of this book because I couldn’t get past the concept of this 18yo being in such dire circumstances. You have to truly be in the mood to read this kind of thing. At no fault of the author, Amazon recc’d this book to me under paranormal romance, so I went in with different expectations. This book is not only not romance, but it also ends on a cliffhanger, so…idk. Still, I gave it a try once I oriented myself around this being maybe young adult? New adult? Either way, I feel bad for Poppy, because this story was relentless. Like, this book does not let up. There is always something horrific waiting on the horizon to happen to Poppy. This read as the handmaiden’s tale, but with werewolves. There was no on page rape(maybe, I did skip a lot) but there was always this sort of hanging threat of it which felt just as gross to me. Especially since the protag is so young. The reader is supposed to imagine a world in which war has destroyed mostly everything, except the patriarch. Monstrous Lycan roam the wilds, and humans can only be saved by equally monstrous werewolves, but only if they give up their first born females when they reach maturity. For what you ask, you guessed it, to be breeding slaves for the rest of their lives. But if they’re lucky one of four grown ass men could pick them to be their mate. Yes, they’ll still have to breed for this werewolf, but he’ll be the only one. The rest unfortunately get sent to a whore house where they’ll churn out children for countless werewolves until they die I guess. But…as a treat, to break up the tension, the authors throw in a handsome prince that Poppy may get to fall in love with. Not that it helps her circumstances at all. She’s still being trained as a courtesan and she could still be sent to a whore house, so…

Idk. It’s written well, I was just really disgusted by the story and premise. I don’t read a lot of YA so idk if this is normal for the genre, but it was not my cup of tea.

I really loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. It was so detailed and well thought out. I loved the world building and suspense of what will happen next with Poppy. I love how she will fight for herself while still trying to stay in line. The world gives off Hunger Games vibes with how there is different villages and I really loved it. There was an explanation when a new part of this world was introduced and it left me wanting more. The story feeds you fear, suspense, worry and lust. It takes a classic shifter pack story and puts a modern day twist to it. I am very excited to read what happens next in the next book with Ryne and Poppy.

3.5* What a nice surprise this book was! I...definitely did not expect to binge it in one day, but I could not put it down.

BRIEF SUMMARY

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world, in which there are supernatural creatures (werewolves, lycans and there are hints of other shifters existing, however, we don't get to see them in this book) and humans. The humans need protection from the lycans, who are werewolves without any thoughts and rationality, but can infect people with their virus, turning them mindless and savage. The werewolves provide said protection at a price. The price is they request the oldest girl from each family to come serve them once she is of age, thus separating her from her family and her known world. The humans are, in general, not really familiar with what this ''service'' is and so they send their daughters because the alternative is to be vulnerable to the lycans' attacks. It turns out, in a very "The Handmaid's Tale" style, the service required is actually procreation because the werewolves don't have enough women.

Our main heroine, Poppy, is not the eldest daughter and so she wasn't supposed to be sent to the werewolves. However, her sister is brutally killed in the first couple of pages (so this is not a spoiler) and so off Poppy goes in her stead. Once she arrives in the city where the werewolves live, she realises she has to compete with the other girls that were just ''collected'' in order to get a beta wolf to choose her for his bride. If at the end of one year, no one chooses her, she'll be sent to the mating houses, which are essentially brothels where human women are sent to be impregnated by any random werewolf who wishes to sleep with her.

Poppy is sent to a finishing school type of institution where she has to learn more about the world of the werewolves and learn how to be a proper lady, so she can be ''fit'' to be a beta's wife. The rest of the novel follows her experiences at this place, her meeting the alpha, the betas, trying to deal with her grief, expanding her horizons by honing new skills like reading and fighting.

A lot more happens, of course, but I'm trying to keep this spoiler-free, so let's jump to some of the elements of this story I enjoyed.

MY THOUGHTS:

* Fast-paced and impossible to put down;
* The plot was very entertaining, I mean, the book was described as The Bachelor meets The Handmaid's Tale, so the inspirations were clear from the beginning;
* The world is really interesting and I can't wait for the next book, where hopefully we'll get to see it expanded.
* Forbidden romance, which I enjoyed, even though it was a bit rushed and we never understood why exactly is it forbidden. This is something I'm absolutely certain will be addressed in the future books.
* Fated mates: this is a trope I hate, but I'm mentioning it because I know a lot of people adore it.
* Poppy was a typical goody character, she was incredibly patient and kind to some of the other girls, who were, frankly, abusing her. Which lead to her making mistake after mistake, because she was constantly goaded into doing stupid things and she wasn't thinking for herself. This is what somewhat reduced my enjoyment while reading, but I guess part of her character growth will be to learn how to stand up for herself, so this is not necessarily a bad thing. She just has a great ongoing character arc in front of her, which is always a good thing to look forward to as a reader.

Cannot wait for August when book 2 is coming out!

Unsure

I was intrigued by the idea behind this story, but I'm not sure if I really liked it.

There were parts I enjoyed. Like the competition idea (even as ruthless as it was). I also liked the genuine friendship between Poppy and Joanna.

I am a bit disappointed by the authors lack of follow through on their promises. WHY is everything so VAGUE!!! Give me some details, STOP TELLING ME and SHOW ME for goodness sake!!
-During the weeks in this book the girls have classes. We are never actually seeing these classes. We had a brief glimpse of art.. paint something telling us who you are. Another at "combat", all the betas attack Poppy to make her fight back, then nothing. Exercise was shown, where they run and then Vivian punishes Poppy with extra exercise.
-Poppy said the city was big and beautiful. Where is the descriptions?
-Gowns are always described in color only, maybe some detail about a v neck, or collar. Where are the details?! Are they made of silk? Overlaid with lace? Is there beadwork? Embroidered flowers? We don't know a thing except, it's long and black/blue/whatever.
-where is this "pack life"? Instead of shifters I have literally been imagining these people as vikings. Come, kill, conquer, mate, repeat.

What is the point of having Willow mentioned every other page if no one really CARES? Poppy only ever mentions her when she sees Anders, but she was the "other half of your soul". Not believable. I wanted to be mad at all the other people in this book for giving her such little consideration for her loss but it's kind of hard when the twin doesn't even seem that heartbroken.

I am not a fan of how the blatant r@pe is being whitewashed by everyone as just a part of life.

I am 98% NOT a fan of Ryne. He is a scared little boy playing a man's game. He doesn't even have the gumption to stand against things he KNOWS are wrong. Then he makes this HUGE deal to Poppy that he never forces women he beds, but admits to visiting the mating houses. In what reality do you use a sex slave but are not r@ping them? Can they say no? No, they can't! Just because you don't physically force them doesn't mean it's consent. (I'm actually a fan of reading non-con but be HONEST about what's really going on here!) Also he kissed (actually more like made out with) at least TWO different women, but has the nerve to get butt hurt that Poppy doesn't just fall at his feet when he openly speaks about her becoming a Beta wife. I wouldn't have begged here either!

I think I'll read book 2 because it does have me curious..but I REALLY hope the writing gets better going forward.

I am currently infatuated with dark romances. Most of the ones I find are contemporary, and I prefer paranormal. There should be a list with this and Quinn Blackbird’s series. Why?

Kimberly Loth and her cowriter, Nana Malone, have hit the sweet spot of dark, world domination first-person paranormal romance. The world is a what-if scenario: What if Shifters actually existed and took over the world? We like to think humans would exterminate them with nuclear weapons and other weaponry, but in this case, humans lost. Their legacy left humans working in a less-industrialized world, and shifters stuck unable to produce female offspring from the biochemical warfare. To pay for protection from the bitten, insane shifters, the first-born of every family were sacrificed. I immediately started getting suspicious that human birthrates could keep up with demand, but ignore this. The world creation is amazing.

In this atmosphere, I don’t think a strong female leader could survive. The shifters demanded obedience or death, and sacrifices were supposed to be trained enough to expect this. Poppy, however, was a replacement. She was more docile than her sister, which allowed her to survive. I got the impression Poppy was the draft horse of the story: strong, quiet, and filled with endurance. She was the underdog all the way, and I love an underdog who ultimately wins.

There was a strange love triangle (second trope winner!) with Poppy pursued by both an alpha and a beta who killed her sister. At first the Beta, Anders, seemed villainous, but I later realized he was constrained by his own societal restrictions, just like the Alpha. He actually attempted to find activities they had in common, and I melted a little towards him. I kept thinking both their chances were nil. Poppy refused to compromise her morals and cheat like Faye. Twenty women were competing (ooh, princess competition, another trope I love!) for 5 betas at first, and Poppy kept failing at the artistic competitions. Poppy also had this idea that she had any choice in the matter, and her options looked more and more like babymaker in a brothel (shudder!).

Yes, it reminded me of another famous story, The Handmaid’s Tale, which my husband says is one of my personal nightmares. Expect to shiver. Expect to spend at least a weekend mired in angst. If you like Quinn Blackbird’s dark Fae series, I expect you will love this, too.

Wow, just wow! Shades of The Handmaid's Tale and The Selection with a lot of wolf shifters thrown in....what's not to like?

Poppy and Willow are twins, but Willow is the eldest by 14 minutes. Therefore, she is one of the Claimed. That is, claimed by the wolves that protect their village from the Lycans, who are cruel monsters. When Willow stands up for herself, suddenly Poppy is thrust into her place.

"Submission, subservience, and obedience. Those are the three rules for the claimed." Poppy and the other girls are led into a competition to become a wife for one of the beta wolves. If they fall to the bottom of the competition, they are forced into a mating house. But, Poppy can't imagine that her life has come to this. "Being strong means standing up for yourself."

As time passes, Poppy learns more about the fates awaiting her and the other girls. She and Joanna, a strong, outspoken girl from another village, become great friends and Poppy begins to believe that there might be hope.

Ryne is the alpha wolf in this pack and Poppy finds herself being strangely attracted to him. But, since he is the alpha, does she stand a chance? Or, is she doomed to become the wife of the worst of the betas?

This book was well-written, with great character development and world building. It did deal with a horrific fate for the young women of the claimed, but I found myself being drawn into the story despite this. The authors have done a great job and I can't wait to continue the series to see what happens next!

The blurb sounds great, but the book sadly disappoints

Worldbuilding:
Wars between humans and the supernatural have wreaked havoc in the world. The shifters now reign supreme and humans have to pay them for protection against the feral lycans.
The buildup of the story and the information we got along the way was good. There was no information dump, we learned along with the main character Poppy.
Scenes and environments were clear and well described.

Character development:
For some reason, the characters just didn't do it for me, they felt flat. There was no spark, no oomph in what they did nor how they interacted with each other.
Poppy knew what was in store for her if she didn't succeed, however, it just felt like she didn't care to even try. Rhyn, I could at least understand up to a certain degree, but Poppy, nope, I just couldn't get into her story.

Pacing and flow:
I read the book in one go, though I nearly gave up a few times. But yeah, I sat there, hoping against hope for that one moment where the story would get rolling, where finally things would start to happen.
I ended the book sad and disappointed.

The book:
The book was well written with no (noticeable) errors.
The book was 310 pages long, spread over 30 chapters and told from Poppy's point of view.

Final thoughts:
I hate to say it, but I was pretty disappointed by the book :( It just never got going, or I just couldn't get into it, take your pick. I read the words but it just missed the oomph :(
Will I read the rest of the series? No, I don't think I will :(

Ugh. This is a cliffhanger which I'm not a fan of but the sequel to it is already out if that makes a difference. I don't plan on reading it so I don't know if it's 3 books or 2. Anyway this is definitely a YA book in intent if not in substance. The main female character (Poppy) is barely 18 and the hero Ryne probably barely older. In fact there are NO older characters in the book of importance (there are some older women teacher/mentors without any power or story significance) except for the Alpha King shifter who comes across as the villain. The world building was intricate and a bit cringe worthy. There is no actual rape in this book but but both rape and sexual slavery is implied, threatened, talked about and hangs over every female characters head throughout the whole book. And while the set up is not very YA there are plenty of tropes to go around, including the "mean girl" threat, the young woman who must save the frikin day, a hero who falls desperately for the heroine for absolutely no reason and a boo, hiss villain. I thought our hero was a bit tepid to be honest. 'I'll make sure you get sent to one of the good brothels to serve your time, Poppy'. Paraphrasing but the gist is our hero is looking a bit weak here. Poppy was....struggling with circumstances beyond her control and I didn't buy into her falling for Ryne at all. Just overall a tad distasteful to read about to be honest.

This was without doubt, one of the best shifter books I've read so far!!🤩 I devoured it in one sitting❣ I'm not sure whether to be happy that it broke my reading slump or depressed that it gave me a major book hangover🙈

Poppy, a normal human girl (yes, you read it right, neither blindingly beautiful nor extremely smart or with sudden magical powers) gets thrown into what seems like The Selection for wolf shifters. Unfortunately, this selection has more unhappy endings than happy ones. The girls are repeatedly told to trust the process, but the process and the alpha king (aka the guy in charge) are terrible! Ryne has potential to become a book boyfriend, let's see what happens☺ His father is a major a**hole who is definitely going to create more havoc in the next book.

Loved the friendship that Poppy and Joanna shared❤ Joanna is more of your typical YA protagonist and that's why it's nice to see a girl like Poppy creating a new dynamic for YA leads everywhere.
I really hope we get more romance between the two main couples!! 😏

TW- There is a lot of gory deaths and several mentions of rape, bullying, episodes of depression and glorified sexual abuse.

That ending was definently a shocker and I cannot wait to see what the next book holds in store for everyone!!

Night of the wolf moon is book 1 of the New world shifters series by Kimberly Loth & Nina Walker.

It’s a Dystopian wolf shifter PNR with
Fated mates, slight OW drama (the H kisses someone in front of h) mentions of violence with dark underlying themes.

Poppy & Willow are twin sisters, willow was supposed to be a claimed - taken as payment to the wolf shifters to allow her village to remain protected from the Lycans - but when Willows fiesty attitude gets her killed before the exchange can take place Poppy must take her place instead.
Poppy is horrified to discover the claimed are to be chosen as mates for the Beta’s, and due to a shortage of female shifters, those not chosen will be sent to the mating houses to provide children for the rest of the pack.
Poppy is drawn to the Alpha Ryne but they can never be together, the King Alpha, Ryne’s father, will be the one to choose his sons mate and as he will never choose Poppy she must decide if she should give it her all in the hopes of bagging herself a beta or resign herself with being a walking womb for the pack.

I always know a book is good by how desperate I am for book 2 and I am absolutely fuming I need to wait for book 2, I devoured this book in a couple of hours because I just couldn’t put it down.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a review.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I knew in the first chapter I was going to enjoy it but I wasn’t sure just how much and ended up loving it. I’m now itching to get my hands on book 2!

The main character, Poppy, is extremely likable. She’s made to look weak and ordinary but really she’s strong, kind, a fighter, brave, and the sort of person you want to be on your side. As for her new friend, Joanna, she’s a badass and just as likable but for different reasons. Together they make a pretty great duo and friends.

I also enjoyed the building of this world and it’s complexities. It’s made out to seem very black and white at the beginning but as you get into the story you learn more about what’s really going on and that there is a lot more grey then black and white. It even made me wonder if some of the people made out to be bad guys are really all that bad.

Thank you to Nina for this ARC, I really loved this book and definitely recommend it to people who enjoy dark paranormal love stories! I also saw a review that said this story gave off Handmaid Tale’s vibes and I totally agree with that so if you enjoy that story you might like this one as well!
